Seeing Power burst out into laughter after Kobeni talks about her tragic past made me realize that this wasn't gonna be a show where you are supposed to "like" the characters in a conventional way. We as viewers usually stand behind the goals, morals and motivations of most shounen hero groups as they are so unambigiously right. But when it comes to Chainsaw Man, almost anyone can be awful in their own way, which isn't a detriment to this show at all. It's actually a lot more interesting when you follow the point of view of certain people you'd usually stay away from in real life. Just because they are not "likable", doesn't mean they're not intriguing and on top of that, you can still empathize with them despite their undeniable flaws.
While Kobeni can be annoying at times because of how much she screams, she quicker became one of my favorite characters in the show (I also got used to the crying and eventually thought that they were hilarious, especially in the manga, xd).
The voice acting in this episode was fantastic on all fronts, but Bryn Apprill as Kobeni was an absolute standout. She was great in those moments where her character needed to be shy, when she was heartbreakingly sad, but she was at her best when just going bonkers and screaming in fear and determination. And fun fact; she also voiced Historia in the Attack on Titan dub.
The snail is a reference to a parasite known as Leucochloridium paradoxum. Leucochloridium paradoxum is a worm that infects snails, mind controlls them to take a position that's very visible for birds and then pulsates it's eyes. The birds then have an easier time spotting the snail, they eat the snail and Leucochloridium paradoxum enters it's intended host, the bird

@@Odium16 Of course you need a reason to like or dislike a character, nothing happens without cause on a macro level. You might not know the reason, but you have one. But having a reason is not the same as requiring the character to be a good or bad person.

Then she proceeds to deny accountability and blame the guy she spent her entire screen time trying to kill. She ABSOLUTELY needs to redeem herself. And being 'pretty good at fighting' ain't gonna cut it. Ik she didnt choose to be in her situation but she's so annoying.
I will absolutely admit that I am biased on this topic as a manga reader and I get the people annoyed with Kobeni, but I completely get why she acted the way she did in this episode. We learn that Kobeni never even wanted to work as a Devil Hunter and was forced to, and now she gets in the most insane situation where even the seasoned Devil hunters don't see a way out. They're in a place they can't escape, running out of food and water, and the Infinity Devil offers them a sure way out; sacrificing the dude that Aki claimed was completely disposable and they would kill if he tried to pull anything. Again, I don't think Kobeni was right and I get why someone would be annoyed, I'm just trying to offer some perspective.
It's a massively stressful situation. Considering what we know of her personal life, even in this episode, she's in a no-win situation. And worse, this looks like one of her first missions and she's literally in a position which appears hopeless by all accounts. Is she annoying? Sure. But I also love her.
Kobeni is such a good rep of the "normal person stuck in a horrible scenario". She has no real motivation to be here like Aki or Himeno. She knows everything about how deadly this job and devils are. And she has absolutely no choice. Himeno pushes her on but it's not real emotional or mental support. Himeno has the knowledge that Aki is a good rock in all this, Power is Power, Denji couldn't care less what happens, and Arai wants to make Himeno proud. Kobeni alone feels alone in this and wants to live just to be alive, even if her situation is awful. So of course now that there's a way to get out, she clings immediately to it. Denji is a stranger and she's told is expendable, so of course she feels nothing about sacrificing him to live

MAJOR FLAW IN THE DUBBING: The devil in the story tells them to feed him the chainsaw devil not denji. It's an important plot point that will matter later.
Because power can be funny/likeable in her regular interactions I do find it interesting that the show has to keep making the point that he is still a devil and actively finds enjoyment in human suffering despite her amicability most of the time. It is amazing how quickly we can forget that so regularly after a few funny moments with her. Like she is amicable because that is the best way for her to get by in a world of humans, not because she is ‘learning’ to be nice to people. You could argue that there are hints that she is via the meowy story and other stuff, but I think this is a much slower process than people would like and I find it interesting how quickly people like to latch on to ‘good’ interactions as signs of this.
I like Solo Leveling, but the only reason it and Frieren are winning in the Patreon polls is recency bias. Plus, they're still ongoing, so by the time they manage to react to them, new episodes will likely keep them on the show. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is a crisp ten episodes of excellent animation and storytelling that they'll be able to put down for good once they finish it. They really need to stop putting it off.

