This man complains he's tired of the "normal guy ends up being the villain after the twist" trope. Let me remind you how we all felt when we found out Lysanderoth was the bad guy. That hurt. We loved that character and it was an absolute betrayal.
Well he is a master of deception
I know right? He has always been the good guy who wants to cleanse the world from impurities. So his evil guy reveal just comes off as forced.
I'd like to offer a counterpoint: It works with Lysanderoth because he was a party member we grew attached to, instead of some forgettable secondary character.
If it was a movie about the game, he could have ended up as just that one party member who gets one or two lines of foreshadowing before disappearing into the background in favor of focusing on Archibald to make his death more tragic. In a game, it works, since you get to enjoy playing them and get bits of personality from skits and pre, mid and post battle dialogue.
Case in point, a lot of people actually want to know about Ophelia.
@@jrg87 well yeah you get attached to them through gameplay and hours of quests
@@jamesgratz4771 Is... this supposed to be an argument against what I said, or just restating the main point? Cause I'm a little confused.
Here's me not realising the train wreck of a movie Planes wasn't actually released by Pixar, getting increasingly worried you hadn't mentioned it and thinking you'd placed it in your top picks.
Glad I wasn’t the only one
I actually forgot it existed until you mentioned it.
So did I but who released it
Same here! I kept nervously anticipating it.

Not often a child actor still enjoys his work once he grows up. I m glad you still like Up.
Lol
Holy shit !
OMG so cute lol
Omg this comment is underrated
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaan.
There is only one reason why Up is my favorite Pixar movie: it’s because Carl, the old man, reminds me a lot of my grandfather who basically raised me. The whole theme with flying things like blimps and airplanes also struck me hard in that film because my grandfather was a pilot, used to fly seaplanes and flew for the civil air patrol. When he grew older, especially around the time I was born, he used to fly model airplanes and he would take me out to the airstrip, and I would sit on a picnic table and eat lunch as I watched all the planes go by.
TLDR: Up makes me cry every time I watch it as I’m thinking of my grandfather and immediately calling him up on the phone to catch up with him.
dewittttttt
Humanity 100
after the opening sequence, the best parts of Up are really just Carl, Russel, and Doug. I really wish the whole movie was focused on just them. they didn't need a villain at all
To be completely honest, I don't remember shit about UP except for the first 7min. I watched that first 7 minutes probably more than 100 times.
sorry to be so dramatic, but your comment really got me because my grandfather was a pilot as well. he wasn't jaded like Carl, after my nana died, he was obviously sad but he still embraced us grandkids and his family in a really warm, hopeful way. he's gone now, but reading your story was a really nice thing for me today. anyway, I hope you and your grandfather's relationship remains healthy and wholesome
I would love to see one of these with the studio ghibli movies
Like so Sung can see!

#1 Spirited Away
Agreed
YES
"It's Johnson Smith! The CEO at the beginning of the movie, remember!? Betcha didn't expect him to be the bad guy!"
They can't expect the villain's identity if they already forgot about the guy in the first place ;)
"My machinations lay undetected for years"
It was HIS MISTAKE!
I'd argue Monsters Inc was on the verge of doing that too, but no one complains. I mean it wasn't a stretch so that's probably why.
@@GermaphobeMusic ***Looks of dissapointedness intensify***
The moment in Up that always always gets me isn't Ellie's death, it's later in the movie when Carl is looking through her book and finds the note thanking him for the adventure and to 'go have a new one'. Gets me every time 😭😭😭
ikr i was bawling in the theater at that part it was so unexpected
Becca R Same. Everyone goes on about the first 5 minutes of the film, but that reveal in her book broke me in the theatres. Its my favourite scene in the film.
@@MrChannelforwatching Everyone seems to have a different part that got them. My friends was the final shot with house at the falls. Mine was when the house is falling out of site. Russel says sorry about his house and he says “You know kid, it's just a house.” That line just completely summed up his growth.
It's the house on the falls at the end that does it for me.
@@byronsenior6499 That’s actually my second favourite part, then the first 5 minutes. The house ending up on the falls at the end was just the cherry on top of an amazing film.
The older brother in Onward was 100% made for Jack Black but Chris Pratt was walking by the casting room at Disney after doing re-re-re-takes for Guardians 3 so they gave it to him to save on paperwork

