Jordan Peele likes the movies that keep us talking after we see them, just like ‘GET OUT’, and now with this movie ‘US’. In this funny video, we take a brief look at the US trailer, before going in-depth into our spoiler review. You get your ending explained in here, while also we take a look at some US Easter eggs and US theories that are floating around the internet. Things I noticed after watching Us for a second time
• The girl in the beginning playing rock paper scissors was the same actress from moonrise kingdom, who if you don't know, stabbed Lucas Hedges with a pair of lefty scissors
• The noise that Abraham (tethered Gabe) was yelling at on the boat was the tethered white dad. (When he gets on his boat when fighting Gabe he then makes that same noise)
• When Red was explaining the story, she says when Umbrae (tethered Zora) and Pluto (tethered Jason) ombre was born laughing (she died laughing) and Pluto was born in fire (he died in fire), it also explains why Adelaide had been upset when the tethered kids died.
• Kitty (white mom) on the beach she was clearly jealous of Adelaide's natural beauty, she clearly doesn't always get along with her husband, even joking that she would murder him and even mentioned that she had plastic surgery. When the tethered Kitty showed up, she pointed at her cheekbones and then sliced her cheek and when the tethered white dad was killed, Kitty's doppleganger started laughing.
• Looking back at the movie, knowing that the tethered Adelaide was the one we were following, it explains why she was willing to handcuff herself, why the og Adelaide said that the other tethered noticed were "special" ,probably explains why she looked more freaked out than her family, why she was so paranoid bc she knew the real Adelaide was always coming for her.
•The tethered were originally supposed to be controlling everyone above ground, but obviously it didn't work out and the opposite happened, except Adelaide & Jason. Both Red & Pluto were able to control their original. And when Adelaide & Red switched, when she was doing ballet, Red was able to control her, so in an weird way, the experiment worked.
Also. The Thriller t-shirt is not only a reference to how the music video ended, but how the film itself will end.
• It makes sense why Adelaide in white walked out of the car and was calming down Umbrae who was in the tree, because it was her daughter.
• Also explains why she got so emotional when Pluto walked into the fire.
You noticed how tethered Adelaide knew exactly where to go when looking for Jason? Like the original Adelaide didn't know how to get out as a kid. But the tethered Adelaide knew exactly where to go didn't have no trouble. I'm like she knows this place pretty damn well.
Teon Quant also the thriller was the reason for the red jumpsuits. Michael wore a red jacket and red pants. The tethered wore red and also had one glove like MJ. It is also a Easter egg for Freddy kruger. Wearing red with one brown glove. Also Pluto being burned is a Easter egg for Freddy’s burnt skin. Also The wolfman mask if worn by Jason. The movie wolfman is about a man and a werewolf, two souls sharing one body. Jason wears the wolf mask so is the monster and Pluto wears the more human mask so is he the good soul. Red also call adelaides kids monsters because Adelaide is tethered and she birthed the kids where red is human and she gave birth to the real children meaning it’s the woman who ultimately carries and nurtures the fetus before it is born.

