I saw this Chick tour with Gary. That night he unleashed this monster and the whole concert Chick stepped aside and gave the stage to Gary. Before the concert Gary gave a masters class to about 5 drummers in the area including myself. No one had ever heard of Gary Novak, but that all changed!!!
Nice… saw this group as well… blistering show and to think at this time I think Gary was only like 23/24 years old. Ridiculous!
Andrew the look on your face during and especially after Gary’s solo is absolutely classic! He’s a great player! Even Vinnie Coliauta once commented on how great Gary is! I love it. Huge jazz and jazz fusion fan!
Phenomenal Tim! WOW
@@AndrewRooneyDrums @7:00mins do we have a bass player in here'' lol, its u dont realize he is playing a 18'' inch kick drum with no hole no muffling or deading other then a power-stroke P3 head for the batter side,, so it sounds huge , his hole kit wide open lots of sustain wash from the cymbals and snare ,. you can play a 18 inch kick if you know how to tune it low ,. as we see hear its obviously a advantage having a smaller kit and again sitting very low ,.. your not really gonna sit that low are you? playing a 22 inch kick ,, really its why not dominate the drum kit and shorten small-en everything down as novak did sitting low is a advantage so is a small kit,, SO- for you to personally advance if your not going to work on rudiments and there applications you might want to consider tuning and set up and how the masters set up,.. its common in jazz to play a18inch kick ,. did you notice that even tho noves kick sounds a little like a basketball its still sum what low he has both heads taken way down ,. so it actually almost sounds like a rock kit in a jazz setting ,. flow-vack has the dynamics the ghost notes the intensity the burning single strokes
and on and on,, he is a master :) cheers :)
@@AndrewRooneyDrums ya @10:50 he is adding in the 2 kick drums the double peddle ,. so its your doing triplets between the hands and feet your just adding in the left foot as well ,. vinnie does that one a lot ,, noves putting it up to a epic speed ,. again wide open jazz fusion set up lots of ring and sustain ,. you can do the same lick tho just use the hi-hat instead of the double peddle its a extra rinckle into triplet fills lol
Wow.. I got to see them on this tour. We didn't know who the lineup was when we went in. We all thought it was Sean Reinert of Cynic at first. We then realized it was Gary. The whole band killed it. Andrew you would be amazed how may metal and especially extreme metal drummers follow the Jazz Drummer seen. As a touring drummer in my day, I got to know a lot of other drummers and anytime we heard about a jazz show anywhere near us we were there! Great pick!!
That’s actually now topped my list of best ever use of double kick hand-foot combinations. At it’s zenith it sounded like a hurricane.
Nice to see you reacting to Gary Novak, he is a tremendous player
It's nearly one big-ass roll
I never knew Tomas Haake played with Chick Corea. And yes, those Recording Customs are Mt. Rushmore drums.
Ha ha! Andy dude… as I was just watching this video, the first thing I said to myself was “look at Gary’s left hand!”, and a few seconds later you paused your reaction to comment on his left hand… too funny. Gary is a beast. I took my fiancé at the time to see this band and I have to say the entire band was incredible - but Gary in particular was unbelievable!! Dave Weckl left huge shoes to fill, but Gary was more than up for the task. Thanks for reacting to this gem of a performance (RIP Chick)
Did you had Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bill Stewart and Chad Wackerman on the channel?
Didn't know who Gary Novak was, when I was invited to go see a Chick corea concert at an intimate club in hickory North Carolina back in the early 90s. It was an evening of music that I will never forget. The technicality of the players was off the charts, but Gary was just beyond belief and actually stole the show. It wasn't till 30 years later, while watching a Chick corea video on youtube, that I recognized that drummer again. What a privilege to have seen these cats play that night. And Gary Novak is just astonishing to behold in a live setting!
This is total next level playing
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Hi,. i have invented the HOLLOW drum stick and am , marching over hear now' cheers :)
Loooove Gary's playing. I first heard him on Allan Holdsworth's "Sixteen Men of Tain" album. For a bonus, check out Alanis Morrisette's Woodstock '99 set, guess who's playing drums...
11:16 - yeah, I heard every word you said. Loud and clear. 🤯😄
HAHAHA
Love your t-shirt Vol 4 originally was called Snowblind like Paranoid was going to be called War Pigs changed because of the Vietnam War.
That was terrific. Love the “conversation” between the instruments. Like physicists down at the pub. Also the very funky solo. Great track. Thanks for sharing this.
Since I’m not familiar with Jazz or Chick, I’ve never heard of Gary. But holy crap Batman, this dude is a freight train. A one man force of nature. I’ve never heard jazz or fusion played with so much power. Thanks for sharing Andrew!
