@@Josep_Hernandez_Lujan Yeah, I'mma have to disagree on that point. TLJ was a different *kind* of terrible, but I'd put TFA slightly above TLJ. TLJ did a great deal to fix Rey (she's no longer stepping on everyone else's toes the way she did with Han), and it at least *tried* to give Finn something to do, but introducing the bad guys as comic relief from the get-go was *not* the right move, and the handling of the fleet chase was extremely weak.
It was still significantly better than the Frankenstein that was Rise of Skywalker. That movie basically got hammered by the flaws of both of its predecessors.

Paramount and CBS didn't exactly do themselves any favors with an already alienated audience when they also choose, about this same time, to sue Star Trek fan films. Fan films which a segment of the community felt was far more "Star Trek" than current Star Trek. It doesn't really matter which side of the fence you are on when it comes to whether or not you feel they were justified in doing so. When you're banking on getting a big audience for a property with a known niche clientele maybe it's not such a great idea to anger a segment of that group, keeping them from coming to see said property in the theater.

@@chavesa5 That's not what Peters was being sued for. It's pretty common for fan films to make money - _Star Trek: Continues_ made money, sold merch, and paid people wages, just like _Axanar_ was doing. Peters was sued explicitly for copyright infringement just for _using_ the IP, whether or not he was making money off of it.
Now, disclaimer, I really don't care for Peters or the _Axanar_ project. The fact it's raised MILLIONS and the project STILL isn't finished after many *years* is just pathetic. Then there's the seemingly endless string of legal battles that Peters compulsively engages in, not to mention the massive amount of behind-the-scenes conflict between Peters and the fellow cast and crew.
I'm just pointing out that him making money isn't why CBS sued him, nor was it out of the ordinary for fan films to make money.

The saddest part is this film really did deserve better. Like many I thoroughly unwowed by the trailer and only saw it in the theater as part of a family outing. It has its niggles to be sure but I walked out very happy and wishing it had been this rather than Into Darkness that had been the follow up to the first reboot trek. The actors were all on point. The story was solid. It balanced humor and action well and managed to get a reaction out of me seeing the Enterprise get trashed for the umpteeth time. I even liked the new character it introduced and, as a good entry in a series should, left me wanted more. It did what a reboot should do: remind you of the good the original had while spicing things up for a new age and audience.
It hurts to know that the future is so uncertain just as it seemed they were hitting their groove and getting it right.

Well now this is a surprise, but you are in chaos mode after all.
Beyond is easily the best of the Kelvin trilogy. Sure it deserves some of its flack for still continuing some of the “flaws” of its two predecessors but at the same time Beyond did have a sense to being closer to good in that it gave us a good reason and pathos to care about the characters. Pine Kirk also started be more closer to a proper leader and captain rather than Captain Jerk Beerpong in Into Darkness.

Agreed. I didn't mind ST 2009, but I was heavily disappointed in the lack of improvement and lazy and uninteresting rehash that ST: ID used. It took me till 2020(!) before I dared to check out Beyond. I cannot express how refreshing it was to see Kirk as an actual leader, and I adored how Sulu was showing characteristics as the Next Great Captain, just like how Takei's Sulu was one of the most charismatic Star Trek captains of the '90s. I don't watch Star Trek for the rush of special effects, but as long as it isn't used to cover up poor plot, I don't mind it either.
Beyond proved to me that the reboot cast was fine, but it also makes me sad that all the elements that clicked in this movie, could just as easy improved the earlier Star Trek reboot movies, just by showing them earlier in the trilogy. I can accept blockbuster Star Trek, but at-least show us the elements that made low-budget movies like ST2 and ST6 the unforgettable movies they where.

I think the core problem of Paramount's handling of the Kelvin movies was taking both the casual and Trek audiences for granted.
The delayed time for both sequels pissed away a lot of the momentum the first film brought, and Beyond was always going to struggle to stand out in a film landscape increasingly dominated by the MCU and other shared universe attempts. Moviegoers who enjoyed the flash bang zoom and funny dialogue emphasis of Abrams Trek had far more options now than they did in 09 and the positive associations people had with the first two films largely faded by the time Beyond came out. The delays meant it had to rely on hardcore fans to buoy it up, which leads into the other miscalculation
If Paramount assumed Trek fans could sustain the film, the one two punch of Into Darkness' questionable story choices and awful marketing of Beyond effectively killed any a great deal of the possible fan excitement there could have been for it. With the studio focusing on just getting the film done and out on time, they did virtually nothing to assuage the increasing skepticism and criticism long time fans had about the franchise. The infamous Beastie Boys teaser even seemed to scream that Paramount couldn't even be bothered to try and appeal to core fans in something basic like marketing.
Thus Beyond under performed, coming too late for moviegoers once excited for JJTrek, and having too little appeal for fans unconvinced it would be any different from films they were lukewarm about to begin with.