Working as a Devil hunter in Public Safety pays pretty well, but there isn't any amount of money someone could give me to work that job. Unlike something like the Demon Slayers, Devils have no apparent weakness you can exploit, meaning you can't distract them enough to have a 100% successful kill method and you have to make an often terrible contract to even have a shot at survival. Not to mention the stronger Devils are genuine nightmare fuel, and everyone that does survive long enough is not exactly a normal and adjusted individual as a result. This is an universe I would *never* want to get dropped into.
I believe private Devil Hunters only go after weaker Devils. Going after the vermin of the Devils. Public Safety goes after the actually dangerous ones. Which probably means better gear and Devil Contracts than privateers, too. But yeah, no sane person would be going after some of the more dangerous Devils. And considering how easy it is for a powerful Devil to kill literally millions of people in the blink of an eye, like we see with the Gun, it is a terrible place to live.
You'd still most likely die from devils even then. In universe every 7 out of 20 people in Japan die from devils and it can be assumed that it's similar in other countries. Meaning that the leading cause of death around the world is from devils.

My vote goes to vinland. It's my favorite anime. And im very passionate about it. Would love for you guys to watch it. I think you'd guys would like it. Theres a lot of great moments in the show and would lead to good discussions.
I'm repping hard for Vinland Saga because it's genuinely a life-changhing masterpiece. Every episode had me thinking and questioning basically everything, and the journey the characters take and their arcs are unmatched.
Guys, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the shortest anime here (only ten episodes), and people have been clamoring for months for you to watch it. There's no reason you shouldn't pick the shortest option (regardless of Patreon votes) to give those shows a chance and move on to longers series later.
Forreal. Not to mention the shortest. At only ten episodes, they'd be able to get through it and move on to longer shows relatively quickly. I don't see why they keep putting it off.
My vote would go to Frieren. Not only because Kenny hasn't seen it yet either, but also because I think there are far more interesting things to talk about in it than Solo Leveling. My viewing order would be: Frieren, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Vinland Saga season 1, Solo Leveling, Vinland Saga season 2. Alternates between long and short seasons, prioritizing Cyberpunk after Frieren since it's a complete, short series.
Damn, after solo leveling frieren would be great. It’s one of my favorite shows of all time (especially the dub) but honestly, I think cyberpunk edgerunners should be after. if it was down to a vote between frieren (again, one of my favorites.) and cyberpunk edgerunners, I’d probably pick cyberpunk.
Yeah me too. Cyberpunk is way shorter and still has a lot to discuss and process. I'm interested for their thoughts on Solo Leveling because that show was just fine in my eyes. Looking forward to its second cour though. Can't wait for their reactions to Frieren and Vinland Saga. Absolutely amazing shows and I hope they will watch the Apothecary Diaries too.

Denji and power are the best 💀💀💀 they make this show even better than what it is they got so much charisma I can’t imagine this show without these two fr I love chainsaw man and a lot of it has to do with the impact those 2 cause
Im really hoping Montana's tolerance for fan service increases. I get her, i basically NEVER like it either. But its hard to avoid and if it bothers her too much she will end up unable to enjoy a ton of shows that are otherwise quite good :)
Yeah I hate fanservice too. I don't think Edgerunners has any though. There's a difference between typical anime fanservice and other examples of nudity. Edgerunners' nudity is there for a reason--it really sells the whole 'night club city's vibe. It helps immensely with developing the setting and often has symbolic importance. I also don't see how it could turn anyone on given the emotional darkness of the show and the heavy themes, not to mention all the body horror/synthetic skin, but not gonna kink shame ofc. None of it feels gratuitous to me. I think the story is better bc of it. Most anime fanservice is cringey, sexist, and pointless to the story. Edgerunners is one of the only anime exceptions I can think of where nudity actually makes the story better, not worse. So when people object to seeing Edgerunners bc of fanservice, I like to clarify whether it's nudity they're uncomfortable with or fanservice. If it's the former, no worries. If it's the latter, they should really give Edgerunners a shot.
I highly recommend adding Violet Evergarden, Dororo (2019), Fruits Basket (2019), Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, Sarazanmai (if you want a really good but amazingly weird one), Shiki (one of my all time favorites) and Mushishi (another favorite that would spark amazing discussions) to your to watch list. If you want a delightful palate cleanser I can not recommend Barakamon enough, it is delightful and could lead to fun discussions.
I think you two might really enjoy Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon. Its season just wrapped up and a 2nd was announced. Its a fantasy series with very good worldbuilding and character writing + every character is coded as neurodivergent (as an AuDHD person myself). I think itd be interesting for you guys to watch it! Frieren is also a very good fantasy anime, both write elves very interestingly
I personally haven't seen Solo Leveling, but IT IS on my must watch list, so if you guys start it imma speedrun it so i can see the reactions, after that, i would LOVE to see Frieren, i love the anime, and i think you guys would too

I don't know why people don't seem to recommend the anime Erased. It's also a short anime with only 12 episodes and is super emotional. Furthermore there is NO fan service if I remember correctly.
Edgerunners one of my absolute favorite animes, with the caveat that I am a huge fan of the game I found Vinland Saga a bit overhyped, it was ok but not great. Solo Leveling is actually next on my watch list, so I'll be finding out about it shortly. Have not seen Frieren so can't offer an opinion.
The whole building is infinite, so they won't ever be able to destroy it. Even if they tried to destroy a room, it'd also just redirect back from the top. (And the devil could probably just rebuild the small parts that have been destroyed, but i dont think we've seen that happen from what i remember).
Honestly Frieren is probably one of my favorite animes and it is considered one of those will become an all time great BUT the dub is seriously bad. I highly recommend watching it but the dub is just that bad so not sure if it is ideal for the channel.

