on the subject of Chales XI one shouldn't overlook that he completed a massive military reform that created the Swedish allotment system (Swedish: indelningsverket) a system that allowed for Sweden to have a professional army that was economically maintained in peacetime. The Allotment system that supplied the troops for the so called "Carolean Army" is one of the main reasons as to why sweden held out in the Great Northern War for 21 years, instead of the war just being a short invasion and rape of Sweden. The allotment system didn't only create a professional army for sweden, it also enabeled the swedish army to be roughly twice the size per capita of comparative european armies at the time, as well as being able to assemble and stand ready to march in about half the time as comparative european armies at the time.

I totally agree. While Charles XII was a great general (king not so much) his father was the one who created the Swedish war machine that he later commanded. I also found the border-line ignoring of Charles X pretty confounding considering his victories against Denmark which gave Sweden its southern borders (which are relatively unchanged to this day). I see why he would focus on Gustav II Adolf and Charles XII but there was other kings in between that played an important role.

Yeah, it was pretty much the same thing that happened to Frederick II: His father made the military reforms and raised his son in a military setting, and his son used that new military to make his conquests.
Goes to show that great militaries need two lifetimes to become legendary

Really underselling the ability and victories of Charles XII here. The man absolutely thrashed far bigger enemy armies time and again. He was the greatest Swedish king since Gustavus Adolphus himself. His eventual defeat doesn't change that.

    • @TheRogue576
      @TheRogue576 6 лет назад +71

Agreed, the video just kinda dismisses him as this inexperienced child that caused the Swedish Empire to collapse. Try fighting a war at the age of 18 on three fronts against some of the most powerful countries in the world. The entire population of the Swedish Empire in 1700 was roughly 2.5 million and Russia had 14-16 million. You then also need to add in the populations of Poland-Lithuania (20,000) and Denmark-Norway (no exact date around 1700 but had a population of 13,150,00 in 1645, likely even higher than this). All together, Sweden had roughly 2.5 million against the combined strength of Russia, Denmark-Norway and Poland-Lithuania with ROUGHLY 15,151,500.
After you look at these figures, it makes you wonder how Sweden won any victories at all and endured the 21 years of war it did.

He was a fool. He knew how to win a battle but that was all he cared for. His successes led him to leave all political reason behind and go on an adventure trip across Europe instead of capitalizing on them and come to an advantageous peace. He was brave and a great leader in battle but unfit to rule a country.
It's pointless to look at the odds and marvel in the glory of his battles. They all amounted to less than nothing for Sweden.
I understand why he is so popular and has metal songs about him. Big battles are for boys. Politics are for men.

  • @TheFenderBass1
    @TheFenderBass1 6 лет назад +151

You overlooked Charles the 11th really much. It was due to his military reforms that sweden in the great northern war were so successful leading up til poltava despite them being outnumbered in every battle. Sweden basically dominated the battles until they got defeated at poltava.
And no the swedish empire did not decline because europeans adapted sweden tactics. (they obviously did, but that isnt why the empire fell) The great northern war is the reason why the swedish empire fell. Up until poltava sweden was at its strongest.
And since you disregard the reforms issued by Charles the 11th and the military tactics used during the great northern war by Charles the 12th its easy to miss that swedish tactics during this time were not like other european nations. Sure they all used line infantry, but sweden unlike many other nations fought higly aggressively and also fought very fast. I actually wrote a scientific essay on this topic if you are interested.
Otherwise pretty good video. (I am swedish so I learned alot of the swedish empire in school and on my freetime thats why I am nitpicking)

Im Swedish and it's a pleasure to see videos of our old empire.
    Fun fact:
During the later stage of the Great Northern War, thousands of swedish soldier surrendered and were held in Russian POW camps until the war ended. After the defeats at Poltava and Perevolochna there were about 20,000-25,000 Swedes that capitulated Individual surrenders were uncommon, usually a large unit surrendered all its men. Most of them were put to work in Ukraine, Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Another large group was moved into Siberia and Ural, where they start to work in mining under command of Vasily Tatishchev.
About 8,000 Swedes joined the Russian Army to survive, so Peter I put them in Astrakhan Garrison and on Ural Cossack Line to protect Russian land against Kazakhs and Kirgizian raiders, where they joined the military expeditions of Bekovich-Cherkassky to Khiva, Swedes quickly turned into Eastern Orthodox Christians and got under linguistic assimilation with the local Russians. So, many Russians have Swedish roots both from Rus vikings and from later encounters.
    Another fun fact:
After Poltava a couple of hundred swedish soldiers deserted and ended up in Hungary and by that time Hungary was in a war that was called ''Rákóczi's War of Independence'', it was a part of the '' Spanish Succession'' most of these Swedish soldiers conscripted as mercenaries. So In 1710 Rákóczi admitted the Swedes into the demoralized Kuruc army. The Hungarian-Polish-Swedish-French army was close to victory against the Austrians in the Battle of Romhány, but the last of Rákóczi's forces was crushed in the course of a Austrian counterattack.