I would say the problem with Into Darkness was more waiting 4 years to release it after the first film. The iron went cold and the general audiences they had picked up in 2009, forgot about it and went elsewhere. If they had released it during 2011, I think it would have enjoyed far larger success. (At least in terms of box office.)

Star Trek Beyond is not only the best of the reboot Star Trek films, it might even be my favorite Star Trek film.
Yes, Wrath of Khan, Undiscovered Country and First Contact are all great, but a large part of what makes them great ties into the rest of the series and our investment in the characters built up over the years (which is why it's such a crime that the DS9, Voyager and Enterprise crews never got their own feature films) while Beyond stands on a smaller stage and so has a bigger impression.

I actually really like Into Darkness, because it gave us the Vengeance Class and it shows that Praxis is already broken ( _which I think was because of Nero_ ) which again furthers the differences between Kelvin Timeline and regular like, what more strange things will we see here? But Beyond is the movie where the actors are so very much clearly the most comfortable in their roles. I also really really liked the USS Franklin and it's similarities ( _there used to be an image that compared a shot of USS Franklin and Spock holding a phaser to the Enterprise NX Class and Mr. Reed holding a phase pistol_ ) to the NX Class.
And even though Elba is a great actor, I found the motivations of the villain in Beyond... very very flawed and very stupid. The way I see it, he blames the Federation for his own inability to cope and change. I would had at least accepted him changing in the end and doing a redeeming heroic sacrifice but no, not even that we got. Instead he doubles down with an animalistic scream and then looses. So hearing you say this that I had no idea about.... Doesn't unfortunately change my view on the villain at all. He's still very weak in my eyes. At least Khan had a motivation, as did Nero. Both which were explored more in comics..
Is there any comic about pre-Beyond adventures of the Franklin? Anyone know? It'd be interesting to read that if there are!

Kahn could have been more patient in Space seed, began inserting himself into this new society and building a new empire the proper way. And no, the federation would not imprison him or his people. Not for crimes they were convicted of by a long defunct set of governments.
In WoK he had a powerful starship and the open galaxy at his disposal, with the potential for an even greater revenge on Kirk if he had any vision at all.

I liked 09 and half of ID, but with this one they seemed to finally move into a direction where the Kelvin universe could stand on its own. The characters stopped being exaggerated caricatures and felt like the original crew again. Unfortunately, despite all the talk of challenging the core values of the Federation and adding depth to the villain, Krall felt disappointingly one dimensional, spewing empty phrases rather than actually challenging the notions of the Federation. Coupled with some of the over the top action scenes that didn't feel right for Trek and ultimately it fell somewhat short of it's promise. Still a very enjoyable movie, but it could've been even better.

@AdalRoderick The 2009 film had a similar effect on me; when _Into Darkness_ came out I waited for cable, and was glad I did. I gave _Beyond_ a chance only after friends persuaded me that JJ Failbrams had not been involved in either the writing or the direction of the third film.
I was pleasantly surprised. _Beyond_ is certainly no _Undiscovered Country,_ never mind _Wrath of Khan;_ but I'd say it's about on par with _First Contact,_ _Search for Spock,_ or _Voyage Home._ It's a pity it had to follow the abominable _Into Darkness,_ which probably hurt its box office take at least as much as Paramount's anemic marketing campaign and counter-productive attacks on the fan base.

AdalRoderick Beyond was best of the reboot. I never really liked the reboot to begin with, but Beyond was a positive suprise. Not a good movie, but when compared to 09 Trek and Into Darkness, it was lightyears ahead of those two.

I think the advertising wasn't helped by showing them destroying the Enterprise. I still strenuously object with that decision in terms of the plot, but to show in the very first trailers that they're ripping the cool ship apart made me have a very strong reaction to the movie.
I saw it anyways and enjoyed it in spite of that decision. It was sort of Star Trek meets Farscape. In a good way. I'd love to see a Farscape revival with Simon Pegg involved.

