    On symbolism:
    I think the symbol of water is about purification, in almost a baptism kind of way. In particular for Oliver, who suffers from more internal conflict around his attraction. Swimming is usually his idea, and he often dunks himself in water when he feels impure, I think. After they first consummate their love, they wash themselves in a lake - and the camera makes it clear that they are keeping their distance from one another. They have a brief day in which they are both feeling ashamed and like they aren't sure if they want to forget it happened. As much as it's a comical scene, I think the scene that evening where Oliver briefly goes down on Elio is a revelation for his character. It's him finally letting go of his shame.
    I think this biblical "baptism" symbol goes along well with the "forbidden fruit" symbolism, which... doesn't require much explaining.
    And the fly I think goes along more with the theme that Elio's father expresses to him: that you shouldn't resist negative feelings. You shouldn't shoo the fly away. Sit with it, in discomfort, because joy and bitterness are inseparable. The fly appears a few times, and always when a character is in a state of emotional angst. When it first appears, Elio first tries to blow it away, but then he decides to ignore it and touch himself thinking of Oliver. I think it's a very subtle but very effective symbol. Emotions approach you like a foreign force sometimes, and they can make you feel ashamed, dirty, or sorrowful. But pushing those negative feelings away also crushes your joys and desires.

      Very well put, I think you're on to something there. It definitely has a cleansing connotation, the forbidden fruit imagery is spot on.

      Anybody can please explain the meaning of the short scene which has been done in negative effect, when Oliver looking at Elio sleeping the night before their separation?

    • @upchuckles243
      @upchuckles243 6 лет назад +13

      Le Anh Quoc, There are 3 close ups of Oliver that the audience sees, but Elio does not. When he talks about the knight who can't express his feelings, after he tells Elio to drop his shorts and then closes the door on him, and after Elio falls asleep on their last night together.
      In each of these scenes, Oliver is trying to make a decision. In the first, he's deciding whether or not he wants to speak or to die, like the knight. (He looks conflicted.) In the second, he's deciding to go all in with his love affair with Elio (He looks happy.) And in the third, he's deciding to leave all of this behind when he returns to America (He looks heartbroken.)
      The core of his character is that he doesn't share these conflicts and feelings with anybody. He puts up a facade of confidence and strength because he's afraid of being vulnerable. That's the big difference between him and Elio. Elio accepts his feelings and shares them with others, whereas Oliver is characterized by privacy and self-denial. It's inevitable that it leads to him remaining closeted.

      It'll probably go up to a 5 on a rewatch but I try to be as conservative with my 5s as possible. Tend to give 4s out a bit too easy though :P It is a really beautiful film, for me a 5 or 6 would be a game changer that pushes cinema in a complete new or different direction. Thanks for watching!

    The film just drowns you. I insist you see it in theatre instead of small screen, and just surrender to its beauty and let those tears flow! THIS IS A RARE GEM! The book and and the film both created to destroy you. It is that powerful, no matter what your background and history is.

      Agreed!! The movie and book both destroyed my soul COMPLETELY. I immediately read the book right after watching the movie because I have so many questions in my head that I believe that could be answered through the book itself. Although the story is specifically addressing gay love story, it also can be very much relatable to me of my past on so many levels in terms of the heartbreak and the complex feeling that I once encountered and it's sort of therapeutic feeling to have experienced both watching and reading it.

    For me....the symbolism of the statue submerged in water being fished out denotes Oliver's character. Oliver makes it evident that his father doesn't approve of homosexuality and therefore, Oliver is forced to suppress those feelings. The mentioned statue, which has not a "single straight line" is literally the image of homosexuality. Thus, to me, it represents Oliver freeing himself from his self imposed drowning. and accepting who he is.

    I could never convey into words, as eloquent as yours, how much this film has moved me. I saw it this past Sunday and have become totally obsessed by it. The beautiful and tender love story that develops, and ultimately ends, made me cry like a baby. It made me realize that I've never experienced love like that.. that because of how much it hurts < i've not allowed myself to open up like that and really let someone in. Maybe that's where the obsession has come from. I absolutely loved it.

