Conan had two fathers, the one from his doomed village, and Thulsa Doom.
Conan had two heritages, one of steel, one of flesh.
His first father died because he relied only on steel.
Doom died because he relied only on flesh.
But Conan mastered both, and thus solved the Riddle of Steel.
Steel grows dull and brittle and flesh withers and decays, but an indomitable will born of the human spirit is eternal
Yin and Yan Brother. One depends on the other. Balance is all. Awesome deduction and resolution. Best regards mate. See you on the halls of Crom.
He was not fooled
Flesh in one hand, steel in the other.
Interesting
I think James Earl Jones portrayal of Thulsa Doom was absolutely brilliant!
Conan solved the riddle of steel: steel is nothing without a strong hand to wield it, a strong hand is nothing without a strong mind to motivate it, and a strong mind is nothing without a strong heart to fortify it.
Yes, dude!😁👊👍👍👍
Funny how it all hits the fan whenever James Earl Jones calls someone his son...(Conan, Luke Skywalker, Simba..)
Haha
True
No matter what movie he stars in, James Earl Jones will always be "Your Father" ::: mechanical breathing :::
Coming to America 🇺🇸🤪 2
Hahaha
In movies, james earl jones is to sons what sean bean is to being killed
James Earl Jones's speech is legitimately chilling, its so good.
One of his best roles 🔥🔥
This was Conan's last test: his strength of will against the man who both broke him down and built him up. Steel was but a tool, as was the hand wielding it. But the true wellspring of power was Conan's own will against a manipulative, evil warlord.
What most people never mention, that during this scene, Thulsa Doom is clearly talking about using his followers to commit a mass genocide against their own families, their leaders in their Kingdoms, and others in their communities, then later the world. If successful, his cult would have dominated the landscape. It is at the key moment when Conan beheads Thulsa Doom, that the world is made safer. Whole of history was changed in a few seconds.
@Nature Of The Beast he was a snake man, one of the serpent people from ancient times. From Kulls time of atlantis. Not a human. Demonic worshippers of old fake snake gods or demons in the age of valusia. Yiggith or something then in Conans times called Set.
The end goal was to wipe out all humans
The satisfact of hearing the head like a empty coconut shell bounce down the stairs.
Yup, Conan got there in the nick of time.
Think about when this was released. The backlash against hippies was fierce, but important for mainstream America.
So. Let Arnie slice and dice those macrame planter freaks, and rejoice in suppressing a cult.
"damn, I guess we're not in a cult anymore."
I still love this Actor James Earl Jones. He has that deep conqueror voice!! Like a true emperor or king
He is darth vader 's voice
it's still hard to believe he was in it. you forget because he's not in it much.
"I still love this Actor James Earl Jones."
Who doesn't?
Arnold showed the scum bag with the boss was
not so much anymore he's gotten quite old
One of the most satisfying scenes ever.
Relief of completion extremely difficult task, after long, risky effort...
"If you're going to kill a king; you must do it in front of his subjects."
Conan remembered what his real Father had told him - trust NO ONE. But STEEL, you can TRUST. And so he did.
but I thought that answer was wrong he learned when he broke the sword, even though he kills Doom with a broken one.
Neither his father or doom correctly answered the riddle. Only conan figured it out. Its not flesh or steel but will
@@TheMovieHowze I wondered why Doom cares about the riddle, he believes in Set, not Crom.........or maybe both?
@@thesnare100 I think this was set in the iron age and people were fascinated with steel.
@@seeweezekeit's set in a fictional period before recorded history, called the hyborian age, as Akiro says "between the time the oceans drank Atlantis and the Rise of the sons of Aryas" the sons of the aryas are the "master race" as the author subscribed the Hitler's master race idea
At the end after the vengeance Conan felt empty inside. What a masterpiece
Just like im real life, after revenge you better have s plan what to do with your life
He became the hero, the hero at the service of others. Just watch how he treates the princess at the end, he ignores her praise and offers his hand. The rest is Conan (the hero) story, and that story shall also be told....

