Good video. I've had a D130 that I bought new 10 years ago and I've put around 160 hrs on it. Yes my d130 has also wore a channel into the cover. Mine has way more hours though at 250 and it still has enough meat on it. I suppose you just change out the cover but it last a really long time anyway.
Very good video, I've owned a JD D130 for over five years. Very happy with it with but one small exception. From day one the Fuel gauge has stayed on full regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank.
Awesome video!! I have the s130 that I got new two years ago. I had problems with the tires loosing air so I just put inner tubes in to fix that. What is the recommended actual tire pressure for front and back for best cut and making sure my deck is straight and level. I’m in Atlanta Ga, so lots of hills and not so level yards. I know this is a residential mower but feel I should be able to cut faster than a turtle without having to go over two and three times.
Bought my S130 new. No problems, great mower. But I did my first oil change with the Easy Change....well, the new one twisted on no problem and I was good to go. But I guess it didn't 'lock' fully and after I started it, the filter popped up and lost oil. I immediately shut it down and locked it on. I added half a quart of JD oil. I didn't even know that with the Easy Change you may have to add extra oil! By default I did anyways. Pissed me off... So now I bought the Conversion Kit with oil, filter, filter adapter and extended oil drain. My next oil change is gonna be correct!
I have a d130 with 250 hours and while the hydro transmission does whine a little sometimes it’s still got great power. I’ve even towed some pretty heavy stuff with it and it does it no problem.
Thanks for the helpful video. I have a new S130 and it take a lot of pedal force to set the parking brake. I tried the parking brake on two new S130’s in the store and one was much easier than mine and the other in between mine and the other. Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks
My S130 came with nice options like the fuel gauge, bumper, etc. I wanted to know if I could add the upgrade seat I see the S140+ models which has a lumbar support knob? I also wanted to know if I can just swap out the rear tires/rims from the smaller rim/bubble tires TO the larger rim/lower profile tire? I plan on changing the front wheel bushings to bearings too
Love your videos. Thanks for sharing your real hands on experience servicing John Deere tractors , like the s130 we own. We bought a new model s130 last Spring. Are you aware of JD s130 owners having problems with the PARKING BRAKE HANDLE breaking? With our s130 showing only 60 hrs I have had 3 of these handles replaced on warranty. I will say I am very careful to handle our JD tenderly. The JD dealers’ staff tell me that they are not aware of these breaking on other customers lawn tractor. They even sent their mobile tech to our home last week to bring a 3rd new parking brake handle and TO TRY and see if he could see any reason why these handles are breaking for me. The JD service tech said he couldn’t see any obvious reason. As a retired engineer myself I find these little plastic clip inside the parking brake handle to appear RATHER FRAGILE. Hope your wisdom can help … I really like our s130 that we bought to replace our 17 year old LA120. > G. Lewis …Mactaquac NB, Canada
I've broken several of those parking brake handles accidentally myself. It's wasn't so common that I thought there was an issue with them other than the fact they ARE low quality. One time while joking around with some mechanics, I broke a throttle lever on a d120. I was shocked how it broke so easily. Everything is built so cheaply now to maximize profits.
How can the fuel pickup tube inside the gas tank on a John Deere D130 come off? I suspected I needed to remove it and clean it out after blowing the fuel line from fuel filter backwards to the tank until I saw it bubbling. This helped me be able to mow again after it would only run on choke and not for long. I suspect I’ve got something in my tank clogging the fuel pickup tube. After trying to remove the fuel pickup tube, I think I’ve damaged the white plastic clip that holds it down and suspect I should replace it.
Great video. Just bought a new 100 series from Home Depot. Complete nightmare. 1st one came, obviously sitting outside and floor for awhile. Dead battery, charged and it ran for a couple minutes then started smoking and shooting out flames from the front. Swapped out and got another, looks new this time but came battery completely dead again. I don't know if it's HD or John Deer but not happy so far. On trickle charger day 2 and still not fully charged. Valuable info though. Wish I saw before buying.
That's why you spend a little more (sometimes, not always) and support your small local dealers. When we sell a machine, you get explanation, you get test run. You get SUPPORT. you get what you pay for
This year I'm planning on buying my first John Deere lawn mower and I was wondering if the John Deere d140 is a good mower if you have on leveled land which I do about just a little over a half acre.
Its a decent mower but I think their decks are too thin. There are better options in my opinion. Here is a recent video I did comparing the JD to some other brands. ruclips.net/video/QNlB8cpsVb4/видео.html
I recently purchased an E170 And took it to a local John Deere dealer and ask them about attaching a snowplow or snowblower. I was advised not to do so due to the lightweight transmission with plastic gears. What are your thoughts on this?