Novak has a frantic, chaotic style. But controlled. Lightning in a bottle
Nailed it
@@AndrewRooneyDrums hi so i was able to invent the hollow drum stick and marching styles over hear now cheers :)
One of the greats
Astounding, I was amazed by how he kept switching the grip on his left hand. Unreal.
One word ' WOW' ok make that two words 'DOUBLE WOW'
Amazing stuff from Gary. Wow!
A monster on the kit dynamics abound Have followed him for years Love Chick Electirk band . Also seen the band with Dave Weckl I am a Jazz-Rock Fusion lover Return to Forever What can you say one of my all time favorites What a treat watching this Have a great 😃👍😃 day my friend
Awesome
Just saw you on Facebook playing Boston…sub’d on here immediately 🤘🏻
Thank you! 🙏
EPIC -thanks Andrew, I believe this was Chick's Elektric Band II -with Eric Marienthal on sax, Jimmy Earl on bass & Mike Miller on guitar
Unbelievable
What an absolute monster, no doubt Chick Corea was surrounded by the best of the best. Great video, great comments and I can't wait for the next video to drop!! Should definitely make a reaction on Antonio Sanchez!! Greetings from Mexico and happy holidays to everyone
He does a great Antonio Sanchez review, his solo on “The Gathering Sky”, Pat Metheny of course!!!
Andrews face is priceless as is mine whilst watching WTF! This 1 of the best vids Andrew has put up, I'm gobsmacked and I know nothing about jazz but the flow of this guy is beyond most of us mere mortals, keep chopping x
There’s a reason Gary Novak is one of Gergo Borlai’s heros.
Awesome pick. When you spoke about jazz being jarring for some people, I was waiting for the gif from the office (American version) where Andrea and Dwight are speaking of their disdain for jazz, and Andrea says "why can't they just play the right notes"? First thing I thought of when you said that. Thanks for this and maybe you can incorporate that gif in the future!
If Gary Novak is not on one's Short List , one wonders what the criteria ought to be .
The Chick Corea/Allan Holdsworth talent pool has produced just such Next Level artists , routinely .
Mind blowing players
Your so right......Lots of people don't really understand Jazz/...........Takes a special ear to process it............Been listening to jaqz for years
You might be interested in Rayford Griffin when he was with Jean-Luc Ponty.
I'll check him out!
Chick Corea is an absolute master at building this conversation between instrumentist. Just check how he looks at his partners.
he knew the camera was rolling some musicians go to another level when they know the camera is recording
This is next level
I saw chick Wayne shorter, herbie Hancock , John mc Laughlin , Zawinul, Al foster on drums and many others with miles Davis in 91, la Villette Paris, legends…
you should check out echoes by fools brew the drummer is so good
this sounds like Billy Cobham (hope i spelt the correct) with mahavishnu orchestra, a must to check out,
amazing vids again thanks.
YES!
This is mind blowing
A black Yamaha RC would be nice to own; you could put one of Gadd's signature snares with the kit, he's got a few! Seen photos of Novak playing Sonor and later DW, think he's with Gretsch these days. I've said before I miss Vinnie Colautia playing Yamaha and Zildjian, there's something about that combination that a lot of drummers have tried at one point or another.
Vinnie Colaiuta 1984 Zijdjian Days
It's funny, I was listening to Alanis Morrissette this morning on the radio and thought what a great replacement for Taylor Hawkins. Great solo!
I'm surprised he was in that band. Versatile guy
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Tasty work on that album.
Have you reacted to the dave dicenso in modern drummer one?
Yup!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I'll look it up
Puts Tommy Aldridge in perspective.
I saw him with one of the greatest guitar players Allan Holdsworth
let me show you around my drum he said with his sticks
I get Buddy Rich vibes
Do a reaction on Moritz mueller
the CCEB II was a great collection of players that just didn't have quite the chemistry of the first band with Weckl, Gambale, & Patitucci
Fantastic, this guy is not from planet earth
Holy shit, this guy is other-worldly good. OK, farther on in listening, I think that he's probably up there with Danny Carey, certainly with the best.
As a guitar player, I never could get into jazz much. Had I been a drummer I'd have went further for sure. There's stuff I like, but much of the vocabulary does nothing for me. Rhythm is everything, though. I love the drums.
naw, that is a Maple Custom, the ones with the gold lugs, I think the snare is a Recording Custom Steel????????
This guy actually reminds me a little of Zach Hill during the fast parts. He really feels it and gets in the zone. i love his sense of time and creative decisions.
Yup amazing
Zach and Gergo remind of him tho... Gary is the OG goat
Actually he missed some at the end. This is "music " for 0,00000001% of people... that are musiscians... for the rest of the world population, I really don't know... I myself are a pro-musiscian.
