Richelle watching this video made me feel like I have died an went to Mbuna heaven where I met a cichlids Goddess.😁 I love your accent an the fluent pronunciation of some of these complex fish names. That French and Spanish similar pronunciations helps I guess. You are truly a wealth of Cichlids knowledge and your videos are spectacular, very informative and helpful for newbies like me to African cichlids. Thank you! Keep up the wonderful work and much success Rachelle!!!
I'm a total novice with 3 mixed cichlids in a 5 gal tank... The fish store guy recommended this and I soon found out how little either of us knew about these handsome fish! Have a 20 gal tank arriving soon and need to cycle and rehome them ASAP. I'm committed to getting this right but man... I have SO much respect for aquarium hobbyists now. Proper care is no joke! Thank you for all these videos. I'm cramming like it's the LSAT 😂
Oh man! That's crazy. You did good to get a bigger tanks but you might have problems with aggression because you have so little fish. I would add more fish and, if possible, upgrade to more than 20 gallons.
Another nice video with important advise for mbunas and always with your smile and atitude!!!I keep mbunas in my 3 tanks!!A 65 gallon community tank along with South American cichlids,Tanganyika and some non cichlids like silver dollars and silver sharks, some loaches!!!It has to do with the fish, the size, the age,the tank capacity, the water parameters, the filtration, what variety of food you feed them...if you put fish in same age and size you can make a community tank with awesome appeareance mixing different kinds that can respect each other and live well together and they can be active, happy and healthy!!But this can't work for anyone, you need knowledge, experience and luck!!!I keep 3 mbunas,8 peacocks-aulonocaras,4 gouramis and 1 silver shark in my 60 gallon tank and everything is fine,it worked also!!And in my 55 gallon tank I keep 19 mbunas,1 venustus,2 aulonocaras,1 surinam geophagus and 1 festae and they are like a family,a school-no bullying, all are healthy and active!!!We can try and see what happens, fish can be a surprise!!!Cheers!!!
I have one of those rare mixtures that has worked well for me. I have a 75 gallon tank with about 20 Mbunas and more hiding places than I have fish. There are 3 non Mbuna species that live with them and they have blended in well. One is a jewel cichlid from the same region, one is a Firemouth from central America and the other is a Red Devil from central America. I know that the Red Devil will make most of you cringe but I put him in last after the tank was well established and he has blended in nicely. He was just a baby when he was introduced and about average size to the rest of the fish. Sometimes it's more about the individual fish's temperament than it is the species so we'll have to see how it pans out in the long run. The other two went into the tank with the Mbunas when I first set it up about a year ago so they are like family members. As for the Red Devil, he has to get past my top 5 tank bosses before he can ever become a problem and he has a long way to go! I'm hoping by the time he gets significantly bigger than they are, that he has been in the tank long enough to view them as family members instead of competition or food. I'll have to keep a close eye on that. My Socolofi is currently the tank boss with my Johanni, my Maingano, my Auratus and my bumblebee to follow. All of them are very aggressive and can handle themselves against much larger fish. As for dieting, I give them a nice mixture of veggies and light protein. Then I feed my central Americans krill separately. My PH is around 7.8 and my water temperature is 78-80 degrees. They all seem happy but in case it doesn't work out in the long run I'll have your video to refer to!
Years ago my family had a 55 gal tank with random fish in it which included some cichlids mixed with community type fish. I’ve also seen people keep schooling fish with cichlids, perhaps its more fish dependent but it clearly works for some people.
Love my mbuna tank but after some years of keeping them bottom dwellers catfish loaches are not necessary.Sure you can keep them with mbuna but don't think they can live off of left overs! Many of times you have to feed them at night b/c mbuna are greedy and if they can see the food they will eat it all up before the bottom dwellers can their barbells on it. And if catfish get too hungry I have seen them attack my cichlids at night! So the bottom dwellers also add to bio-load too! But catfish are cool to keep as long as their needs are met. What i do now is add snails not just any snails nerite snails and an army of MTS snails. No longer have to feed at night and the snails take care of themselves with less bio-load. Great video.
