It was really annoying. I also completely agree with your assessment with the RDJ joke from Jimmy Kimmel. I couldn't quite put my finger on why it bugged me and you really nailed it for me. What on earth was the point? It's such a lazy joke, and most damning, it wasn't funny. And Al Pacino made me cringe, what on earth was that?? Overall though I thought it was a pretty good Oscars.
The In Memoriam bugged me a lot too. Those dancers are dancing their little hearts out and I'm thinking: a thousand worthy people have probably died, SHOW THEM IN STEAD!!!

Man i love dan’s passion for film. Thankful that he was able to turn what was meant to simply be a summary video into an enthusiastic look at film in 2023. Here’s to another great movie-going year in 2024
Lupita's presentation of Da'Vine was just so beautiful. I loved how she mentioned her grandma's glasses that was a soft moment for a great actress that is Da'Vine.
Dan had it absolutely right here. In Memoriam should be somber, not flashy. The dancing honestly came across as a parody. I'm old enough that I remember "The Running Man" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in that film - a satire of our media consumption more than 35 years ago now - they had a dance number to remember their fallen Stalkers. The In Memoriam needs to go back to what it was when I was a kid: A black screen with white text names and a photo. Maybe - MAYBE - a short snippet of an iconic performance (Like Michael Gambon as Dumbledore, for example). But stop making it a show-within-a-show.
OH MY GOD, THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE IN MEMORIAM!!!! it is absolutely INFURIATING each and every year when they do them and how do they NOT UNDERSTAND that you play a nice song and full screen of everyone who's passed away and THAT'S IT. HOW,👏HARD👏IS👏THAT?!
@@colleen4ever If they don't want to put in *too much* effort, they could do what the SAG Awards always do. Just play clips of the dead people featured on a black background with their names on the bottom of the screen. The songs playing during those In Memoriam segments are all instrumental. They could have someone singing if they don't want to have an instrumental song. They just shouldn't focus on the singer or singers. I thought that last year's In Memoriam was a step in the right direction. This year's In Memoriam was the worst since the In Memoriam slideshow from a few years ago. 😒
My moments of bliss were Godzilla winning VFX and Zone of Interest winning Sound. Well, and “I’m Just Ken.” It made me so happy to see the cast come out to perform with Ryan. He’s got Shang-Chi and the Doctor for his backup dancers.
Also the announcers Ryan and Emily have a stunt man movie releasing soon so it just felt like a tie in. Still a worthy shout out. Hopefully we'll see progress one day and stunts will get a major award show category.
It felt as like they were saying "well, we know that even though everybody wants a stunt performance award, we're not getting it any time soon for some reason, but hey, we appreciate you, so here's a 15 second applause...."
Ryan Gosling may not be the Best Supporting Actor winner but he won everyone's heart in that room and around the world for pulling off a miracle with that "I'm Just Ken" performance, easily one of the greatest performances in Oscar history! So happy to see Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen performing with him and Mark Ronson, what a remarkable collaboration 🙌
I'll say this too, RDJ - fantastic actor, not gonna complain he won. But I feel like a dozen guys could've played that role, and it would've been fine. How many actors could actually pull off Ken like Gosling, did?
Per Al Pacino: “There seems to be some controversy about my not mentioning every film by name last night before announcing the best picture award. I just want to be clear it was not my intention to omit them, rather a choice by the producers not to have them said again since they were highlighted individually throughout the ceremony,” he said in a statement. “I was honored to be a part of the evening and chose to follow the way they wished for this award to be presented.”
Can't believe so many people didnt realize this from the moment it happened. I knew exactly why it was done like this because it was just done in the same night with Best Original Song. Why people were so confused is beyond me.
still definitely an odd way to present it with pacino, he just didn't make it very clear even with that knowledge. His delivery was just off because he is too damn old
@marcochen9117 I totally agree, even if they asked him not to read the nominees, he should have punctuated the winner better, with "and the Oscar goes to" or something!
I don't mind it. Obviously it's personal preference, but I would have found it funny as an ex "addict" myself. I look back at my drug fueled days as a comedy and a learning experience, being able to joke about it is like looking back at how much I've grown and how dumb but experimental I was back then.