Toy story 4 fucking sucked
@@joepho123
Toy Story 4 was a fine movie up until the last scene where you feel like you've been slapped across the face with betrayal
I watched recently and I still don’t know how to feel about it.
I missed Bo Peep in the third one so I was glad to see her again and her new development, while stark still made sense and that was the highlight for me. The way they handled the other broken toys/forky and the subtextual themes about disability could have been better. Forky had his moments that got me to care but I’m still on the fence about him. Woody was enjoyable despite being more unlikable. The pacing felt off because the toys were taking their time watching the subplots resolve while their friends were stalling the humans. The toys had way too much direct influence. Like speaking without their voice box to change the directions of the gps.
I really did have a good bit of fun with this one, but yeah it has a lot of problems.
I really liked Toy Story 4 but is definitely not for everyone, some people still see Toy Story 3 as the real ending
my only problem with soul is the very end, he finally accepts his death and is ready to move on while remembering how important his life was to him...And then they put him back in the real world.
He has a new appreciation for what life is. He now understands there's more to life than obsession. The movie is giving him the opportunity to live out that new found ideology
What you think is noob like unfortunately max. Soul is fantastic and is actually a fairly accurate depiction of the after life
Gefe man
@@lyranlover6904 sorry for the misunderstanding, I absolutely LOVE Soul, it's one of my all time favorites, thats my *only* problem, the art, story, characters, and overall flavor of the movie is incredible (the afterlife thing is debatable, though its a good one, but there are a lot of other ones, like the wheel of reincarnation and the norse valhalla)
People who say this just don't seem to realize how unbelievably hard it is, literally for everyone who dare tried, to convince #22 to go to earth and then to just miserably fail. 22 has been in the Great Before for thousands and thousands of years (he/she's the 22nd sould to have ever been created...let that sink in) only for a middle-aged man, who's so ordinary and someone who didn't even have any great achievement in life, to finally convince him/her to experience life . Of course they will give him a 2nd chance having seen the lengths that he did just to live once more.

Ratatouille is my favorite Pixar movie of all time, for one specific reason - Ego's monologue near the end. It genuinely elevates it from a kid's movie that adults can enjoy to a very beautiful movie with a lot of heart.
Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. That perfectly wrapped up the movie and hit me in the feels at the same time.
Have you ever worked in the kitchen? Ratatouille definitely needed all of the characters to show the chaos of what a kitchen is actually like
That's a funny question because he probably haven't, like, majority of people haven't worked in the kitchen so I suppose is better to explain why do u feel that way instead of asking that
@@adityamahajan1631 that’s kind of what DID happen. The kitchen staff all had introductions and lines but they were never supposed to contribute to plot very strongly. They’re pretty much glorified extras

