    I worked at Tesla starting in July of 2017 as an Operations Analyst out of the Bethlehem, PA distribution center facility and left as a Program Manager based out of Austin, TX as of September 2021. I spent most of my time in the distribution and supply chain organizations.
    Before Tesla, I was a Director of Business Intelligence and Pricing at the largest Pet Food & Supply distributor in the US, Phillips Pet Food & Supplies based out of Easton, PA. My wife and I also owned a small business in Bethlehem, PA between 2016 and 2019.
    I have been a shareholder of Tesla since 2012 and currently own Tesla stock. Nothing I say constitutes as investment or financial advice.

    I agree with removing non-technical middle managers. I have no idea how anyone thinks having them is a good idea. The only ones I can understand having are project managers

      Even for project managers, I would 100% prefer a technical project manager any day. In reality, TPMs are a lot more expensive so the luxury isn’t always there so I get why I often don’t have TPMs on my team.

      Yeah i agree. Middle men are so useless most of the time and just bloat budgets. At my company all they really do is nag to see how progress is going, even tho my supes already know. All while the "coordinators" kinda just fuck shit up and eat up my time while doing 0 technical work. And yet they get paid more than the technical workers. Its wiiiiild to me.

      I think the difference is Elon steered his company to create the industry. Like ev wasn't wanted and hyped up until Tesla came along, and people just don't think private rockets can make money until start link is sent to space (maybe it still doesn't , not sure)
      Whereas machine learning researchers just found out that GPU is really good at doing machine learning because it requires massive amount of parallelizable but simple calculations just like computer graphics.
      Not to discredit nvidia, which invested to develop CUDA (which probably enable the researchers to write ML code on top of it). But I just don't think it was a conscious decision and foresight.

      I don't know. If that's the case, Google wouldn't have made Tensor chips. In theory, there's a chip that is specialized for AI. This company called Grok (not X) makes special AI chips. If Nvidia doesn't specialize in AI, that's it.

      He stands out by not adding any useful information to the conversation. It's wild how much content he creates relative to the understanding of the technical matters at hand. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he spreads misinformation or anything, he just doesn't have anything to add. Yet, he insists on giving monologues in most of his videos (thankfully not this one). "This could happen. This might happen. What if this happens?" is a lot less valuable from him than most others in the community. My opinion is that he needs to continue facilitating conversations and talk less.

      I can understand why some people call him an asshole, because he really can be one. Imagine you making a stupid mistake, him belittling you in front of a crowd, you'd still think he's an asshole for exposing you like that. It's part of the job as big boss. But it makes sure you don't make that mistake again, and hammers a little humility into you, something a LOT more people could have more of.

    Imagine a strong engineer going from working for a company like Tesla to going to work for a company like GM or Ford. It would have to be extremely depressing. I am sure that sort of thing is rare except where the person just was not cutting it at Tesla

      I have a friend who was let go from Tesla after 2 years as a fresh grad electrical engineer, then he went off to work at Boeing. It wasn't depressing but it was definitely very different if you get what i'm saying

    You often hear: "Accept the realities" or "this is how we do things" or similar statements in almost all companies. The real reality is that you can change reality. Maybe not instantly, but over time. Most people in most companies want things to stay exactly the same as they are. But that means the company will lose its competitive edge over time. The only way companies can survive is through changing. Versions of the OODA Loop is required in any industry. The faster you iterate, the better.

    Let me add, ideas are welcomed and encouraged from anyone, production staff can pitch an idea directly to Elon or to other top management, raise your hand with a good idea at an all hands meeting and the response is simply “good idea, done,” and then it is done, super quickly. Lots of the production workers have degrees in engineering, sometimes advanced degrees, so they are not your average line worker at a legacy automaker. The number of engineers at Tesla far exceeds the number of people with engineer positions.

      I recall when Tim Dodd of Everyday Astronaut was conducting an interview with Elon Musk, Dodd mentioned something that eventually resulted in a design change on Starship. Elon will use ideas from anyone if it’s a good idea.

      @@Oxibase Yep, I remember that moment in the video well. It is the essence of the Musk lead company advantage. Look how completely 1400's married most autonomous companies are to LIDAR, until death do they part. No divorces allowed. And see how many times Tesla rethought and changed how they were getting FSD done. Now Tesla has stuck with vision only, but I guarantee if I brought them something better they would go for it.

    When Microsoft was a startup with only 160 employees, Bill Gates argued against "technical inversions," where a programmer works for somebody who doesn't know how to program. Now that Microsoft has over 200k employees, that's difficult to sustain. Tesla has over 140k employees; I hope they can sustain their drive, focus, and flat organization.