Here’s exploring some concepts:
Firstly, Tethers aren’t creatures. They’re human beings bound in one soul, and without any alternate stimulus, they followed the general movements and actions.
The Tethered don’t have to do exactly what the above ground versions of themselves do, BUT, they are highly prone to doing so and hadn’t known that they could defy that duality until they had an external stimulus outside of the lab.
The fateful encounter between the two girls in the maze of mirrors occurs because the Adelaide above wanders the perfect direction to find the exit and meet each other. When presented with an opportunity to directly defy duality, that is when things are officially untethered between them.
Red followed through with other Tethers because other tethers feel a stronger urge to follow their double, therefore she had to in order to maintain a certain degree of balance within that society.
Once the other tethers are confronted with their normal versions, they are able to act further outside of their duality...all except Jason and Pluto. Pluto exclusively follows the actions of his controller only when Jason puts the mask on. It’s strongly implied that Jason is autistic throughout the story, so it’s possible that Pluto was born with a similar defect that denies him the ability to stop mimicking his other when the mask is worn.
When Adelaide switches places with Red, it was a literal representation of what Tethers actually are. Red, IS a tether, she’s not a human being who was trapped in the tunnel, she was a tether due to her circumstances. All of the Tethers are monsters due to their circumstances, not because they were directly made that way. Adelaide became a relatively normal human with some lasting circumstances due to trauma, but otherwise lived normally. That’s because Tethers aren’t an other, they’re us. You and I. There is no difference physically between the two, only what they’ve experienced up to that point and how it has affected them.
At the end of the story, the Adelaide that survives is the real Adelaide, because that’s the one that the world has experienced and come to grips with. Red, is the monster, the other who imposed her murderous will onto the characters. Adelaide, despite being born a tether, was the human being.
This is further expressed when Adelaide shows sympathy towards hero alter’s children. This is because Adelaide fully understands that they can be rehabilitated and made to be their being just by being pulled out of that situation. The adult tethers are far too gone to be saved, but Adelaide still held onto that hope when it came to the children.
In the end, the story about someone’s circumstances making them the monster, not that the monster makes their circumstances. Red was a human being forced into what Adelaide would’ve experience, and roughly became the same thing as the other Tethered. She was a tethered because of her actions, not her physical being.

The tethered got the jumpsuits from the government experiment. There's one line where Red says "you got birthday presents, we got cold, sharp objects" That might explain the scissors

Notice that the scissors are designed as two heads back to back
GingerLily 2019 they also represent duality and two sides. Just like 11 or 11:11 and even twins like the other families daughter. Adelaide goes to the beach and her friends bring the two twins. Another vision of 11 for her.

Also notice how those clones in the tunnels were walking around acting like crackheads down there. And the crack epidemic exploded in the 80's. I think that's an interesting parallel.

Jason's doppelganger was fascinated with Jason and wanted them to sync up. That's the whole scene with the two in the pantry. The tethered represent our darker side and once Jason embraces it, he's able to control it and kill it.
That's because Jason's a hybrid tethered that got switched before his introduction in the movie. Many clues gave it away, such as: people pointing out he was acting weird, at a time didn't speak, and he was off beat. Tethered Adel's real Jason's face and throat got burned, so he wasn't able to speak. Unfortunately, for tethered Adel, she had to watch her Jason walk into the fire. Watch as Adel and her Jason had a moment where you notice he wouldn't hurt her, nor she him, but the tethered hybrid Jason didn't want his life destroyed, so he had his hybrid kill himself. In the end inside the ambulance, Jason cannot speak because he is the same as Adel; originally from the tethered place. It also explains why the supposed tethered Jason was looking physically stronger than the other tethered.
What was messed up was the daughter being able to run fast, but her doppelganger was able to keep up with her. (Retcon maybe.)

