- The Montclair Ambulance Unit is a vital part of the community of Montclair Township. They are in the suburbs of New York City but located in Essex County, New Jersey. With a population of approximately 40,000 residents, they are the 60th most popular township in New Jersey. Montclair Ambulance Unit has faithfully served the area since 1953 as a nonprofit asset. They moved into a retired firehouse in 2004/2005. The main reason for choosing this location was the building's design and deep history. The board felt a strong need to stay connected to the community it serves, so by choosing a firehouse built in 1906, they could meet that goal. The firehouse sits right in the middle of residential and commerce. The Montclair Ambulance Unit operates in a two-tiered system which means they are the BLS transport while their ALS partners are based out of the local hospitals.
Chief James Mazza and Deputy Chief Michael Craig walk us around the station providing us with their history, mission, and vision for the service. It was awesome to see the creativity and commitment of the administration to serve not only Montclair township but also participate in the New Jersey EMS Task Force. As a staff member being part of a Task Force you could make responses all over the state and beyond. This means you are working for a department that sees the big picture of the healthcare system. Montclair Ambulance Unit is a desirable place to work.
Not all EMS units are attached to fire departments, many throughout the United States are independent. Montclair Ambulance Unit is a shining example of how an EMS service should operate. They focus on diversifying their skills to meet the needs of the community and its surroundings. If you are interested in joining the department please check out their website at MontclairEMS.org. They can always use your help and donations.
Thank you so much for watching this episode with Montclair Ambulance Unit, we were very excited to learn about the service and the area. I absolutely love that Map wall , what a total genius concept and creation , and when the Assistant Chief said about people taking time to look up an address on the computer and he then just flips the switch on the Map wall , I actually laughed out loud , I simply LOVE It ! Sure it may be a bit out of date , but they are genius for keeping it in service that's all .(edit) PS : I am a map nerd though , so I may be a bit biased .
Those lighted maps were state of the art back in the day. We had one in Broomall when I started in the 80s.
THAT POSTING ON THE DOOR , MAKE AN EFFORT NOT EXCUSES ! THEN THE MAP LIGHTING ! THAT IS JUST AMAZING ! ANOTHER FIRST FOR ME ! THANK YOU BROTHER MIKE ! 🇺🇲
Thanks Heros Next Door for this EMS unit video. Hope to see more in the future. Stay safe
I love the family feel of a small ambulance station. We, for the most part, still have our small stations in rural Wales. Large towns, like much of the rest of the UK, now use ‘Make Ready’ centres.
We are all ALS though.
Nice looking Building.
At one time Montclair EMS or as it was called back in the 80's was the Montclair Ambulance Unit 99% volunteer was based out of a building on Valley Road, boy do things change
I remember when the old EMS station was on valley road and I remember when the firehouse was there
Good Crew at Montclair. Chief Mazza is a Good Guy.
It was awesome getting to know everyone
Old school BLS, nice station, looks to be a great organization, I love it!!
Thanks for watching
I love your videos! I’m hoping you get to Boonton NI soon 🤞
Thanks for watching. We appreciate you
I found it incredibly interesting there are city gas pumps that pay fuel for EMS. I've not heard of that before. Beautiful station, loved the assistant chief.
This is actually pretty common
montclair is a great company!
We definitely think so
Hey Will you PLEASE come down to thomaston ga and see the brand new built station! Also great video
Please send us an invite so we can get you on the schedule
My grandfather was a Lt. there back in the day. Retired from that house.
Make sure to thank him for service. We appreciate each and everyone of them.
I prefer to sleep on the couch when I'm on duty, if I take the bed then might as well not wake me up.. LOL
You guys should do a station cribs at good fellowship in west Chester PA! They have a pretty cool station!
We’ve tried to schedule Goodfellowship three different times and they keep canceling if you can get us in and have them keep the schedule will be more than happy to do it
My guess is that big door at the entrance is where they brought the horses in when not in use it looks tall enough for a horse and in 1906 that would be my guess
Mike I’m curious if you could do videos of why we do certain skills in EMS. For example how to handle simpler calls to more complex calls. Excellent job on these videos.
Yeah maybe our next around the fire table live. That’s a great topic
@@HeroesNextDoor what do you mean fire table live I’ve never seen that.