Why do I feel like ratatouille is underrated?
I think my issue with Inside Out is that canonically the emotions aren’t actually Riley, they’re guardians that help guide her. Individually they don’t represent parts of Riley’s personality, so watching the film isn’t really Riley fighting with herself, it’s watching a bunch of characters fighting for control over Riley. So it almost feels like she’s a prop in her own story and not a fully developed character. Idk I still like it and I respect that it’s a hard topic to depict.
you put it into words man
ive never thought about it this way but you're totally right
I either don’t understand or I don’t agree lol. It’s because of their imbalances that Riley lashes out and gets depressed, they absolutely hold influence over her mind. It’s not that they are literally her, trying to control every thing she says or does, rather they’re her psyche, and whatever psyche is dominant in a person’s mind is what influences the things they do or believe at a given time. Everything Riley does is because of her psyche, so they are directly responsible for that, they just don’t have complete control over her movements and words.
@@emblemblade9245 that’s totally fair, I think that’s a good analysis. I think what I mean by “the emotions aren’t literally Riley” was that the big moral of the movie is that it’s important to acknowledge all your emotions and not push them away. If the emotions represent literal aspects of Riley, then them being out of whack represents Riley’s internal struggles and them learning to work together represents Riley learning how to handle her feelings and grow as a person. But because the emotions are canonically not Riley, that metaphor doesn’t really work as well for me? I’ll admit that saying that they want to ‘control’ Riley was maybe a little harsh (esp considering the deleted scene where Joy treats Riley like a broken machine for not doing what she wants), but I guess it just kinda feels like the story becomes the emotions needing to learn how to work together to help Riley because they’re an important part of her actions, which kinda removes Riley’s internal struggle from being a character arc to just A Thing that’s happening to her that the emotions need to solve.
I’m probably being nitpicky. I don’t want to fight, I swear I do actually like this movie. I think there’s some really clever stuff there, I’ve even written a paper for school on the emotional psychology of Inside Out. I just think they could’ve gone farther with it.
lotofmalarkey right, I think I get what you’re saying. We only see Riley’s reactions based on what the emotions are doing in the moment, so it doesn’t seem like she has much agency in her decisions, or is aware of why she’s doing them. The end of the movie has Joy learn its ok to express sadness instead of shutting it away, but when we see Riley’s actions, coming home to cry and reveal her struggles to her parents, it feels more spontaneous and from Riley’s perspective it looks like a decision she made from a different influence than Joy’s lesson. Is that kind of what you mean? Makes sense to me if that’s the case. I think I was just so touched by the ending (as someone who’s been through depression) that I wasn’t too bothered by it, and in addition there aren’t so many Riley scenes that it feels like a glaring issue. But that’s just me!
Merida just deserved a better film. Such a fun character.
Agreed she's a good character.... Everything around her was just bad sadly :/
She's a damn cookie cutter disney princess. And I'm not talking about the 1990s Princesses. I'm talking about the Snow White, Aurora, Cinderella shit where they aren't interesting.

Absolutely nothing about it felt like a redo of the first.
Not to defend its flaws but wtf kind of take is that?
Also the villain name complaint is stupid because her full name, first to last, is never heard or seen written sequentially, so it’s all just a non-subtle easter egg. Also who the fuck uses the word “endeavor” enough to spot it in wordplay?
@@emblemblade9245 it can be an easter egg, but even with a different name, the story was loaded with cliches that made it feel very uninspired and subpar to what it could have been. It was an okay movie but it was so much less than it could be given how far Pixar has come. With the surface level political messages and the cramming of filler characters and common tropes just made it feel phoned in for cash rather than a passion project. The best aspect of the movie was the animation by far, because that showed detail and care. I don't know if it was rushed, but it didn't feel like they gave the time to keep the soul of the first.

WALL-E came at a really weird time in my life. I wouldn't admit it then, but I honestly kinda identified with this lonely 700 year old robot with a personality disorder. He did his meager job well, but he had fun with it and always dreamed of something more. Despite his blundering he was indeed destined for greatness because he greeted everything that came his way with optimism, compassion, and curiosity. He even won the heart of the sophisticated and driven robo-gal of his dreams. He gave me hope for my own life. Hope that some day destiny would break my loneliness and that I'd meet that challenge with open and capable arms... Even if those arms are a bit clumsy at times.

