I have a tank with mostly Bumblebee Cichlids. I isolated a female that was holding. She ended up with 70 fry! I had an old 55 gal and raised them in there until I found homes for them. A lot of fun! Thanks for all the videos, I love the fish and love your enthusiasm!

@@lisagalloway6230 Thd mother holds the eggs / babies for about 3 weeks. Toward the end I put the mother into a separate tank. She will start sputting out the babies when they are ready. Once done I moved the mother back to the main tank. She will usually not attack her own fry.
@@Kap-ge2pt We left it be, the ones we assume are its parents had been very protective of the fry. It has been growing up nice and big now its not much of a fry anymore.
We're a African cichlids breeding family. I started with a Mbuna show tank and my 10 yld son wanted to catch and raise some frys.........and then it started. My son is now 12 yld, he breed, raise and sell fish as a buisness. We now have 11 aquariums and my show tank now just have a few breeding groups. My son now breed and sell: Pseudotropeus saulosi Yellow labs White labs sp. NKhali Pseudotropeus maingano Yellow tail acei Afra lion sanga Zebra obliquiden Tropheus bemba orange flame We have a group of wild caught tropheus red rainbow on the way from Africa that hopefully will become a nice breeding group. Anyway I understand what you mean about becoming more work then a hobby lol
I normally just swap them for fish food. I grow them out for up to 8 weeks. I got £60 worth of food for the last batch. I didn't count them but there was roughly 65/75 fry . I do keep some back for my self its nice to have some fish that was raised in your tanks. Nice video thanks 🙂👍🏻

My Haplochromis phytophagus m that has been consistently breeding with an OB peacock f. They have produced approximately 7 fry that have so far survived in the same tank as parents. Of the 7, 2 are jet black, 3 are vertically striped & the other 2 are pale w no markings as of yet. The survivors are still quite small, 1/4 inch - 1/2. Can't wait till they grow up. I know they are from the 2 adult fish because they are the only fish in that tank. I'll post pics of the survivors when they get bigger. Love your vids. Stay well & prosper.
Yes two days ago i've witnessed my female Lake Malawi Cichlid laying eggs and one of my other Cichlid whom of which i thought was also a female was circling her eggs and she picked them back up in her mouth....Now i have a 75 gallon Cichlid Community Tank with Opaline Gouramis in there (only 2) but over 20 Cichlids in my Community, So my question is; Was it ok that i took my Holding Female out into another tank by herself(20gallons)?

i have 2 sunshine breeders running but my strawberry peacock breeded with my lemon jake female in my 55, i didnt want hybrids, but now i have 2 colors of fry. i call them strawberry lemonade
I have my 1st holding female. I am going to let her go to term. She is isolated in her own tank now. 3 Questions. 1. Do you continue to do water changes while while she is holding? If so, how often and how much? 2. I am using a small canister filter (tank already cycled) with a filter sock over the intake. It doesn't seem to move a lot of water out the exhaust port, but I don't know what is good for the African fry. Will this be ok? 3. Keep lights on or off? I've raised American Cichlids many times and I changed nothing on the way I did things in the tank, but it seems African Cichlids are a bit more sensitive to things. Thanks...

So I have a tank with 3 cichlids one bumblebee and two Demanson's for about 6 months now. I was not trying to breed them but it happened and at the moment I’ve only seen one fry and was wondering if it would be a good idea to separate the mom and fry from the dad and bumblebee. Hey Rochelle! I have had my new 200L (51G) mbuna tank for a couple of months now. I have an fx4 filter and plenty of rocks. I have 17 fish. My lightly coloured cobalt blue zebra seems to be the tank boss and is chasing others around a fair bit. Do I need more fish? Does he need a time out in a separate hospital tank? Add even more rocks? What could be the reason for why my peacock breeding pair have stopped breeding? There are other fish in my tank breeding, water is great, plenty of water changes etc. Just not sure why this specific pair have stopped breeding. The female has also grown quite a lot. Unless my memory is failing in my old age (definite possibility!), I don't think you've ever done a video on how you pack and ship - and get the fish ready as well. Us fish geeks love to see the inner workings of the fish industry. Right now my Sewellia loaches are breeding like rabbits - I plan on spreading them to all my tanks. I don't try to breed my fish - I just try to make them happy.

Nice video! I have a small question about breeding. I have one aquarium that hold only female cichlid but now one Mbuna seem to be holding, can female lay unfertilized egg and they hold them even of there is no male or it mean that one of my female is a male in disguise?
Hi Olivier, It's possible for females to hold unfertilized eggs. I guess they get bored without the males lol. You'll know after 3 days. That's usually how long it takes for the unfertilized eggs to start to decay and either be swallowed by the mother, or spit out and eaten by her friends. If it's been more than that, chances are that you have a male in disguise :)

Since I was not sure if it was too late or not I put her old lover back with her in hope he would maybe fertilized the eggs if it was still possible but obviously it did not work. Normally the female might be able to have eggs in how long after such a thing happen? Thank again for your help, I reaply love cichlid but I still have so much to learn. They are a constant learning project :-)
Hi Sarah, Have you tried giving them away on social media? Or on Craigslist (or the website that's active in your region) ? Maybe check with a specialized fish store 😉

It would be kinder to cull (gasp!😲) them, but I couldn't do that! I have two 65gal tanks, and several 10s. I'll keep as many as I can and stop saving the babies from the tanks.
@@sarahbrome5564 Don't worry about it. Before hand, when you're chatting with the people, ask them questions about the tank they will put them in. You're allowed to refuse to sell to someone ;-) What I've noticed as well, is that when you have something to give away, people won't just take one. They'll take them in schools... meaning that you will be able to clear out your tanks quicker.

@@schmidt28117 she already spit them out. The mother, father and babies are in a 65 gallon tank, no other fish. Both parents seem very protective.

Depends on your fish.
If they're adults, at least 2 inches
If they're juvies, you can add them in a lot younger
