- My son was born in Bangkok six years ago to a Thai mother. He is a Thai citizen and holds a Thai Passport. But whenI picked him up from school today he told me that the Thai kids in his international school are referring to him as "Farang". In this video I let you know how this affects our lives in Thailand.

As a Thai person, The term 'Farang' is used to describe people with Caucasian features. This word was originally borrowed from Persian traders about 600 years ago. Similarly, the term 'K̄hæk' was used to refer to Indian people but later came to describe people from Persia and Arab countries as well, such as 'K̄hæk Persia' and 'K̄hæk Arab'. Chinese people are called 'Cīn', and Japanese people are called 'Ỵī̀pùn'. Whether these terms are considered racist in your point of view but in Thai language it depend on the tone and intention of the speaker. For instance, 'Thai' can be used in a derogatory way if spoken with a harsh tone or accompanied by adjectives like 'Ai Thai'. I respect your perspective on this matter and hope your kid grow in happy Thailand.
P.S. If you want your child to have a way to handle bullying at school, they can use the name of the other child's parent or make reference to the parent in a derogatory manner. This method can be quite effective in Thai schools.

If you don't like the word, that's okay. It's your choice. But please don't say the word 'Farang' or ฝรั่ง is racist because it is not. It's just a word, and words can't be racist. It's the people using them that can be. Case by case, I guess. And if anyone asks me, the word is usually meant in a good way.
And from your video, many ลูกฝรั่ง (literally meaning a child of a foreigner / a mixed-race child) here don't even speak Thai. People asking you that question didn't mean any harm or want to be racist; they just thought your child is cute. And when the security guy called your child ลูกฝรั่ง, that's not even an insult. It's how they're describing a person, it's how they communicate, and every Thai person hearing this will know 'immediately' who to look for, it's for your own good.
I'll say right here again that this word 'Farang' doesn't mean any harm or is a racist word.

Thai family here call our Daughter farang noi. Its not a derogatory term at all. Any Thai will tell you the same. When i first came to Thailand I assumed being called farang was a bad thing and got a little annoyed by it until I learnt that its not the case at all. Its actually more of a positive term than a negative one.

basicly farang noi is small(little) white girl, and we said it in a good way and just word farang is not a negative way it depend on the action and tone of the person said.
in Thai any word can be in negative way just because on tone of the voice, i know thai language can be difficult but please try to learn it with open mind also Thai people are mostly friendly and fun joking around too

My thai gf says the word farrang is not racist but sounds like the kids were bullying. Thai kids will bully each other about any physical differences according to her.

Imagine you are working in a hotel or any public spaces and you have to tell your people to look at a boy with yellow skin, slanted eyes and black hair. Would you say hey look at that "his nationality" boy? Or just call him an "Asian boy" ?

I think you misunderstanding about word "Farang"
by definition for thai people, "Farang" is not a bad word. we just use this word for call this man/lady are Westerners, or European people.
and we don't use it's for racist by default.... ( and in our view "oriental" or "asian" is not a bad word by itself too )
But in terms of kids bully
that thai kids just use it to call your son "Farang" , because your son is half Westerners and thai
and to repeat the word "Farang" so many time as they want and see that your son uncomfortable or annoying is the core of it

They can just use dad's/mom's name to bully (if they knows)
by repeat calling dad's/mom's name for all day long

Exactly .His son is what the Thais properly call a Luk Khrueng .A half Thai half Westener .There are loads of them in Thai TV Soaps and they are looked up to .

They're reducing a human to a simple label indicating non-belonging. You shouldn't even translate it. People make the mistake of trying to translate everything.
But as soon as you translate you get a western connotation which wasn't there to start with.
You shouldn't translate Thai. You have to read and hear it as Thai and understand it directly without translating.
That's a huge and typical problem for those who don't know Thai or whose Thai is not good enough.
Some words can be translated without creating a problem. But not all words can be translated. So the sooner you stop translating the better, because it distorts meaning.
I have seen mistakes on the use of words in good language books, just because they try to keep it simple enough, not to confuse the learner too much.
I've seen absurd comparisons of the word farang with words in English, absolute nonsense and bollocks. Just because they wanted to compare it to a western word or idea at all costs, no matter what.
Maybe, just maybe, westerners should try to believe a Thai about their own language. Telling them how they should speak their language is extremely patronizing, condescendant, colonial, etc... especially given those preaching them can't speak read or write it themselves.

