The Helix definitely sounds like it would fit better into a mix but, personally, I preferred the sound out of the POD500. Just sounded nicer to my ears
I see what you mean hahahahah even though I prefer the helix sound cuz its cleaner, as a modern djenter I prefer a cleaner sound, I can see why you prefer the pod sound
I recently organised a gig here & ALL the bands had guitarists using the Zoom G3 with either an amp or direct. One of them was using a Zoom G3 again but with Mooer Radar, direct. I think this just makes the unit really usable. With cab sims, budget units were not acceptable till recent times. More expensive & most probably better is a Torpedo Cab Sim but the Radar makes sense with the POD. I have a borrowed HD400 unit with me along with my own pedals. The sound is very shrill, even a cheap analog pedal sounds better than the amp modelling but the FXssss.
@@rhitosparsha I was talking to someone on The Gear Page just yesterday & with all the hype around the Helix, he told me the POD sounds nice except the cab simulation. If you can use a CAB M or a Mooer Radar, I think it can take it to the next level. And you need something like that for silent playing at night too.
@@andreasrickert8590 My bandmate has a Boss GT-100, and we were struggling to get a great metal sound out of it. He got the Mooer Radar and the improvement was HUGE! It's just so much easier now to get a great tone.
I have the 500X and the Helix Rack myself. And this is obvious ! The dynamic, the feel, the life, the quality of preamps (and cabs especialy dual cab on the helix buuuuut is use IR) is improved by 1000% for sure !
The core sound is very similar and the main difference in my opinion is difference in cab simulation. I bet you could tinker with the 500 and add some highs and they would sound nearly indistinguishable....
Preset 1: Pod HD500 (all riffs, sounded so much better). The Helix sounded really weak and thin. Preset 2: Helix had a nicer crunch and won entire round for me. Preset 3: The HD500 won, the Helix sounded thing again. Funnily enough I seem to have picked the HD500 in two out of the three presets you played. I own the 500x and I am able to get some amazing tones out of it, it can be hard to dial-in a nice tone, but with a little elbow grease nobody can tell the difference between a HD500 or real amp in most blindfold tests or if you're playing live (like I have, nobody can tell). As you say so yourself, they're both incomparable. But there is no disputing that the HD500 is much better for its price. In Australia, the Helix LT is around $1800 AUD. The HD500x is about $700 AUD, so the Helix LT is double the price here. And while the low-end might sound better on the Helix, you can easily EQ the HD500 to sound amazing and if you're recording and mixing, you're doing that anyway.
Interesting comparison. The helix will fit better in the mix with these settings. But at the end everything is about eq and I am really excited for the next videos to see how it compares. I will have one soon;)
In todays music world though, with enough dialing, you can make the hd sound better than the helix. You can also make the helix sound better than the hd. The differences are subjective. The helix doesn't sound better, it sounds different. I have a pod hd hooked straight into a pa, with a tone that can make a 5150 or a dual rec sound like dirt old tech. Live, and in a mix. Amp modelling is like the "does size matter" question. It really is all about how you use it. Also my live rig is only about 550 bucks. And its ready to go. The price of the helix alone negates its practicality. Especially when someone with a pod hd can play beside you with a helix and no one can tell who is playing what. Its worth it if you have the money, but its not necessary at all. if you want a rig 1,200 bucks cheaper than everyone else, that CAN sound better if you know what you're doing.... POD!!!!
Used the hd500x on many a stage, always sounded better than other bands with even boutique valve amps when in small venues, if the monitoring is okay that is... If the venues big enough/bands loud enough then valves are more fun definitely!
I agree that they both sound different! That being said, I prefer the gritty sound of the 500 rather than the (smoothish?) sound of the helix. Both units deliver, it's just a matter of what type of sound you are after. I play blues and the grittiness of the sound the 500 delivers would work better for me.
It sounds like that permanent layer of mud I could never get rid of in the HD is gone in the Helix. The helix seems to have much more clarity and note definition to my ears, very noticeable in your Soldano preset from 2:12 to 2:31. The palm mutes sound very natural. Fantastic video!
Exactly, there's that weird "frequency cloud" on the HD how I like to call it, that no EQ is able to take out because it's all over the place. It's just unnatural.
