Best Exercise for Knee Arthritis Pain Relief?

  • The best knee arthritis exercise really depends on where you are in your knee osteoarthritis. Treating knee arthritis really is a process and cannot be fixed by one single exercise done repeatedly over time. This is why sometimes an exercise will help for a while and then eventually the pain might return.
People that suffer from knee arthritis often find 1 exercise they like that makes them feel better - like cycling for example. Then they’ll invest in a bike and keep doing that with hopes of making the knee arthritis problem go away. But that’s just not the full picture for treating a knee osteoarthritis problem. Once the knee improves, then it’s important to start to work on exercises that progress you through the next phase.
In this video, Dr. David overviews the different phases of knee arthritis and shows you examples of what exercises you might be doing depending on what phase you’re in for your knee arthritis.

I walk 3 km every morning and have been suffering from left inner knee pain for months now. I started walking curling my toes and focusing on using my glutes not my front thigh to power my walk as you said in prior videos. It's like a miracle, my knee did not hurt this morning or during the night. Additional benefit is my posture is better while walking. Thankyou so much.

Hi Juanita, That's wonderful to hear! We're thrilled that focusing on using your glutes has made such a positive impact on your knee pain. It's amazing how small adjustments in technique can lead to significant improvements. Keep up the great work with your walking routine, and we're glad to hear that your posture has also benefited! 🧡

Hi I suffer from knee osteoarthritis and have tried ypur recommended exercises on strengthening glutes which really help. What I’d like to know is how to be able to sit down and stand up from a seated position without pain. My knees stiffen after sitting and can hardly get up without hand support.
I also have pain after walking for more than 20 minutes.

I just celebrated my 84th birthday! I was a competitive athlete well into my forties & have continued to be physically active, power walking at least 3 miles daily, seasonal swimming & gardening year round. Intermittent knee pain has finally moved me to a respected orthopedic doctor. My Doc took pics which revealed significant loss of cartilage in both knees along with arthritis.
However, my pain would flair but also wane with rest & gentle exercises. Lately the pain has increased along with feelings of knee instability .
Your "baby sqats" are helping already! I plan to follow all the knee videos
& am so grateful to you for this help.

Excellent video! Very concise, and easy to understand! I was recently diagnosed with a Baker's cyst, and a recent xray showed mild to moderate bilateral osteoarthritis. I'm an active person, and it's challenging to be so suddenly taken off my feet. I've started those tailgate swings....how long and often should I do these? Also wondering if I should be concentrating on healing the Baker's cyst before starting exercises for the arthritis. Thanks so much, you have an amazing site, and I'll definitely continue to follow.

Anti inflammation diet style, exercise and PT, these combined have gave me back my mobility in my R knee, OA. Keep moving, even if you just stretch every day.
Make sure a professional, PT, Dr, and Certified Nutritionist guides you!!! 🦵🚶‍♀️
I literally had to learn to walk again during the early phases, frightening.

I'm seeing a "Manual PT" here where I live. He is having me do "bridges", and exercises that he says "to tighten up the muscles around the knee". My problem has been "lateral miniscus tears, so I'm not feeling as good when I have a session with him and he is wanting to tighten the muscles, and not focusing a lot on the glutes. I go to the gym, and am doing well with wts, 15 min with the "Tailgate Swing", the Oliptical and "Recumbent Bike" (as well as a machine that helps the glutes). So, should I approach him about focusing on the glutes and less with tightening muscles around the knee ??

Great video. Any suggestions on ensuring to get cardio while dealing with knee arthritis? Most of your videos don't like the traditional types of cardio (bike, treadmill, elliptical, etc.).

    • @epmanualphysicaltherapy
      @epmanualphysicaltherapy  2 месяца назад +1

Hi Netta, the bike, treadmill, and ellipticals are all fine as long as your glutes are the main muscles that activate. When you finish your exercise and you feel that your quads and hamstrings are more sore vs. your glutes you could be exacerbating the issue. If you are in pain the best thing you can do is rest to not create more inflammation and discomfort. Walking is one of the best exercises you can do for cardio when dealing with Knee OA.

Hey Randy, they can be as long as you aren't feeling any pain and the focus is on the glutes. Glutes need to be the main muscle group that is activated if you are trying to help knee pain.

I have bony protuberances, swollen bones, reduced joint space and my knee will not go all the way back; it’s between 1 and 2 inches forward. Will your program help my knee further, or do. I require a knee op first?