To be less vague- I struggle with ADHD. I mean well, but am often over-eager and mess things up. Because of this ppl get frustrated with me until they get to know me, much like when Wall-E first met Eve. My favorite quote from this video is "Oh you're supposed to feel sad? Who cares. Nice try Inside Out."
Idk, that ending where she returns hits hard even if it wasn't relatable. Its magic. But pretty mediocre movie. (comparing to pixar's other movies)
@@Marnige exactly how I felt. it's fun but there's so much unrealised potential in that concept and the opportunity is squandered. Also Toy Story 4 sucks make a tv special/miniseries instead.
@@Marnige as a person whos struggled with depression suicide attempts and anxiety, Inside Out really hits hard. The idea that you get to point where you CAN NOT be happy and suddenly anger and fear are running the show hits so close to home. Yes there is a lot of meanderocrity but i feel like it doesn't waste time the way he thinks it does.
That's how I felt in Inside Out, but also UP. I don't get why the beginning touches so many people.
@@Rayen015 meanderocrity?! Fantastic work, sums it up perfectly. It’s mediocre AND meanders where it shouldn’t or may be seen as uninteresting or too derivative. But it may not be all bad though. It’s not always a bad thing to meander. Not really a waste of time to some people. I’m glad you enjoyed it, and yet another Pixar film touched you.
Brave has the most "out of nowhere" plot ever
Anyone else want him to rank all the Ghibli movies?
No...
but yes
hell yeah
I’m gonna bet right now that his number one is either Princess Mononoke or Spirited Away.
Heck yeah
Yes
There only being 23 Pixar movies really puts into perspective how long animation takes
23 movies in 25 years is actually kinda nuts
@@TheMaestroso wow almost a movie a year and I think at least half of them were pretty good
I mean, 23 movies in what, 23 years? That takes fucking talent, and honesty, that’s fucking fast.
Its the complete opposite, they churned movies out so fast and lots of mediocre. People that were so young simply remember the newer stuff so fondly and somehow think thats legit to think they were well made films
How long GOOD animation takes
Sungwon has GINORMOUS balls to put some of the movies that low, you gotta respect that
i think brave is the reverse of most pixar films, in that instead of a "okay start, bad/blah middle, fantastic ending" it was a "fantastic start, bad/blah middle, okay ending". like it does give you a really interesting character introduction, the relationship between the mother and daughter, and then the bear stuff happens and the movie is just unsaveable. it kind of makes it worse as a film because its setting the bar high and failing to deliver, as opposed to an okay start and finishing powerfully
I love the invention of the word “middleocrity” because the word mediocre actually stems from being stuck in the middle. It originally meant halfway up a mountain, and that’s 100% what shitty middle of a movie meandering feels like.
Second acts are the hardest to write, man. When you start hiking up that mountain, you feel inspired. You have so many characters and themes and settings to play with. When you finally reach the top, you feel relieved. You’ve done your best and you truly feel accomplished. But when you’re halfway up that mountain, you feel exhausted and indecisive. “Is this really the best route to take? How about this one? Maybe I should change a few things. Whoops, I just created the world’s biggest plot hole.”
@@nicolasleroux5302 Making big holes on mountains is really dangerous. You might fall in.
@@misteryA555 What makes a good subplot?
"Pixar can do endings" I never thought about it like that, but you're right. It seems like a lot of modern Pixar movies know what message they want to send ergo they know how they want the movie to end, but they don't spend as much time working on getting to that point.
old pixar knew how to not waste time...the worst pixar film from 1995-2010 is what probably cars a film meant to be slow...every other film did not waste my time..and i loved cars too so...
i noticed that one trend makes pixar movies worse these days, they waste more time on irrelevant things, where as the old ones were tidy, nicely packaged, and with little filler
@@randomcat5262 coco was solid but even it wasted my time...same for soul...neither had full stories to tell..they needed a b plot...inside out almost got there but it too needed more...coco is the closest to a fully story they told imo since mid 2010...instead we get middle filler that is like whatever
Agreed, I've regularly found that media tends to struggle with endings imo, and Pixar tends to do much better with them than average. I also agree that the meandering middleocrity of Pixar is definitely a thing, but I guess I maybe don't find it to detract as much for me. Inside Out and Soul are my favs even though they do both have some definite filler and wacky shenanigans that don't add much value imo. Anyway yeah, I'm glad he put it like that, cuz I don't think I'd quite recognized that yet either.
what i didn't like about the monster's inc. prequel was that it completely forgot that in the first movie mike and sully definitely talked about being childhood friends and met way before college
That was just one litte plot hole
Yea I liked how he was like " you've been jealous of my looks since the 3rd grade" or something like that
The director actually talked about this. He was fully aware of that plot hole when making the film, but let the plot hole exist as he felt it was better for the story.
Monsters University shouldn’t exist.
@@spoopyscaryskelebones3846 I overall enjoyed it. The games and ending felt good inside
Cars 3 -
"I saw it on an airplane, and went... 'Huh. I didn't feel like my time was wasted.'"
It's these kind of sweet, layered burns that keep me engaged.
cars 1 is so underrated on this list..its such a great kids film...maybe if he understood route 66 old steve mcqueen films style of the hot shot learning to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the old and forgotten small town charm to heal his soul that has become corrupted in the spotlight and also the way it ends he would rank it higher..i have seen it so many times..its still great ....mcqueen is so hateable in the first act then you love him at the end..he just changed totally....which is why they never needed a sequel and if they did do one make it what cars 3 was sorta about...just better obviously...mcqueen is the star..wtf is cars 2 about?
Cars has a really good and sweet lesson, but I feel like I only really cared about a few parts of the movie. I wouldn’t rate it at the bottom, and I definitely give credit to the parts that deserve it, but it’s not really a movie I ever felt like watching again, unlike many other Pixar movies, if that makes sense
The concept of "Middleocrity" makes so much sense. I have much different opinions on some of these films, but even the ones I love this is so true. The start and end are SO amazing, but the middle becomes noise. It's interesting that the end has redeemed some of these movies so much for me. I feel like I will see them in another light when I next rewatch.
Ok, Brave is overall pretty shit but in it's defense: I think everything up until the part where her mum turns into a bear was actually really great. The archery scene and the fight with her mother afterwards was amazing and the rest of the film could have been so good.
I agree the movie enticed me until the mother turned into a bear and that's when everything devolved.
ME MOTHER'S A BEAR
Same. I literally forget that Brave was the movie where the mom turns into a bear because its such a violent drop in quality after that moment
honestly, that just adds to the frustration with me, the second and third acts are so disastrous it makes you wonder how much great of a movie it could've been if the quality of the first act was maintained and developed further upon
while the movie is slapping you in the face with european cut of brother bear
It felt like a mother daughter movie. And as someone who has issues with their mom, I was fighting back tears towards the end. I feel like a lot of people who aren't a mother or daughter wouldn't really understand. But it's been a while sine I've watched it and I'll wait for the internet to shit all over my opinion.
Finally, someone who understands the masterpiece that is Cars 2
Don’t understand why it is so hated i really love it
Beginning: "I hope you get mad cuz I don't care."
Middle: "I feel so nice now."
Climax: "Fuck you."
Conclusion: "Thank you all."
Not many plots can both come full circle and pull off a twist ending like that. Structured yet dynamic. 10/10