This is easily disproved and you missed the point as in Jason is like Danny from the Shinning in his weirdness. It's a deliberate misdirection to get away from Adelaides behavior
So to debunk
Born out of Fire, the Tethereds name is Pluto, Pluto is also known as Hades which both are Gods of the underworld also Pluto is the known to be benevolent as he reigns over harvest and prosperity (your went way off with the planet thing)
Second the time line, 1 year. Your theory has holes because you are saying Red would teach ONLY Jason which is illogical, as no tethered speaks, secondly both would exhibit extreme behaviors especially since one lost his grandparent but was in this hell the other was normal brought down, so they wouldn't contrast they would both be fucked up. And on that we see that the parents if nothing else are attentive, Adelaide as a child overheard her parents talking with the therapist, the parents dialogue is a double entendre, but it's meant to let us know they realize that's NOT their daughter even the fathers uneasy reaction as he rubs her head
Next the idea that hes digging is weird is to confuse the audience and show your own bias. Him digging nor his behavior is weird. His is merely reserved and pays attention, but nothing else about him is off, 2 stuck up white kids saying hes weird why do you assume their assessment is correct. Even the father saying where did you pick up that language, is more a deflection away from him likely swearing
Next its confirmed 100% in the film, the tethered cant control the above the experimental failed which is why they were abandoned. Further he gives us tons of visual ques that the above control the below, start with Reds dialogue where she clearly says you open nice gifts, ours sharpe, you eat nice foods we eat rabbit, the dance Red who is an excellent dancer, learned ballet, we saw Adelaide below have awkward jerky movements same as when they fought, one was graceful in her movements the other clumsy. Third there is a long definitive montage as young Red walks through the park with her parent and young Adelaide below with hers, everything is copied in twisted ways below, that Automatically breaks any theory with Jason
But further to clarify what Jason is, and the other 3 children are all HALF. One above and below parent for each. So each is more connected one can easily assume. That's why Jason and Pluto are as different as they would seem. But what we really get from Jason and his behavior is the misdirection from Adelaide. We are told who Adelaide is from the beginning, we are told even more si throughout, her speech patterns when she gets freaked out talking to her husband is odd, when they eat dinner, she eats like a rabbit, we can assume shes a vegan but no is paying attention to her eating strawberries and only fruits and vegetables. At the beach she doesnt talk shes awkward socializing, she never drinks she only consumes water, everyone focuses on Jason but hes only following his mother in the car, she is supposed to be a dancer (as she hinted at one time she was great), but she has absolutely no rythem. By the time their friends die, Jason is the used to let us know something is wrong with his mother as her Tethered nature surfaces more and more.
So without Jason there is no way you WOULDNT realize that Adelaide isnt who she says she is.
That's Jason's real purpose, hes the vehicle by which we the audience observe and get distracted
By the end, Jason's look in the ambulance is one of, I know my mother is one of them, in fact hes the only one suspicious of her behavior. Meanwhile Jason can control his tethered because hes figured it out, (his quiet and observant behavior allows him to be the only one paying attention)
So we can forever put this one to bed, I'm not sure how anyone missed those ques to imply Jason but this one isn't close.
Besides the MOST important part of all of this, no one has explained why EITHER would logically be switched. Both are old enough to be aware, so why would either child form these bonds under these conditions? Your're saying that either parent/mother would willing give up their child which isnt a theme in this movie, that the children wouldn't notice or react, and that somehow this would benefit either mother in a plan.
That's why this doesnt fit as a twist, is bares no weight on the story telling at all. Who would it help

You can see Adelaide is the actual clone because you remember when she went to find Jason at the end she knew exactly where to go. Unlike human child Adelaide was lost in that mirror house.
Or she just went back to the last spot she remembered in the house of mirrors...

If Spill never ended, they'd be the biggest movie review site on RUclips by FAR. Their critical analysis was just as good as the best film pundits on RUclips today, but their humor was off the charts, especially with the animated sections. It's such a shame they were shutdown. I'd love for Korey to do more animation.

It seems like a lot of people are confused about what the Tethered are. The Tethered, from how I understand it, aren’t clones. They are doppelgängers that exist as human beings. Even Red states that “we are human”. Jason can’t be a hybrid because that implies that Adelaide is nonhuman, rather than one of a pair of humans that look the same and share the same soul. The connection between the Tethered individuals is more spiritual than literal, hence the inconsistency. You can say that the Tethered that live underground can see a window into the other person’s experiences without fully experiencing it themselves. At least that’s how I saw it.

I got the same take! The tethered were both physically and psychologically connected. Hence why Adelaide says they know where we are. For generations they mimicked the aboveground. The dance between the two breaks the physical connection.

Also the ending was an illusion to thriller. The same look lupita gives to the camera at then end "knowing" she is the tethered one as Michael does to the camera at the end of thriller. Plus with the shirt she won makes this waaaay more than a coincidence.