      Roberto Ignacio It is a great feeling loving someone so much. Though, most of the time, hurts us to death, it still makes us feel alive. Honestly, I miss feeling the feelings again: the sleepless nights, the tears on my pen, the pensive music, the appreciation of many things around, the dreams, and the waking up in the morning with something so heavy and painful in your heart. 😍😍😍😍
      Well, can't to watch this movie...😀

I agree this should sweep oscars but as they're political it looks like this year will acknowledge the #metoo movement and focus on films like Lady Bird moreso which is definitely a good thing. Furthermore, In a cynical way of thinking and don't think this is right, but the academy awarding a lgbt story last year with moonlight might mean they don't give call me by your name the same kind of Awards. Spazout13 My thoughts exactly I would rate it 5 !! I can totally understand Elio & Oliver’s love & relationship!! It reminds me of my relationship with my female best friend in high school. To me I think the film is about these two souls who are straight but only gay for each other ( I think ). Their love & desire for each other is so deep that they didn’t mind to take it to that level ! Same like mine !! I’m only gay for her ONLY FOR HER 💋🌸 22 years & I still love her 💕

    OK FilMyWatchlist - don't say you weren't warned :)
    May I take the liberty of expressing my view on yet another forum (I’m getting as addicted to these reviews as I am to the actual movie)?
    Many people have mentioned Elio’s antagonism to Oliver right from the start which changes over the period of the movie. Speaking as a gay guy of many years standing -70 this year in fact - if someone like Armie Hammer had swung into my circle, my seething 17 year old mass of hormones would be immediately aware of his animal attractiveness. Elio is dismissive of Oliver the Usurper as the car arrives and on looking down from his window, but it is completely believable that Elio would have been struck by Oliver’s looks. Lust at first sight! Having shaken hands, he doesn’t really look him in the eye until after he closes the bathroom door while prattling on, by which time Oliver is out like a light. Having no chance to continue with general polite conversation, Elio leaves disappointed to have made no contact.
    It is a two way thing as well. In the same way that Elio re-adjusts himself getting off his bike after missing Marzia, and after kissing her as “Sonny & Cher” arrive, Oliver does the same at the initial café conversation scene. That part of my anatomy was always uppermost in my mind during my salad days. If not actually affected, Oliver nevertheless checks himself and adjusts his zip. For many of us, checking bulges and gluteal curves etc is always part of the assessment as well e.g. watching Oliver dancing. Poor Elio has to “hide” his erection when Oliver attempts to haul him to his feet to go swimming, and Oliver would have noticed (trust me, he would) and was sufficiently considerate to leave and allow Elio to sort himself and get into his swim wear. The big O was quite relaxed at being sprung partially dressed.
    I know this is all hypothetical, but let me assure you I have had similar situations way back when. No, no Armie Hammer, but an attractive guy who for some reason was attracted to me, much to my surprise (self image issues even in the 60’s LOL). It took me a while to realise he was not making fun of me when he paid tentative compliments and initiated halting social passes. As a means of self defence, I built protective barriers until I was reassured of his attitude, but still made sure I was close to him when he was around my group. I find Timothée’s representation of being eager to help and yet still appear cool is so accurate. Oliver eventually tells Elio that his experimental shoulder touching at the volley ball game was him trying to establish something, and Elio’s twitchy reaction made him think he had picked up the wrong signals, so Oliver had apparently got some indications of interest earlier on. Even now, my gaydar is notoriously unreliable, and in my youth, I just wanted anyone I fancied to be available.
    With all of the circling round Elio and to a lesser extent Oliver do, it is a matter of trying to get things to work in your favour without doing or saying anything wrong. Speaking from personal experience, bear in mind that if you miscalculate with the object of your desire/fantasy/lust, you may lose that person altogether. To quote the movie’s quote, “Is it better to speak or to die?” At some point, a decision has to be made.
    This movie makes it all a stately dance or chess game or any other circling round activity to start with. Showing off, or bragging about current or past successes (much as I am doing here LOL), discussing adult topics in a totally natural way, Elio finally initiates an up-front conversation on the subject, but still in a very roundabout way. Oliver, I have assumed, has had enough experience to pick up on the cues from this younger man and is also careful to check if his assumptions are accurate. And so the game is played. The juvenile water splashing, Oliver protesting in a friendly way that Elio was making it very difficult for him, some “mature” conversation, followed by Oliver taking the risk of touching Elio’s face, as he does with the statue from the lake - a very very intimate intrusion for all but your dentist and beauty therapist. After that, the game becomes a tennis match and they are soon clear about the rules of the game. They are each “possible” and now the courtship can progress.
    Glib maybe, but I feel this is one explanation for the sedate pace of the opening which I simply adore. It is a game you can’t afford to rush, or you may lose totally. It turns out they both won, and they both lost. Kismet.
    Oscars are tomorrow New Zealand time. Fingers and everything else crossed.

