@@kamacazi8as D&D started in 1974. the swing to fantasy in culture has begun a few years before this. That was the rage on college campuses and at military installations worldwide. I don't see this crew being involved with it when they filmed it in 1981, but I surely see them sitting at lunch while someone reads a Howard novella to them to get them immersed.

I remember the laughs in the theater audience when the montage cut to Valeria in the priestess outfit imitating the pose. a simple bit of comedy that gives a lot of information in an instant
A "strong female character" who actually looked like they could hold their own. This movie was special.

The music is perfect for the scene
music, setting, atmosphere, character reactions, showing the slow anatomy of climbing and movement, I mean when is the last time you saw a person in a movie hold their nose and it not be in jest/part of a joke... it just checks soo many boxes. Big scenes/settings even if they are only for a little bit, but at least they take their time and you can soak it in (not like modern ones where they flash a scene or show it for a few seconds with a shaky camera.. UGH lol ) ... everything has detail. This isn't even nostalgic for me lol, Love it, just great.
The Warrior/Barbarian, the Thief/Archer and the Amazon. This is better than Golden Axe and D&D put together!

Later in the movie, when Thorgrim gets impaled by the booby trap spike, the death cry he uses is one of the main death cry soundbites used in the arcade version of Golden Axe.

When movies actually followed the source material....This, Conqueror and Destroyer were made by ppl who knew and loved the source material. You can tell. All the novels, even the Terry Brooks ones follow this same type of formula this and Destroyer and Conqueror do.

I really miss the great movies in the 80's. I prefer the Barbarian over Destroyer because the Warrior/Barbarian, the Thief (Archer) and the Amazon were too strong and real warriors.

Its funny that Subotai is the thief and yet its Conan, a barbarian, who actually sneaked and stole the gem. And lo and behold, Conan failed the dice roll and the snake detected him, should've switched places tbh.
I the Conan universe is it pre ordained that Valarea must die to one day protect Conan? "Do you want to live forever" here. Later she gives herself to the gods to bring him back to life and sweats she will come back from the dead to fight by his side. Later she comes from the dead to protect him.
In the books she only appears in one story, and while cool, I think the movie version rocks more. In the story though, she survives.