Clues that told me Jason was a clone the whole time. I hope you all go back and watch the movie again after you read these clues.
Clue 1. The family kept speaking on how different Jason has been acting since his grandmother passed away a year ago (there was a fire at that time), which made me believe in the second viewing that he was switched a year ago.
Clue 2. Jason had a new vocabulary of bad words that the family was confused about. His sister even asked him where he was learning those words from. I'm guessing he learned a few words from the real Adaline (remember, she's the only one who can speak underground). Also, I'm guessing before the switching, Jason was learning how to speak from the real Adelaide (red) since he's been living with red for a while till he was around 9.
Now some of you may say "but the boy's voice wasn't strained like red. That's because he wasn't choked like his mother red. Red had a choked voice because of her being choked as a child by the clone.
Clue 3. In the car, when the music came on, Jason couldn't get with the rhythm and didn't even know how to snap his fingers. Instead, he was snapping his fingers backwards. Although Adelaide couldn't get on beat either.
Clue 4. Jason was making sand tunnels. He's been living in those tunnels for a while before the switching.
Clue 5. Jason drew a third person picture of himself from behind looking at the homeless man. Most people who notices something that they want to draw will usually draw what they see, not a picture of themselves looking at what they're seeing(third-person point of view).
Clue 6. During the invasion, Gabe tells Jason to go get his bat. If you paid attention, Gabe said it as if Jason was supposed to know the location of the bat, but Jason replies "WHAT BAT?", as if he hasn't been in this house multiple times, but the sister knew exactly where it was and found it.
Clue 7. Jason kept trying to do the magic trick and couldn't do it. He mentions that he used to do the magic but couldn't remember how to do it anymore. Meanwhile, underground, Pluto would practice with the matches and would burn his face over and over again. Every time Jason fails the magic trick on ground, Pluto, underground, would do it with matches and burn his face over and over again.
Clue 8. Pluto never killed anybody. Red (the real Adelaide) allowed Pluto and Jason to go and play (I need you all to think).
Now, this is when Lupita knew that Jason was switched.
Clue 9. (Remember CLUE 3) When the family stopped in front of their burning car, they saw Pluto standing out in front of the burning car. Adelaide gets out of the car to go and kill him. When she walked up to Pluto, the boy started snapping his fingers correctly, which let her know that he was her real son. That's why when Pluto started backing into the fire (because of Jason) Adelaide started reaching out trying to save him, telling him to not go in the fire and that's when she became sad because that was her real son. Then at this moment, that's when Red (real Adelaide) takes Jason, her real son, down to the bottom in the tunnels. I'm guessing at this point, red told Jason that she was his real mother and decided to hide him in the locker so she can finish off the fake Adelaide.
That's why Jason was uncomfortable around Adelaide when she took him from the locker and probably explains the reason why he had a strange stare at her in the hospital truck. Although she was looking back at Jason with a slight smile as if she was mentally telling him "I guess we both have a secret that the other two know nothing about"

Im not sure becuz why would the real Jason not be able to talk and why walk on all fours? You said he got switched a year ago. That doesnt mean he wouldnt know how to speak or act all animalistic.
Also, how would the clone Jason even know about the magic trick? You could say becuz they are tethered but then that busts your whole "why doesn't he know where the bat it?" theory.
CommunityServesUs real Jason can’t talk because he burned his face. He acts animalistic because he has a love for animals which explains the reason why he hops around like a bunny(the bunny rabbits in the movie). But let’s go back to that question, because that pretty much exposes a lot of things we can speak on that doesn’t make sense with this movie. Adelaide gets switched but she still had the chance to escape, think about it. All these years she planned for the revolution...and somehow manages to find her way out to get back to the beach house? That means she knew where those stairs were. Although that brings up more questions. How big is this place underground? How many tunnels are there for thousands, maybe millions of clones to live in. There has to be multiple door ways to escape, they all couldn’t just have come from hat same spooky house. And if there’s multiple door ways we could guess that maybe there was another hidden door in the woods where the beach house is. I’m guessing that’s how Jason got switched during the burning last year.
And with Adelaide as a child, she could’ve ran back out to find her parents. Those clones weren’t gonna do anything ‘cause they were too busy mimicking the above.
Now about the magic trick. This is were you have to pay attention. In the closet, Pluto (real Jason) was actually teaching Jason how to do the magic trick. Which Jason should’ve know because based on how connected he was to the toy (never leaving it behind) he should’ve known how to do the magic trick.
With the sister’s clone, it made sense. Remember, whatever your hobby is the clone will take a toll on it even if you stop doing whatever your hobby is. That’s why the clone was able be a faster runner than Zora. Zora gave up on running track while the clone kept running. We saw this with Red and Adelaide when it came to ballerina. But with Jason, that doesn’t make sense to me because the connection between him and the toy are extremely close to the point where the toy was something he would never leave behind to forget about. And now all of a sudden he forgets how to do the magic trick with the toy. That makes no sense.
As far as the bat? That theory still exists. We would think he’s been to the house multiple times to know where the bat is but now he doesn’t?
Gabe: Jason hasn’t been the same since he last came here with his grandmother.
Red: Be careful, we don’t want to burn the house down.
(Red laughs)
Burning house, grandmother, multiple secret doorways. Those are all strong clues.
But I think you and I can agree that Get Out is better constructed movie than US. There are still things in this movie that doesn’t make sense but that’s what happens when a studio rushes Jordan write his next film.
Also, I want to say that I have a theory that US is possibly a prequel to Get Out.
It would have been much simpler if the clones wore the red jumpsuits their whole lives. The clothes thing raised way too many questions
Good point. It would have been even better if they were supernaturally made.
My boyfriend pointed out something interesting regarding how the little girl made it to aboveground. When the Original Adelaide was walking down to the pier and beach, the underground tethered needed to stay put for a period of time in order to stay on the escalator. OG Adelaide stayed put looking out at the beach so that was most likely when her tethered was going up the escalator and met with her.
2. I think the little girl was able to communicate with the entire country of the tethered because aboveground, Adelaide was traveling and living her life. If they follow their counterpart she had have made it to the east coast at SOME point in 20+ years. in the beginning of the movie, it mentioned all of the underground tunnels nationwide so that could make sense.
I’m calling it now... *shared universe.* The knights of the Templar are involved. Remember their hunting song, “Run rabbit, run rabbit, run run run” 🤷🏾♂️