Conan: wait a minute......you killed my father
Thulsa: AAAAAAAHHHHHH i almost got you, i almost got you
*both laugh uncontrolably*
Conan: ahahahaha!! god that was good!!........you almost did it, you almost did it.
*proceed to behead thulsa*
Not empty. Satiated.
But it also showed his iron tempered resolve. Doom was right. His entire life was built up to this moment, what was there for him in life after this moment? Conan didn't know himself, but he sure as hell was determined go find out!
Luke, Simba, Conan, my god he screwed around a lot to have such a varied list of sons.
Prince Akeem?
''When I am gone, you will have never been. what will your world be without me?'' this is reminiscent to the tones and themes of an unhealthy / toxic relationship. Like when an abuser in a relationship keeps their partner trapped by falsely declaring that they need them to survive, and that their world will be nothing if they leave them. Conan for a second was trapped under that thrall, but had the will and spirit to purge himself of Doom forever. Doom was Conan's meaning for life, for decades, the source of his pain, and the end goal that he was working towards. Doom tried to manipulate that need in Conan, but now Conan is free to forge a new destiny and life without Thulsa Doom. Awesome film!
I wish I could give you more likes.
Doom was a Sodomite and Conan said "You're NOT my father!" You killed my father! Prepare to die! - Inigo Montoya
Really? I felt back in the days as if Conan came to the realization that he would have been with his family and friends if not for him. Which made Arnold blink a couple of times and decided to return the favor for what he did to his mother when he was a boy.
Pretty much every fundamentalist religious leadership engages in this.
The power of his father's sword. even though broken allowed him to push through the thrall and attack.
There is something so magnificent and believable about these movies, for all Conans strength and ferocity, you feel that he is vulnerable. You can actually see yourself as him because he is just as mortal and fallible like the rest of us
I will say over and over, if you're an aspiring movie maker and you dream of making an sci-fi/fantasy epic, and you want a truly mesmerising, unforgettable villain, you cast a classically trained theatre actor.
George Lucas knew what he was doing when he cast the actors for The Emperor, Obi-Wan and Count Dooku
Not just the villains, either. Classically trained actors bring tremendous power to any role. Look at Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Patrick Stewart as Captain Picard, or Cate Blanchett as Galadriel.
James Earl Jones was masterful in this role
Thulsa Doom was the smoothest talker around. Almost got himself out of that.
He was using magic on Conan. Too bad for him it failed.
@@TheIrishRushin He remembered what his real Father had told him - trust NO ONE, But STEEL, you can TRUST. And so he did.
Yes he had pulled the same trick on conan mom
@@moshedayan2810 And he succeeded on her.
He failed to do it to Conan, however.
Remembering what Thulsa Doom did to his mother snapped him back into reality.
@@redpyramid9697 in hindsight it seems he could have disposed of Conan's mom without using all the hypnosis mumbo jumbo.. She was the only survivor of the village and anyone of thulsa's henchperson could have done away with her....if thulsa hadn't used his magic stuff on Conan's mom, he could have overwhelmed Conan with the magic in the climax... As Conan wouldn't have been forewarned.. Just because he had seen thulsa doing the mumbo jumbo on his mom before he killed her, Conan came to his senses at the crucial juncture and had his revenge much the same way ie decapitation
I never noticed it but reading through some comments on other Connan's scenes I discovered a comment that pointed out that Conan in the movie holds the broken sword of his father after killing rexor in right hand and head of thulsa doom in left hand which is a symbol of their ideas behind the riddle of steel. Conan is in between and symbolizes the right answer.
I have to give full props to the Foley artist who got the sound just right of Thulsa Doom's severed head bouncing down the steps.
Too bad this remaster of the scene cut out the screams of the cultists as he threw it.
Like flat basketball..eeeww
Maybe it's a bit gruesome, but I kept thinking that a head would sustain more damage if thrown like that. I mean, maybe even cracking like a watermelon and teeth fying out and shit.
THUNK THUNK thunk thunk thunky-thunky-thunky-thunky-thunky-thunk ??
@@fedegibsonlespaul There was an issue of Savage Sword of Conan in which a lunatic wizard jumps from a tower, claiming he could fly. Of course, he couldn't, so he goes splat. I still picture the comic panel of him hitting the pavement, and the text was something along the lines of "hitting the flagstones with the sound of an overripe melon being smashed by a sledgehammer.*
Happy 90th Birthday to James E. Jones 2021!!! It's been years since I've seen this movie.
There is a lot of psychology in this movie, when i was a kid i didn't pay attention, but now when im older you can see a lot of brainwashing from thulsa doom, yes he is a wizard but he feeds on power and control from other people, when you take that away he is just normal like everyone else, you can connect this to some cult leaders or even politics its mind-blowing
Thulsa Doom was a typical power hungry politician. Most of his damage was done by his followers cause they believed in him. Their whole reality revolved around this man who build himself up to be the chosen one (someone close to a deity or presents himself as one) and if they follow him he would lead them to a better future (or a promised afterlife). With one swoop of Conan's sword that image of him was shattered as how can a mere mortal hurt/kill this deity unless that deity was fake or that mortal is not a mortal after all but a better deity (most would rather attempt to believe a greater deity as the belief in wasting their precious time in worshipping a fake deity for years is too much for the ego to handle). This is what also happened in the movie The Chronicles of Riddick.
You if you had the interpretation that Thulsa Doom actually was just a faker when it came to the magic and was just THAT good at manipulating people... It wouldn't be a hard thing to believe.
He's a phenomenal villain who feels a lot more real than most cinematic villains these days.
This is because he is a malignant narcissist
Exactly when I watched this again as an adult it reminds me of the Green New Deal religion we currently have.
@@craigthescott5074 Really... your logic is completely flawed! The only cult figure that comes to mind about being a narcissist leader would be the guy that owns Trump Tower! Tell me if I'm wrong... He lost the election! He lost in court challenges to the elections by 60 to 0! He chose to incite his supporters to go to the Capital building in Washington and violently tried to illegally takeover a democratically elected government! (Hint) They called themselves MAGA's. How many times in US history did that type of violence ever happen before? If that's not a cult following... I don't know what is?!
A lot has been said already, but I especially love the actual set, the extras holding torches...It gives a special atmosphere to the scene. And no CGI in sight - everything is real (except James Earl Jones being killed obviously :) )
No they actually killed him.

