Gotta love instructional videos that just get to the point. No attempts at humor, no minute long production company introductions with brash music and cheap graphics, just right to the point. Certainly helps that the point is quality instructional information, and for that I thank you.
Bumcast I should be thanking you. Either way, keep up the good work. Have a feeling my nephews skill with the fly rod is about to get very good once I send him to your channel.
I wish I could cast so effortlessly! Really nice. I'll be purchasing this, for sure. It looks like exactly the casting technique I need to strive for to fish the places I love. I'm primarily a bass fisherman, and this looks as if it would be great for the cover and closed in places I fish. Thank you for the great video. I hope, as a beginning fly caster, to be able to cast like this one day.
Today was the first time I've really needed to roll cast in a long time (wind and terrain conditions totally negated all my other casts.) Scored a fish but, it was definitely a humbling experience as I fumbled around a bit before enough rust came off for me to achieve some form of accuracy and decent presentation lol. So now, I'm back here on this excellent instructional video that helped me get started in fly fishing last year.
This is a great video. I can't wait to practice this. Since I fly fish for largemouth bass, I find my self fishing a lot of spots on ponds with trees behind me rather than in streams. Most of my casting techniques are things I made up, but after hearing enough about the roll cast i finally decided to check it out and it looks very useful.
Mr. McNeil, I praise you for these beautiful and instructive videos. Your clear, instructive graphics are only surpassed by the sheer beauty and artistry of your casting. You have brought pleasure to this unemployed viewer. I hope to be employed soon in order to be in a position to purchase your fine dvds. Thank you.
Great videography mate, watching a good roll cast in slo-mo never gets old. I fish the Tongariro a fair bit and roll casting is a life saver. I subscribed and look forward to exploring your other videos. cheers, Craig
Antipodean fly fishing commentaries are a sweet antidote to the hoards of American commentaries in which someone who can barely cast a fly feels the need to educate us with the benefit of their inexperience. Nice explanations!
Great videos, looks so graceful, I just bought a fly rod yesterday and I'm going to take her down the river to have a bit of a practice today, my issue is not so much with the cast itself, but what is going on will all that extra line and so forth?, how much line should I pull off, should I have the drag loose, and how much line should I start with hanging out the end of the rod? This is beginners stuff I know but I cant find much info on it, these videos are the best I have found on casting though, If I could get half as good as you I would be happy.
Totally agree with earlier comments. I've seen lots of videos as I am trying to get competent - this video will go much further in getting me to move forward. The next video needs to be how to land that fish once the graceful cast has attracted it.
Hi, You certainly inspire enthusiasm in your audience. In the sequence you show when you cast on grass, what are you using for a rod and line. Thanks for a great demonstration.
What part does a specific type (slow, medium fast etc.) rod play in roll casting...which is best. Also, is there a line that is better suited to roll casting than others. Thanks for a great video and instruction.
Great video all round! cheers. One big question though and I don't think it's covered here.. With the Roll cast, all steps are covered, except the very first step, and that's how to get the line out in front of you first. Everytime this is demonstrated in this video, the line is already re-loaded out in front. Could you please explain or show how this is done? Cheers
I'm looking into buying a lighter set up for LM/Peacock bass as well as smallish redfish. Do you think the sage vantage in a 5# would be a good rod for this? And how does the vantage compare to the sage salt(which I absolutely love)? P.S Love this video series! Greatly improved my cast!!
Are you using a shooting/mini skaggit head in this video? I can't seem to perfect the D loop. I just bought SA Magnum line and it performs way better than my stock line, but the OPST Skaggit system looks appealing. Thanks for the great content! Cheers!
Can you effectively roll cast with a 7 foot rod. The reason I ask, is because I'm looking to purchase a 7-8 foot rod for streams that are densely covered. With that said, is it null to purchase a rod of that length when you can roll cast with a 9 foot rod? Hope that makes sense.
Maybe if I actually knew how to cast like this, I would actually catch a fish on the fly!! (still haven't lol) & thanks for the video, very well shot..
excellent video, amazing casting skills I looked down to see if someone asked about the bright yellow part of your line, but nobody did… what's that? Are you coloring it yourself? Thanks >
A long belly Expert Distance Instructors line from Scientific Anglers. Probably not the easiest line to use for most, but long belly lines and DT's do tend to roll cast well.
The line used looks a lot thicker then what I'm using. I'm struggling to get any distance on my fly, would this help? I believe my line is wf7f. Any tips would be much appreciated!!
Of course yes - that is a fairly fast rod, Much easier with a fuller flexing slow rod however. Our FastGlass is best for this swiftflyfishing.com/collections/custom_fly_rods
+USColt54 Difficult to tell without seeing it, but it most likely that you are either throwing quite a large loop - and /or your loop trajectory is quite high. Don't aim to the loop up, try to roll it out parallel to the water
I HAVE A PROBLEM! I have a very good Std Overhead cast or even side armed cast. A good snake roll, a sorry Snap T...The Roll cast escapes me completely. From a bank, I can create a good D-Loop, begin the cast with the reel 14-16" from my ear, forward and out with a good Tap at the end and no matter what I do, my line goes 20 feet up 20 feet out, with the bulk of the line in a neat pile. Haul/No haul- 1 O-Clock to 11, 10, 9..doesn't matter. The results are the same. Every time I do not get a level cast, it's mostly up in a huge loop. It's better side armed, fixed line but cannot get a haul to work. -and there are no Experts in 100 miles of me except Carter Nelson who is impossible to get hold of.
The biggest problem with the roll cast is it takes a special or expensive kind of rod. An overhead cast can be done with any rod, but a roll cast demands alot more of the rod. For years I thought my technique was useless, and then this year I spent some spare money on a premium rod recommended by my local dealer, and suddenly the roll cast worked, and not only worked; it cast far as f*ck!
Superb cinematography. Best casting how-to video series I've seen! Please keep them coming.
Cheers! - lots more coming in 2015 ;-)

This is by far the most well-made video on roll casting. The editing is great and the animations are extremely helpful. Great job!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I thought I could roll cast reasonably well. Uhh no. Thank you for giving me something to practice when the bite is off! Excellent sir!
I wish I could cast so effortlessly! Really nice. I'll be purchasing this, for sure. It looks like exactly the casting technique I need to strive for to fish the places I love. Great video. You make it look so easy.