Honestly that part made me laugh so hard, I couldn't take that line seriously and it didn't help that Red sounds like she's got a sore throat.

A great film overall. I loved all the hidden Easter eggs the director uses to further develop the plot. I don’t expect everything that he does to be “Get Out”, but it won’t keep his future works from being entertaining.
15:08 they kind of did that when the Kitty Teller characters clone put on make up. That can be seen as "I always simulated make up on myself for years and now I get to actually do it."
If H.G Wells' The Time Machine and Invasion of the Body Snatchers had a baby it would look like US.

I don't think that Jason was a Tether at the end. He gives his mom that untrustworthy look because he knew she was a Tether afterall and she gives him that creepy smile.

This is one film you gotta watch more than once to understand most of the movie. Some of the things they don't explain well like "get out". The twist I didn't like too much.
I just figured out that the red was able to go upstairs because her above ground version went in the funhouse.she was mimicking Addy's need to escape from her parents above ground.If anybody had gone in the funhouse who's clone was in there they would meet their self too.
They wore similar clothes to the people above- however when they decided to rebel, it looked like they received identical uniforms (when red explained organizing the rebellion to adelaide a flashback showed them placing their uniforms on their beds)
To be honest I still want to go see it a second time to catch any bits I missed

Remember that Addy was a little girl. She also probably went insane. The tethered don’t really have free will. So her mind functioned like a child’s would. Children don’t have the ability to dissect information the way adults do. I think the original Addy told Jason the truth.

I think they only mimic the movements that require the use of a soul aka when they create art, dance, fall in love... when one half of the Tethered participates in something that’s very ‘human’ they have to share that and they mimic that. Example, the dancing scene / Jason and Pluto both loving fire
There's a line of dialogue, She said that the scientist, gave up everything eventually. The scientist were proving necessities for the tethered until the 80's
So who was providing their necessities after the '80s? How were the rabbits being fed? How did Adelaide's Tethered become "untethered" and go replace the original? Why were the Tethered only copying people when it was convenient for the script to happen? Why would Tethered Adelaide attack the mechanical owl so furiously near the end when that was something the original Adelaide experienced when they were "probably untethered"? Where the hell did Red get a ballerina's outfit when her Tethered was off performing that routine? Did the Tethered sew their own jumpsuits? The movie's really well made but it doesn't stand up to scrutiny, and it's not allegorical enough for the lack of logic to be excusable.

