Microsoft Windows to Linux Mint
Microsoft Windows: There are alternatives to using Microsoft products. Linux Mint is a faster, less intrusive Operating System. Open Office or Libre Office are free alternatives to Office 365. This video shows how I switched Mint for Windows.

I did more or less the same a month ago on my 12 year old ASUS laptop (harddisk replaced by SSD). It takes some getting used to, of course, but I will never look back. Microsoft no longer supplies an operating system, they behave as if they owns my machine, not me. Bye Bye MS
Thanks for sharing. I'm encouraged to see more people exploring alternatives to Microsoft.
@@martyplecki7567 I forgot to tell that my laptop now uses less power and (thus) runs cooler And less fan noise.
Libre Office is also an alternative. It is a variation on Open Office but some people like it better. There are a few things that you may want to also get with the "software manager". The quickest way to get to the "software manager" is to click on the menu then type *install* in the search bar. From there, you can bring up the "software manager" to install things. I will now list things you may want Stelarium : The twinkly lights you see in the night sky are documented Octave : It is likely you won't but people who want MatLab without the high cost might Solitaire : We all need a silly game some times GIMP : Like photoshop. It has a learning curve but can be useful with only a little learning Gnumeric : This is a very different spreadsheet program. It is fast and doing graphs can be easier. It also saves graphs as images Kicad : If you design circuit boards in your spare time Geany : An editor for plain ascii xxx.txt files that programmers sometimes use. Audacity : Edits sound files. You can import one format and export another. "normalize" under "effects" is very nice Avidemux : Simple edits on videos. This is nice for doing minor changes kdenlive : Complicated powerful editing of videos. This is for making that movie wine: This is an interface that lets you run all well written Windows programs .. or should I say both well written Windows programs Also I suggest you find a picture that you like for your desktop background and set that. I use a pleasant picture of a calm lake
Ken, Thanks for the comment and suggestions. I used Kicad for a Li Ion nickel strip spot welder circuit. There is a video about that on this channel. Kicad was useful, but talk about a learning curve:-)
@@martyplecki7567 I found Kicad surprisingly easy. I won't name the thing I was using lest I be sued. I am working on getting circuit simulations to work on Kicad but not spending much time on it. If you do electronics or other science stuff you may find Octave worth looking at. To fully use it but it can be handy when a spreadsheet can't be wrested into doing what you need. It does numbers stuff really well. It sucks at strings. It is a bit like BASIC with the ability to do matrix and array stuff X = 1 : 10 Y = sqrt(X) plot(X,Y) title("A plot for no good reason")
After using windows for over 20 years I switched to MacOS and Linux. Never looked back.
Thanks for sharing your experience! It's great to see more people exploring alternative operating systems.
Linux mint and zorin os are awesome
There are alternatives to Microsoft. Thanks for the comment:-)
I have been running Linux Mint on my home computers for almost 10 years. It runs much faster than Windoze and I don´t have to worry about viruses. Today I installed Linux Mint on a refurbished ThinkPad T480 which had Windoze 10 on it. Getting to the BIOS to boot from a USB, was the most difficult thing. Windows was set up in secure mode and it would not recognize the F1 key to enter BIOS. I ended up accessing the BIOS through the Windows interface. I had to disable the Secure boot, then I was able to use the F12 key to change the boot device order. The laptop then booted from the Linux USB into the live version. I checked out the sound and wifi; everything seemed to work ok. I then did a full linux install to the hard drive and everything worked fine.
Thanks for sharing your work around:-)
BTW: It is possible to install Linux Mint onto a USB hard drive. This can be nice in a few cases. Some older low cost laptops lack hard drive space. booting from an external drive or perhaps an SD card can be a good way to go. I have a laptop that came with Win10 that mostly gets booted from an external 1TB drive.
Smooth move.
Thanks. My guess is you made the move a while back:-)
Microsoft m'avait planté mon pc deux jours avant Noël : ecran bleu. Je ne voulais pas payer de nouveaux pilotes. J'ai alors installé Ubuntu. Sublime.
Merci pour le partage. Moins de Microsoft, c'est mieux :-)
Nice! Hope you enjoy linux mint!
Thanks for the comment. I am enjoying being Microsoft free:-)
Great video! Do you have a link to the tutorial? Is this the Asus T100? Wondering if you installed 64 bit without any issues, because that system is notoriously finicky (32 bit UEFI bios and 64 bit architecture, I believe)
Thanks for the comment. The vids I watched are on the playlist for this video. You should be able to see them by clicking. Let me know if you have trouble. I am out of town now and cannot get to the ASUS, but I remember checking and it is a 64 bit unit. I installed the 64 bit version without issues.