Just now realized he decapitated him with his father's sword, which he broke and took from Doom's henchman at the Battle of the Mounds.

James Earl Jones to Luke Skywalker: "I am your father."
Luke: "No, it's not true!"
James Earl Jones to Conan: "I am your fathe---"

Thulsa is gonna be paying a lot of back child support.

Well, to be fair Luke was pretty firmly on the ropes for his scene. Dangling over a massive fall and, ah, thoroughly disarmed.
Still then, Luke didn't play along, taking his chances with the fall.
Great, great, great, great, great film!!!! Not heralded enough. A stroke of genius on the part of John Milius, Oliver Stone and Basil Poledouris. Bravo!

1982
I was a 12 year old kid when I watched this EPIC in a Movie Theater.
Here in Brasil the Film was rated 16 [the equivalent to an R rated in North America].
I would have never entered that screening room if it wasn't for a real life CONAN who stood in line behind me.
The ticket girl was inquiring me "how old are you, boy?"
& I was trying to babble convincingly "uhh...sixteen"
When a long haired thunderous voiced fella [the man behind me at the queue] bellowed:"oww, let the boy get in and watch "CONAN"!What harm can it do to him?!"
She promptly let me in.
I sat in that dark room, watched in admiration&respect that stranger sit only a few seats away from me on the same aisle.

@@roadkiller904 Decapitation of David Warner in Omen (1976) is too quick death to call it especially ruthless. Conan chopping Thulsa is way more ruthless because it took, quite realistically, many blows to cut the head off.

John Milius is a genius.
Glad they left the princess in on the director's cut. Plus when Conan drops his sword at the end, showed that Conan had found purpose, and his path of vengeance was done.
One of my favorite movie of all time
In the end, he remembered what his real Father had told him - Trust NO ONE. But STEEL, you can TRUST. And so he did.
I don't think it's that simple. Conan's sword is broken in the scene, symbolizing that steel was not the answer. Thulsa Doom said that flesh was the answer, but was still defeated. It's deliberately ambiguous, but I think that Conan broke Doom's hypnosis and control by finding his own answer in that moment. Whether you believe it's "human will" or "the steel and flesh together" or something else being the solution, I think Conan finding his own answer rather than just accepting either of these two "fathers" is the key. It wouldn't be so memorable if it was just a simple revenge story about remembering his Father's words and copying his Father's answer.
@@spankminister Conan's sword wasn't broken, that was his father's sword he took from Rexor. That's why he used that sword to kill Doom and get his revenge.
3:24 the origin of the mic drop

I always loved the sound effects of the head hitting the stairs
I was about 4 years old when I seen this film, this scene is epic and the movie itself goes way deeper than you, thingk, germanic runes on the sword of his father, no one can you trust, this, you can trust, the tomb of the king scene, the revenge scenes, real 7 pound stainless steel swords were used, and historical hunnic invasion of a germanian village, then to Persia and Mongolia with subotai, the same name of Genghis Khans succesor, everything is simply magnificent, the outfits....
Who on earth let's a 4 year old watch this?
Thulsa Doom had a point, he did make Conan by having his family killed when he was little, turning him into the barbarian he had become. I don't think he thought this would be the outcome though.
In that moment Conan solved the riddle of steel holding his father sword, then he became the hero.
Ye,but his was the will to avenge. Not thulsa's will
@@MrHupo Yep exactly, Conan could've succumbed to Thulsa Doom's power and spell like the entire cult did, but instead he defied Doom and brought his downfall! In other words, trauma may shape your perception of this world, but ultimately it's what you do with that perception that makes the profound difference!
In the end Conan made himself by his own choices. At the end he also dropped the broken blade. Signaling to me he also stopped his quest for the riddle of steel, or looking for a father figure and instead became a man who realised he controlled his own destiny.
it's interesting when Doom had him earlier and explained the riddle of steel. it was half true - flesh, or will, is stronger than steel. but his ends were still corrupt. I guess the riddle to steel is that, like will, it has to have the right owner? but just as each sword is different, you can't tell someone what that is, so it's always an ongoing riddle
Holy shit that was so visceral.. I've seen a lot of violence in movies and tv, but this actually feels real. The sound too!
And that's how Tulsa, Oklahoma was found, after the slain Darth.
It was almost founded in Iowa, though, near the Field of Dreams.

