I’ve never kept Cichlids but hope to soon. I found your video very interesting and well presented. Thankyou for making and sharing this nice production.
I'm glad you dealt with the issue of bastardized species. One African Cichlid specialist store in the states had an online discussion with his clients and most of them concluded that it was OK to cross the species, not dispose of them as the "humane" thing to do and resell them. Probably the most aggrieved area, more so than the Mbunas, is with the Aulnocara (Peacocks) species. It's very rare to find a classic Red Shoulder Peacock in good color these days, but there are plenty of nondescript blue ones out there with made up names. Private sellers try to enhance sales by offering "new" species that really aren't. It drives me nuts.
Hi Pal, Thanks for your comment. Hybridization is a subject not talked about enough and not taken seriously enough. I often get new clients who show me their "beautiful" tank that's full of hybrids. When I tell them, they always have a disappointed look on their faces. They don't have "real" african cichlids :(
Amazing and informative video. Thank you for explaining about Mbunas so well. I am about to embark on a journey of keeping african cichlids for the first time and I will greatly benefit from this. :)
Nice video! Loads of information and well delivered. Switched to African cichlids about a year ago and I love them, so much to learn about them.. awesome fish!
Your videos are so helpful I just got African cichlids as a present for my 75 aquarium I mostly only had catfish types and loaches so this is my first time keeping cichlids so I’m just reading and looking up on RUclips just trying to learn as much as I can

Wow what an amazing video so informative great information of all the videos on RUclips that I’ve seen yours are the best You can tell that you love cichlids African cichlids that is in me and you really seem to know your stuff
Hi, Hope you are fine. I am from India.I love Mbunas and fond of your RUclips Channel. I have a 60 gallons tank and have Jalo Reef(3 "), Mengano(3.5"), Cobue(4"), Flavus(3.5"), Demasoni(3.5"), Albino Greshakei (4"),Neon Spot(3"), Thumbi West (4") ,Kenyii (3.5") each .All are male.My tank's age is 60 days.Since last few days Albino dominates in tank. And since last two days I noticed Demasoni and Flavus are badly injured, then I separated the two and kept them in a small tank. But when I again introduce them to the large tank, the others are attacking the two and again I kept them in small tank. I am using all Seachem products in my tank, changing water in every week, using one top filter, one Hang on back filter, and one Sponge filter since the very first day. Please help me how I can get rid of this agression. I can't find the cause. Thanking you , Subha

Thank you for this video. I have been watching a lot of videos on how to start a cichlids tank. I'm moving in to the cichlids world from planted tanks. Your videos are most helpful than the other videos. I'm in Toronto. I'm going to checkout your website. I hope you ship to Toronto.
I have a few hybrids in my tank but not worried about it because i dont sell or give away my fish...and they look fine to me...still colourful and interesting.
I have yellow lab, red zebra, yellow tail acei , afra cobue, Pseudotropheus perspicax and rusty's in the tank. My tank boss is a large Hongi and I think they could be his ...or they are the offspring of the lone afra cobue...my yellow lab females seem to be the ones who have the hybrid fry....the hybrid fry are dark blue with darker stripes..there's probably 5 or 6 hybrid fry in there - maybe more as I have a lot of rocks. I have never sold or given any away. I'm a bit of a softy. If a fry is smart enough to survive then I will try and give it a good life. I still get fry that look pure as well...I just enjoy them all.
This is first video I have viewed from your channel ... You are quite informative, I get it when you say that as an aquarium hobbyist it's up to us to keep the species pure I would like to know your opinion on hybrid fishes like parrot fish and flowerhorn . Thank you
They're not my favorite, but I honestly don't mind it as much as if somebody does random mixes in their tanks and then tries to sell them off as pure breds. Parrots and Flowerhorns were professionally "created" in a controlled environment.
Thank you so much for sharing your information and experience! I’m trying to learn more about cichlids as most of what I know is on the planted side. (If I could make one suggestion that’s purely an aesthetic one: the music is lovely but could be turned down just a touch)

Dear Richelle, Thank you for your videos - I love them! I have two questions about aragonite substrate 1-2 or 2-3mm size: - Will mbunas be capable to sift it through their gills? - Is it ok to plant plants in this substrate?
I have 15 cichlids 55 gallons and only know what a few of them are. I want to get 5 more for over crowding but not sure. What did I get myself into! I lost 4 and replaced them to what I can expect to be aggression but I have never seen a fish kill another. I hear so many different things about keeping African cichlids not sure what to listen to. This video is really good and worth watching.
Thanks for your comment. I'm writing a blog as well to help get information out there. Most google searches turn up random forums from 10 years ago :P And yes, Mbunas have quite a temperament lol. With the information I gave you, you should be able to create a harmonious tank. Enjoy your cichlids!