I'm so obsessed how Al Pacino announced the winner, it couldn't have been more anti climatic than it actually is. Bro came to the stage, say a few words in a drunken way, didn't bother to introduce the nominees first, opened the envelope, "My eyes see Oppenheimer", music started as he was about the say the producer's name, and he said "What happened?" My god, I love that man 😂😂
Thank you for pointing out Pacino didn't announce the nominees which is the traditional format & may have impacted on the initially tentative response to his naming the winner of best film.
I cannot understand how the academy continues to get away with making a joke of animated films EVERY YEAR. Asking if they let their children vote on that category is so disrespectful.
Dan Murrell, for me, is the most important voice in movie and TV reviews. As soon as I woke up and saw the winners, I remembered his Oscar predictions and couldn’t wait to see this video.
Another thing I didn't like about the "In Memoriam" section is that they clumped a whole bunch of names together at the end. The two that stuck out to me were Treat Williams and Burt Young. Burt Young was nominated for an Oscar! Why didn't he get a clip? And Treat Williams was a notable actor in his day and came close to getting nominated! I didn't think being included in the fine print was enough to honor him.
If I had one recommendation to the producers of the Academy award ceremonies, it would be this… Your main audience is the television audience. Not the in-house audience in the auditorium. That’s why I think all focus should be given to clips of the movie, snippets of individual performances, a little bit of cinematic background, as to why these particular technical categories are so important to the filmmaking process. In other words, use the ceremony as a way of reach out to a captive audience, and bring them into the process by showing them the cinema elements that are being celebrated instead of the onstage elements that don’t have the same impact as they would to those in the auditorium
Actually, is that assumption true? No offence intended to you or others mentioning points like that, but when a showrunner is appointed, who is their priority audience: the people in the room or the millions watching from afar? This is something that kinda comes up in many facets of Oscars discussions, because I don't think the answer is weighted towards the latter as much as people initially think: at the end of the day these are just astoundingly promoted inner-industry awards, voted by industry members for industry members, so why should the priority for framing inherently not be on those industry members sitting in the room? IDK, I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it myself, and suspect it's a tightrope the Academy struggles with.
The In Memoriam this year was probably the worst I have ever seen and there have been some bad ones. Showing the screens from far away so you could barely see them and constantly moving the screens to a different area on the stage was stupid. Then having dancers in front of the screens distract from what this segment was. It was like the actors that passed away were an afterthought and the performance in the foreground was the main attraction. It was beyond terrible and disrespectful.
Honestly one of the best Oscar shows Ive seen. It was very entertaining and Im happy with all the winners. I personally disagree with most of your criticisms but always love to see your input Dan!
The performance of I’m Just Ken is what I was expecting out of the RRR performance last year, but what a letdown that was in scale and the simple scenography. I was afraid that they’d do something similarly disappointing for I’m Just Ken. THIS IS HOW you do a live performance at the Oscars. It had scale, it was fun, filled with energy, it was silly, entertaining, it was everything! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
This is why we can't have nice things or fun, shout out to Yoko, being 91 is precious. The short was inspired by a song shared between John Lennon and her. The short wasn't based on a group of people's hardships or injustices happening right in front of us.
Dan: "Why is there a dog?" That was me yesterday, keep in mind that not everyone knows the current film references. I was very much confused about that dog clapping and I'm thankful I chose to watch this video of your Oscars breakdown. So only now I'm aware that Dog is from "Anatomy of a Fall", thanks
One trend I'm seeing with the Oscars is that genre films are finally seeing some recognition give the bias against them and Poor Things wins shows this.
Best Oscars in a while That being said…that stunt thing felt so phony. If it ends up not being a category after this year that’s gonna be very frustrating
Hearing the "happy mothers day yoko" while watching this video scared me so bad. I had to immediately check my calendar and make sure that i didnt miss it😂
I was super impressed by the telecast. It kept moving at a good pace and I think there were consistent funny and sincere moments throughout. I really don’t know what else you could expect from the Oscar’s.
