I was surprised how bad the movie was. I had very high expectations going in and I think that made for a harsher critique after viewing. The twist was something I predicted immediately after the fun house scene and I actually thought it would've been interesting to have "the switch" be a mid-movie reveal. The impostor's life is built on "the insidious switch" she did as a child; but it's still 'her life' that she built, so where do the characters go from there....
Instead I watched and became actively annoyed as the movie revealed this was not a 1-family doppelganger threat, but a clusterfuck of clones. And then there's the nonsensical plot that the 'tethered' mimic the lives of 'those above' (which brings up a question: why isn't the impostor above ground, who has No Soul, still acting out what the trapped girl below is enduring - oh wait, I remember, it's because she's "special"; groan--- my hopes of an impactful reveal of the twist were dashed instead of satiated by mid-movie. When it finally came to light in the end I just frowned).
Also Note, the attempt to salvage the movie's up front stupidity by claiming it's clever allegory and has deep symbolic meaning actually caused me a crisis of confidence in professional film critics who overwhelmingly labelled this turd a masterpiece.
The problem is: bad movies are typically never given the opportunity to be read as allegory and explained using context and addendum not found on screen. But "Us" is given that privilege. Given enough time and research I'm sure I could find a pearl of allegorical wisdom in the shittiest Roger Corman film, but I wont do that because films are supposed to be entertaining and coherent in their own right. In a good movie the subtle symbolism becomes a joy to learn about through my own research pursuits after viewing, given my investment in the film.
In sum, I will not grant to Peele what I have always denied to the directors of shitty movies. I have multiple degrees in social sciences and I am well aware of, and have sympathy for, the history of colonialism and the continued problem of racism. That knowledge will not guilt me into heaping praise on a mildly entertaining, but thoroughly aggravating, horror/thriller film.

put the holding hands across the country into practice. how would that work? there are only two possible options:
    1. join in where you are at any point of the line, the others next to you would have to slide a bit further to the left and right to accommodate your space between them.
    2. you go to the either end of the line and join there.
but that can only work for a few miles.
once it gets to a few hundred miles, a few hundred thousands of people, then you will have a problem when someone wants to join. not to mention you would lose objectivity of how straight the line would be and you may end up making a circle or a curve, but perhaps they use google map and gps coordination. not to mention any other obstacles like lake, wild animals, hills, etc.
also, where do they get the red jumpsuits that fit them perfectly?
where do they get clothes in general?

they made the dads of the both families bumbling morons....why? Is this what hollywood is trying to say....or jordan peele. They keep depicting men in general as weak and useless. It's pretty sickening. Also the fact the dopplegangers didn't kill the main characters makes no sense.....let alone letting her live underground for 20 plus years. On top of that, there is no way they could survive underground with that many mouths to feed with the intelligence of a mental patient

You see this movie is not a movie for entertainment this movie is a movie that is supposed to tell a story. In the United states this is how it is, they say that it's so glorified and then when you finally get here it isn't. In American media it's all about the "redeeming qualities" but this it trying to say that that is not the real world that is not how it is in America. You didn't like the ending? You were disappointed? Well yea dude that's the whole point.

Love your review. I guessed most of the movie about 20 or so minutes in but kept watching to see if it would really be that obvious and in hopes that if it was, it would be executed well... I could not take any of the villains seriously with their voices and weird screaming.. and the mom was the worst! She didn’t do anything, her kids defended themselves better than she did. She was the most irritating character to watch. Always doing the opposite of what I thought any mother or right minded person would do

Another main problem is about who Jordan decided to kill. He spent SO much damn time on character development that it came to no point when absolutely no one died; resulting in non-tense scenes etc...But ari aster on the other hand, hereditary (and probably midsommar) both developed characters wel, made viewers attached, then killed them off in perfect symbolic ways that made the movies twenty times better...

    Repost and addition:
Peele tried too hard to make a social commentary in Us that it ended up hurting the movie. And the logic issues you bring up are so distracting and puzzling that it becomes hard to try to enjoy the movie. One big logic fail is why didn't the family search the abandoned cop cars or police officers' bodies for guns. Police cruisers have shotguns in them as standard procedure.
Also, where the hell was the military? I highly doubt they would've been as caught off guard by the Tethered since they are heavily armed, highly trained, and their bases are protected very well with personnel and security systems while the Tethered have only gold scissors.