I bought Libre back in 05 after I deleted the FREE then Microsoft office off my pc. I paid 65 bucks for their program only to find that it would not run without microsoft office being installed on my PC. Garbage.
Thanks for the Comment. Too bad about your experience. I don't know about Libre in 2005. Now it is free and it comes loaded with Linux Mint. I started using Open Office about 3 years ago on windows with no problem. It is free too and I may switch from Libre to Open office, although they seem very similar. It may be worth another try for you:-)
Open office is effectively frozen. It's also a mess. We now have Libreoffice, OnlyOffice and WPS Office as alternatives. Libreoffice is the most powerful and has an Access style database - great for teaching.
Look at switching to Linux this way; Windows 11 is so different to Windows 10 that it's like learning a new Operating System, so you may as well install Linux and learn that instead, and Linux doesn't spy on you !
For me, your advice is sound:-)
If you're looking for stability and control, you might want to give FreeBSD a try. It has been my best choice for a daily production environment, and I hope it will become your reliable and trusted companion in the future. Happy Christmas.
Many computers may have been saved by installing a real operating system. I evicted "windows" back in January of 2009.

i'm still using ms office 2003, it's the last version that used the typical layout like all the previous versions. i got lucky and scored a retail copy that was made for the chinese market, the trick thing about that is it doesn't have any of the load restrictions and requirements that MS included on the version made for the US markets. other then some chinese writing on the cd case, it's the same office 2003 as we had here with the exception of, there is no limit to the number of machines it can be loaded on at the same time and it runs on any version of windows even win 10, the only hassle is you have to install a patch to access the newer doc x documents, if i didn't have this office id be using libra too, there no way i would ever pay ms a bunch more money for a new office program just to do the same stuff i already do in the older version of office, that's stupid.....
Thanks for the Comment. I have a legal copy of MS Office , but I am happy to have found both Open Office and Libre Office. They are pretty close to MS and I don't have to be reminded of MS when using the other options:-)
I salute you Sir. It does my heart good that you took the plunge. Happy Computing.
Thanks for the Comment. It is encouraging to see the number of folks getting away from Microsoft:-)
Open Office has had little development since 2011. In 2010 Sun Corp said they were no longer offering a commercial version of the suite and donated the project to the Apache Foundation. Many of the developers left and forked the project to create Libre Office ,which has been extensively developed since 2011. Libre Office is the suite that is natively installed in most Linux distros It amazes me that anyone still uses Open Office
I'm a Linux Mint and LibreOffice user, but I have to say that most people who use a word processor use only a fraction its functionality, so the 2011 version of Open Office is probably fine for them.
@@Kevin-mx1vi You should always use up to date software for security reasons
@PaulG.x Tell that to the people still using Open Office - all they are interested in is "Does it work ? Yes ? Then why change ?"
Thanks for the Comment and the info about which is being updated. I was thinking about switching back to Open, but will stay with Libre now:-)
LibreOffice works for me.
Apache OpenOffice is defunct. LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice, and it is basically a community-driven project, as opposed to a corporate-centric one like Microsoft Office.
Thanks for the Comment and the info about which is being updated. I was thinking about switching back to Open, but will stay with Libre now:-)
Good video!! Just a couple of tips. Use something like cardboard or make a tripod out of a clothes hanger. Use lamp shades, put them behind or the sides of where you are filming for better lighting. ..Also download OBS screen recorder or Simple screen recorder from the software center and use it for part of the video. ..Keep making videos.
Thanks for the Comment and the info. If you have an interest, check out some of my other vids. The lighting is much better on those:-)
BTW: I like the video as it is. It has that "a friend just talking to you" feel to it. Yes upgrade the gear if it makes you happy but my own videos are made with a phone and some other random stuff and nobody has complained. That may be because nobody watched them.
Thanks Marty. Looks like we have a lot in common. Retain the curiostiy young man!