@@GhostWriter520 Except he's wrong in this instance, the "antics" in the middle is the entirety of the main character exploring the afterlife which has a lot of touching moments and character development. I can respect his criticism for Soul in that I was also way more interested in the real life plot and it honestly could have been JUST about that, but not so with Coco. The whole film is about being remembered and forgiveness, and the afterlife was necessary and never seemed silly to me in respect to the world it sets up.

Yeah I was so disappointed with Incredibles 2. I like that they gave Elastigirl a more prominent role but the kids got shafted - I wanted them to have their own arcs. And it has such a lame twist villain.
Yeah. I like the new heroes, some of them were undeeded but whatever. Also I think Mr.Incredible got finna shafted hard, the kids had..some action when they got to the boat but tbh thats it. It felt like 14 years for something that was only worth maybe 3.
The twist villain was so obvious it was painful
It was also very preachy, I felt like every other scene was just "girl power" nonsense
To me, it feels like Brad Bird didn't really have any ideas for how to continue the story, which is why it took so long. Eventually he just kinda made the first movie again, only not as good.
Experiments in Insanity I don’t understand how he didn’t think to do a timejump. It just... that’s where all the story is. It’s baffling. Superheroes were already back at the end of the first movie. So the sequel is about superheroes coming back? Show me what the kids are doing as young adults. That’s where all the interesting stuff is. How do you go from all the complex family dynamics between all of the characters in the first movie to just sidelining everyone except Helen in the sequel? It just doesn’t make any sense. Who does Jack Jack grow up to be like as a person? It’s like Brad Bird thought of slapstick sequences with a baby and couldn’t help himself and made a worse movie just so he could have those scenes in it.
I loved the A Bug's Life comments. I had the exact same reaction you did a few months ago. As a kid, I was obsessed with the movie. I hadn't watched it for about ten years, though. I rewatched it a few months ago and I was dumbfounded with how tight the structure was and how well it managed to balance THAT many characters (the weakest characters being the secondary ant characters, but with the circus group, they pulled off something almost no one could today).

IIRC from the DVDs they originally had a "once upon a time, monsters and humans lived together" opening that they quite rightly cut. But in the final cut there's no exposition, no "guy from our world" they have to explain it to, no "as you know, Mike, we are monsters and we scare children"...