I missed parts of the movie, it was so boring and sucked when I got up to get water or go to the bathroom, i didn't pause it. I did finish it. Underwhelming. I give the director credit, he tried to be original and bold, but it fell flat. Tried to hard to be funny. Not suspenseful and scary at all. When the clone family first showed up, was kind of creepy, but got dumb quick. The plot is interesting in concept, but in execution, a little messy. The message or metaphor, did not have any impact. It was bad like the village. hehe

The biggest plot hole by far is the fact that if the clones mimic everything the originals do, then how can they eat exactly? Let's give them infinite amount of rabbits, let's pretend that only eating one kind of food is okay, even then they ONLY mimic their other half eating, the food is still not in front of them. Realistically they should have time to kill those rabbits, but in the movies logic they do two things at the same time, mimic to perfection and also do separate actions somehow.

  • @tigersjunkyard
    @tigersjunkyard 4 года назад +3

Agreed. The plot was absurd, nonsensical and a complete mess. I liked the story until it got confused about what sort of film it actually wanted to be. It started out as good, disturbing horror, but then devolved into a train wreck of preachy ham-handed symbolism that didn't properly work with the film as they had first set it up. You can't start out with a straightforward narrative horror film and suddenly decide 3/4 of the way through to make it an abstract allegory piece.
When I hear people say that the absolute nonsense in the film doesn't matter because it's about the message, it's like nails on a chalkboard. BOTH can matter. You can't present a message in a narrative film format and then not provide the most basic plot consistency. Like the government abandoned the experiment (never mind how the experiment works, considering clones managed to continue through generations without any intervention), but for some reason these people down below still have normal modern clothes and an insane amount of rabbits - which humans can't actually survive on - even though it appears the only people down there have the mental states of disabled children. That's just one tiny piece of so many nonsensical problems. Total fiasco. And I was really looking forward to it after Get Out....what a letdown.

I gotta tell everyone. The story makes no sense because i think he got that idea from the story of how the people in the mirror actually are alive and forced to do the same thing we do everytime we go to the mirror. Someone got switched and realized it too late when she saw everything were reversed like plate number, signs, etc.
I was 6 or 7 and was terrified at the story. Often i thought what if i got switched and didn't know it.
It works perfect if the concept is mirror. A bit supernatural. If it is clones underground... It's stupid.
I am from gen x, so is peele and i hope someone from my generation realizes this too.
I need to tell people this because of the praise like his story is breakthrough, it needs to be put to test and related or not, the mirror story needed to be made aware being first in the 80's.

I’m not sure if you’re talking about the weird laughing the Lupita does in the movie when you mention in in the first 1/4 of this video. If it is, that strange laugh that she makes is the same exact voice that Jordan uses in a skit from “Key and Peele” where he plays a killer being tracked down by a police officer (K.M. Key) IN A HALL OF MIRRORS.... Anyway, the laugh itself might have been creepy if I hadn’t already heard Jordan use this voice in a setup that also seems to be used in Us. Because it’s a unique enough of a laugh not to be random considering the director and so it becomes obvious and distracting knowing that it came from him.

Watching you struggle through the interpretation of this film is one of the more entertaining things surrounding this movie. Similar to the struggle of trying to wrap ones head around the plot of this misguided story. Seems like it started off as a relatively interesting concept but grew much too large for the creator to handle. It's at these times that a creator MUST GO TO THE BEGINNING of their concept and simplify it to make it concise and understandable especially if alligorical and metaphorical concepts are to be tackled appropriately. I don't know what's worse, watching a movie that is downright terrible from the beginning, or watching a movie full of potential go off the rails so horribly. 😟

Critics certainly praise certain movies for all kinds of reasons other than anything that has to do with the movie itself. Im sure part of it is politics. The other part is I do think movies are SO terrible now, that anything that comes along that's merely competent appears incredible. It's my big problem with Red Letter Media. "They actually got pacing and 3 act structure correct, therefore it's great!" Even if that story is uninteresting af.