That joke about Robert Downey Jr. wasn't the best but I gave props to RDJ for handling it like a champ. You just know that he could've slapped Kimmel on stage if he really wanted too, take notes Will Smith 😂
Kimmel trying to be funny, but it didn't work for me at least, maybe a real comedian would've made something funny of it, not Kimmel, it sounded bad/negative and out of its place.
It was a pretty weak (as in not that hurtful) joke. Will Smith (who was a jerk, don't get me wrong) stood up for his wife who was very insecure about her alopecia. RDJ made the choice to do coke. Completely different. Also, Kimmel is bigger, so RDJ would never walk up to him anyway, just like Will Smith wouldn't have walked up to The Rock instead of Chris Rock.

Oh yes, the MESSY In Memoriam. Please: No dancers just one singer, and camera on the screen the whole time so we can read the names and see the faces of the dearly departed.
Chuckle chuckle chuckle that was the 2nd slap in 2021 that nobody talked about. So they gave her an honorary one instead to make up for it. The look on Diane Warren's face when billie eilish won for no time to die was thunderous. Warren has worked for people like cher, cher is Warren's best friend and awarded her the honorary Oscar and Warren's response was about effing time.
WHY is she nominated every friggin' year? Save one or two, her songs are snooze-o-ramas...imho. I don't get it. People in the industry must truly love her
yeah it shows in some scenes... still incredible though. It had a much better story and The Creator... but I still think The creator got robbed for what the category is about
@user-fd7nl9xj6 same. I loved both movies but the creator looked better. We need to acknowledge that vfx wasn't just Godzilla himself, but a lot of the scenes on the ships and boats.
I personally love the previous winners announcing all the acting nominees. If they go back to clips then they should devote as much time as they did this year for them. I’m just happy that they figured out the timing without cutting too many speeches short.
One of the things I haven't seen mentioned is the connection between Rita Moreno and America Ferrera. Rita played America's grandmother on "Ugly Betty."
Is it just me or the show is actually a bit faster? And I mean that as a good thing because it didn't feel rushed nor it did feel dragged either, all the winners have given a solid time for their acceptance speech. It's like a perfectly paced movie. It was probably the only time where I didn't check my watch to see how long the show has been going. This year is easily a great ceremony especially giving back the traditions of five actors introducing each of the nominees 🙌
What the Director of American fiction said during his acceptance speech is the strategy that every early stage of venture capitalist and Angel investor uses. But those smaller movies don’t sell toys so, they’re gonna keep making $200M flops.
Someone needs to do an investigation into what Scorsese and/or DiCaprio do to piss off Hollywood because "Killer..." was an amazing movie and it winning nothing and them and their projects constantly coming up empty handed says something. I mean I could see Scorsese and DeNiro seething in their seats the whole ceremony as they saw the inevitable transpire. Lily should've been nominated for Best Supporting. She might've won.
LOVED: Twins vs Batman (Michelle Pfeiffer was in the room!? Get her in the bit too!); Nicolas Cage's comic delivery in his tribute to Paul Giammati. We need to see Nic in more comedies (again)
For the frustrations of the In Memoriam section, I'm really glad they started with that clip from Navalny. Best Documentary is an award that often goes to stories about painful, real world situations, which we watch and forget. I'm glad that painful conclusion to his story was acknowledged.
I got 19/23 right was most surprised by Emma Stone's win even though it's what I predicted. Favorite moments were I'm Just Ken, speech after 20 Days in Mariupol won and hearing the Godzilla theme music for their win. Great night for movie lovers
Anybody who think lily Gladstone was robbed didn't understand the job emma stone had to do in poor things. Emma stone made poor things worked. If Emma stone wasn't as good as she was in poor things the movie would have failed
I agree with your assessment of Stone’s performance. The anguish is the oh-too-real knowledge that she will get many more Oscar-contender leading roles & Gladstone has far fewer available in the foreseeable commercial culture. LG is worthy of so much more than a supporting actress role & award option. 😢
Dan, thank you, you expressed EXACTLY, and I do mean EXACTLY the thoughts and opinions that I had as I was watching the show. And you keep doing that, so thank you for being a public voice of reason.