Love watching your vids. I had a red devil pass away at 15 years old who I bred a few times. Tank was empty with just a plecostomous so I made it an mbuna mainly tank. I have 3 flamebacks in there too 1m2f. I have a small female Texan in there also she's only a dither so the bigger fish don't kill the small electric blues as they're tiny. I'll take her out in a few weeks. I didn't know about The frontosa not being compatible because I out a small one on and he's been fine so far. The rest are albino red cap zebras 2m1f, salousi 1m1f, and the other 2 look like jalo reef, they have yellow tails. Oh and 2 electric yellows .. All are doing well. I'd love the flamebacks to colour up more but not sure they will with the Texan there same sizes btw. And biggest fish in tank (3-4") the rest are between 1&2 inches. I bought them all small so they'd grow up together. All advice welcome!! @quebeccichlides
I have a mbuna that I rescued. (Pseudotropheus). I introduced it into a 40 gal. community tank of tetras. It has been successfully cohabiting for over six months. It has plenty of hiding spots and in some of which it has fortified. They mingle peacefully at feeding time and occasionally it will swim the black skirted tetras. Have I got lucky ?
I've kept my bumble been cichlids with a Bolivian ram and had some guramis with them with almost no fin rippidge. I've even kept peacock gudgeon and cherry barbs with them they did fine in tight schools but they where never small enough to fit in there mouth
I have set up only mbuna tank 30 gallon there are 9 of them small size. Two months still no mortality they are healthy with rocky hardscape and 7.4 ph level water and three times feeding a day and 7 days 30 percent water change
Like your recommendation for 10 mbuna per 30 gallon tank. Seems reasonable. Question: i have 2 Livingston Haps and they seem to be getting along so far in a 30 gallon tank with 5 mbunas. Fish are all less than 2in. Do you think that will continue to be the case as they grow?
Not at all. Livingstonii need a bigger tank to thrive. They will either get aggressive or lethargic because it's too small for them. When they get a little bigger, you might have to bring them back to the LFS to avoid them suffering from dwarfism
Have 75 gal with peacocks and Mbuna cichlids 7 in total and 1 tiger Oscar all fish are about 2 to 3 inch and have absolutely no problems in the tank with aggression
Looked at this video 3 times in one morning lol. So I have an 75 gallon mbuna tank that's housed by 6 ice blue zebra, 3 yellow tail acei, 2 ob red zebra, 1 chewere, 1 cobue, 1 yellow lab, 1 cobalt blue, 1 rusty and 1 red tail shark. My question is I seen a beautiful juvenile African cichlid in petsmart that they said is possibly a zebra but I'm 99% sure it's a dragon blood peacock and absolutely fell in love with it. Can I add it (just one) to my setup? Hopefully it'll work as I think its beautiful just not sure how compatible they are with mbuna
Salut !
Hi Rochelle. Thank you for great informative videos. I have a 40 gallon breeder with 8 yellow labs and 4 demasoni about 2-2.5 " size. . My fish keep hiding all the time and the only time I see them is when I put food in. Do you have any suggestion to fix this issue ? Do you recommend any dither fish ? TIA.
Love demasoni... Please next video is for tropheus they are like mbuna as well also tell me the sign about the male and female on them.. Love carnivorous. Nice information thank you..
Great video. I have a question please help me with your knowledge. I want an aquarium yellow labs, blue demasoni, and red peacock. The last one is compatible with the first 2? 🙏 for your help.
Hi great video. I am cycling a new 75G tank and will soon be adding Lake Malawi Cichlids. You said not to feed them blood worms. What should they be fed?
After viewing your video, I'd like to add some Yoyo loaches to my Mbuna tank. But I've read that Yoyo loaches like soft water, and Mbunas thrive in hard water. Is that an issue? Thank you.