@@Tundralifted once a month or so I do a live video where people like yourself can view comment and discuss topics. It’s called around the fire table.
if u have time u can do Elmwood Park Fire Department #1 fire house
That is great! Using older firehouses as EMS stations should be done a lot more. When I was an EMT, we had to park on a street corner for our shift. Just a suggestion- you should profile Bed-Stuy Volunteer Ambulance in Brooklyn New York. They have a great program !
I definitely like using older fire houses, however, personally, I would like to see it a little bit more updated and renovated, but make sure not to lose the history in the look of the original firehouse
I don’t understand why they have two different ambulance services. Why not just ALS ?
BLS is very limited on what they can do
Like seeing EMS specific station tours
Thank you some others are haters 😜
FYI Montclair is located in Essex County not Sussex County. so you may want to edit the description
Thank you we will get right on that. Sorry for the mistake
@@HeroesNextDoor it’s all good
How would I go about asking you to come do a station tour of our station?
Send us an email to watchheroesnextdoor@gmail.com. Include contacts names and numbers location, any special apparatus and a brief description of the station. We will start on a schedule to get r done
Can you do some more Indiana ems or fire soon
Yes one day. We have all 50states to see too 😉
Nice video. Great station. What was the history of the fire service there?.
Not sure but we could find out. Our purpose was to highlight the EMS in this episode
when will you be back in michigan.
Yes. We are working on a UP trip. Maybe next year.
28:30 teaching a 5yr old to intubate is good but I wonder if at that young age it would even stick in their head or scare them a little. Again not a bad thing to teach at a young age just curious as to how kids would handle that info
Good point. But all we did was the “Fred the head”. She ended up going to college and becoming an athletic trainer 😉. When she was 14 she did the junior EMT program too.
I really enjoy your videos. As well as the premises and vehicles that you view, you also come across some really dedicated and selfless people working for these various agencies.
Top tip: Please remove the stupid and unnecessary background music from your videos. Why would you use it when people are constantly talking?! It’s not as though there are silences to fill.
Thank you for watching. The music helps cover our mess up and edits. We are constantly trying to back it down but it can never completely go away. But we are working on how to fix the edits to not need it. We appreciate your input and thanks for watching
Can you make a video in northeast Indiana
Have we received your invite yet?
@@HeroesNextDoor not sure
I love you videos I am a big fan
Unfortunately EMS is the step child of public safety. We always get the shaft.
That needs to change
@@HeroesNextDoor it surely does.
I would disagree on that. 911 everyone forgets.
@@gabrielhoxie346 I’m not talking about
The general public. EMS is viewed by cops to taxi drunks and fire looks as if nothing. My brother works for a FD/EMS agency. Probie FF makes like 85k to start. EMT makes 60k while EMS runs 98% of the call volume.
Bunch of these in Pittsburgh\
Have them send us an invite so we can go see them
Are they not allowed to provide ALS care, due to the hospitals providing that care. Or does the company just chose to be BLS only?
Edit: sounds like it's a New Jersey thing! I should have watched the whole video before posting the comment 🤣
We understood that the entire state of NJ is hospital based ALS while BLS are independent
What’s the point? Why not just have ALS ?
@Nealmatteson sounds like the State of NJ only allows hospitals to provide ALS ambulance services. So, the state doesn't allow fire departments or private ambulance companies to be ALS. It's a state decision.
Not a huge fan of the hospital only ALS
Why not?
Actually I am not much either, my city it makes since as we only have one hospital and one EMS station and none of the FD stations run EMS one or two townships might run them but those are even hospital ambulances based at a township fire station. As for me not liking it, if it’s a big city I’d rather see it as a fire department ran or contracted AMR and MMR or so on as they are more likely to transfer you to a closer hospital or a hospital of your choice if able and not the hospital it’s assigned to.
No one want to watch a 36 min video about an ambulance house thanks
You are incorrect. Many of this channel's subscribers, myself included, love the longer videos, which means more content and more of the station. Sorry if longer videos aren't your thing, I recommend skipping every so often.
Why do you feel that way? We are all brother and sisters in public service
Disappointing as compared to Teanecks 100% volunteer organization that takes in anyone with an interest and gives them the training they need.