I will say this... Even though you can't compare US and GET OUT 'cause they're two different films, I will say that GET OUT is a better-constructed movie than US.
I honestly liked “Us” way more than “Get Out” and feel like I’m in the minority on this. “Us” had plot holes of course but so did “Get Out” that whole convenient crawl space with all the pictures of past victims that Chris just happens to find ruins the movie for me at times. Honestly feel like “Get Out” is more praised just because of the racial metaphors. To compare the two isn’t fair as they’re two completely different movies. “Us” is a more standard horror movie and does exactly what it tries to do all while looking visually amazing and telling an intriguing story. Either way Jordan Peele is doing the damn thing and is revitalizing the horror genre

Wouldn’t it have been easier to just not let him find it and leave him in the dark? Did she do the same thing with her other victims? Why tf does she just leave that evidence in a box in the first place? I felt like if that was left out entirely and you just find out that Rose is evil just through the whole “Give me the keys” scene it would have been a lot more satisfying
@@Chris_MKII I personally found the photos effective because it establishes that chris is just another victim of her manipulation process. because previously our only indication of their abduction method was her brother physically wrangling victims.
The fact that we find this out just as he does makes the reveal even more potent because it allows us to put ourselves in his shoes.
As i said before she is a psychopath so at that point she really has no reason to care or not if he finds the photos and just wants to get him in the right place for her mom and brother to corner him before she drops her cute act.
This really got to me cos when he found the photos i was shocked to find that she was part of it but the way she continued to act so natural really had me confused because she was so convincing as an innocent outsider who was oblivious to what was going on and as an audience member you want to trust that she is good because up until the photo reveal you have no reason to suspect she isnt.

Did anyone else notice that in the home invasion, Adelaide tells Zora to put her shoes on and no one else. Later on Red sends Zora’s tether to chase her.
Why did it take so long for the original Adelaide to escape the underground. Like it didn't look like it was hard to escape at all. And I find it crazy that human Adelaide was started the whole move to kill the humans when she's human herself and wants revenge against the clone Adelaide for taking her life. So it's crazy she would influence the clones to do the same thing her clone did to her. I know they said something about privileged and slaved.

I think y’all missed something - the Tethered were devoid of a soul, and that had something to do with the attempted control of the surface world. The sci-fi only went so far - the logic of the Tethered was more like a fairytale.
There's too many plot holes and questions in this movie for it to truly be enjoyed.

Here’s some questions that I have:
1. If the tethered are forced to mirror the movements of the original then how did they even come above to the surface to kill their originals? That’s not a mirrored movement. They’re actively deciding for themselves to kill people.
2. If the tethered are the ones forced to mirror the original then why is the original Adelaide being forced to mirror the movements of the clone?
3. Why didn’t the original Adelaide just leave since she knew where the exit was?
4. How did the original Adelaide even know anything about the experiments since nobody down there could talk and, presumably, there was no facility that talked about the origins of the experiment?
5. The original Adelaide calls the day that they’re going to kill their originals “The Untethering,” but if they are already on the surface and can make their own choices then aren’t they already untethered? Why does anybody have to die?
6. Why did they wait so long to do the “Untethering”? Couldn’t they have done it much earlier?
7. If the whole experiment was a government operation then shouldn’t the U.S. government know exactly what is going on and know how to stop it? Was it a shadow organization? Wouldn’t they keep tabs on the operation to ensure that the clones couldn’t escape? Or just kill them all if they deemed it a failed experiment?
8. How did Jason make his clone mirror his movements? Nobody else has that ability, and if they did have that ability, then once again the tethered shouldn’t even be on the surface to kill anybody anyway. It can’t be because he’s a hybrid since Zora doesn’t show any ability to do that. It can’t be because of concentration since nobody even knew the tethered existed before the events of the film and they were still forced to mirror the actions of the originals.
9. How do they get any supplies down there?
10. How does the reproductive process work with the tethered? It’s one thing if the clones were deliberately created, but if you’re telling me that the tethered population is sustained through mirrored child births then that doesn’t make any sense.
These are all of the big questions that I have after seeing this twice. It’s a good movie in terms of the craft, but once you start thinking about the plot, it all starts to break down.
I think the movie is ambitious but it really doesn't hit the mark if you don't suspend enough disbelief to let certain glaring plotholes go over. Great ideas, great metaphors to the human condition but the writing missteps are played off as ambiguity and once questioned, opens up even more inconsistencies. Not a "must-see" but a much appreciated approach to filmmaking.

