At heart a custard and a mayo are really similar and the iconic fish condiment is mayo based tartar sauce , so I expected something really tasty to appear.

Half the UK just had a quiet, polite Brit-gasm over this episode. However, you do need the right brands of both fish fingers and custard. Having already tried this with several different brands, the difference is massive.

The 'typical' Brit brands would be Birdseye fish fingers and Birds custard, but really it's about finding brands you personally prefer and combining them. I'd suggest staying away from the cheap stuff, either way.

My mum craved this for the entirety of her pregnancy with my little sister. She always got sad when she saw other people's reactions to it, sooo I ate it a few times to make her feel better. Combination ALWAYS made me throw up. Now we know i'm allergic to fish:-) Poor mum.

I’ve made fish fingers/fish sticks like this, and my family absolutely loved it. I made a normal tartar sauce instead of the “savory crème anglaise”, but still it was delicious. The batter skin was so crisp that even I was surprised.
There should be a sequel to this. In a later episode (The Power of Three, I believe) the Doctor says that fish fingers and custard inspired him to invent Yorkshire pudding.

I might add for extra authenticity, when you buy frozen fish fingers over here in the UK, they are breaded i believe and unless you eat them in a sandwich, they will just fall apart on your fork or in your fingers

I was still in school when this episode aired and on fridays the school served fish fingers and you could also get custard with desert so me and some friends actually tried fish fingers and custard and we quite liked it

Fun fact: Matt Smith never actually ate that on set. The fish fingers were replaced with cookies (or biscuits in this case, I guess?) because you can't have easy spoiling food like fish on a tv-set :D
I might add for extra authenticity, when you buy frozen fish fingers over here in the UK, they are breaded i believe and unless you eat them in a sandwich, they will just fall apart on your fork or in your fingers
They're breaded in Australia here too but what are you doing stabbing them with the force of a thousand newtons? Need to get that breading looked at if they fall apart.

I did this for a catering event! Panko breaded tilapia, seasoned lightly with s&p, smoked paprika, and a little Chili powder, with a thick vanilla creme anglaise. I keep getting requests for it 😆

I did my take on Fish Fingers and Custard a few years back. I did Salt and Vinegar Potato Chip Crusted Fish Fingers with a Malt Vinegar Aoili as my "custard."
It was fantastic.
