    PLEASE READ! The explanation I give for why we are all moving to USBC is maybe the worst explanation of anything ever in the history of things being explained. Here is a news article that talks about how and why it actually happened: www.cnn.com/2023/09/13/tech/iphone-15-usb-c-charging/index.html (to be fair it's right"ish" and hopefully you don't come here for the exacting accuracy anyway)

      You were right, the EU sued Apple due to the changes in lightening cables and always forcing people to change, including removing the audio jack on phones.
      Secondary reason is to cut down on the amount of cables being created, to save the environment and global warming factors!
      Great video Jen from an EU viewer x

      @@JoyfulLivingwithJenLefforge yes, close! I'll add extra pedantry and say that EU didn't mandate that the whole world change, the legislation only applies to the EU -- but the ripple effect is global because no one is going to embark on the kind of manufacturing logistics that makes specific charging only for the EU market. Love a niche packing deep dive video. :)

For my wired headphones I have adapters too, all stashed neatly in a mesh pouch, already to go in my personal item bag.

    One very small clarification. All of the USB connection types actually have letter designations. That can be helpful to keep them organized in your head. What we know in the U.S. as regular USB is actually USB-A. there is also a USB-B. It's that big square connector that used to be used on printers mostly. Then USB-C. Otherwise, very good explanation of a fairly obscure topic.

    • @JoyfulLivingwithJenLefforge
      @JoyfulLivingwithJenLefforge  6 месяцев назад +13

      YES I almost said USB-A but nobody says that and I thought if I just said USB and showed it but of course you're correct! And thank you! It's obscure but is literally going to affect everyone traveling this summer so I figured we might as well talk about it, right?

As someone who is struggling to help their family make the switches from USB, to USB-C and other related things, I appreciate you. I have both types… ones to convert USB-C into USB-A and others to convert USB-A into USB-C. They come in handy. I also use magnetic heads (don’t need to keep taking them out of the charging port) and magnetic head cables. I can use just one cable to charge pretty much all devices. Makes attaching the phone in the car simple. I have a short cable permanently in the USB-A port. The magnetic head attaches to the phone quickly.

    I have an excel spreadsheet with all my electronics listed in Column A, and the cord they need to charge in Column B. Separated out by a couple of blank lines, I list all my cords in Column A, and their connections in Column B. I have color coded each type of connection, so when I pack the things I am taking for a trip, I make sure I have at least one of the same color coded cords - no having to check the ends of cords to match to each item I will need to charge. Every one of my charge cords - we all have dozens I'm sure, since just about every item you buy comes with it's own charge cord - are labeled with the item it goes with. When packing, for example, I may be taking my rechargeable makeup mirror, my mini photo printer, my little mp3 player. No need to take all three cords, just one if they are all the same - such as all USB-C, or all Micro B.
    In addition to having items that have a USB-C, I also have some older items that need either micro-B or mini-B. I keep one of each cord these four cords - USB-C to USB-C, USB to USB-C, USB to Micro B, USS to Mini B - in my tech bag. I have a power brick that has both USB and USB-C plugs. Finally, I have a couple of USB female to USB-C dongles, because my USB-Micro B and USB-mini B cords both have a USB connection, and if I'm ever somewhere that there is no USB connection available, I have a USB female-USB-C dongle to cover that scenario. The 'main' use cords (USB to USB-C and USB-C to USB-C) I usually have two of each, so I can charge multiple things at once.

    I have some devices that are USB-A and others that are USB-C (and an iPod Classic which is the original 30pin style). I use Last Cable. One end is USB-A, and the other end has a magnetic head. When you buy the cable, it comes with three heads… one lightning, one USB-C and one Mini USB-C. You can buy extra of the heads. You just insert the head into the charging port on your device… and then you can use the one cable charge them all! I do have a charging set that folds up and can charge my iPhone, AirPods and Apple Watch all at the same time. It comes with a power plug (Australian, because that’s where I bought it) and the cable is USB-C to USB-C. I have bought an adaptor that allows me to change a USB-C into a USB-A… and different adaptor that does the reverse (USB-A to USB-C) so I can use any USB port. I also have a few power plug adaptors which allows me to plug into any power point around the world. I do have one that also has multiple USB ports on it too (great for Disney Cruises where you don’t always have a USB port near the bed… )