I really appreciated your insights/rant regarding War is Over. A disappointing move for the academy, and I feel like they might just get away with it because it’s an often overlooked category for most. Felt like the voters didn’t care either.
This is how I like to watch the Oscars. There is no world in which I could bring myself to watch that show about millionaires congratulating other millionaires, so thank you for doing so and giving a good run-down.

John Mulaney randomly recapping movie plots is a classic bit of his. He’s done it for The Fugitive, Back to the Future, and a few others I’m drawing a blank on right now!
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory as well!
@@haveaniceday.productions THATS RIGHT. “His name is Grandpa George and he doesn’t have a single line in the movie.”

I'm so glad you mentioned the In Memoriam thing. I was sitting there going "Wait, why aren't they actually showing the names? I can't even see that guy? Why is it moving all around??" It was really annoying.
"And my eyes see Oppenheimer?" He read it like a question lmao
There is something weirdly poetic about that line I kinda dig it
The In Memoriam bugged me a lot too. Those dancers are dancing their little hearts out and I'm thinking: a thousand worthy people have probably died, SHOW THEM IN STEAD!!!
@@leannebrown02 Was he drunk, or stoned, or maybe both? What was that man DOING up there?!
I think it was an act. He trolled the moonlight la la land incident since we all felt after emma's win that history will repeat itself....

If anyone has any doubt about John Mulaney hosting the Oscars, pls watch the Oscars Governors awards he hosted couple weeks back… basically an audition.
Was he good at it? Why didn’t they just give it to him instead of Kimmel ?
@@NormaLilia24 JM's perfectly capable to host but I think Kimmel is thee go-to host on ABC I suppose. I think they might have signed him on to do a few years he's done the last few.
I'd love to see John Mulaney or Ariana DeBose to do it. Of course we all know John is great but so was Ariana when she hosted the Tonys so I'm hoping the Academy considers her too as the host
JM makes my skin crawl. For my part, I wouldn’t watch anything he fronted. He is mean in vibe: an oldist & a blatant shamer (both pre- & post-recovery).
Man i love dan’s passion for film. Thankful that he was able to turn what was meant to simply be a summary video into an enthusiastic look at film in 2023. Here’s to another great movie-going year in 2024
I was so thrilled for Godzilla Minus One, my favorite movie of the year. Loved the Batman bit, I couldn't stop laughing for that 30 seconds.
Lupita's presentation of Da'Vine was just so beautiful. I loved how she mentioned her grandma's glasses that was a soft moment for a great actress that is Da'Vine.
Yes! I'm glad she won. She was terrific as Mary Lamb. 😊❤
The clips from the show in this video to give context are so important-RUclips YOU BETTER NOT TAKE DOWN
Dan had it absolutely right here.
Running Man has aged scarily well.
SAG Awards this year was an example of exactly what the in memoriam segment should be
OH MY GOD, THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE IN MEMORIAM!!!! it is absolutely INFURIATING each and every year when they do them and how do they NOT UNDERSTAND that you play a nice song and full screen of everyone who's passed away and THAT'S IT. HOW,👏HARD👏IS👏THAT?!
They should take their example from TCM, they do it right.
What? Translate please.
My moments of bliss were Godzilla winning VFX and Zone of Interest winning Sound.
Well, and “I’m Just Ken.” It made me so happy to see the cast come out to perform with Ryan. He’s got Shang-Chi and the Doctor for his backup dancers.
The stunt performers acknowledgement not announcing that as a category was definitely odd. When watching with people, we all said “seriously?”
Same, I was like, are they gonna announce the category even though it's not a category for this year? Then it's straight up just a shout out.
@@yeskev Yes thats definitely a factor, but still super odd to be like "we appreciate you, just not enough to give you your own category"
Best stunts is an impossible category, but I love the acknowledgment they did this year
Ryan Gosling may not be the Best Supporting Actor winner but he won everyone's heart in that room and around the world for pulling off a miracle with that "I'm Just Ken" performance, easily one of the greatest performances in Oscar history! So happy to see Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen performing with him and Mark Ronson, what a remarkable collaboration 🙌
Yeah, but tomorrow no one will remember who won the hearts, but who won the award.