What a beautiful piece of water to fish on
It really is!
Excellent lesson... Thank You!
That's very generous of you - thank you :)
Great video...inspired me to go out and practice!

That's very usefull , with those skills i can
do a better fishing performance!
thank you for the tips.
Happy to help!
roll cast the way to go, J.
Nice video. May I ask which rod and line did you use?
What part does a specific type (slow, medium fast etc.) rod play in roll casting...which is best. Also, is there a line that is better suited to roll casting than others. Thanks for a great video and instruction.
Well done and very instructive. Thanks!
Great Cove Adventures Thanks - glad you liked it!
Wonderful instruction. Thanks.
thank you!

Just roll in out a couple of times
Must try and master that, it looks so easy ... lol
Hi !!!!!!!!!!!! Wonderfull videos. I´ve enjoyed them a lot. Do you have some video teaching snake roll for one hand rod?
Thanks
Jaime from Argentina
Hi Jamie, we don't yet have clips of Spey casts for the single hander, but intend doing this in the future - stay tuned!
I'm looking into buying a lighter set up for LM/Peacock bass as well as smallish redfish. Do you think the sage vantage in a 5# would be a good rod for this? And how does the vantage compare to the sage salt(which I absolutely love)?
P.S Love this video series! Greatly improved my cast!!
this is really neat, i cant wait for the snow to melt. i till fish in the winter and ill try it but winter fishing isnt that great
Thank you!
Excellent video. Cheers!
Thank you!
In terms of rods action or stiffness, is there a better suited rod for roll and spey cast than others?
Are you using a shooting/mini skaggit head in this video? I can't seem to perfect the D loop. I just bought SA Magnum line and it performs way better than my stock line, but the OPST Skaggit system looks appealing. Thanks for the great content! Cheers!
No - just a standard forward fly line
Great videos!
Thanks!
where is this water?...that is a beautiful run you are fishing.
Wow, amazing casts! What is the rod and fly line that you are using please? Thank you!
It makes no difference - just learn to cast well and you can cast anything
Yes, you can roll cast with almost any length rod. The principles are all the same.
What rod and line are you using. that is the smoothest casts I have seen!
It makes no difference - just learn to cast well and you can cast anything
ive noticed a slight haul with that control hand. i could never get a roll cast right until i put a double haul on it.
Amazing loops
Thank you!
Great work! Thank you!
You are very Welcome!
Maybe if I actually knew how to cast like this, I would actually catch a fish on the fly!! (still haven't lol) & thanks for the video, very well shot..
Great information
excellent video, amazing casting skills
I looked down to see if someone asked about the bright yellow part of your line, but nobody did…
what's that? Are you coloring it yourself?

hello,
great video, can you tell us what line you are using ?
A long belly Expert Distance Instructors line from Scientific Anglers. Probably not the easiest line to use for most, but long belly lines and DT's do tend to roll cast well.
whats the ideal rod length for the roll cast , i have an 8 footer with a 5 pound line weight and i just cant seem to get the cast down like i want
The line used looks a lot thicker then what I'm using. I'm struggling to get any distance on my fly, would this help? I believe my line is wf7f. Any tips would be much appreciated!!
Buy our fly casting DVD is our advice! swiftflyfishing.com
So the direction of my cast has to be parallel to the line in the water correct?
spearfisherman308 - correct
does anything in execution change when using a 9 wt rod and weighted streamer?
Fundamentally - no
Correct
So how do you change directions? A false cast?
Sure
Can this all be done with a fast action rod
Of course yes - that is a fairly fast rod, Much easier with a fuller flexing slow rod however. Our FastGlass is best for this swiftflyfishing.com/collections/custom_fly_rods
what rod and line are you using here...
Very nice.
Thank you!
Will a WF fly line be fine for doing roll casts?
Josh Everett yes
How long was your leader you were using?
9ft
beautifull!!
Thank you!!
its so hard but I can make a very log cast but I can't roll cast and i broke my rod with this technique.pls help.
Pleasure!
Great stuff - go practice!
What is your fly rod and fly line?
It makes no difference - just learn to cast well and you can cast anything
Does the quality off the line make a difference
Yes, I suppose so.
U make it look so easy
Practice Patrick - just lots of time spent doing it
Thanks for the replys 1 more question which floating line do u recommend for dry fly fishing
4 weight rod
Hola, me podrías decir que marca es la línea mm
thanks!
love it
Thanks!
When I roll cast everything comes out straight except for the leader. The leader is crumbled up together part of the time. REASON?
+USColt54 Difficult to tell without seeing it, but it most likely that you are either throwing quite a large loop - and /or your loop trajectory is quite high. Don't aim to the loop up, try to roll it out parallel to the water
+USColt54 If it's not a technique problem, maybe not the right size leader?

Watch the video...
This is a 6# long belly instructors line from S.A
Where are u in this video
I am the one in the river...