Just wanted to mention that Best Buy will take all those extra cords and recycle them properly. That helped when I made the switch to iPhone 15/USB-C. I have to admit I was way too excited when I was able to declutter all my lightening cables. Also, nowadays 10,000mAh power banks don't charge our phones as many times as they used to so we should keep that in mind for our different needs. I know I bought a little 5,000mAh anker one that is the size of a lipstick and it used to charge my old phone once and now it only does like 65%. Hi jen in order to help have a good source for usb cable and power adapters i use anker brand for all usb cables they have all cable types. For iphone usb-a to lighting usb-a to usb c or usb-c usb-c cables the usb c system allows for the fastest charging speeds.

    Funny story…our chargers and cables kept going missing at our cottage. People would come and stay and then pack them up with their stuff and take them home. So we decided to label them with “Linda and Trevor’s cottage” on them. We had friends visit and they texted us after their stay to say “we accidentally took your charger home. We know it’s yours because it has your name on it “. 🤦‍♀️

    a) the background you definitely didn’t arrange specifically as a background is so beautiful;
    b) this video was super helpful in a surprising way;
    c) life has been dealing a tough hand over here lately, too, and your videos bring lots of comfort and good vibes 🙏❤️

    Thanks Jen so much. I searched colors for the organizer and got pink which is my favorite color for $5.75! Early B-day present for me. ♥ Would love to find sanitizing wipes for electronics too to go in there, especially with my Hashimoto's.

    Helpful video, Jen. We have Samsung phones which have used USB-C for a long time (even as Apple resisted until the UK and EU lawsuits forced the change). But our power banks take Micro USB, and many of our older power cords have Micro USB connectors. The solution for us was ordering Micro USB to USB-C Adapters from Amazon. They are teeny little dongles and you can get multi-packs of them for about $6. We keep several of them in each of our tech travel bags so we're ready for whatever, as well as with each of our power banks.

    Really, make sure all your plugs / devices like flat iron / dryer are "dual voltage" 110 and 220 -- then no converter is nescessary. Most if not all Anker plugs are dual. Vast number of Chi flat iron's are dual.

    Hey Jen. You just showed up on my feed. I just bought an iPhone 15 and have the devices you have. Thanks for all the great ideas. I have to go to the hospital a lot so a bag already packed is great. I’m also going to fit out my house with the correct cords.
    I just moved and it has become very confusing what I need in which room. I’m in a motorized wheelchair. Which makes it difficult sometimes to transfer to get the correct cords. Thank You again. I’m Gen X will subscribe.

    I went through this when I started vlogging and traveling and omg it was rocket science! I basically have the same equipment except add in GoPros, battery chargers and accessories etc so I have that all organized for travel but then I have to actually carry my gear when working too so your video helped me to think about organizing my gear out in the field cause sometimes I really need a tech assistant! 😂😂😂
    Anyway, great vlog my friend! ❤

    Do you pack a power strip type thing? (Not a full strip, but a multi-plug device) They are so bulky, but I feel essential if a room has limited outlets.
    My new car only has usb-C, so that’s been a whole thing 😮🤦‍♀️😂

    Here's my thing - R2D2 can go onto ANY ship in the Star Wars universe and plug in to get information with no adapter. Fits every time. I can't get my iPhone to charge unless I sift through 3-5 different cables, try to plug it in, look frantic, turn it upside , try again. And , heaven forbid that I have to charge my Kindle - that's a micro USB. So the message is - the one thing we should steal from the Empire is standardization! If you see me staring out of the airplane window at the sea of clouds (still beautiful) while the person in the seat next to me talks about Bitcoin, it's because I brought the wrong cable.

    They sued Apple because they were basically the only ones not using USB-C already. Those of us with Android have already been using USB-C for quite a while now. It was mostly about lightning cables bc Apple likes to have their own stuff so you have to buy Apple brand.