James Earl Jones is an amazing actor. Thulsa Doom, Darth Vader and Mufaza so many other characters. He is a national treasure.
Collective thinking vs a strong individual
because conan is a barbarian, not a civilized man
Such a powerful moment
This movie was made very soon after the Jonestown massacre in 1979....it was in social consciousness and this movie reflected the power of cult and powerful suicidal leaders....this movie came out at thr right time as well....1982.
I prefer the theatrical cut ending to the directors cut. When he throws the head and it travels down the stairs; a few of his believers cry out. Also the musical score and the burning of the temple better signify a closure in this chapter of Conan's life goal. Either way; a wonderful film. The music says it all. Thank you for posting the video. 😊
I find that head rolling too long in silence a bit too comical, there should have been more crying out especially by the women as Conan would finally achieve his belief in what is best in life: " "Crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of the women!"
Totally agree the theatrical cut is so much better than this cut , I find all the silly posing by the princess really detracts from the whole scene . Completely unnecessary and the screams add so much more to it as well .

Luke doesn't kill Vader. Palpatine did via Force Lightning
@@chrismc410 hmmm some say as Vader removed his helmet, he could no longer breath.
Others say when a Jedi turns into a Sith he is injected a poison that is activated by the light side of the force, so if he ever repents he dies.
So it is a question of interpretation.
@@jackieollij7434 as Vader himself said nothing would stop his death. Palpatine probably had already fried it beyond repair, taking off the mask as he pointed out made no difference. I don't know about the toxin thing. He's literally gotten his wig split to the white meat by Obi-Wan and Ahsoka and sustained much damage than Luke inflicted. Wow what a great scene.
Thulsa Doom was actually a character in the King Kull stories, who they put into the conan movie for some reason. Conan fought many villains, but his "arch nemesis" was probably Toth Amon. But these characters are pretty interchangeable anyway
Except the part where Thulsa Doom in the novels where Thulsa's head is just a skull with glowing eyes. Though, that could be saved as a revelation for the final battle.

And thus legends are born. Conan was truly born to be king!!

The obvious thing would have been for Conan to behead Doom in one swing, showing his might and reflecting how his mother was killed in front of him. Instead he gave more of an angled blow, which seemed like a deliberate act so Doom would have a moment to think about it before the deed was finished. Barbaric.

He killed him in almost the same manner when Thulsa killed his mother in the beginning, Thulsa let his guard down and relaxed and got his head chopped off.
After watching this clip I see some exact parallels in Thulsa Dooms speech with the Green New Deal religion.
There isn't a scene with James Earl Jones in this movie he doesn't steal completely.
What a boss scene.
Imagine if your entire life had one single purpose, and that is revenge. You survive against all odds, endure all kinds of hardship, escape slavery and even death. You're about to fullfill your purpose and you realise - what then? Thulsa was right, Conan became who he was because of him. Who Conan would be without him? I believe Tulsa had a fair shot at bringing conan to his side at that moment
That's why Doom was such an interesting villain. Those who followed him did so willingly.
It also mirrors the beginning, when Doom tries to mesmerize Conan's mother. She still resists and doesn't submit, so he kills her. It could be nothing, or a little nod that the strength of Conan's will came from his mother, not his father. It also has a logical flow throughout the rest of the film, as most women fall to Doom quite easily but not Conan's mom, she had that fire of defiance that carried on through her son.
Thulsa's one mistake was her constantly referred to Conan's father, thinking the mother irrelevant...But he completely missed that Conan was holding her hand when she died, that he watched her resist him.
Damn this movie is so fucking good.
What then? He becomes the next Dread Pirate Roberts, of course.

I wonder if he was thinking about Valeria's offer earlier on before it was too late. esp how he ignores the princess when he walks down and she's bowing. maybe that was the riddle of steel? that it's only a means to an end, not a life like he believed and lived?

This movie is more poignant to me as I get older. To what extent are we made by our pain? If I could go back in time and tell my younger self to avoid all contact with the one person who hurt me more than anyone else, would that have been the right thing to do? Probably, but at the same time, I'm grateful for the wisdom I've gained from that experience. It made me who I am today. This movie is about nothing less than meaning of power and whether suffering and injustice are redeemed by the strength that we might gain from triumphing over dire adversity. Are they? I would have liked, right at that moment where Conan snaps back to reality, a quick flash of his mothers face. Almost subliminal.
Conan was great not because he destroyed a king, or an empire, but because he did what is considered impossible. He destroyed a religion.
