In a career spanning five decades, Dale Pulde drove more than 70 different nitro Funny Cars in NHRA and IHRA tour events, in match races and in the Hot Rod Heritage Series. Considered by many one of the greatest natural driving talents in history, he also was a capable tuner whose cars were known for their reliability and good looks as well as their performance.
In this episode of Legends, the Series, season four, Pulde talks about lessons learned from the late Mickey Thompson, about the death of close friend and mentor Joe Pisano on the day Pulde was to begin driving for him, on “valley fever,” the disease that almost killed him, and on his legacy.
Perhaps the best gauge of Pulde’s success in the old IHRA series is not that he won a record 20 races and three championships (1977, 1982 and 1985) but that he won them against Raymond Beadle, Kenny Bernstein, Mark Oswald, Billy Meyer and Ed McCulloch.
On the NHRA side, he went to the final round of the 1972 Winternationals at the tender age of 21 driving the Steve Montrelli-tuned, 429 Shotgun-powered M/T Ford Pinto, won his first national event in 1978 at Gainesville and won his last at Dallas in 1996 while subbing in the “Smokin’ Joe’s” Ford Mustang for an injured Whit Bazemore.
Most of all, though, Pulde is associated with the “War Eagle” name he and partner Mike Hamby applied to the series of Pontiac, Buick and Dodge Funny Cars they campaigned in the 1970s and 1980s.
So, sit back, buckle up and enjoy a ride that began in quarter midgets and ended in the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.

I have always liked Dale. I met him one evening at Orange County and he gave me one of the posters of the car, the one that appears see thru. I had it mounted and I have it to this day. After watching this interview, I find him to be a wonderful person. Bobby seems to be able to catch who these people really are, and it pours right out of them. This is one of the best in the series. Very nice.

The one thing I remember about Dale Pulde was his starting line reflexes. He embodied the term, "You snooze,You lose". Dale and Big Daddy could "tree you" like nobody's business. You can't make a post about Dale Pulde without saying, "DAMN, those War Eagle funny cars were drop dead gorgeous. Thank you Legends !

Dale had some pretty race cars. The sumerset was the best looking. I loved that color. I remember when he was driving for mickey they were sponserd by Peter Paul candies. After they ran they would throw little candy bars from the truck. Great guy.

Dale has always struck me as a guy who belongs right where he is in life. Recruited from the list of talented available drivers or partners with Mike Hamby in their own deal he is the quintessential SOCAL hot shoe. Destined to do just exactly what he has done. I hope he has done well financially in the sport because nobody deserves it more.

One photo but no mention of when he got the call from my friend Whit Bazemore to drive the smokin Joe's mustang in 96 after Whit's motorcycle accident. I crewed on that car and although my riding buddy was hurt , to see the joy of victory in Dallas on the faces of Rob , Brian, Lew, Chris, Dickie, Mike and Kurt was great ! THANKS DALE 😄😄

This series of interviews is just so great and informative. It's awesome fun to look back sometimes. I'm especially impressed by the confidence and humility that comes through in Dale's tone of voice. Could listen all day and believe every word he says. Never lose sight of what's really important.

Yes, I would have to say, Dale was a real threat as a hired hit man driver... Those are the kinda drivers you needed to fear the most... Simply because, they could drive just about anyone’s car and put you on the trailer before nightfall...👍🏾

I met Dale several times. The last time at Fomoso in the nostalgia TF pits. We were helping the Rick McGee team that year. Dale had just finished testing several of the Schumacher cars before the March Meet and had good luck testing the cars. He was there with his beautiful blonde girl Valerie and we talked for a bit. I always had much respect for him! He did it right!

Self made man, Back when talent and drive could make a great life driving a FUEL FUNNYCAR! for a living. Now you have to be a billionaire or have a RICH$$$ DADDY or Sell your soul to corporate America. Give me the old days. Drivers and cars had personality along with diversity......and ran a 1/4 mile.