I am setting up a 55 gallon tank with African Cichlids but I sure don't want to inappropriately mix non-compatible ones. So can Mbuna be mixed in with any species of Tanganyikans at all? If not, I won't, and so as to avoid unnecessary non- compatibility issues, which species would you recommend I mix in together with this in mind: My tank will have plenty of live plants, floaters, cave rocks (for hiding), oxygenated bubbles. Not to overcrowd either so does the 1" per gallon of fish rule of thumb apply to these african cichlids? I ask because in some youtube videos it seems like some people have an awful lot of cichlids in their tank...or is that the way to go with these fish? I want a nice variety of colored cichlids. I'm starting with small 1" to 1.25 " or 1.5'" max. May I also add: a Pleco and/or Cory catfish and/or snails? Lastly, may my Jack Dempsey Cichlid join the group? He's almost 2". I'm open to your suggestions as to what other species, if any will get along and not be attacked. Lastly, what variety of food do you recommend if I have a mix of picky eaters? PLEASE, I implore you to reply using my contact form at my web site: www.aquariumsbytr.com (I provide tank cleaning services here in New Jersey) as I most likely will NOT see your reply here on youtube. Thank you and be well and safe. Thomas
Hello, I am currently preparing a 75 gallon tank for Mbuna Cichlids. I would like to go with an all male group (no breeding) of juveniles (~3 inches). I’m looking for a good variety of color, and would also like your suggestions for a compatible tank cleaner (pleco). I would appreciate your suggestions! Also, enjoy your channel! You have a lot of passion for Cichlids! Thank you!
I have a 65 gallon aquarium I was going to get 4 yellow labs , 4 rustys and 4 chisumulae .... I’m afraid my tank is to small for more , do you disagree ? Also are those 3 types a good fit together ?
Hi, i realise i’m like 3 years too late… But i have a 30G that is all set up as a community tank but i wanna change. it’s 3 foot long. I wanna get 6/8 Mbunas, Yellow Labs, Zebras, Jonannii, Saulosi, Tangerine, Pindani etc, all juveniles, and then i’m moving out soon and wanna get a 55G 4 foot tank in my new house as it will be my own and not parents so more space and then when that tank is cycled move then over and get another 10 or so mbunas like Rustys and Acei and then a few more so as to not ruin the cycle, what are your thoughts on this? think for the few months i could deal with 6/8 to see if i get on with them before spending lots of a bigger tank and such x
I have a 55 gallon with 1 male 5" kenyi and 3 female 3 to 3.5". I want to add more fish. Can I add 2 inch fish? And what type do you recommend for this tank?
Hi! I have a 90 gallon Mbuna aquarium, with about twenty-five yellow labs, a few Zebras, a Dolfin (I know she's not an Mbuna) an ACI, and a full grown Bumble Bee. Strange mix, but they all kind of grew up together and work well! My question is, what is your opinion on adding a few 5 Bar Tretocephalus? I really love these fish, but I know they're from Tanganyika. You didn't mention them so I figured I would ask. Thank you so much for your videos! 💜
can you specify the type or names of fish that are compatible with mbuna, very detailed please hehehehe because on the website that you have, I don't think it's enough detail. thank you before
You mention in this video 8-10 cichlids per 30 gallons. But I’m another video you said 8-12. May I ask what you think the best for my 52 US Gallon tank with an fx4 filter would be? 15-20? Trying to keep the more peaceful end of mbunas in there with lots of rocks.
I have some mature 3-4 inch Mbunas in my tank currently. I want to add some additional Mbunas. Do I need to be careful adding smaller 1.5 inch Mbuna's? Would I have to add more mature Mbuna's?