I think her motivation wasn't to spread awareness to the people they were killing, but to the government for abandoning them (a metaphor for those today who feel like the government is abandoning them). I guess they wanted the government to see them line up and go "Oh shit...those guys...whoops."
I actually understood the premise from trailer (it telegraphed clearly where it was heading with the nature of the Tethered) while the twist reveal was given within the first 5 minutes of the film (one of the aspects of the film I greatly praise and do believe Peele is talented as a writer) through the attentive details given with the shirt and ultimately what the scene relates to. I still believe it is a very ambitious and commendably crafted horror thriller with very heady themes and conflicts that relate to duality of human nature and the disparage of those civilized and forgotten in a very genre-esque way. However, it doesn't quite land smoothly with its end point in providing the goal of the Tethered and how that character "twist" literally raises more questions about their nature and how they were able to recreate and reproduce exact copies throughout the film as well as the point of their conflict. That I believe lies at the heart of the criticism for the film's finale, for a writer to have such logical and precise writing in his first 2 acts, for it to kind of go over the top and fall into those overblown trappings of the horror genre in the climax, kind of was a letdown and feels a bit disconnected from the majority of the film. This is still better than most horror films on the market right now and I would be glad to see it again but I feel with another pass at the 3rd act, it could have been another classic or satisfying film overall like Get Out was.
As soon as Adelaide's mother said, "I just want my little girl back," that combined with the "she won't talk" bit made the twist obvious to me. I kind of wish they would've obscured her mother's words a bit or cut her dialogue shorter earlier in the movie, because that would've made it less blatant. Then again, I watch a ton of horror movies, so I think I'm always ready for switches like that.
I think the Hands Across America was for the shadows, not the originals. Some of the shadows underground probably rebelled against the idea of killing the originals and taking over the surface. The shadows that joined hands could've symbolized an alliance for their rebellion.

Just putting this out there, Jason can be a tethered. The scene where hes walking in the fire can actually be Pluto controlling Jason. Pluto is sacrificing himself to what he loves so that Jason can get kidnapped. "Red" was waiting for Jason to back up so she could snatch him and run, Pluto revealed his face to Adelaide to show that he was the real one and that's why she got so emotional to him walking into the fire. He was her real kid.

Been waiting on this. 70 million the 1st weekend I’m going again today. Can’t stop thinking about this film. Just need to hear the exposition again. But the movie is brilliant. I don’t have as many questions as others just how was red and (fake Lupita) able to still dance and mirror each other if they switched out? Or does it not matter since they’re already cloned?
I think the idea is that there really isn't a difference between the people above and the people below, no biological difference at least. The only reason why the people above are in control is because of their circumstances, they haven't been driven mad by being trapped in an underground tunnel system their entire lives. I think the tether goes both ways, because honestly how many times have you done something that made no sense to yourself?
And concerning the dancing scene, the dance they perform is a duet, and they each perform half of it.
That part about the sexy sax man from The Lost Boys had me laughing hard. You guys are my favorite for movie reviews. I say that being a viewer of every one out there who is popular. Consider this DT,maybe the Jason we were following was the tethered. Remember, Jason had been acting strange for a year, following the death of the grandmother. He couldn't figure out the magic trick,even though he had done it before. He was also locked in the closet for a while before he was found by his family. I think u can control the other once someone has taken full control of the wheel(so to speak). Also remember we see a glimpse of this bc Adelaide learned how to dance FROM Red while she was underground even though she was born above ground. This explains how Jason was able to control Pluto and walk him into the fire. Also it would explain why Jason wasnt really scared of his tethered
I really found that last shot, combined with that high note in the song the most haunting thing in the movie. I mean the fact that all those Tethers took out most of Santa Cruz was one thing, but learning right at the last minute that this has been going on throughout the whole COUNTRY?! And at the same time no less?! THAT’S TERRIFYING! And the thought of trying to figure out what would happen when the family reaches their next destination makes the thought even more frightening even with the extra questions that that last shot brings with it.
The Hands Across America thing was *freaking dumb* to me, and I was like, "Uh...okay."
The tethered showed more unity and oneness than the actual humans. In the 80s, hands across America had gaps, but in the movie the tethered were definitely solid. It’s like the one thing that gave them purpose