Nice job! I'm sure that the HD500 can get a little closer in sound overall with some eq work, but the bottom line still stands as you've shown, the Helix is much more advanced.
Im glad i found this again. Been thinkin about it. Those pod sounds can be eq out or bbe sonic stomp but the helix floor has many features i cant avoid. Mays well save
Yeah to be completely honest, neither of the units sound particularly good or band in this comparison I must admit. The Helix may sound thinner, but in my ears more natural (it has some of that amp fizz and crispyness) and if you'd have to integrate the POD sound into a mix, I bet you'd have to do a lot of EQing. Especially that lowend rumble has always been a problem I think.
I have a helix as well as HD500x, in the band mix during live show, no one would be able to tell nor anyone cares, I’m able to get killer sounds with both without using external IR’s, I’ve also rotated them both depending on the gig schedule and they both sound and feel fantastic, sound/tone at band dynamics and depending on style is very subjective...
1st, great playing! 2nd, this is SO useful! I’ve always hated how amp sims sound muffled or like the tone is rolled off on your guitar. Your demo showed me that is solved on the helix. Great job and thank you!
To me the Helix just sounds much brighter and more tinny. Im sure both can be made to sound identical with some tweaking. Ive noticed my HD500X is more dark and boomy/closed in especially thru my Orange TH30 and V30 cab but it can easily be corrected and tweaked.
More harmonic density and clarity up the high end of the spectrum in the Helix but I'm not necessarily sure I like it any more just hearing them by themselves. The Helix probably stands out a lot more in a mix though, I'm sure.
Sold my hd500x and start using helix native. Really hard to compare them in mix. But the felling is way more better with helix. Hd500x doing job in FX loop and sounds great. But finally start enjoying of playing on headphones.
The Pod is warmer but lacks almost any natural high end. Helix has a broader range of frequencies. Pod sounded a bit scooped. If the sizzling high end is too much you can always EQ it out. On the Pod you can't really add more high end if it's not there to begin with.
dude, just missclicked the slow button at 0.5 speed - you sound as if you were completely drunk lol ^^ offtops aside - can't wait for your "amp simulation only" comparison - I was about to buy HD500X but now when you demo'ed the Helix LT I seriously think about saving some more money to get one. Cheers!
The 500 could match the helix with a tweak of the eq. The helix sounds thin and brittle but that is what would sit in a recorded mix well. They both do a great job and the 500 is a bargain on the used market now so budget is a factor for lots. For less that £400 you can buy a headrush FRFR and a pod 500hd and have a great gigging kit. Who can say that isn't a bargain?!!
With the mooer radar or mooer GE200 coming up, it will at least level the playing field... Please do compare each other using the same cab impulses to see if its really worth shelling out $1000 for the helix
I would say Pod is the best if you're a rhythm guitarist. Helix for lead. The pod sounds fuller, accentuates low dynamics more, sounds warm af. I would think it were a tube amp if i didn't know it was an emulator. The helix sounds just as warm, but the sound is thinner. However what it lacks in meaty substance, it more than makes up for with a clean tone especially at high gain. all in all, it just depends on the situation or you
Would love to watch your Review on Helix and Fractal audio Ax8... and give us your thoughts on which one sounds and feels better in terms of dynamic response and which one would you pick up if u had to choose one

The mid and treble sound like it’s turned way up on the helix. Just by default. Sounds like your sag is turned up. The strings sound floppy and squishy.
It's useless to compare them with the identical settings. Back in the day, Line 6 claimed, that they made the knobs on the amp/preamp settings to behave the same as on the original ones, so they should drastically vary from how settings changes affect the sound of HD500.
Line 6 cabinet models have always sucked, at least for heavy/distorted guitar settings. I say this as an owner of multiple L6 products (Flextone, Vetta II, Spider IV and POD HD 500). The Flextone doesn't have programmable cab modeling. My Spider IV is one of the little practice amps and doesn't have it either. These are plug in and go amps that are relatively easy to get decent sounds out of. The Vetta II and the HD 500 are very difficult to get good sounding distortion and high gain sounds out of, in large part due to the lousy cab sims. It's like they finally got it in the ball park with Helix.