I would add more, depending on the species you have and the look you're trying to achieve. Here is a video that might help :) ruclips.net/video/g2HX4rsFEwM/видео.html
Hey cichlid geek. Tried juvenile 16 trophious with 6 albino mbunas and went well for a while until the trophious started to die out as they got to 2.5 inches or so. I moved out the albino mbunas and only 6 trophious remain. Any advice..please help
🙂 I really like this a new African cichlid keeper help me I have mbuna I do have some peacocks some of my African cichlids is kind of mixed what others not showing with all them they are like I said I'm a new African cichlids keeper what's your advice with a mix tank like Mine
First getting into African cichlids did not know there is different types of mbunas not sure which ones is which all I know they get 5/ 6 inch with a fewl peacocks I'm not sure if I have females also but don't have no way to find out what do I really have is 60 gallon tank will be your advice local fish stores I know really not sure but by watching your videos it helps me the whole lot I do appreciate your videos I'm sure I have different types of other kind of African cichlids I'm sure I have different type of cichlids as well I just didn't know when I first started I didn't even know they get bigger then 6 and 7 inches
Hi I started small MBuna 40 gallon breeder for my son. I was wondering if we could add any Lake Tanganyika fish? Black Calvus? Tropheus Duboisi? We currently have 10 small MBUNA Demasoni, yellow lab, OB Peacock.
I like how you put it. I had the idea to write one called "what to do when your fish breed"... but I think your title is better :P Long story short : If your friends won't take them, maybe your local fish store will. If they're nice, big and ideally pure bred, they might even give you some store credit in exchange.
Can I add my baby Albino Giant Gourami with my: Demasoni- 2inch Snow white- 3inch Blue peacock- 3inch Parrot fish- 2 inch Electric yelow -3inch Livingstoni-3.5inch Marble peacock-2.5 inch
I’ve had luck with tigers barbs with mbuna.
I’ve learned over the years to:
overstock
Rearrange decor frequently
Feed a lot in small portions
Occasionally put one or two in time out!
Great video. I love mbunas. Huge personality!
It’s amazing to me how you know how to pronounce this names of species so perfect
She clearly pronounced with a French accent
As a mbuna noob, I learned a lot from this video! I’m looking forward to setting up my first mbuna tank this year.
I'm so happy this was able to help :) Mbunas are so much fun. I'm sure you'll love it!
After a page of notes while you explained everything I finally have a good understanding of what can be mixed with mbunas. Thank you
Richelle watching this video made me feel like I have died an went to Mbuna heaven where I met a cichlids Goddess.😁 I love your accent an the fluent pronunciation of some of these complex fish names. I just have to say I love the monsteras in your background 🖤

Nice to see a dedicated channel for cichlides. Love from Denmark

Always happy to see you and listen to you expertise.
This is the best video on your channel, really helped me a lot, mbuna definitely my favourite fish, thank you
thanks for the video, really interesting, also your plants are growing really big, looks good :)
Thank you 😄I can't say I have that much credit, they were already pretty big when I bought them.
Finally i can find out what i really have in my tank.Thank you Richelle!!!
Did you find them?
Following fron Brasil!
Nicely explain
keep it up love you from India 🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️ my best wishes are always with you
Your awesome! So knowledgeable!
I have mbunas with tiger barbs and red eye tetras. So far so good.
Thanks for all that helpful information
Thank to this i got my successful mbuna show tank.
Two months still no mortality they are healthy with rocky hardscape and 7.4 ph level water and three times feeding a day and 7 days 30 percent water change
thank you i learn so much from you
I have a group of tiger barbs and rosy barbs with mine
Very informative, tonne of info. Thank u!
I have demasonis with my frontosas and it actually works out.
Great video as always
Have 75 gal with peacocks and Mbuna cichlids 7 in total and 1 tiger Oscar all fish are about 2 to 3 inch and have absolutely no problems in the tank with aggression
I have to suggest a discussion of dither fish. My 4haps&1mbuna were much more enjoyable with the addition of 3-4 giant danios.
Great video Richelle!!!👍🏼👊🏼
Thank you 😄
Nice vid, only have sa cichlids, my tap water here in umeå, north sweden is like 6.5 ph so no mbunas for me :(
You can buy things to increase pH. Also adding baking soda to an aquarium will increase pH.