I think the internet's hype culture is why so many people are disappointed with the film.Rotten Tomatoes has it at a 93% . This is Hollywood politics. Now I think "Get out " was decent. But for it to get a best pic nomination,Fuck No. It's Our current political climate. That's it. You're not even aloud to criticize this movie. Take a look at the comments on Stuckmann's channel. BTW he gave it an A- . Wonder when he sold his soul. @s.w.d4010 3 года назад +1

You are so right. Get out was way overhyped. Get Out was just a spin on Invasion of the Body Snatchers but it didn’t make sense. Why would rich, white people at the top of society want to trade places with a marginalized group? The movie showed us that black people still face discrimination within society, and if the movie tried to make the case that black people are more athletic or creative so they would be more valuable, that still doesn’t make any sense. The white person takes over the black person’s body and controls the cognitive & motor functions. That doesn’t mean that the black person’s athletic ability or talents are transferred. For example if an average person switched bodies with Serena Williams, they still wouldn’t be able to play tennis like her because they don’t have her tennis skills, they just have control over her body (Serena William’s body doesn’t automatically know how to play tennis). If the wealthy wanted to preserve their youth and strength ANY person that is young & strong would do. No matter the race. There isn’t any real advantage to being black in this society that is shown in the film. Jordan Peele is one of the few black directors in Hollywood, so no matter what he does everyone calls it brilliant when it’s not....look at Us. I think people are afraid to criticize his work because it would be seen as “racist” and black people (including a lot of successful authors, and actors) just give him a pass because he is black. But the reality is, Peele isn’t creating groundbreaking work...its mediocre at best. Get out was way overhyped and Us was a fucking mess. I say this as a Black man that appreciates good story telling.

Finally watched. Started off intriguing, just got worse as it went smh. Lupita did amazing though, acting-wise.

Jordan Peele is the black M Night. Not being racist, just trying to compare the two. But i will give him a few movies to redeem himself.

Sad part is I was a big fan of peele ...when he did comedy skits the thing is he’s trying a genre he’s not even good at and this movie should’ve been good cause he needed to redeem himself after ripping off get out

I literally couldn't finish the movie, it was so fucking cringy at a lot of points and the acting was so bad. Like at first I was intrigued, like the acting was alright, the cinematography was good, it was good at setting up the tone that it wanted, but then right when the people showed up BAM the switch flipped from good to bad.

I don't think either of Peele's films are that good. They're ok to watch, I don't dislike them... I just think they're extremely overrated. "Get Out" was considered a masterpiece; for the life of me, I can't figure out why.
Also, when did this government experiment end? Because the kids are fairly young, so it must have been going on up until a few years prior. However, during the flashbacks, from when the mother was a child, it seemed as though there wasn't any government supervision or testing. So who cloned the children?

It was just okay. What it tried to impart got tripped up by the lack of logic in places. Anyway, your video was okay, not sure you followed an outline or not, presentation was good besides the couple of desk thumps.

I dont think you understood the movie at all. Watch a theory on this movie bc The Film Theorists made a very good theory on beginning and the middle to go into the exposition.

I really liked the movie, but I also enjoyed your analysis of it. I'm sure you're much better at breaking down a movie than I am, but I think I'd rather stay bad at it an be able to enjoy a movie every now and then.

This movie was the worst “film” I have seen in at least 2 years. Top ten worst movies I’ve ever seen. The trailer and rotten tomatoes convinced me to redbox it. If I’d spent $30 with a date, to see this pile of shit in the theatre, I’d be fighting mad. Movie suuuuucked sooooo bad. Totally emasculated the Patriarch of the family, and made the white people look like pathetic weak bastards. Movie made me physically ill, how moronic and awfully executed it was. I want my $1.75 rental fee back and the wasted two hrs of my life. COMPLETE nonsense.

To me the point of the film was obvious, even though I thought the film itself was very poor,
the tethered are a representation of the underprivileged classes in America, they're living a lesser life than those in the upper class of society.
The film basically slaps you round the face with this point so much that it becomes boring and forgets that the purpose of a movie isn't to lecture you and shove a political agenda down your throat, the purpose of a film is to tell a good story and if it has a point , great, but that's not more important than the film itself being enjoyable.

This movie is so implausible. Millions of clones. Under your feet. Some connected to their host. And....they were abondened. Where to start...uggg.
This movie is so sucky sucky sucky sucky. Geez I would have preferred a supernatural angle. Not millions of clones, holding hands. Oh God, who ok'd this script. Good lord.
Was not scary, and no suspense. By the time I saw the underground compound, Iost interest. Movie gets a 1 out of 10!

You hit every point with this very bad movie, his plots are as creative as somthing a nine year old can write. Very stupid not entertaining at all its like he got lazy with the script. I truly felt a little insulted that he would try to pass this garbadge out as a movie. The sad part is hearing these waisted hippy wanna bees, try to make since of jordan peele lack of finnishing a thought.

Somehow I think you've forgotten that this is a fictional psychological thriller. They are supposed to be weird and not real. It wasn't his best work but come on. We get it, you don't like it. Move on.
