  • Diamond P announcer Steve Evans might have best summed up Frank Hawley's career when he proclaimed, "Frank Hawley, is arguably drag racing's greatest rags to riches story."
An aspiring drag racer, Hawley, applied by mail and was hired by veteran team owner Austin Coil. Coil was tough on his youthful driver but very insightful, and the lessons learned crafted the Canadian-based competitor into not only a champion, but also one of drag racing's more talented instructors.
In this episode of Legends: The Series, Hawley laughingly describes the Coil tutelage, his childhood of exploration and his desire to do what it took to earn a top driving gig. Hawley also discusses his fateful appointment to drive for a paralyzed Darrell Gwynn, as well as developing his popular driving school.
Hawley talks about his career and how it would have been worthy of a Hollywood script.

One of the truly good, good men in our sport. Honorable, humble, well-spoken, intelligent, and a damn good driver/teacher. Drag racing is better for him being a part of its history.

Chi-town Hustler did the best burnout I've ever seen back in the day at Byron. Initial Burnout went so far that by the time he slowed it down, he was past the finish line. Then he turned around and did another long burnout going back towards the starting line. After they turned it around again by the starting line, they had to add more fuel so he could make the pass. Just amazing !!!

I have known Frank for many years, and getting to be around him and speak with him completely is quite a humbling experience.he's the most patient and knowledgeable person I've known in the sport, and always takes time to stop and speak with me and shake my hand, a true gentleman beyond words.

Frank Hawley has been better for dragracing then dragracing has been for him .. This is a guy represents sport perfectly . I'm glad to see them finally getting credit for who he is and what he is ... Think of it this way how many drivers will not be there today if not for him .

I have not been more motivated to attend Frank Hawleys school of drag racing than I am right now. Being able to see how he came up the ranks to be one of the pioneers of the sport is very motivating to me.
And knowing how many professional drivers first started there careers with him is more of an inspiration than anything. Just knowing that he and his school put out quality drivers that have gone on to win championships is something that gives me alot of respect for his school and the product of drivers that come out of his school.. But just goes to show that if you have a great teacher and the will and motivation you can become greatness.. Let just hope that I can be another student of his school this coming April and walk down the path of greatness like so many others before me.
I truly thank everyone for making this video and giving me more motivation to make my dreams happen than any other time before this

Great videos that you all post and thank you for sharing them to us.
Do you think it would be possible to have a tribute video for Steve Evans and/or a tribute video Steve and Dave Mcclelland? Maybe having former and current drivers as well as other former and current NHRA people tell stories about Steve/Steve and Dave?
Thank you for your time and keep up the great work that you all do!!!