      As an admin I hate it that most IT departments are lead by non-IT people. I wonder why CEOs believe that's a winning strategy. It makes zero sense and is unheard of in many other professions. It's unfortunately but not surprisingly the root cause of many homemade avoidable problems.

    Same in Sweden as a general, if the company goes bad, you blame the workers and even tho the company goes really bad, you praise the leaders, for their commitment for staying due to lack of the workers commitment.
    In sweden, being promoted means you work less, due to the hierarchical structure, you make others do your work.

    The one thing you didn't mention which is perhaps the most profound of all is Elon's rigid adherence to first principles thinking. An important rule that's a result of that thinking is "never optimize something that shouldn't exist."
    Adhering to those principles is extremely difficult which is why most companies don't do it.

      @@neozes It's a big problem in engineering in fact Musk talked about it at SpaceX. Coupled with first principles thinking, it's a way of approaching design with a level of rigor not typically seen in most companies.
      Email is a great example. There are all kinds of apps to optimize email but we don't use any of them because email is a terrible communication tool. We simply don't use email.

      @@neozes Munro & Associates urge companies to create parts that have more than 1 function/use. Tesla - in contrast to many other companies - actually listen to Munro's advice and implement their suggestions accordingly. Good examples are structural battery packs in EVs, Tesla's octovalve and Tesla's gigacasting machines. Having parts serve more than 1 purpose is also first principles thinking. By merging a structural frame and batteries into a single assembly, you have less parts and less complexity to deal with during manufacturing. The best part is NO part. I guess the steering wheel, brakes and accelerator pedals will be the next victims, inside the robotaxi ;-)

    just a very engineering ( former engineer ) mindset that's what I see. I think the guy is super driven by his vision and just as a scrum master he is here to remove blocages. And for the vibe that he wants he wants the creativity of the first days of the silicon valley almost passionate.. you know the homebrew club ( where a steve wozniak was ) or the campus like stanford or stuff.
    the thing is a lot of people enter tech for the salary. not for the passion so they sit at the office they are not buzzing they are not geeky. The investors and money pressure is taking out the fun the creativity. This can kill the SV and I think Elon understand that logically or instinctually. I don't know.

      I'm from Germany. I don't know if it's very different in the USA, but here, actually learning/studying things like management/organisation/leadership etc. is almost unheard of. Managers are only found in big companies and they usually haven't learned it. They were simply promoted or hired AS a manager. The same goes for CEOs. Or current CEO for example is actually a sales person. And it shows. He's not really taking care of the company. He's basically the inofficial head of sales. He sees everything through that lenses, and everything else is neglected.
      So I'm not surprised that german managers suck, because they're usually amateurs. But sales? That surprised me!
      But I have to ask: Why do you think they are incompetent? What have you witnessed?

      @@allesdurchprobiert Well, as an example you can take the fact that large fleet buyers have abandoned Tesla, mostly for the reason that Tesla service doesn't meet expectations (also also due to huge price fluctuations). It has been in the news that Sixt and SAP will no longer buy Tesla. These issues are within the power of Tesla to fix and it would be the responsibility of Tesla sales to identify and escalate any complaints before customers jump ship.

    Here is the thing. I don't know if he actually suffers from a disease such as autism or not but I can see this as a trained observer. He knows what humanity is up against, most do not and he doesn't really talk about it in detail. He is truly a high functioning gifted person who has a set agenda and that time is ticking, not only for him but all of us. I can also say that everything younghink he believes in, well I'll say it this way, is possibly just a means to an end. Remember that he is human and he absolutely loves his family and if you had family members that close and dear wouldn't you sorta accept their views especially if it doesn't hurt anything, remember the main agenda is that the MAIN. Some of the most brilliantbgifted people walking the planet tend to either be full autistic and very hard to function in public but then even more rare are those who have a touch of this condition but can and do function in society, but I'm talking super duper rare and I believe that may be him. As you can tell I don't know this because it doesn't matter to me as I believe we just need to accept each other at what we are good or bad, not meaning harmful folks of course. So I just enjoy watching him closely to see all the signs that I do and marvel at it. Love y'all and be safe outbthere❤️🙏🇺🇸

      This is becoming an inarticulate and ham fisted argument at this point. There are plenty of burnout rich kids who spend most of their inheritance and privilege on vacations to Ibiza and yearly PFW vacays. If James Harkins had $100M dollars could he run 3-4 companies at a time or would he just be an insufferable and uninspiring leader?

    Yes, use govt money to build a company, hire smart people while you sit as the head of company. This is like jockeying. The horse does the work, the jockey gets the reward. Or like a pimp, where you get money from other people's work. A very unique leadership it is.