It is great, but it is also 2 20+ episode seasons so far. I would prefer they do the 10 episodes of Edgerunners and then move on to that.

Guys, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the shortest anime here (only ten episodes), and people have been clamoring for months for you to watch it.
There's no reason you shouldn't pick the shortest option (regardless of Patreon votes) to give those shows a chance and move on to longers series later.
Only if they watch the English dub..

My vote would go to Frieren. Not only because Kenny hasn't seen it yet either, but also because I think there are far more interesting things to talk about in it than Solo Leveling. My viewing order would be: Frieren, Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Vinland Saga season 1, Solo Leveling, Vinland Saga season 2. Alternates between long and short seasons, prioritizing Cyberpunk after Frieren since it's a complete, short series.
Damn, after solo leveling frieren would be great. It’s one of my favorite shows of all time (especially the dub) but honestly, I think cyberpunk edgerunners should be after. if it was down to a vote between frieren (again, one of my favorites.) and cyberpunk edgerunners, I’d probably pick cyberpunk.
Yeah me too. Cyberpunk is way shorter and still has a lot to discuss and process. I'm interested for their thoughts on Solo Leveling because that show was just fine in my eyes. Looking forward to its second cour though. Can't wait for their reactions to Frieren and Vinland Saga. Absolutely amazing shows and I hope they will watch the Apothecary Diaries too.
Oh Frieren is amazing! My favourite anime in a long time if that's ever in consideration. I don't know how behind RUclips is though, maybe you've already decided.

Denji and power are the best 💀💀💀 they make this show even better than what it is they got so much charisma I can’t imagine this show without these two fr I love chainsaw man and a lot of it has to do with the impact those 2 cause
Im really hoping Montana's tolerance for fan service increases. I get her, i basically NEVER like it either. But its hard to avoid and if it bothers her too much she will end up unable to enjoy a ton of shows that are otherwise quite good :)
Yeah I hate fanservice too. I don't think Edgerunners has any though.
There's a difference between typical anime fanservice and other examples of nudity. Edgerunners' nudity is there for a reason--it really sells the whole 'night club city's vibe. It helps immensely with developing the setting and often has symbolic importance. I also don't see how it could turn anyone on given the emotional darkness of the show and the heavy themes, not to mention all the body horror/synthetic skin, but not gonna kink shame ofc. None of it feels gratuitous to me. I think the story is better bc of it.
Most anime fanservice is cringey, sexist, and pointless to the story. Edgerunners is one of the only anime exceptions I can think of where nudity actually makes the story better, not worse.
So when people object to seeing Edgerunners bc of fanservice, I like to clarify whether it's nudity they're uncomfortable with or fanservice. If it's the former, no worries. If it's the latter, they should really give Edgerunners a shot.
She really needs to just ignore it. This is a part of anime sometimes, so she should be used to it.

I highly recommend adding Violet Evergarden, Dororo (2019), Fruits Basket (2019), Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, Sarazanmai (if you want a really good but amazingly weird one), Shiki (one of my all time favorites) and Mushishi (another favorite that would spark amazing discussions) to your to watch list. If you want a delightful palate cleanser I can not recommend Barakamon enough, it is delightful and could lead to fun discussions.
I think you two might really enjoy Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon. Its season just wrapped up and a 2nd was announced. Its a fantasy series with very good worldbuilding and character writing + every character is coded as neurodivergent (as an AuDHD person myself). I think itd be interesting for you guys to watch it! Frieren is also a very good fantasy anime, both write elves very interestingly

I don't know why people don't seem to recommend the anime Erased. It's also a short anime with only 12 episodes and is super emotional. Furthermore there is NO fan service if I remember correctly.

I always had one doubt about getting stuck there. What happens if you break the entire building. Denji is strong enough to do that.
The whole building is infinite, so they won't ever be able to destroy it. Even if they tried to destroy a room, it'd also just redirect back from the top. (And the devil could probably just rebuild the small parts that have been destroyed, but i dont think we've seen that happen from what i remember).
I just watched 8 episodes in a row of Kaiju No. 8. I think it's right up your alley with shows like this and AOT.
Frieren is a masterpiece highly recommend

Honestly Frieren is probably one of my favorite animes and it is considered one of those will become an all time great BUT the dub is seriously bad. I highly recommend watching it but the dub is just that bad so not sure if it is ideal for the channel.