I am looking forward to find out how to adjust the drive belt tension, my belt always seems to be 2 inches long even though its a John Deere OEM drive belt.
The drive belts always seem to be too loose. There is no way to really adjust the tension. They just get tighter when the parking brake is released and loosen when you engage the parking brake.
@@Mechanical_Mindmy drive belt is so loose that it barely moves the mower. It will not power the mower up any kind of hill….even one with a very slight incline. Any suggestions? Thanking you in advance.
Hi, thanks for the info you share, I'm trying to absorb all your knowledge. Will you give me info on why my S 130's gas gauge stopped working? Everything else is working fine. Thanks
I have a S 130 new from Lowes. When lifting the deck to the 4 inch setting, it's sort of tight getting it into that 4 inch slot, evertyhing lower that that seems to work fine. Suggestions?
Had a similar problem first time I removed the deck for maintenance. The linkage and deck hangers were not installed right. I removed and reinstalled the back 2 hangers and it worked just fine. Something wasn't lined up right.
I bought a E100. One wheels spin as soon as it's a bit inclined or damp. There is no differential lock. Can I upgrade the transmission with one from another model?
Bro This was an EXCELLENT educational video, i have the e100 just tuned it up, spark plug replacement all filters and oil, getting ready to replace blades and grease fittings and lube points, had mine 5 yrs now. Works great! Anything else should i do to it?
Keep an eye on the gas cap's gasket. Check the fuel tank for dirt & debris in it. Try try run ethonal free gas if possible. Adjust the valves 100 hours. Keep an eye on the oil consumption. Change the oil AND the filter (not just the oil) every 50 hours or every year. Which ever comes first.
just got a d110 ( i dont think its plastic. it hydrostatic, has a gas pedal ) and it wont go up hill after using it twice. it went up hill just long enough for the guy to sell it to me. any idea what it can be? only 200 hrs on it
Great video! I have the same mower and roughly same hours on it. Runs great, it’s an awesome machine. Got 2 questions for you, what’s your thoughts on the transmission being “non serviceable” how long do they usually last? And as for the spindles… are they using sealed bearings inside? I have seen other videos where the spindles get taken apart and the grease doesn’t even penetrate the bearing because they are sealed. Awesome video! I subscribed!
Thanks Frank! The transmission in these are great. Its rare the see one come in with damage. I did see one where the top rubber plug leaked oil from the plug dry rotting. There was no damage. Once it gets too low on oil it justs stops moving. Add oil through the top plug and it worked great. You'll have more belt and idelr issues far before the transmission. I replace these spindles often at work. Ive taken apart the sindles on the commerical Z mowers but I usally quote to just replace the spindles on the 100 series residental riding mowers since there are about $50 for an all new assembly. I will take one apart this week and make a short video. Im not sure if they have sealed bearings. JD does some weird engineering sometimes. Im going to be posting some more videos soon going into more detail on different parts of the D130
@@jimmyrodd6476 I have a long list of videos I plan to make. Its sometimes hard to find the time. If you have a topic youd like me to cover let me know. Thanks so much
Good video. I do have a question however. I keep hearing that the spindle bearings are sea!ed bearings and that it does no good to pump grease onto that fitting in the housing because it just fills Up the cavity inside but does not get into those sealed bearings. Is this true?
Great video. I came on RUclips today to see if I can find out why the blade engagement cable on my E130 won't stay in the top slot/holder. Each time I've never had an issue until today. Now when I engagement the blade the cable will become disconnect from that top section. It's hard to put back in, but I get it in and when I engage the blade, the same thing happens on repeat. Thoughts and recommendations?
Hey this is off topic a little bit but I Have a John Deere S130 and a John Deere S170, and I love them both they're are great little mowers. Anyway the ride, the overall comfort , and just everything about the 170 is better but I can't fit the 48 inch deck through the gate backyard to the back yard the 42 inch deck on the 130 barely fits but it does. Can I put the 42" under the 170 and put thr 48" under the 140 and interchange them. it just seems like the garden tractor tire height I is my only problem right ?or am I missing something? I can't level the deck down enough all the way down on 1 inch it's still 3 1/2 inches high because of the tall garden tire? Help lol
Please talk about greasing the spindles. I understand that the bearings are sealed and the grease fittings only shoot grease into a void and really don't do anything. Please comment.
I have an S130 and when I look for an air filter I don't see anything for an S130. Can I use the same air filter the E130 uses? What's the difference between the E, D & S130 mower? What's the E,D & S stand for?