Looked at this video 3 times in one morning lol. Grate video thanks keep up the grate work can’t wait for the next one watching from the UK 🇬🇧
Thank you :D
I thought it was a great video but not a grate one
I re-grate nothing!
Salut !
Love it.. and loving more..
TIA.
Very informative, excellent video 🤓
Thank you 😄
Hi you mentioned Tropheus. Can I mix Tropheus duboisi with saulosi? Would appreciate some advice. Thank you
I have 4 in a 20 gal, :c but it looks so boring!
Mbuna are more fun with bigger tank and stocking numbers
PUT SIX MORE IN. YOU WILL NEVER BE BORED. TRY A MALE AURATUS!🐠
Love demasoni... Please next video is for tropheus they are like mbuna as well also tell me the sign about the male and female on them.. Love carnivorous. Nice information thank you..
Thank you 😄 I'm planning on writing a Tropheus video. They aren't very well known here in Quebec.
@@QuebecCichlides your welcome. I am excited great work I am really inspired by your work and information about fishes. Good luck! :)
can i keep 3 inch mbunas with an arowana
Great video. I have a question please help me with your knowledge. I want an aquarium yellow labs, blue demasoni, and red peacock. The last one is compatible with the first 2? 🙏 for your help.
I thought one should have just keep single types of Mbuna together. Yet, this video says 4 of a type is fine. Thoughts?
Hi great video. I am cycling a new 75G tank and will soon be adding Lake Malawi Cichlids. You said not to feed them blood worms. What should they be fed?
Thanks
Love it! 🐠
Can i have information about hongi? Try to find any but can't see any useful resources..
Merci :) great video once again!
Will the Red Zebra and other Ominvores Mbuna flakes and Kelp pellets?
I have 3 haplochromis sauvangei, I can put them in my malawi tank? They are the same size if not bigger then some of my mbuna.
Thank you
So , Shall I keep demasoni and trophis in the same tank?thanks
Great video 👍
After viewing your video, I'd like to add some Yoyo loaches to my Mbuna tank. But I've read that Yoyo loaches like soft water, and Mbunas thrive in hard water. Is that an issue? Thank you.
I like your show uar u are you able to find me some it's Paul in labrador city
good video
Thank you 😄
Excuse me , thank you for your videos we really appreciate it. Can you put any snails with the Mbunas? Thank you!

I’m keeping my gold striped pike, black convict, Jack Dempsey with my African cichlids.
thanks this video totally help !
how about snails what kind can I add? Love your Videos and the information
Great idea for a video. Nerita snails are pretty cool 🤓🐟

I need help can i keep aulonocara with angelfish or betta fish
Great video thank you! Would i be able to keep duboisi cichlid with yellow lab and demasoni cichlids? I have a 65gallon tank!
I've often mixed them without any issues :) Feed herbivore foods.
Would you say a frozen Brine Shrimp + Spirulina blend would be good?
Yes
They're Tanganyika carnivores 😉 I wouldn't add them to the mix
Okay, I thought they were omnivores. Thank you 😊
@@amberwetzell2642 No problem :)
I have African Cichlids with Bala sharks and Convicts
Hey I have 4 mbunas in a 20 gallon tank..is it fine?...can i have one parrot chiclid with it?
Can i add may golden zebra loach to my mixed malawi cichlids?
So the yellow tail açei is omnivore ? I’m wanting to add some to my peacock tank but worried about diet
Yes! It's also super peaceful (for an Mbuna)

Hello, When are you going to record in 4K? this would be very helpful
Why would it be helpful?
@@QuebecCichlides More details i guess
can you specify the type or names of fish that are compatible with mbuna, very detailed please hehehehe
because on the website that you have, I don't think it's enough detail. thank you before
as well as aluoncara and haps
Wow Excellent 😘
Thank you 😄
What about mixing Bala sharks with Mbunas?