@quebeccichlides I have a 90 gallon Cichlid tank and have a few questions. 1) I have 35 Mbunas, 1 Jewel and 1 Plecostomus. Is that going to be too many fish for my tank? 2) can I add some catfish, Peacocks and a Giraffe? 3) with this many fish how often should I change the water? I’ve been doing about a 30% change once a month. 4) Two weeks ago I added a dozen live plants. So far they’ve completely destroyed two of them. Should I give up on plants or will they eventually leave them alone? 5) I have a Rio 2500 submergible pump, I would like to know if you can recommend a battery back up that will keep my pump running in case power goes out when I’m not home? Thanks for your advice!!!
Can you Please tell me the name of the type of Mbuna at 3:25 in your video.. I have 2 of these but do not know the name of them.. Sometimes there will be fish listed as "Assorted African Cichlids" especially at the big box stores.. I really do not like buying from those places, but I have when their tanks and fish look healthy and well kept.. I just ordered some Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow Labs) from a very reputable breeder in Florida.. I have never purchased fish over the internet before, but I am giving it a shot..
Hello thats a nice set up.... had a query regarding mbunas.Since you are an expert... What are the reasons for sunken belly in mbunas....??they are eating but sunken belly not going... What can be done?? I feed my fish twice a day.....dont want to over feed and encounter issues... Would be great if you could advice...
I am new to your channel and so glad I found it. Your videos I have seen thus far are all awesome. I have been debating whether or not to go down this path. I only have space for a 30 gallon tank and I see a lot of conflicting info about Mbuna, Would you recommend the Universal Holey Rock as a good aquascape for them to help control aggression? I really like the look of that and I would also plan to add some individual rocks and/or caves with maybe a few artificial plants. I have never seen the hanging plants you reference but I love that idea. Your thoughts are very much welcome and appreciated.
I love this video, it is great. I gave it a thumbs up. 👍 I would like to help with the aquascape, the only problem however I have moved away from Aulonocara and went more towards Mbuna. But I might be doing another Aulonocara set up in the near future. I Subscribed to your awesome channel. The food I give to the Mbuna and Haplochromis is: Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Vegi Flakes. I have one question: What Brand of food do you give the Mbuna Cichlids? Thank you for sharing.
Thank you :) I'm currently working on my Hap video. I don't have a date for the upload yet as I only have the table of contents written down😂 (You gotta start somewhere) The Aulonocara video is already up. Check it out, it might inspire you 🤓 ruclips.net/video/jJCwX9FqfYg/видео.html
Hi Milan. That's a great idea for a future project. I noticed that I talk a lot about them throughout my videos. I too think that they should have their own spotlight like I did with the Labidochormis caeruleus. Here is a very short video I made last december of P. demasoni. I had a whole aquarium full. ruclips.net/video/xTJi5ywMhIk/видео.html
I love this brand of fish, I have a 65 gallon tall, with plenty of filtration and right now only have 1 small red parrot , will this cause a problem if I go with this Mbunas>> thanks.
nice video. only mistake is you show less fish but it doesnt harm the video a lot, as you present it nicely.what do you think about keeping only males or females as a way of reducing the aggressiveness
I don't think it's a mistake...just the way I make my videos.😉 Thank you for your criticism. Only females would be a boring aquarium and only males would, on the contrary, be extremely aggressive.
I have a pre-filter sponge on my canister intake it's like everything I put it on I haven't little particles floating but if I take it off my water becomes crystal clear I do keep the sponge clean I just don't understand what do you think I should do are condo World The Fan will get into the filter like I said that sponge is clean I just have particles floating around when it's on there when it's not my water is crystal clear
Great Video, Question, I have a mature mbuna 55 gallon tank with adults & 1 jack dempsey. How long do any new juvenile mbuna fish need to be at to safety add to tank?
Hi Michael, Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Every tank is different. If the fish are big, wait until your juvies are at least 2 inches long....even then, that might be cutting it short. This being said, this size will work for some and not for others. Add the fish in schools, move the decorations around and, most important, look at your tank. In the beginning, the fish will run after each other but if it doesn't stop and you think it's dangerous for your fry, move them back to the growing tank.
Richelle. I always enjoy your videos as you are very knowledgeable and informative. Also have to say that I’ve never heard a Latin identification with a French accent!!
Hi Jim. Thanks for your comment. That's why I write the names down when I say them, so we don't get lost in translation lol. I learned from the best here in Quebec. They didn't speak english so I learned all of the terms in french. Conveniently, french is closer to latin than english. Technically, I'm saying them right-ish :P
QuebecCichlides yes you are. I love it! I took French in high school and understand a bit still...I work for the NHL and hear a lot from the players who come from your part of Canada.
Well if ever you get in a conversation with the players about Cichlids, at least you'll be able to understand them from listening to me :D ... If ever you talk about cichlids to NHL players though, I hope you mention my store back from their hometown lol.
I answer all of that in my follow up video : ruclips.net/video/g2HX4rsFEwM/видео.html As for "which" fish to get, check out what's available locally. If you're from Canada, I can ship fish to you. Here is my stocklist : www.quebec-cichlides.com/livestock?cat=1 Send me an email with your address and I'll get you a quote : www.quebec-cichlides.com/contact-us Thank you
New to your channel and a new subscriber as well. This was one of the most informative videos I have seen in a long time. I am new to Cichlids and your info was very helpful. Right now I only have room for a 40 breeder. Any help you offer in what to stock and how many will be much appreciated. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos. Thanks in advance for the advice..
Hi John, welcome to the hobby :) If you liked Mbunas, check out my list. You can inspire yourself with it. I separated the different lakes and groups, making it easy to spot compatibility: : www.quebec-cichlides.com/livestock?cat=1
I have found all your videos so helpful. Im limited due to space but what would be better for yellow labs and maingano's... A 40 breeder or a 55? I know the 40 actually has more surface space while the 55 is taller. Which one do you think would be better? And how many can I stock in it? And last question... If they're juveniles, how long can I keep them in the tank before having to upgrade them to a larger tank? Thank you so much!