Problem is : first of all, it ISN'T a bad word, so nothing to redefine.
But... because he is convinced it is a bad word, he is redefining it as bad to his son.
So he created damage.
On top of that he spreads the fake news that Thais are constantly insulting and being racist using an innocent word. So he falsely c4eates and spreads a stereotype of racist and derogatory people.
Some farang then react aggressively to the word farang, thus confusing Thai and creating an image of farang as idiotic, erratic and impolite.
This is not an innocent disagreement in meaning of a word. This is stirring up unnecessary prejudice and bigotry.
Context is key.
Farang is used by some Thai people as an everyday, normal, non derogatory term.
But some Thai people do use it as a derogatory term. And if said to someone who is not a farang ( eg half Thai) it can 100% be meant as a derogatory term.

Falang or Farang means "white man from the West". Khon tang chat is the same as Farang but they say Farang if the immigrant/expat is white and from Europe/USA. If the farang is black then they say Farang dam.
Farang is not a racist word and is not a negative word. What is 100% right from this video is that your son is not 100% thai (mom Thai/dad farang) and that is why they call him farang. He is mixed (Luk khreung) and when someone is not looking 100% Thai then in the Thai's society you're not "Thai".

Cute kid, and already fluent in two languages. What kids call other kids on social media in the U.S. is far worse than any adults would say to someone. This was going to happen eventually, it's life.
Bottom line is kids are mean to each other. That is universal all across the world. And I still contend, coming from a Thai person, farang is not racist, it is just an IDENTIFIER (and neutral term). And Identifier in itself is not racist, just a description. Thai people don't call a farang a farang out of malice, it is just a descriptor. Just like in english we call a white guy a white guy, a black guy a black guy, an American an American, nothing wrong with that. Now if your kid is half white and thai, well I grew up knowing quit a number of those, and we never called 'em farang. They were just fellow peers, and we didn't discriminate them out. If you grew up in Thailand and spoke the language, you were Thai, simple as that. Westerners coming to Thailand being offended being called farang should get over it. It's like being offended for a white guy being called a white guy. The term farang in Thai carries no negative connotation. I understand your pain on the issue. I have lived and/or travelled to Thailand for almost 25 years. I also lived many years in South Korea (overlapping much of the same time). Koreans call foreigners weigook-saram or waygookin. It means other country person. It is 10 times worse than being called a farang. It is used to highlight that the foreigner has done something wrong or not within cultural boundaries or simply to just say that this person is different than us. In addition, they used to have a particularly nasty word for children of mixed Korean/foreigners called Children of the Dust. It supposedly is better nowadays, but it was all meant to be hurtful. I understand it is personal to you, and issues involving our kids is particularly painful. Your boy should indeed let his classmates know that he is not a farang. He shouldn't be made to put up with that. It can be hurtful. Best of luck on the issue.

"Farang" is a generic word describing white person. It's not a racist word FYI. We, Thais, commonly use this word. Don't be overthinking. It's just like when you call us "asian" without specifying the nationality.
However, "Farang Khee Nok" is a different story. This means a type of guava. This is said in a mocking way.

Same in Cambodia. My son is called barang kon by the villagers. But I don't agree that Asians in western countries can fully integrate. I had a friend whose family migrated from China in the 1800s and people would still tell her to go back to China. I hope my son will see being of mixed race as an advantage having the best of both worlds and being able to live and work in an affluent western country when he chooses while still maintaining his khmer family ties and the right to buy property here if he wants. He'll never be a simple village kid but I don't see that as a problem.