    LOL. Brace positions please. Here are some more pearls of pseudo-wisdom, then it is off to bed to "dream a little dream, Armie."
    I love Armie Hammer’s expressions in the scene where they are lying side by side after the film title is spoken, the shirt has been thrown on the floor and we see the lake/river - not quite sure why the latter is shown at this point. His face conveys so much information - a fantastic example of non-verbal communication. I take it to reveal among other things, the question “What the hell have I got myself into here?” What should just be a summer fling; a no-strings-attached dalliance which will have no consequences, has become something different. If he is thinking of his prospective fiancée at this point, and how he is suddenly being emotionally unfaithful, I wouldn’t be surprised. Bisexual men I have known (both in the biblical and the social sense) have usually compartmentalised their lives so that emotional investment is with their partner, while additional sexual gratification, in this case with a young man, is just about physiological relief and a hint of male bonding. I know this is true of myself in the parallel circumstances - justifying infidelity. While mine is part of an arrangement we have had for many years, Oliver is presumably just having a “safe” temporary affair while off the lead in Italy. He is only 24 after all and not at all settled into a staid existence. Now, he finds himself unexpectedly concerned and involved emotionally. He thinks about the consequences to Elio as well as himself of what should have been just a sexual game. As he indicates post swim, and mentions in the bookstore scene soon after, he feels guilty that maybe he has pressured Elio into being a one night stand, perhaps making him do something he didn’t want to do, or will now regret. While there is no definitive physiological loss of virginity with a guy, I think it is possible to assume this is Elio’s first time with a man, if only because of his inexperienced approach. I have no evidence for this, and it may be resolved for me when I read the book, which is on its way from England as I write. Timothée in one interview describes the lead up to their consummation along the lines of “He is so eager, but he doesn’t know how to go about it”. When he is first with Marzia, his reaction is one of unexpected pleasure. “Fuck, that felt good” if the subtitles are to be believed. During that episode, he certainly doesn’t sound experienced with females either, especially as Marcia asks if he is with her only because Chiara is with Oliver. That doesn’t suggest much of a pre-existing affair. Again, the book may clarify that. Maybe Elio indulges in a bit of transference and visualises himself and Oliver together in a similar situation.
    So Oliver (oh so readable Armie)is trying to interpret the signs in these very changed circumstances, with the added complication that he has had a great time and would like more of Elio. “What do I do now?” “How can I make this work?” “Was it good for him too?” “Was I too insensitive to his needs?” “Was I … Did I … Should I… What if I …” Even “Fuck, that felt good”.
    Oliver can do with a significant boost of reassurance and it seems Elio is not about to provide it. When Elio sits up - “Is this rejection? Have I gone too far? Are his parents going to be told?” - Elio is now in the position of power in a dramatic sense, and is calling the shots, despite Oliver being the dominant one so recently. I feel the difference is that Elio isn’t thinking in those terms - Oliver is projecting his worries onto Elio when Elio is really so happy he could burst and he is trying to normalise the situation and appear cool, but he doesn’t know what he is now supposed to do. Both of them are in for a significant bout of “Will he hate me in the morning”.
    I particularly like how Luca Guadagnino has shown the actual sex scene i.e. that he hasn’t. We are in no doubt as to what is occurring, and we don’t need details beyond what is shown, in my view (and the director’s, obviously). The good old “came the dawn” or “Let us draw a veil over...” setup is perfect in my opinion. I don’t want a story with my porn, and I don’t want porn with my story. This part of the film embodies eroticism for me, and I’m not sure I have been able to define that previously. Nothing is shown (well ……) but everything is known. I also love the first post coital shot of their being entwined, but for less high minded reasons Armie’s legs do indeed go all the way up! Talk about peach fuzz.
    In the streets of Bergamon(?), Oliver seems to me to be younger in some ways, and Elio appears older. And for a sign of true love, I can’t overlook the last kiss. Deep kissing someone who has recently thrown up has to be a sign of true love!