Nice video, but let me correct you; we did not take a neutral chance during the Napoleonic wars. We took part in the war alongside Britain, against after Napoleon unleashed his continetal blockade. It was in this war that we lost Finland in 1809 since Russia (which took it) was in an temporarly alliance with Napoleon. After that, we pulled us out but joined the war again in 1812. We took part in the battle of Leipzig and later took Norway from Denmark which was allied with Napoleon.

Another interesting and entertaining video. But I did see and hear a few inaccuracies in the video:
    - Charles the 12th died in Norway during a siege, not in battle. There are theories about it being a Swedish noble doing the deed either to gain power or to end the war.
    - Denmark was a cobeliggerent of The Great Northern war from the start but was quickly dealt with before they rejoined after the Battle of Poltava.
    - Sweden/Finland did not lose Viborg/Viipuri as shown on the map in the Karelian Isthmus. Finland held that town and area until after the winter war.
    - Sweden owning Wismar is not shown on the map. It was sold in 1803.
    - It was not Denmark who gained german lands during The Great Northern War but Hanover and Brandenburg-Prussia.
    - Also worthwhile to add is that Sweden got rights to collect a big part of the tolls from merchants travelling through the Polish-Lithuanian rivers leading into the baltic.

    • @antono7384
      @antono7384 6 лет назад

There's one issue with that statement.
    He was killed fighting *Norwegians*
Don't get me wrong, Norway *was* in a personal union with Denmark from 1380 to 1814.
But we where *not* a part of the Danish *kingdom* but rather a separate kingdom with the same monarch for most of our time under Denmark.
We came under Danish controll in 1380 and till 1661 we remained a different realm with different laws, a different goverment etc, etc.
Our separate "riskråd" ("The Council of the Realm"/"The Council of the State"/"Privy Council") wasn't abolished till 1536, and when Denmark-Norway implemented laws to become a absolute monarchy in 1660 we didn't start signing those laws into place in Norway till 1661.
After 1660 (and among other things in 1718 when he was killed in Norway) we *where* a different ethnic group and different culture and while technically integrated the process was less then perfect to put it that way...
Or in other words, in peoples minds Norway where still a seperate realm/entity even if it *technically* was integrated into the Danish Kingdom in 1660.
So most people here would probably strongly oppose the idea that he was killed by Danes when he was in fact killed by a mostly Norwegian garrison of Fredriksten fortress.
We where still a different *people*.
That said, our shared king was essentially worshiped almost religiously so actually *leaving* the union was unthinkable for most of us.

As a swede I feel like I should explain some things.
    1. To call Karl X Gustav incompitent is not just as he completely destroyed Denmark by crossing the ice covered Öresund, bringing in Skåne and Halland to the kingdom.
    2. The importance of Karl XI is often overlooked. He managed to integrate the counqered areas from Denmark very efficently during his reign and keeping the peace, allowing the reform of the swedish army making it a true force to be reckoned with. The army was made professional and allowed the army to be quickly mobilized in case of war aswell as keep the soldiers morale very high. This is how his son managed to have the army he had.
    3. The early stages of the great northern war are some of the most famous battles in Swedish history. Denmark was indeed in the war and was swiftly defeated trough the territories in Saxony and signed an armastice within a week. The battle of Narva 10 000 swedish soldiers held off and defeated the russian army of 40 000. Karl XII could have won the war if he had not spent as much time trying to puppet Poland-Lithuania. He also became over confident and marched on Moscow while the russians applied the famous tactic that would beat Napoleon and Hitler. Using the winter and burning of villages. After Poltava he escaped to the Ottoman Empire to recieve aid and ended up staying for several years. As he came back to Sweden Denmark had rejoined the war and during a siege of a fortress in Norway he got shot when inspecting the trenches.

Interesting. Well done as usually Armchair Historian. I´m Swedish myself. When it comes to the 30 years war it was not as much a religious war at it has usually been described, because the goal for Sweden, and it´s ally, the predominantly catholic France, was to decrease the power of the Austrian emperor. Christina and Karl X Gustav was not totally incompetent. Actually Karl X Gustav increased the Swedish teritory, a lot, and in his days the Swedish empire was the largest it has ever been. In the video Karl XII is portrayed as having been killed in battle when he was on horseback, and hit in his chest. Actually he was standing in a trench, when being hit by a bullet in his head. It is true that the great Swedish empire ended with the great northern war 1700-1721, but at least Sweden was on the winning side against Napoleon in 1814, together with Russia, Prussia, Austria, Britain and others. However, as You mentioned, Finlad was lost to Russia. This was because in the year 1807 Russia temporarily switched side in the European conflict and supported Napoleon until war broke out again between Russia and Napoleon in 1812. It was a little like the Molotov Ribbentrop-pact when the Soviet Union supported Hitler in 1939-41. In 1808 Russia invaded Finland - like the Soviet Union did in 1939, so history partly repeated it self.