You mention in this video 8-10 cichlids per 30 gallons. But I’m another video you said 8-12. May I ask what you think the best for my 52 US Gallon tank with an fx4 filter would be? 15-20? Trying to keep the more peaceful end of mbunas in there with lots of rocks.
The peaceful Mbunas usually get a little bigger. I'd keep closer to 15 rather than 20 ;)
QuebecCichlides thank you - I have yellow labs, acei, rustys etc. My filter can handle as many as needed I think. Keep closer to 15 yeah?
How Abt adding Frontosa and cylindricus along with Mbuna s...
I wouldn't mix those together.
Hi . I have mbunas Demasoni . and yellow lab . can i put a Pleco catfish with them . the parameters are good for him? My pleco is
7 inches .
The pleco would have to be acclimated to the higher pH... But they would definitely be okay in this tank 😊 Ive often kept plecos with African cichlids
I have some mature 3-4 inch Mbunas in my tank currently. I want to add some additional Mbunas. Do I need to be careful adding smaller 1.5 inch Mbuna's? Would I have to add more mature Mbuna's?
add a large group of 1.5 would be fine
Thank you. I have a 90gl tank with 11 chlids can I add more to my tank. Most of them is mbuna.
I would add more, depending on the species you have and the look you're trying to achieve.
Here is a video that might help :)

Its super hard to hear because the music is so loud
Hey cichlid geek. Tried juvenile 16 trophious with 6 albino mbunas and went well for a while until the trophious started to die out as they got to 2.5 inches or so. I moved out the albino mbunas and only 6 trophious remain. Any advice..please help
Add caves and large rocks stacked for coverage and LoS (line of sight) breaks. Overstock the tank with proper filtration to match.
🙂 I really like this a new African cichlid keeper help me I have mbuna I do have some peacocks some of my African cichlids is kind of mixed what others not showing with all them they are like I said I'm a new African cichlids keeper what's your advice with a mix tank like Mine
Welcome to the hobby. What kind of advise are you looking for? S
Hi
I started small MBuna 40 gallon breeder for my son. I was wondering if we could add any Lake Tanganyika fish? Black Calvus? Tropheus Duboisi? We currently have 10 small MBUNA Demasoni, yellow lab, OB Peacock.
I wouldn't add Tanganyikans to a 40 gal mbunas tank. It's a little small for tropheus
PS: love the videos and have been showing my 10yr old son to learn about African Cichlids. Will you ever be shipping to US?
In your expertise, would be need to go to 75G to attempt to add a few Tropheus to existing MBuna tank or even larger?
Love your video!
I would love a video on how to not get overwhelmed with fry in display tank. I have a lot of caves soo nesting is really hard 🙂
I like how you put it. I had the idea to write one called "what to do when your fish breed"... but I think your title is better :P
Long story short : If your friends won't take them, maybe your local fish store will. If they're nice, big and ideally pure bred, they might even give you some store credit in exchange.
Can I add my baby Albino Giant Gourami with my:
Demasoni- 2inch
Snow white- 3inch
Blue peacock- 3inch
Parrot fish- 2 inch
Electric yelow -3inch
Livingstoni-3.5inch
Marble peacock-2.5 inch
Don't add gouramis in the african cichlid tank ;)
So far..... The giant gourami's the boss... Should i still take it out? Can u give me a reason why I should? I couldn't get any infos online....
oh! and I also have dragon fin bichir, is that good with my african cichlids?
2 days before one of my mbuna died suddenly. However others are absolutely ok. Little bit confused what could have happened.
Did it have bloat? In my experience that's the #1 culprit... well that and random acts of violence because Mbuna have that problem too.
@@sirgerbilmacintosh9101 Thank you sir for the response. It might be bloating.
My friend please help. Can you have snails with mbuna?
Nerita only 😊
Is mbunna can stay with ghost fish or feather fish???
Nope