      Ah, Wes Smeltzer , as they say, an agreeable person is someone who agrees with you. You are most agreeable! :)
      Sorry FilMyWatchlist - I’m at it again - hijacking your comments section.
      Having now read the book, I find I prefer the movie (21 times now, but I am slowing down a bit). This is the usual thing for me - the first version of something takes my fancy, and subsequent productions etc never match my first impression if it is something I like. I seldom find the second version outperforms the first. I prefer the movie ending - it is more emotional for me. The book ties up a few loose ends, and rounds out the story, but I don’t think it adds much. I fully agree with Luca’s decision to scrap the Roman Bookshop etc. This too was part of my history as a university student, sitting around debating art and literature, and attending pretentious “modern classical” concerts and nodding wisely during discussions of the 12 tone method of composition, and contemporary drama. The Roman scenes were accurate and atmospheric, but basically uninteresting as Oliver is seldom mentioned during this, and my attention needed to be on Oliver & Elio. The running around the country and waterfall in the movie (à la Julie Andrews on her mountain), and the drunken dancing in the streets of Bergamo continued rounding out the characters I was interested in. The 20-years-in-the-future part of the book was useful as part of the character development I suppose, but my friend Oliver didn’t shine too brightly then. Far better to leave it all up in the air - unresolved.
      I was pleased to see my assumptions and motivation analyses were reasonably on the money having read the book. A few relatively minor differences in my interpretations, but basically I was on the right track - or at least the track laid down by James Ivory.
      The debate about straight actors playing Elio and Oliver instead of gay actors, was clarified somewhat for me having read the book. They are both *bisexual*, inasmuch as they also have sex with women and seem to enjoy it. For Elio in particular, he is happy to bat for both teams at this stage of his life, which is something I as a Gay guy NEVER did. To have gay actors pretending to like women is just the reverse scenario of straight guys pretending to like men. At that point in time they were bi so casting 2 guys who could act the hell out of these roles was the right decision, regardless of their actual orientation.

    I don't know if I 'm right, but I think there's also a symbolism about the bikes. (Sorry for my engligh) At first on the street when they're using their bikes, Oliver's bike is always behind Elios's bike , because he is following him and trying to give him signs that he likes him. After, their bikes are always closer and go next to each other. After Elio feels rejected for the first time, his bike is behind Oliver's.

      I will say, the movie is actually better the 2nd time around. The lack of plotline is almost distracting in a way... you are waiting for "it" to happen or for a car crash or someone to die. In stead Luca takes you back to a simpler time.. before smart phones and ipads.. where people talked to each other and rode bikes into town, and swam in the river and spent as much time outdoors.... and allowed themselves to fall in love. The cinematography is breath taking.

    • @maxie2go
      @maxie2go 6 лет назад

      Hi CMBYNers, camtheartist your words belie your name. An artist doesn't need a reason to perform well and/or to convey true meaning. However, this film is like a tropical depression way out in the Atlantic that builds over a month and one day you are told to evacuate Hurricane CMBYN is coming ashore with cat 5 winds. Life doesn't always need a reason to happen, nor does it need perfection FilMyWatchList. The .05 you left off tells us more about you than the film. So that you must consider your life perfect. :) With perfection there is no need for God. So we all have blemishes but that doesn't mean we aren't perfect. - camtheartist, this film is about love. Are you saying you need a reason to find, see, or feel love? It is something that is plotless. It just happens. So too, does this film... it just evolves. - Luca narrated a piece (and it is a video I have been searching for since I saw it.) about the symbols in the movie? he talks about from Oliver's apricot shorts while lying on the green towel, to the fact that the ever present apricot juice on the table is no longer there, the morning after Elio and Oliver consummate their love. Don't look for a reason to like the movie, just watch it and breathe. Don't site there with a clinched fist, or thinking gay men, of pedophilia none of that. Just think about when you fell in love. :) And if you lost that love then you can surely empathize with Elio. However, if you still have that love then you can surely sympathize with that pain he has to be in sitting before that fireplace. Do you mind that I'm getting married? What! Is that reason enough camtheartist? :) Breathe Atalanta, breathe. --Lllater