@@danielp1189I disagree. I feel some people who see I am Just Ken will wish it won.
I'll say this too, RDJ - fantastic actor, not gonna complain he won.
But I feel like a dozen guys could've played that role, and it would've been fine.
How many actors could actually pull off Ken like Gosling, did?
@@natalieb3766that’s not the point
Am I the *only* person who doesn't like "I'm just Ken"?
@@-Olea-yeah that was the only part that felt missing.
The RDJ drug joke is soooo... idek, like isn't the room filled with people who are secretly addicts? The industry isn't exactly "clean"
And he's been clean for almost 20 years.
@@VesnaLukic-h8w Oh I'm not shading RDJ
I don't mind it. Obviously it's personal preference, but I would have found it funny as an ex "addict" myself. I look back at my drug fueled days as a comedy and a learning experience, being able to joke about it is like looking back at how much I've grown and how dumb but experimental I was back then.
@@_jolie_ I know but I was thinking about that joke. It's getting really old.
@@VesnaLukic-h8w definitely a low hanging fruit joke.
I'm so obsessed how Al Pacino announced the winner, it couldn't have been more anti climatic than it actually is. Bro came to the stage, say a few words in a drunken way, didn't bother to introduce the nominees first, opened the envelope, "My eyes see Oppenheimer", music started as he was about the say the producer's name, and he said "What happened?"
My god, I love that man 😂😂
Reminded me of when Sir Lawrence delivered Best Picture in 1984. Just "And the Oscar goes to... Amadeus." Well, brevity is the soul of wit.
A lot of people in that room voted for him in Scent of a Woman. They created the "whaterever embarassing f'd up thing I do I'm golden" monster.
I’m seeing.. Hoo-ahh?
Good for him tbh! It's such "old guy too tired for this shit and wants to go home now" energy XD
Thank you, Dan about the Memorial segment! In my house, we were so upset how they keep messing this up! TCM channel does it the right way!
Lily would’ve deserved it in any other year. But this year Emma Stone was the CLEAR winner and she deserved it. So happy.
@@edwardhoptrough9933 they get viewership money from tv so I assume that the audience at home should be considered quite a lot
And NO MORE KIMMEL!!!!
I saw that and I was like "What...the...hell?"
Honestly one of the best Oscar shows Ive seen. It was very entertaining and Im happy with all the winners. I personally disagree with most of your criticisms but always love to see your input Dan!
You must be kidding!!! Kimmel is the worst!!
The problem with awards is that only one person can win. A lot of people are deserving to win.
They should just have John Mulaney and Nick Cage do the whole show.
I'm glad you called out the cynical BS behind 'War Is Over'. It speaks volumes that their victory speech was so empty.
Wonder what the Zone team was thinking at that time, hahahah. At least the Zone team did so much better.
This is why we can't have nice things or fun, shout out to Yoko, being 91 is precious. The short was inspired by a song shared between John Lennon and her. The short wasn't based on a group of people's hardships or injustices happening right in front of us.
I completely agree with you, but to be fair, Sean Ono Lennon is not going to be overly open-minded about his parents.
Dan: "Why is there a dog?"
That was me yesterday, keep in mind that not everyone knows the current film references. I was very much confused about that dog clapping and I'm thankful I chose to watch this video of your Oscars breakdown. So only now I'm aware that Dog is from "Anatomy of a Fall", thanks
Jimmy Kimmel mentioned early on that he was the dog from Anatomy of a Fall.
One trend I'm seeing with the Oscars is that genre films are finally seeing some recognition give the bias against them and Poor Things wins shows this.
One famous actor said that he did what everybody did--he voted for his friends. I do think a lot of the Oscars are voted on that way.
The “I’m just Ken” performance is up there with “Blame Canada” for me… one of the best I’ve seen on the Oscars. So good.