I've worked in the IT field since the early 1980s and used multiple operating systems during that time. I can say that Microsoft Windows was the worst operating system I have ever encountered. You made a wise choice switching to Mint. Good for you!

Congratulations and enjoy "but I didn't want to have anything to do with Windows ever again" = new subscriber. Check 'x things to do after Linux (Mint) Installation'. Keep us informed.
Thanks for the comment....And I will check out your suggestion:-)
Welcome to Linux! Currently running Mint too. Also a small tip and for anyone else unaware reading this, not sure if the same applies to your computer since it is a laptop, but my PC with an ASUS motherboard allows me to press F8 at the ASUS logo after first turning the computer on to go straight in to the boot selection options (menu for selecting between whether to boot from hard drive, SSD, or a plugged in USB drive, etc) without having to fiddly change boot order in the BIOS. You might be able to do the same, or have an equivalent boot menu shortcut key even if you don't have an ASUS motherboard/laptop.
are you sure it's f8 and not f10 or f12, having worked in IT building 100's of new custom computers for many years it's been my experience that hardware manufacturer's deliberately avoid using f8 for anything because with windows f8 is what you use to boot a windows machine into safe mode........
Thanks for the Comment and tip:-)
Windows has too much BS built in. Linux and Unix have been around forever. Yet, applications may or may not work on Linux. But if you don't play games and do business work then Linux is far better.
Thanks for the Comment:-)
Take a look at Zorin 17.2 . I was a mint head but I think Zorin is really nice and well-maintained. Very cool GUI with lots of options and looks. Zorin 17.2 is on all my computers, Desktops, Laptops, Wife's Artsy PC. Happy Campers here!

Easy. Just install Linux Mint, Ubuntu or Debian. All these distros install Libre Office as a default. This office product will also read and save MS Office files. If you choose Linux Mint or Debian also select Cinnamon Desktop.

Joe, Good luck on the switch. I have no regrets. I did have two problems to solve after the switch. 1. How to get the OS to recognize my phone to get pic and vids from the phone to the computer drive. Solution: after connecting the phone, go back to the phone and click Allow. It is simple but if one does not know that, who would think to look at the phone for the solution? 2. Loading the most current update of software / packages / apps is not straight forward, and I have not found the solution yet.
@@martyplecki7567 Linux Mint has an automatic software updater that will indicate with an icon in the tray to the right when you have updates available. On my Mint system it looks like a little shield, much like the Windows Defender icon, but it has nothing to do with antivirus. If you click that icon it will present you the updater app and allow you to perform your system update. I enjoyed your video greatly, and I liked and subbed. I believe you deserve a lot of viewers because you present well. I introduced my dad to Mint, and we have an appointment in the upcoming weeks to get him converted over. He doesn't have a spare laptop to experiment on, and he's a little nervous about completely flipping his whole-hog at once. But free him from Windows, we shall!
Bravo !
I suggest you begin the transition soonish so that you can do it relaxed and in your own time. There is enough stress in the world so not waiting until Microsoft kills your computer can be better.
@@kensmith5694 Yes that is what I am doing. The ultimate goal: will this do everything I currently do on my 9 year old desktop computer under Win10... Did a clean install of Mint 22 Cinnamon on an 8 year old laptop. Installed two network Brother printers. Printed a document, an envelope, and an excel document just fine. Need the scan function of one printer just have not explored that yet. Also need basic photo and video editing just have not explored that either... If all that works out it will get installed on the desktop and I'll be good to go!
