    Great video, Mike. It can be miserable living in and working out of an old barn but nothing beats one for history. The artifacts can move to a new house from the old, but so much of that company's history is the building itself. Us crusty old jakes constantly wax nostalgic about how things used to be done, but it's much more meaningful when you can stand in that very room and point to that specific bit of history--the ticket window, or the bingo stage, or the coat rack and gas nightlight in the engine bay--while describing it. In a way, it personifies the old barn as not just the building that houses the company but almost a living, breathing member of it.
    More like this, and keep up the good work! Stay safe, brother.

    I wish I could get more people in my community to be involved in the fire department, we only have about 6 members that run calls and we haven't had any new people interested in joining us in a long time, Its like that for a lot of us down here in Alabama and I don't know what we can do about it, it's concerning

    • @HeroesNextDoor
      @HeroesNextDoor  2 года назад

      Hopefully by watching this channel you can get ideas that might help. Is there paid departments that are around you that people are joining?

      @@HeroesNextDoor Yes and no, I live in Limestone county Alabama, which is the fastest growing county in the state. We border Huntsville/Madison metro area. While the career departments around us typically still have interest applicants have surprisingly declined for them as well. Unfortunately for the 100% volunteer side of things new applicants are virtually non existent. We have 14 fully volunteer departments in our county, and a 100% career department covers the city limits of Athens AL with 3 stations. Not just in my department but in a lot of our rural departments we really struggle to have enough manpower. For example there was a mutual aid request today from our career department for a wheat field fire. They paged out 3 vol. departments that I know of and maybe got 6-8 guys and 3-4 brush units and that's what I would consider a good day. We had no members available from my department at all as most of us have full time jobs out of town. Its only getting worse with the economy and fuel prices a lot of our guys are feeling the pinch and there's no kind of tax cut or fuel reimbursement at all in our county. We can't even get a $600 a year tax break for certified firefighters in our state to pass (but that's a story for another day). I am deeply troubled by this every day because you always have to wonder in the back of your mind how much could have been better if we had more interest