Great video to follow up the video on Peter The Great. I do feel however that Charles XII didn't receive enough coverage as he should of done. Like Gustavus Adolphus, Charles XII was an excellent tactician, being able to win against his opponents whilst outnumbered sometimes as much as 1-4 on many occasions such as at the Battle of Narva(1-3/4), and the Battle of Holowczyn(1-2). The reason why Sweden lost the Great Northern War is hotly debated, but it certainly wasn't because of Charles XII's tactics. The video i feel sweeps Charles XII under the rug as being this inexperienced child which he certainly wasn't, at least as far as his tactics are concerned.
Overall though this is a good video that gives a basic view of the rise and fall of the Swedish Empire. Great work!

    • @Nimroc

Charles XII wasn't present at the battle of Fraustadt, the swedish at that battle was commanded by Carl Gustav Rehnskiöld, in fact there are multiple swedish generals during the war that won battles against much larger armies even without Charles XII commanding personally.

Ah yes, you're right. Battle of Helsingborg is another good example of that, Narva and Holowyzcyn still apply however.

So I am a Swede and in this comment I will put timestamps in the video for corrections and more explanation c:
    0:50
Partially controlled Sweden, Norway, and parts of Denmark. No direct control. Buut basically nothing back in time was direct control sooo... yeah.
    1:15
To pronounced Vasa, think of it as the English word Vase.
    2:20
Also known as Gustavus Adolphus II. Basically no one in Sweden calls him The Great.
    2:40
Good joke but next time take a moment to find a Swedish driver's licence for extra fun.
    3:25
I like to add to the text that the colonies in Africa and America were not long-lived due to Sweden's financial power compared to the Dutch and Brittish.
    4:10
Now do not quote me on this but I think the doctrine Gustavus made was used all over Europe. I am not 100% on that though so if anyone knows better let me know.
    4:40
Small note; There's speculation that the way Gustavus died was because an enemy soldier came up to the wounded king and asked him who he was. He answered that he was the King and the soldier shot him dead. That's the story at least.
    5:10
Nice touch to make Christina cross-eyed. I am not sure if this was the intention but she was a Catholic.
    6:20
Denmark was in that war. They joined but got their butt kicked at once by Karl but no including them is doing the Danes an injustice especially since later in the video you mention Denmark took land.
    6:50
There's no speculation how Karl died. He was in a trench and not on a horse. He died leaning over the edge of a trench and said "Don't worry men, I am fine" or something like that. It was a shot from a pistol. Nobody to this day knows if it was a shot from an enemy or friend since the bullet wound is on the side and the bullet itself was probably a button from his coat, which was a piece of clothing he tore up on a daily basis.
    Conclusion.
Good video. A Some misshaps here and there but to be honest no one is perfect and I think it was a great summary of the Swedish Empire.

      Let me comment on your comments;
It's Gustav II Adolph, or just Gustavus Aldolphus
Charles was shot by a Norwegian soldier during the siege of Fredriksten, every other interpretation is pure unfounded speculation. In the words of a Swedish historian, "Charles the XII had been at war for more than a decade, and his luck had simply run out." In other words; if you stick your head above the parapet, you will get shot at some point

@@kstreet7438 That's not true, the reason they don't give detailed descriptions in an early stage of the investigation is because they don't want to influence witnesses. Have you ever reported a crime to the Swedish police? They ask you upfront for ethnic characteristics because they, unlike your claim, are more interested in actually finding the suspect than appeasing the cultural marxists. Also, have you read their reports on sexual crimes(googla "lägesrapport över sexuell brottslighet" eller någonting sådant, rapporten finns tillgänglig som pdf) and they're quite forthcoming in it. Also, the reason why they don't say afghan or middle eastern in relation to an outdoor rape is because we all already know that. You, me, the police and everyone else already jump to that conclusion anyway.

Minor Inconvenience which was just the animation but oh well I'm nerdy like this:
Charles XII didn't die on a horse. On November 30th, 1718. the sky was dark. Fires on the edges of fort Fredriksten (now Halden) illuminate the town. The king rears up above the trench for the last time. a quiet thud hit the trench. The king lay there lifeless, with a projectile entering and exiting right through his head. Nobody knows who shot him to this day.