Even in the USA, Chinese immigrants call Americans "laowai" which is utterly insane to me. Old video so I know you might not see it but there is no fixing some people's mentality.
I guess for me being a tourist in Thailand the word farang never bothered me, It must be a different situation when your son is treated like that, just proves how xenophobic Thailand can be. Also I think the term farang really depends on the context of the situation.
He is talking about children and children learning. In adults I found 99% of the time the word farang is just used as convenience of conversation. Then perhaps 1% get offended or actually do not like farang which is just life and you choose how much time you waste on the 1%
It is same thing in Japan too. They see that there are Japanese peoples and then there are rest of the world. You can't never be Japanese no matter how long you live in there. They don't want to be rude, but that is how they see.
Maybe you can teach your son that he is international or he has two home country and he can be proud of that.

I don't think Farang is racist it's descriptive. My friend is married to a Bhutanese. When he goes to Bhutan he's referred Chillum (sic). It just means white guy. Sorry if your son feels bad. As we know kids can be cruel without meaning to.

The term comes from French people visiting Siam in the nineteenth century introducing themselves as français. When Thais discussed the foreigners and tried to pronounce français, farang is what the Thais settled on in terms of pronunciation.
Now it means roughly any white foreigner and is not considered derogatory.

I can not say the term I most often hear as it is quite racist. As you well know if you are really Thai, there still exists bad racism in the country and you only need to look at how much whitening cream is sold each year to see this.
They always call me B. No one has ever addressed me as Farang. I do hear it occasionally when the hens are squawking. They also call asparagus bamboo farang.

They would call your son "hapa haole". He would get more respect than a (full) haole, and get beat up less in school. I agree, it is a form of race based discrimination.

So, basically Farang is originated from The word French (when pronounced with the actual French accent so It'd be something like Frongz[idk how to phonetic]) and it's getting changed to Farang over the period of time.
Think about Thai peasants hundred years ago when the education barely reaches people. Some Think Farang is from the word Guava because Western ppl's skin is white like a guava's flesh.
They called every Caucasian "Farang"
Same as Arabian/Indian "Aa Bang/Khaek" (This one feels more racist)
And Chinese "Jek" (This one was okay in the past, but it's now being used in casual racism)

It's How Thai separate races vaguely.

In Philippines they just say "foreigner" and it gets me upset alot also. I also have a mixed race child, grown now but the Philippines will always treat her differently. Alot of folks commenting about if the word is racist or not, it dont matter the word its the fact they treat your differently and wont ever allow you to fully assimilate. My perception of the word 'Farang' as a Thai means 'Caucasian'-no more, no less-just about appearance as a white person. Most Thais can't distinguish if someone is American, European, Australian, or otherwise, so 'Farang' just means white individuals who look different from us. We've been using the word for a very long time without being aware that it could offend someone. In most cases, I don't think there's an intention to insult or be racist. However, I can't deny that on some occasions people use this term for stereotyping and insults.
Your feeling of being offended is valid and understandable. Put myself in your shoes, If I were in another country and people kept calling me a SEA guy or Asian guy, I'd probably feel the same.
Also, most Thais are not exposed to the Western way of thinking, where this could be seen as disrespectful, probably because we don't have the same concept of racism (maybe, lol). So please don't take it too seriously. Just don't mind them.
I'd also say Thai people should learn and be more careful when using the word 'Farang' now that we are aware of the potential to insult someone. I stopped calling someone 'Farang' to their face a long time ago because I'm aware of this issue. People can learn.

"Farang" is also used by language experts. I even have seen David Smyth using it, who wrote books about Thai language and has been teaching at the reknown SOAS university in London.

I also have a six year old son who has told me about the insults he has recieved. There are many things we can learn from the Thais but it is an openly racist society.

We would call them by their name. In the UK we have Asian (mostly Indian or Pakistani) families who have lived in the UK for generations. They consider the UK their home, so it's impolite to call them a foreigner or outsider.

Luk farang means the child of the foreigner. The security guard wasn’t referring to your child as farang he was referring to you. You’ve been here long enough to have heard the expression, Mai chai khon Thai roi percent. That’s also used to refer to other Thais, nothing to do with farang. If you took the time to learn the language and integrate you would know these things.
