As an Italian who lived in Ditchling, as an au pair in 1980 for Mr&Mrs Perryman's pub 'The North Star, I can well say it's quite emotional to see those roads I walked as if it was my homeland. So welcoming❤
Like others I did this during London to Brighton caught me out lol just glad I didn't walk! The carpark is uphill too just to add insult to injury. Glad I did it.
Sorry to read that 'The North Star' is no more. Wonderful atmosphere in that pub, with Frida and Mick Perryman, and those wonderful children of theirs, James and Ky❤ . Wish I could find out their whereabouts after 43 years❤
Good video. You missed the point that the TDF also came up Ditchling Beacon in 1994 on the stage in to Brighton, greats such as Le Mond, Boardman, Millar, Indurain ( and dare I say Lance) have climbed it. And you can also see the Amex Stadium from the top. What more do you need?
Yep... this was about the time of my cycling obsession. I was there sitting by the side of the road as the peloton flew by. My memory is rather spoiled because Jimmy Savile was in one of the front cars with his head sticking out of the sunroof waving to the crowd. Had I known at the time I would have thrown rocks.
@@darrennixon1986 I live near a fairly bad Hill although short. The hill going down to Nant Gwythain- the welsh lamguage centre. If you go down , you have to go back up as it's a dead end. Just don't go through Trefor Quarry as I did! Best ride this summer was from my home in deep Llyn peninsula to Aberfalls. 80 miles on a steel town bike. (I remember that lake now, I used to go to llyn crafnant from Trefriw as a boy as grew up in bangor/Llandudno , I'm sure we went from the ugly house on the A5 though)
Ollie on GCN and Cycling Weekly for weeks......I wonder if he is also joining Maven, VeganC, Cade, FastFitnessTips, BikeRadar and GTN as well then all of cycling youtube can feature Ollie!
Hi folks at cycling weekly I need some help I currently have a mountain bike which is all good off road but I want to be doing cycling and mountain biking now do I go for a gravel bike or hey cyclocross bike and I’ve literally got round about £900 can you help me please‘ do apologise for any spelling mistakes dyslexia makes me 😂
i''ve got a gravel bike (Giant Anyroad), and it's basically just an endurance road bike with more tire clearance so unless you plan to take it on gravel or can use the wider clearance i'd say just go for a normal endurance bike that can fit 28's

I am just back from having done Ditching Beacon today and I cannot remember at any point the climb flattening out. 😭
That ‘horses’ sign at about 5:15 onwards is a good reference to know when to go full gas.
I've done this twice on the London to Brighton. It really is a nasty climb. The sense of achievement of great, but the effort is serious.
Brilliant I'm doing London to Brighton this year that was really helpful thank you
really informative and engaging CLIP! thanks cycling weekly.
Really nicely shot video. Great work!

ive got this coming up in the L2B ride in june 2022
Glad I'm not the only one who was fooled by the "fake" final bend!

My local village! One young lad everested it!
I have a suspicion that Cycling Weekly is quietly trolling Ollie with these vids for leaving for GCN 😁 Nice video, anyway.
This looks like Hesiers Hill but four times the length 😕. I only just got up the former.
While you wherer in sussex I hope you tackled some of the other climbs such as Kidds Hill, Firle Beacon, Bo Peep or Cob Lane!
7:23 It isn't all downhill Ollie ! There's another 30 metres of elevation gain on Ditchling Road as it bends slowly leftwards.
I live here and cycled this regualy didnt know it was iconic ahaha
to train for climbs, I like to use suspension MTBs. if you can climb with one of them then a lightweight road bike would seem easy.
Is Ollie pulling double duty at CW and GCN. Really enjoy his videos.
Ollie is a double agent lol.
Any love for Rosedale Chimney in this series?
Slightly disappointed with the lack of “Light the beacons!” LOTR quotes/references
enjoyable video, thanks
Where's your mate Joe in this video???
Who needs Alpe d'Huez or the Angliru if you can have Ditchling Beacon! ;)
What's wrong with that helmet? Something is off?
The Cowlyd in North Wales is the hardest climb in the UK!
I'm from North Wales, had to look it up. Near Trefriw.
@@tonyjones9442 Yes that's it. Pretty mental climb to be fair. You have to come back down too which might actually be worse!

Where is your wingman? Last climb give him a heart attack?
is he back to cw?
Made harder by drivers passing too close or on corners and an overwhelming headwind present on most occasions at the top

lol they may very well cross paths at some point down the road. Get it? Down the... Oh nevermind LOL

Get over to porlock hill a proper climb in the south
that helmet strap tho
cannot unsee!
Visiting Brighton in lycra is very brave.
CnE What’s your point?
Grow up
you're too ugly for anyone to be interested- we've got standards in brighton
I feel like people in Brighton are pretty used to that 😆
Must agree with others about Ollie is this an old video or is he floating between GCN and cycling weekly ?
definitely and old video, he said there would be a few weeks worth of videos with him after he left
Ecaxtly
*exactly
I hate those false peaks!
I walked it
i've climbed it once
Still Ollie videos. It's like tupac all over again, except Ollie's not dead he just defected to GCN.
5th comment
Aaaaw yeah, 3rd view, 1st like, 1st comment! Where my early crew at?
Thumbs up if in no way iconic
It’s iconic for its placement in the London to Brighton ride