Would you mind sharing that breeder, I'm interested in getting a few of those
Guess it's a zebra convict
Hello thats a nice set up....
had a query regarding mbunas.Since you are an expert...
What are the reasons for sunken belly in mbunas....??they are eating but sunken belly not going...
What can be done?? I feed my fish twice a day.....dont want to over feed and encounter issues...
Would be great if you could advice...
That can either be
- unhealthy cheap food that doesn't fill them up.
- Age
- Females that breed a lot get skinny
- parasites due to poor water quality
I love when people love what they do for living
It's not always easy, but nothing worth while is 😁
Good job Richelle! :)
I own a group of tropheus canary cheek. They are an algea grazer from lake tang.
great video
I am new to your channel and so glad I found it. Your videos I have seen thus far are all awesome. I have been debating whether or not to go down this path. I only have space for a 30 gallon tank and I see a lot of conflicting info about Mbuna, Would you recommend the Universal Holey Rock as a good aquascape for them to help control aggression? I really like the look of that and I would also plan to add some individual rocks and/or caves with maybe a few artificial plants. I have never seen the hanging plants you reference but I love that idea. Your thoughts are very much welcome and appreciated.
Bitch never answered 😂
Merci pour les infos
Ça fait plaisir :) Merci pour votre commentaire.
I love this video, it is great. I gave it a thumbs up. 👍
I would like to help with the aquascape, the only problem however I have moved away from Aulonocara and went more towards Mbuna.
Thank you :)
I'm currently working on my Hap video.
I don't have a date for the upload yet as I only have the table of contents written down😂
(You gotta start somewhere)
The Aulonocara video is already up. Check it out, it might inspire you 🤓

Dopada mi se svaki tvoj video.Sve pohvale .Da li mogu da te zamolim da snimis video o Pseudotropgeus Demasonima? To su mi omiljene ribe

Just subbed nice info Thanks
Great video as always and u are gorgeous
I love this brand of fish, I have a 65 gallon tall, with plenty of filtration and right now only have 1 small red parrot , will this cause a problem if I go with this Mbunas>> thanks.
It's not the ideal mix. Their diets are so different.
@@QuebecCichlides thank you
nice video. only mistake is you show less fish but it doesnt harm the video a lot,
as you present it nicely.what do you think about keeping only males or females as a way of reducing the aggressiveness
Great Video,
Question, I have a mature mbuna 55 gallon tank with adults & 1 jack dempsey. How long do any new juvenile mbuna fish need to be at to safety add to tank?
Hi Michael,
Sorry it took so long to get back to you.
QuebecCichlides thanks 4 reply.
Unfortunately one juvenile was eaten. Ready for next time.
Is there a good coffee table book that has pictures and identifies the various cichlids? Currently my tank is primarily mbunas.
Cichlids press has some great books. Check out the video description, there are some links 😊
Back to nature Malawi cichlids is a great start
@@QuebecCichlides thank you 🐠
Well if ever you get in a conversation with the players about Cichlids, at least you'll be able to understand them from listening to me :D
... If ever you talk about cichlids to NHL players though, I hope you mention my store back from their hometown lol.
There are so many conflicting opinions online regarding tank size for african cichlids. what cichlid would be fine in a 38 gallon tank?
Hi Richelle,
What is the daily protein requirement for Mbuna, Peacock? My question includes herbivore, omnivore, carnivore daily protein requirement.

Nice information about that fish
Thank you. I'm glad you liked it.
Hi John, welcome to the hobby :)
If you liked Mbunas, check out my list. You can inspire yourself with it.
I separated the different lakes and groups, making it easy to spot compatibility: :

I have found all your videos so helpful. Im limited due to space but what would be better for yellow labs and maingano's... A 40 breeder or a 55? I know the 40 actually has more surface space while the 55 is taller. Which one do you think would be better? And how many can I stock in it? And last question... If they're juveniles, how long can I keep them in the tank before having to upgrade them to a larger tank? Thank you so much!
You mention raise pH with crushed coral, rocks, stones. So, should you avoid wood pieces? I hear wood lowers pH.
I just bought a yellow lab can i feed it pellets for goldfish?
