Another hidden gem in my opinion is the Goblin house at Ceintuurbaan 251. Its a beautiful building by itself but all the way up there are a couple of weird green goblin sculptures. Very quirky and unique.
wow, those are really nice, I only knew the Beurspassage that I stumbled upon 😅 the first time I visited Amsterdam a few years ago, I really like it also, but I’m going to Amsterdam Thursday for the first time in a year, I am definitely checking the Mouse Mansion museum (the forever inner child in me!) and the Seven Countries houses, maybe keep the rest for other times😁 But I had to laugh when you said that some people consider the red light district or the flower market as hidden gems, I mean, what?!?!🤣
Any plans to hit the Efteling perhaps? It's really quiet there now. No waiting lines. Think about all those sweet views an Efteling video would generate :)
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld Oh, that's great news!! Looking forward to it. I heard that Wednesdays are the slowest and there's a calenders on their site showing how busy they expect the park to be. Have fun! Ps. Love the vibe in your videos.
@nateandkatrinadotheworld Well, I wouldn't plan to visit before October, you see, Dance Marcabre will open then, and in all likelihood, those with any interest would flock there the moment it opens. Though it could be nice at Winter Efteling if snow starts falling then.
We tried to film the café ‘t papeneiland but every time we go there it is packed. But it also ties into the Our Lord in the Attic, as there is a tunnel at ‘t Papeneiland (Pope Island) that also leads to a covert Catholic church.
Catholics weren't persecuted, the Dutch Republic was founded on the freedom of conscience, codified in 1579, and therefore religious tolerance. The state had a religion though, a brand of calvinism, and the catholics in general where still out to kill all protestants. So the catholics were kept on the tighest leash and could not have public display. Civil marriage was invented for them because these home churches had no authority to do a public service which marrying people by definition is. They also could not have processions, but in typical Dutch style a silent march without any catholic symbols was tolerated, people still do it, it's called the 'stille omgang'. But those hidden churches weren't really secret, everybody knew and no one had to hide their catholic faith, it just wasn't tolerated any claim to power, also not by presence in the public space. The jews were much less of threat, so they were allowed to build the biggest synagogue in the world. It's called 'de Portugese Snoge, it's still there, it looks a bit late 19th century but it is really from the 1660's. A bit of a gem too maybe. Mennonites, Lutherans or whatever enjoyed a bit more liberties too. Only with the fight over which specific interpretation on the specific brand of calvinism was the state's religion it got heated and heads were chopped off.
13:31 Ons' Lieve Heer op Solder wasn't secret. I mean, a bunch of people entering a house every Sunday... that won't be a secret for long. And it wasn't. This was a period of Dutch 'toleration': Catholics were allowed to worship as long as they didn't do it publicly. It was a pragmatic solution, given that about 50% of the population was still Catholic during this time.
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld The Amsterdam School (architecture) Het Schip is a little gem too, and does tours of other buildings in the contemporary style. The Tuschinsky cinema is a gem too.
Catholics (and other religions) were not persecuted. They (Catholics) just could not have churches out in the open. They had to do service indoors. They still were free to be catholics. Why do you think there is a very big Synagoge near Waterlooplein.
It all depends on the period. In 1578 for instance all Catholics were banned from the city, most went to Germany, but definitely after De Wit took over in 1650 Catholics were allowed to have hidden churches.
Amsterdam locals are so tired of all the tourists, the city is trying to discourage people to come. And here you are pointing out even more things to see. I will have to report this to Femke Halsema. But I must admit that all of your colours were on fleek this time. Pitty you didn't try to say 'schuilkerk'. Very very very nice video. 4.65K subs on feb 18th. Keep it up. Small steps.
Jan, if you were to think outside of your mindset you might realize that these videos bring Amsterdam into homes thousands of miles away. Traveling to Amsterdam via these videos is wonderful for "couch tourists". I believe that the Mayor of Amsterdam Femke Halsema would pleasantly agree. Keep up the great work Nate and Katrina!! You are appreciated very much.
Thanks for the tips. We are coming that way mid-July for three days precruise. Also, thanks for Uniglo tip. We now own two.
Happy to help! 😉

Good work guys! I live in Amsterdam and these are definitely more unique than the vast majority of most hidden gem videos!
Thanks! We really enjoyed filming this one!
There's also a village called Zevenhuizen (in South Holland), there's literally just seven houses in the entire village apparently 😅
Very cool! Talk about a small town! 😂
You have apparently never been there. Since they gave it the name, many more houses have been built.
Oh wow! We are launching our channel on Feb 29th and also have a video of the Muizenhuis!
Nice, we will be watching!

How did we miss this? We did a whole video on “Haunted Amsterdam”! Thanks for the tip!
Nice one. Good job showing some not so bad places in Amsterdam ;o).
Thanks for checking it out!
Everything outside of the canal ring is awesome though. Like oud zuid/zuid/de pijp/amstel/west/east even Noord nowadays.

Townhouses with stairs on the outside are classic American. Especially if you have 2 front doors, one at street level and one on the first floor.
Nice tour.
Thanks for watching!
Wow…ik heb deze nog nooit gezien! De verborgen kerk en de muizen huis zijn de mooiste. Er is ook nog een verborgen kerk of synagoge meer.
very nice video again, the mouse museum was very special
Thank you very much! You can see all the effort and attention put into it!
Like the music in the last segment... 😊
Thanks for watching until the end! 🙌🏻
cafe t papeneiland is not even near the red light district, but on the prinsengracht. 500 meters from anne frank house and near the noorder church.
Ha! These silly Americans think that Maastricht is near to Groningen.
We get lost.

Mooi commentaar, goed uitgelegd ❤
@@evaspook1252 I noticed there was an error, I typed brand of capitalism instead of calvinism. Edited now, Freudian slip?

More hidden gems: Begijnhof, Pampus and Vondelbunker
Begijnhof is only a hidden gem in the literal sense, not as a figure of speech anymore.
These are good! Maybe a volume 2 at some point!
