  • There aren't many things you do in life without having some form of regret. If we are honest with ourselves we can feel regretful about many situations in our lives. I love living in Thailand but in this video I highlight so regrets that I have about moving here.

I'm totally pissed off with myself. I supposed to spend the whole winter in Thailand and quit after three days because I've got a chronic insomnia problem. If you want to jeer at that it's okay! I didn't know about these kinds of problems until I had one. You don't know how you're going to be until it happens. I was awake - seriously, totally awake - for five weeks in 2018. I thought I'd fixed it, and found it (at some expense) that I hadn't. To reiterate, you've no idea what Thailand, Panama or Brazil will be like until you try it. People kill themselves in foreign countries through a combination of depression, culture shock, boredom, marital problems, alienation, whatever. Life can blindside you.

Thank you for your honesty. I deployed with the USAF to Thailand and I've always wanted to live there. I'm 56 now, thinking of retiring but the VISA issue is a huge red flag for me. What if they refuse to renew my Visa? Then what? I understand the Thai's perspective but it's a huge risk to take for retirees.

I moved to Thailand in 2000 and went back to America in 2013 for family reasons, ended up working there and retiring in 2019 from LA after buying a condo in the Midwest. The cost of living in southern Missouri is almost as cheap as in Thailand. Now I feel like I am living in both countries. Also now with the 75 day visits (45 day + 30 day extension) its no issue to live in both. A Thai Ronald with his hands in the thai greeting pose, ha ha ha! To be honest the humidity in Thailand now that I am 65 is real torturous then when I was living here in my younger self. Oh and you forgot the 3 month immigration office visits on your retirement visa along with paying for entrees if you visit other countries.

Good video, mate. You are right, the visa situation is strict now which probably annoys some foreigners. However, and branching off a little bit, there are some situations where the rules are for foreigners. One rule is, if you are in a relationship with a Thai and you split up, then the court will only give parental responsibility to the parent who they think is in a position to provide a better upbringing/life to the child, regardless of the sex of the parent. I know this because it happened to me. It's very different in most western countries.

Your comments on Citizenship are spot on... for the last 2.5 years through Covid I have revieved all the options for a Canadian, of retirement age, to live in the wonderful climate of Thailand and in my opinion, the only reasonable option for me would be an Elite Visa at a cost for 5 years of $20,000 US... while it seems high, when all things are considered its not a bad option for those of retirement age and the funds to make retaining a Visa easy. More countries need to review their Citizenship requirements and imigration options which sometimes place unfortunate burdens on those already living in the host country and in general the costs in those countries. There is no easy solutions... exceptions like marriage, children and skills need to be considered when citizenship is granted... The most troubling thing for me is the constant change in the "Rules" in Thailand... so depositing large sums of money in Thailand to retain citizenship is a non starter... every country has it's issues.. Thailand is comming of age in a "World Economy", and the only constent in Thailands near future will be that CHANGE... Canada for example has an overly generous imigration policy ... "Ontario" brings in over 300,000 imigrants and their FAMILIES each year... the creation of facilities for electricity, transportation, water, waste removal and on and on is not keeping pace with these imigration quota's... so something is going to break... many Canadians of retirement age are leaving Canada for countries where the climate and costs of living a simpler life are very attractive. Costs in Canada are going up way to fast. Change in Canada is a very very slow process so a country like Thailand's changing rules atleast trys to adjust as the world changes... imigration to Thailand is a "Facilities" offered versus "Cost", of things like Clean Water, Electricity, Transporation, Health Care and on and on... it is almost a "spreadsheet" and "Way of Life Balancing" act... there are a lot of good things about living in Thailand and for someone people a lot of unknowns... its understanding those unknowns that is difficult...and what I'm trying to understand...Ted

With the Elite single person visa, it's currently 600,000baht for 5years duration of stay or 1,000000baht for 20years.
Also if opting for the 5yrs Elite, you can upgrade to the further 15yrs for the extra 400,000baht, at the end of your initial 5yrs.
It makes it much more worthy, though it requires total commitment as there's no refund if one decides to leave at any point.

I know what you mean Ted. The Elite visa is a good option for much less hassle in that you know its fixed for the duration, its just quite a chunk of money for the 5yr only option.
If you decide on it, go through an agent who doesn't charge you any extra than the 600,000baht all inclusive. All agents get a decent kickback from Elite with each client and so a good agent won't charge you any more. I know such an agent if you need. All the very best.

Yup...thats the only thing holding me back from actually taking the leap to retire in Thailand, I have the financial means but that dark cloud hanging over your head of "if"...there are alot of if"s in Thailand.. property ownership, visa requirements or rather visa difficulties are a huge red flag to any potential retiree. I'm actually reconsidering the whole thing and deciding to stay in Europe and popping over for 3 month stints when I feel like I need it. Safer...it will NEVER be home...Home is security and peace of mind. Thailand does not offer this

There are many legal gaps that make obtaining citizenship difficult, such as the large number of illegal Chinese in Thailand. If it is easy for foreigners to obtain citizenship, their crimes will increase. Thailand is quite cautious of itself . Sorry if you were affected.

The Thailand vs Philippines debate seems to go to the Ph because Th is making in harder to get a visa. But the Ph has an onerous new SIM card law that requires a plane ticket out shown every 30 days among other things. Seems like the answer to - How do we discourage expats without saying we want to discourage expats?

Try thinking of the annual Thai O visa process as a job creation scheme which provides sustainable employment for literally thousands, and therefore security and wellbeing for those families in your newly adopted country. Every trip to Thai Immigration, every knock back and return visit, every photocopy, every pen exhausted of it's ink, every meal consumed while awaiting your interview, it's all income generation, distribution and taxation related. Our annual trauma is but a speck in the ocean compared to the benefit it provides our host nation. Did I sell that idea?
