    Found this video because I want to know the difference between the 120 and 220 models as "shopping" for a riding lawn mower. This is the absolute best review that I have ever seen. Not only was he thorough but he was so easy to understand. Many John Deere products make their way all the way to the butt-end of the world, to our wonderful little island of Tasmania. I have a new S120 set to be delivered next week, and it makes me very happy that I can buy something 'Made in the USA'. (I lived in Georgia for a decade, and still have a soft spot for Tennessee.) I am glad that I watched your video, because I have now asked the dealer to install the 'old style' oil filter. My neighbor has four big John Deere tractors, and the yellow & green machines are very common here on the island that the world forgot.

    • @pierrejoubert681
      @pierrejoubert681 2 года назад

      I just watched a few videos of people converting back to the simple filter, and saw the price of the John Deere cartridge. A figure of anything from $40 to $70 has been mentioned, which means that it will be way of a hundred Ozzie dollars. The dealer is charging me that amount for the 'back' conversion, but I still think it was a wise decision.

    Excellent review as usual, thank you. Deciding between the S120 and S130. Difference being S130 has little wider rear tires, electronic PTO and comes with front bumper. By the way, you mentioned the mower would not run without someone in the seat. I know you meant the blades cannot be engaged without someone the seat. It will run with parking break on, even if your not In The seat.

    Just bought this mower today at Home Depot. After watching your video, I don't even need to bother with the manual to get started mowing when it's delivered next week. Got lucky as it was the last one in stock. On that note, I'd been to numerous stores looking for a mower and most were out of everything except the most expensive zero turn mowers due to (as they said) "supply chain issues due to Covid." I've heard the same thing from grocery stores as per certain items that they've had a hard time getting.
    I live in Tennessee not too many miles from where John Deere makes these mowers so I guess that made the difference in availability. Lucky me! Lol.

    Would there be any benefit in buying this mowers from the John Deere store vs buying it from a store like Lowe’s? Or there’s no difference?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 года назад +2

      The benefit of buying from a John Deere dealership is that your machine will have been set-up by a technician. This means it is more likely that all of the proper steps were taken to make sure this machine is ready to go right off the showroom floor. Sometimes things get missed, like tires being inflated to the correct pressure and the deck being level. So you still want to check these things. Also when you buy from a dealership they will have you and your machine on file so they can let you know about any service specials and they can keep record of when you had work done if needed. Great question by the way!

The seat was hard as a rock,but it looked like a well built tractor. I got home and read the reviews for it and they were horrible. People were complaining about the deck having alot of play in it and it not leaving a good cut. Problems with broken and prematurely worn steering components. Maybe some of those weren't fair reviews,but overall it didnt seem like a good buy.

    Thanks for this very helpful video! Subscribed. I just ordered the S120 but was torn between it and the S130 which is identical except for just $100 more gives you a front bumper, wider rear tires, fender flares and electric PTO. Hard decision especially since I bought the front bumper for $75! So now just a $25 difference. I probably should have gotten the S130 but am wary of the electric PTO since over 15 years my last lawn tractor never had a problem with the manual PTO other than having to replace the belt every four years or so. When you throw that manual lever and the blades don't spin up you know the belt has stretched and slipped off the pulley. You can slip it back on and finish the lawn. The electric PTO probably will last a long time too so I'm probably worrying over nothing. Oh well, no big deal, you can't go wrong with either.

    Great video - very insightful. Quick question - I am looking into the s140 and was wondering if there is any concern in regards to the 22HP Engine powering the 3 blade system? I noticed it is the same engine used for the smaller models with the 2 blade and smaller deck so I wanted to know if I should have any worries going with the s140? Any info would be super appreciated. Thank you!

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 года назад

      No I would not be worried about it at all. It is plenty of horsepower for that deck. The 48" deck was ran by an 18.5HP engine on some previous model so you shouldn't have any problem! Great question and thanks for watching!

I have a half an acre of land and I don't mind getting a lawn mover a little bit more than I need. So I'm looking for under $3,000. But I can probably do very well with one around $2,000.

    Brent I have a quick question. I have a new S120. Put a bagger on it but I did not change the blades. I just cut the grass and it was a little damp ( not wet) and the grass kept clogging up the chute. I haven't had an issue since I got it but then again I didn't cut it damp before, it was always completely dry. Could it be the blades? Could it be that it was just damp and I need to wait until it's completely dry? What's your thoughts?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 года назад +1

      Good question. I think this is a mixture of both. I would definitely put on high lift blades when using a bagger to get the most air flow possible. Also any moisture at all will always make the grass sticky, making it harder to make its way all the way back to the chute. I know this is a pain but unfortunately it is the one drawback to bagging systems. Thanks for watching!

    I just ordered an S120 and saw that a lot of people are converting back to a traditional oil filter system. I have noticed though that some of the people converting who have RUclips videos are changing the oil when the tractor is warm which is incorrect for the 30 sec Oil Change should be done cold. So is it that these people are not doing the oil change correctly or is the 30 sec Oil Change truly not changing all or most of the oil?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 года назад

      It is true that with the 30 sec oil change that you are only changing part of the oil. But you have a much larger filter that is preloaded with fresh oil in the filter itself. I hope this answers your question and thanks for watching!

    One more question. I bought a S120 and I am concerned with the TL200 transmission. Is that tranny strong enough for dethatching and plug aeration? I only have 3/4 of an acre mostly flat but with one narrow hill right at the 15 degree pitch. The tractor doesn't seem to have an issue with the hill with the blades engaged just fyi. Just concerned should have probably upgraded to the S240 but hard to get where I am as most tractors have been sold out for over a month now. The S120 was sold out the day after I purchased it, and yes you can order but I am being told around 6-8 weeks at least for delivery.

    Great, informative channel. I purchased a JD S120 mower at Home Depot last week, and I'm waiting for it to be delivered. Saw it in person and it seemed well made. I compared it to a Troy-Bilt "Bronco" riding mower next to it, and the Troy-Bilt seemed poor quality compared to the JD. To top it off, the rear left tire was completely flat. I digress....One question I did have with the JD S120 is the Quick Oil Change kit. I heard that once you replace the kit it doesn't remove all the old oil from the engine (not sure how true that is). Wouldn't defeat the purpose of changing the kit if the old oil is still left inside the engine?

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 года назад +1

      Yes this is true, the filter is preloaded with oil and only replaces about 40% of the dirty oil but the filter is much larger which adds more filtering surface area to clean the remaining dirty oil. This can always be converted back to a standard filter and drain system if desired. Great questions and I hope you enjoy your new mower. Thanks for watching!

    • @sptrader6316
      @sptrader6316 3 года назад +1

      With the quick change oil filter system, you can still drain the rest of the oil, if you want to. There is a drain plug on the right side of the engine. You'll just have to add extra oil, after the filter change and oil draining.

    • @WesternEquipment

I immediately returned it for the John Deere S120 and I couldn't be happier. I usually follow the rule of Pay for quality if you use it often(car, lawn mower, drills etc..) and get cheap tools that you rarely use. I went against that and realized it was a huge mistake.
