- Welcome to our Chair Pilates: Gentle Exercises for Seniors and Beginners video. These chair exercises for seniors over 60 will build strength with no twisting or bending. This gentle pilates for beginners may also be arthritis friendly. Please check with your health care professional to determine if this workout is right for you.
These exercises for seniors over 60 and beginner workout at home require a sturdy chair with no arms and pillow for one of the exercises. You can do them in your bare feet or socks.

Benefits of pilates includes:

Pilates focuses on increasing core strength and breathing correctly is important. Let’s practice Pilates breathing:
✳️ Pull your belly button in
✳️ Place hands on sides of lower rib case
✳️ Inhale through your nose and feel breath expand to the sides
✳️ Exhale through your mouth
✳️ Repeat.

Hi I'm a 62yr old male and I have lumbar stenosis and I'm not able to stand for more than a couple of minutes and walking is nigh on impossible could you recommend some seated exercises to help. Thank you Colin.

I feel as though I was suddenly transported to different planet of exercise! Each move had multiple items requiring attention. The routine looks deceptively simple, but keeping the navel in during each move was very challenging while performing the moves. I have strong abs, and I felt them really working. This one requires a bit more fine tuning to enable me to concentrate on the components of every move. Most excellent and intriguing. Thank you April . You did great, Aiko!

April, I'm so glad you now have a chair Pilates workout! I know I have a full rotator cuff tear in the right shoulder and most likely some degree of tear in the left (pending MRI.) I know I have to keep moving the shoulders to avoid frozen shoulder, but certain movements cause discomfort. Do you have any suggestions for doing the arm exercises in this workout? Thank you and your Mom for your wonderful Yes2Next workouts :)
We understand. Since you have frozen shoulder, only do movements recommended by your doctor or physical therapist. In this workout, one modification is to not move the shoulder, but do the movements from the elbows. So for arm presses, press hands down by bending the elbows and keeping the shoulders still. For the arm crosses, keep your shoulder still, bend your elbows and criss cross your hands. Stop if you feel any pain. We're so happy you enjoy our workouts. Keep building strength safely and gradually! ❤️
Those tips are super helpful! I don’t have frozen shoulder yet, so my ortho dr said I should keep moving the shoulders as I am able and stop at any pain. This workout is gentle enough, perfect!

Try to keep your belly button pulled in slightly as you inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth - this keeps your abdominal muscles strong by doing so! You are doing your body good! Hi Ladies, and thanks for this exercise (never done pilates before). One question : are we meant to keep the belly-button constantly pulled in (as I did), or does it follow the breathing (belly in, breath out...) ?

When I do the arm pumping up and down my right shoulder clicks on every pump. I do have arthritis in that shoulder.

Hi there! Try to keep your belly button pulled in slightly as you inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth - this keeps your abdominal muscles engaged. If the breathing is too confusing, the most important thing is to get the movements down and then add the breathing in afterwards. Keep up the great work!

You are doing ok! Breathing in a Pilate routine is a bit different to do but with practice you will do aok! The important thing is to keep breathing! That is what is important! Keep moving with us too! See you soon! ❤️