    I think this is the most beautiful film I have ever seen; in all the ways that someone might quantify that. Talking in terms of symbolism, one of the things that captured me (and may be coincidence and not at all planned by Luca) is that all the closeups of Elio, early in the film, at least, are in profile (a nice French/Roman profile) and this leads to Oliver tracing the nose and lips of the statue brought up from the lake which then leads to him tracing the nose and lips of Elio just before the kiss. All of this may be just out of my head but it seems deliberate on some level (the profile closeup continues through the film). One final thought that has occurred to me. Timothée is a good looking young man. But I don't know if it is makeup or lighting or camera work or the tone of the film or just Timothée's ability to so accurately portray human emotion so accurately but he is absolutely beautiful throughout this film.

    Some Thoughts on the movie: Call Me By Your Name
    I’m glad that at 62 that I can still dream and hope. Yes, those can be two very different things.
    I decided to take a break from work this afternoon and go ahead to see the movie: Call Me By Your Name tailored from the book written by Andre Aciman. I’ve been reading the book while on the treadmill at the gym. Today, I broke one of my rules about not seeing a movie until I finish reading the book if it’s indeed a movie inspirited by one. I wish I’d suck to that rule. I’m not even sure if I can pick the book back up, at least not anytime soon, to finish it. I certainly know that movies don’t always follow the book to the letter … in fact, I’ve seen movies that were supposedly adapted from a book or two and later found myself walking out of the theater thinking, “That movie certainly isn’t even closely related to a book I’d read.”
    It was unquestionably a beautifully executed film, and being shot in the countryside of Lombard, Italy certainly added to the charm of the movie, as did the 17th Century villa where a good part of it took place. It makes me want to return one day and I’ve already been there twice in my life.
    Understanding that I haven’t finished the book, Aiman may have ended the story a bit differently than the movie’s director, Luca Guadagnino. I would only hope so, but I’m kind of doubting it. I should add, that I thought the acting was exceptional. With all that stated, I really didn’t need to walk out of the theater with my heart broken. Guadagnino had a choice as to whether to break hearts at the end or leave a bit of hope that the love between the main characters, Oliver and Elio, would have a future, but he chose to break our hearts as if there's not enough of that in the world.
    And, when you whittled things down a bit … I don’t know what the laws are in Italy, but in many states in America, Oliver would have been labeled a child molester understand he was well over 21 and Elio was 17. What I took from the movie by the acting and the sequence of events … Oliver knew from the first move, regardless of Elio’s desires for him, that he would end up breaking a boy’s heart. And, that’s exactly what his character did. Yeah, I thought it sucked. And, furthermore ... as I put more thought into the characters, Oliver was perhaps a bit narcissistic ... especially in the next to the last scene, when during a phone conversation he tells Elio he is engaged and asks ... rather states, in my option: "You don't mind that I am ... do you (... or something like that)." Well, of course, the boy mined ... he'd just told Oliver how much he missed him. So, basically, he just used the boy to get his "rocks off" and then threw him away. He just happened to have a good "pickup line."
    You know ... I think I won't pick up the book again and hope that it ends differently or at least not so sucky.

