  • Hoboken is an EMD classic diesel delight. It’s a working railroad museum that delivers the goods for thousands of NJT commuters. It has no equal in USA. Chicago’s OTC comes very close with their screaming F40’s but NJT has more variety.

My granddad was a Lackawanna train dispatcher who held down 1st trick on the Boonton Line. Spent many hours up in dispatcher office with him during the 50s and 60s. Lackawanna Edison Era MUs, Geeps, Es and Erie RS and PAs. The Phoebe Snow was still the premier passenger train. Was back in Hoboken in September...first time in more than 50 years!

Amazing place ❤ one of the last glory era of railroading, just hoping they keep the beautiful sheds and not destroyed it in the name of modernisation . Hope to see more videos at this location , thx 🙏🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

    Holy shit, 4119 was working??
But yeah, Hoboken is truly a delight. I went for the first time this past November, and again two days before the year was up. I occasionally see some Geeps working out of DC, but there's only one PH-2A down there and the only other GP40 is mostly in rescue service. Not only did Hoboken provide some great views of the remaining GP40's (both the CNJ originals and the CR rebuilds), but I got to hear an F40 up close for the first time. The F40PH-3C's might not be true screamers, but I bet for certain it was trying to. The GP40FH-2's were also quite odd to see up close. And then the PL42's and ALP-45's, they look so modern. Clearly European in origin, but in many ways feel like they can do more than commuter work. I unofficially think of the PL42's as the F70's we never got, what with their AC Traction and 710 4,200 HP prime movers being rough equivalents to the 70MAC's and 70ACe's, as well as the competitors to the P42's in having better traction and I _think_ cleaner exhaust but still being a bit too tall. And I nearly forgot the Arrows, clearly in need of replacing but they still do well when they work. The short ride I took to Newark was quite nice for my first ride on an overhead EMU.
I think Hoboken is probably the most hospitable terminal for railfanning in the NY Metro too. Grand Central feels a bit too shrouded for me, and I've been approached for lingering on the platforms in both Penn Stations. Yet Hoboken was fine, even late at night.

Thank you for this interesting clip with all the Classic EMD's. However i can tell you a brief story about Australia's oldest Diesel that happens to be one of The GM 1 Class members number GM 10 which like a number of Vintage EMD's built around the same time are loosely based on The EMD F Series but known affectionately as Bulldogs. Anyway GM 10 was one of the EMD ML 1's that entered service in June 1952 and is still working a little over 70 years later and nowadays is on the books of SSR or Southern Shorthaul Railroad. Having said that an number of The Bulldogs of Classes B, 42, 421, S and CL's among other classic GM's are either preserved or in Private ownership. GM 10 has the EMD Blower-Scavenged 2 Stroke 567B V16 engine developing 1500hp.

One of these days I will try and do a Hoboken railfan trip while also going to the subway museum.
Also glad to hear that you're also an Air Force veteran!

its a great terminal. you can get over to manhattan very easily via that path. if your going downtown manhattan from jersey its faster to go through hoboken.

They all seem to start moving and then come very nearly to a stop before moving off. Is that a brake test?

The veterans tribute on 4635 is a great idea but the execution is so dull and uninspiring. Willing to bet there is at least one freelance graphic designer in the NYC area who could come up with something infinitely better for relatively little money.

Regarding the engine first, the signs on the side of the cars indicate the train is bound for MSU. I have also seen 8-car sets running HOB-MSU before, and I would definitely imagine that these are actually sets that are based in NYP that rotate NYP-MSU-HOB-MSU-NYP, right?