3:23 quick correction, though Montalbon lived in Mexico and spent a large portion of his formative years there he was not latino. Latino refers specifically to people of latin american origin. He was ethnically Spanish, and while the skin tone of Spanish people varies greatly from very white to very dark they are still caucasian/white.
Montalbon in his TOS take of Kahn at least did in fact have to wear makeup to appear as dark as they wanted, if they did this in TWoK it was noticeably better done. but looked more like a natural tan.
Either way Montalbon and Cumberbatch were in fact the same race, but in the modern era it is rather more risky to paint your white guy up to appear indian!

Star Trek Beyond was perhaps the least terrible of the three Kelvin timeline movies, but it still had a monumentally stupid plot that felt entirely constructed around a series of action pieces. The story barely makes any sense and you get the feeling that they spent the entire movie working their way towards that 'Enterprise destroying a massive drone fleet by playing Beasty Boys really loud'. That was a funny scene, but it was really the only pay off of the entire movie.

I just saw your Into Darkness review after this one, and I had to comment about this review, and I'm doing it there :
I'm disappoint about this review. It almost was a Doug Walker level of bad faith and non-analyses, bashing for bashing and joking.
Kirk is not proving right in this movie, on the contrary, his actions put the crew in danger and almost killed himself because of all his mistakes.
The only character that approove the stupid side of kirk is... the main Bad Guy, Marcus. He needed the savagery of stupid Kirk for his war, and Kirk learn to be more responsible and wise to not end up like Marcus. Proving that Kirk is not on the right path by acting like that.
He learn to be more carefull thanks to Scotty advices.
He learn to be more civilized thanks to Spock advices.
He learn to be more calm and less violent thanks to Uhura advices.
He learn to be a better guy by seeing how closed he is to Marcus and Khan, and how he should not act.
At no point, Kirk is proving right, Scotty is proving right, Uhura is proving right, Spock is proving right, Kirk even admitt it and says he's a better captain than him. But Kirk, the only good things he's done, is listening the advices of others and sacrifice himself to clean up his mess and saving the crew who's in this situation because of him.
The all movie put him in a situation were being reckless and violent don't get him anywhere good, even powerless to certains situation, so he can learn to be better. Beating Kahn dosen't do anything, being a smartass didn't do anything, take the risk just put him and his crew in risk. He's punish for being like that. Because action scene dosen't stop a story, they still tells stories in this situations.
This movie show kirk grow up and be more close to the original kirk, it's the logical evolution to the reckless no brain hero of the first one to the more competent and intelectuel Kirk of "Beyond".
Maybe you criticized the continuity problem with the Kirk of the original, but the fact that he didn't grown up the same way change the need of this critic. He didn't have a model of Starfleet to teach him to be the wise hero he was in the original series, but some bad dads and a sad mother that made him the Supid, violent and reckless kirk.
Plus, the mockery of great scene like the suicide bomber sequence, a scene so great it could be a great short movie in himself.
Even Cumberbatch, not mentionning his great acting make your review more unfair, for more joke about the white washing stuff... But no mention of the fact the character was supposed to be Benicio Del Toro, but he was not available, so they replaced him... REALLY unfair.
I understand the hate against Orci and his stupid commentary, but bashing the movie this way dosen't help your point against the guy.
I'm not pretending the movie is perfect, I understand why some don't like the J.J. Star Trek Movies, the underwear scene was gratuous, the ending was rushed, Bones is underused, but even if the movie had flaws, that dosen't make it right to bash him with primary rage like that. Especially seeing that you are a great reviewer, you did great, intresting and just review of movies before and after this one, so it's really pitifull, you can do better than that, your review of Beyond proove it, real research of the making of the movie, fair criticism, good analysis, but for into darkness, you seems blind by rage.

I don't remeber there being a Star Trek preview before JJ Wars, but my assessment of JJ Trek at the time was already of it being effectively braindead in a persistent vegetative state _(a condition frequently observed around Alex Kurtzman)_ So, you might have a selective memory situation because why devote your attention to a franchise that's practically already dead.

What Star Trek needs to be is not an SJW, political, or identity pandering piece. No thanks to Discovery and Picard. Every established character does not need their sexual orientation flipped. We can throw away the continuity of the reboot films, as well as Discovery and Picard. Kelvin timeline merging with the Alpha timeline? We can call that the Mulligan timeline.
It needs to go back to the ideology of what made TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise what they were.