    Wonderful review/analysis of this movie. Just truly wished that I could've loved it. The younger guy I got. LOVED him. Only the older guy...he just seemed too cocky/arrogant. I never saw him as being vulnerable or...whatever word I'm looking for to make the younger person fall in love with him. I NEVER saw their connection or got their chemistry. I mean, the older guy is very handsome, but I would've needed something MORE than his looks. Like how the younger guy is really into his music (I'm going to say that he is a budding composer), I think it would've been SENSATIONAL if the older guy would've been into music too. Maybe not so much into composing, but MAYBE he would've played piano too and together somehow they could've connected/bonded over that and their love/romance could've blossomed over that? I guess I'm missing the connection between these two characters. And I'm really sorry I couldn't see it. : (

      10. read the book about 7 years or so ago when i was in college for my science communication class. in the book the story went on for 20 years. couple of years later for an odd coincidence, i met the writer, Aciman, cool old man. the film left me empty and it was too sterilized, poor cinematography and editing - maybe i am comparing the flick to the novel. Luca seems a good director but this is the first time i've seen one of his works. i dig your review. cheers.

    I am so involved with this movie that to show it to someone who makes remarks like "He's (Elio) so skinny" feels like I'm "casting pearls before swine." I don't know if I can share it with my own boyfriend of over 30 years when the Blu-ray arrives on March 13 (2018) because of his unromantic attitude. He is very sexual, but not romantic. Obviously, we had very different coming-of-age experiences. I grew up in a small town in the South, he grew up in a New York Puerto Rican environment. By the way, the "so skinny" remark was made by a 68 year old woman who has not had sex with her husband in 30 years! She only watches violent movies and some film noir - no romance, not even "Moonstruck."

    I find the first half of his review very wrong. In the book, Oliver is never unwelcome. The instant Elios meets him he is lusting over him. I believe hat is pretty clear in the movie

    • @FilMyWatchlist
      @FilMyWatchlist  6 лет назад +1

      Rose_Inga Hi! Yeah he was definitely lusting over him but he puts on the facade of being annoyed by Oliver to hide his true feelings ( the "later" comments ) I don't think we're supposed to know, in the film at least, that he likes Oliver straight away.

    • @livf891
      @livf891 6 лет назад +1

      FilMyWatchlist I see your point. Maybe the director decided to diverge a bit from the book. He does put on a facade in both definitely but maybe because I read the book first his feelings were more obvious to me

    I loved this movie. It was interesting how Oliver never really did much in the way of academic work with Dr Perlman. It was hard to understand why he was really there. I originally thought the choice of Stuhlbarg for Elio's father was a poor one, mainly because Stuhlbarg with that beard looked like a short round Robin Williams, but I realize now that the choices for Elio's parents were made so that they would not get in the way of the main stars. In many ways, Elio's mother is completely forgettable and could have been played by anyone. And that is the point. This is a movie about Elio and Oliver.

    • @FilMyWatchlist
      @FilMyWatchlist  6 лет назад

      Totally got the same vibe with Stuhlbarg at first, he seemed to be overselling it a bit and reminded me of Williams in Good Will Hunting but by the time he has the heart to heart with Elio in the final act I was really endeared with his portrayal. Yeah the academic work fell by the wayside for sure, or it was only shown when the subjects furthered the themes of the film such as the slides of muscular male statues.
      I liked Elio's mother in the film but agree she wasn't afforded much screen time. Loved the moment in the car when she collected Elio from the train station though.
      Thanks for watching!

    I love how you say this premise has been done to death/is generic, and maybe that's true for straight protagonists, but can you count on your hand several mainstream LGBT films that are just a pure romance? With no pain and suffering or dying of aids or tortured coming outs etc? This coming of age might be generic for a man and woman pairing, but for a LGBT film it's revolutionary and should be treated as such.

    Besides the meticulously crafted narratives in the movie ,your own narrative is utterly sensational:)

    There were two characters that led a homosexual lifestyle, arrived for a visit in the middle of the film, the academics called Sonny and Cher.
    ...but should you refer to Oliver's and Elio's homosexual lifestyle? Really? They were two dudes that like women but admit they are drawn to each other, so that isn't exactly a homosexual lifestyle is it?

      Johnniee Larue you're right, lifestyle didn't seem right to me when I watched it back too because it was more of an affair than a part of their everydaily lives. Homosexual tendencies maybe? Cheers for the feedback.