I caught it when they started holding hands. When the movie began, I was like why am I watching a little girl watch a damn commercial on a television on a movie screen. It did not make sense that they were holding hands then it came to me and I got mad. Who wants to know the ending before the movie ends anyway.

Pluto’s mouth was burned shut. Look at it again, also he was building sand tunnels. Who builds tunnels at a beach. Usually it’s castles animals hell even mounds.
I thought it was interesting that Adelaide seemed concerned when the Tether versions of her children were dying more so than her own children at that time. Here it was because she was the Tether herself. Plus her parents thought she had PTSD since she wasn't talking. It was because the Tether didn't know how.

Honestly the movie had a lot of really cool and interesting ideas that would've been really great if fleshed out in a series like a Netflix or something like that, but instead we had more questions than answers. But I guess the movie wasn't about all that minutia and just about the weirdness.

To the clothing argument. Someone above ground had to make the clothes so the tethered below made close and someone above ground sold clothes so someone underground "sold clothes" of course with the movie like this you have to take some suspension of disbelief just like Spider-Man into the spider verse makes no sense when you really think about it, its just a good story.
I think many of these things are explained by Red leading them. There is rarely something special about Lupita's character and her tethered. This whynshenwas able to find her way out the tunnel. Once switched, shenwas able teach the tethered to break their bond and organize. We have to remember that the events we see in the movie are 30 years in the making
Thanks for the review guys! "That don't make no sense!" LOL! That was me minutes after discussing things with my friends. What I love about the genius of Peele is that (in and interview he said, and bless this man) he directs the movie thinking that "The audience is smart." There are so many details. My friends noticed some things and I noticed other things and we put it together to understand the movie a bit more. Peele also respects the diversity of intelligence in his audience - knowing that people see things differently and will pick up on different things.
If you think about it too logically it gets mind-boggling - like where did the tethered get all the scissors and red jumpsuits from to stage their nation-wide coup? And me thinking... Umbri did track just as Zora did. Red did ballet just as fake-Adelaide did. So why didn't people treat Umbri as a "leader" seeing her run as if she was controlling herself - like they saw Red do when Red danced ballet? Like shouldn't all the tethered athletes be revered by the tethered then?

This movie's biggest flaw was actually showing the twist instead of leaving it to our imaginations. Imagine if Childs started transforming at the end of The Thing.

But then that would distract the audience from the message of the film. He didn't want us to get stuck thinking about that.
He told us the twist, because he wanted to show if you give the lower class the same opportunities of the privileged, without anyone knowing that person is of lower class...they can still thrive and flourish.

The point is that you can’t say for sure Child’s is not the thing. There is absolutely no evidence that points that he is not, but we can assume from minor details that he is.
We could assume the mother from Us is the Original tethered by her Mannerisms... spelling it out lessened the mystery and cleared doubt. There were multiple themes in this movies, privilege, duality & consciousness being a few. The themes were realized well before the revelation & it does not take exposition to make us aware well after the fact. Other than that imo it was a great film with a good message.

Itsy Bitsy Spider foreshadowing: The whole movie follows the lyrics to "Itsy Bitsy Spider"When Lupita's younger character gets lost at the beach, it starts raining and she walks into the House of Mirrors. "Down came the rain and washed the spider out". Lupita's clone is the spider. There's a random shot in the movie of a Toy spider and a real one. Notice when Lupita's character is pinned against the glass there's a toy spider there. In the beginning of the "Hands Across America" commercial it asks a question "What has 12 Million Eyes, and 192 Million teeth?" A GIANT SPIDER. "IT" reference.