That song should have won Oscar
Best Oscars in a while
That being said…that stunt thing felt so phony. If it ends up not being a category after this year that’s gonna be very frustrating
Hearing the "happy mothers day yoko" while watching this video scared me so bad. I had to immediately check my calendar and make sure that i didnt miss it😂
So happy “Godzilla Minus One” won Best Visual Effects, and “Zone of Interest” won for Sound.
I was super impressed by the telecast. It kept moving at a good pace and I think there were consistent funny and sincere moments throughout. I really don’t know what else you could expect from the Oscar’s.
How about a different host?
Hmm, dan didnt even notice how rdj and emma ignored asian presenters and basically snatched away the trophy without acknowledging their presence...
I'm sorry, but I'll remember "I'm just Ken!" most of all! such a very fun moment!

Godzilla has more Oscars than Diane Warren 💀
Chuckle chuckle chuckle that was the 2nd slap in 2021 that nobody talked about. So they gave her an honorary one instead to make up for it. The look on Diane Warren's face when billie eilish won for no time to die was thunderous. Warren has worked for people like cher, cher is Warren's best friend and awarded her the honorary Oscar and Warren's response was about effing time.
She has an honorary one!
WHY is she nominated every friggin' year? Save one or two, her songs are snooze-o-ramas...imho.
I don't get it.
People in the industry must truly love her
I think the audience were more shocked that Al didnt bother reading first the Best Picture nominees.
He wasnt meant to. Same thing with Best Original Song.
Unbelievably, only 35 people are involved in all visual effects in "Godzilla Minus One"
yeah it shows in some scenes... still incredible though.
Zone of Interest director's speech was historical and he's probably blacklisted now.
Godzilla minus 1 winning best visual effects was incredible to see
sadly it should have been Creator...
And that Godzilla didn't arrive to accept the award was anticlimactic, but one can't have it all.
Appreciated the past winner introductions. Part of the magic of Oscars. Clips are everywhere.
I am too agree with you about that nonsense joke about that LEGENDARY RDJ. He deserves the BEST on everything❤❤❤.
I know I'm in the minority but my favorite performance by far for lead actress was Annette Bening. I think she was incredible in the role.

You want to know what else is sad, the Oscar’s own RUclips page still hasn’t uploaded Johnathan Glazer’s acceptance speech
The win I wanted to see most was American Fiction taking adapted screenplay so I was hyped to see it happen
RDJ should have said at the end, take a breath then said....."I am Ironman"
I was happy to see Ncuti Gatwa back for I'm Just Ken as well.
This year is easily a great ceremony especially giving back the traditions of five actors introducing each of the nominees 🙌
giving it a 3 and a half hour timeslot instead of a three hour timeslot probably helped.
I feel like starting the ceremony an hour earlier actually made the ceremony feel shorter.
It was actually 14 minutes shorter than last year’s Oscars.
The 5 past winners thing really made it feel so slow
@@AllTheArtsyI did miss the clips.
I think it was the best summing up of the ceremony :) Dan is zebest, as usual
Dan, remember that, last year, the MOST FUN SONG EVER actually Won! “RRR”’s NAATU NAATU!
The Sandra Hüller joke was also not really OK. For an actress that had been in 2 nominated best picture movies!
LOVED: Twins vs Batman (Michelle Pfeiffer was in the room!? Get her in the bit too!); Nicolas Cage's comic delivery in his tribute to Paul Giammati. We need to see Nic in more comedies (again)
I believe Michelle Pfieffer was scheduled to be on the show but had to bow out at the last minute.
Nicolas Cage got the note that you can still be fun to watch but also authentic.
I was ever so slightly disappointed that Cillian Murphy did not continue the Batman bit
Fantastic wrap up of the Oscars. I love Dan's passion for movies!
For the frustrations of the In Memoriam section, I'm really glad they started with that clip from Navalny. Best Documentary is an award that often goes to stories about painful, real world situations, which we watch and forget. I'm glad that painful conclusion to his story was acknowledged.

No mention of the John Cena bit? Absolute highlight of the night.
I agree with you about John Mulaney! He would make an AMAZING Oscars host!