Start looking for the filter based on ENGINE model info. Honestly, I see why these mowers (all, not just JD) are in such poor shape, seems most people have zero common sense
I unfortunately I bought a D105, can you make a video or tell me how I can get the Rear tires and wheels off the rusted rear axle? That will not damage the Plastic Trans! Thank You for any help you can give me!
What has worked for me in that situation is soaking the shaft with wd40. Then use a hammer and a piece of wood as an extension to knock the wheel off the shaft. Hitting the wheel in both directions on the shaft will help break the bond.
8:45 am I have an e170 that’s about 6 years old. Only has about 30 hours. When it starts cold it runs really rough but runs fine pretty quickly. Any ideas? Thanks
Just wondering if you would know why my fuel cap would unscrew and fall off while cutting grass. John Deere 170 with only 7 hours on it. I believe I am putting gas cap on tight but twice now, when I stopped cutting, I noticed the fuel cap off and hanging down. The lawn mower runs fine but I don't know why it keeps happening and I worry about getting trash/dust in the fuel tank. Any suggestion would be appreciated. I didn't pay any attention to the gasket, but I will check to make sure it has one.
I've never seen that happen. If it only has 7 hours it should still be covered under warranty (assuming it's not past the year limit) Id take to a the nearest dealer and request a new fuel cap and fuel system clean out.
Hey John, thanks for watching! Id remove the spark plugs and then crank the engine over a few times. Check your oil to see if it smells like gas. Also check the fuel shut off valve on the carb is operating properly. Let me know and I'll do my best to help
The brake pedal feels the same but the brake is not holding, there is a way to adjust the brake on the left side of the transmission. It takes an Allen wrench (can't remember the size) If the pedal is loose I would think a retainer pin has fallen out letting the pedals linkage to fall out of position.
Im surprised you didnt talk about testing the hydrostatic transmissions. For all of these lower cost tractors its the weak point. Easy to check for slipping with a quick test ride.
Not familiar with the D110. On my E160 I’d work the plunger up and down quickly several times. Unplug the connection under the hood and clean the contacts. If that doesn’t fix it you need a need plunger switch. Not very expensive.
No. I basically do videos on things when I work on them. I try to cover general topics on common issues I see so my viewers can make the repairs themselves and save some time and money. Is there specific issue you are having with your mower?
@@marccreamer8086 in this video I show how to remove and inspect the deck on those mowers. Its really easy. Good luck ruclips.net/video/WIQG4FkWmWA/видео.html
I have a 2019 e130 bought new from Lowe's. My problem is it eats deck belts. Can not find the reason. I removed the plastic covers on the pulleys and this helped not chew the belt up as bad. Have you seen this problem before?
The plastic covers are also belt guides that help keep the belt on the spindle pulleys. How long are your deck belts lasting? Ive seen where people accidentally install the belts where they're twisted and once it's twisted and run it will ruin the belt.
Id remove the deck and check each spindle and idler. You may have an issue where the deck brakes are not releasing properly. The deck brake might be holding pressure on your spindle pulleys and that would ruin a belt fast.
@mechanicalmind just curious you said the S120 and below have the plastic transmission. The stats show that the s120 and s130 have the same transmission. Did I miss something? Just asking because I just bought a s120. Thanks for the vids and your time.
If its the same model, for example a John Deere Z335E. They are the same. The difference is that dealers usually do not sell the lower end/ entry level models that Lowes and Home Depot sell. ruclips.net/video/WjBUwjyFS2g/видео.html
This was an extremely helpful and educational video. Thank you Sir. I believe I am having issues with my voltage regulator on the same model, could you tell me how to locate it and R&R. I plan to do a test with the negative cable off and harness detached to locate the parasitic draw. It will stay running if jumped but dies as soon as I put it away and try to restart.
It should be bolted to the right side of the engine. A red wire and a yellow wire going to it. First check your battery's condition. Often times if the battery is too old it will not hold a charge. The batterys one them seem to only last about 2 years or less.
@@Mechanical_Mind thank you. The mower is about 4 years old and only has 36 hours on it. When I connect my HALO battery booster it shows 11.4v - 11.6v, after jumping and running for a bit if I try to start it, the battery isn’t strong enough again and fails to start. I’m gonna try a parasitic drain test and remove negative cable and test with multimeter, then disconnect fuse and see if it’s after fuse, if so that should tell me the drain is at the voltage regulator. Sound right ?
@@jimmunhall here is a link to the battery tester I use on every mower I look at. Its cheap and works great. It tells you the current life % and current CCA. www.harborfreight.com/automotive/diagnostic-testing-scanning/battery-testing/digital-automotive-battery-analyzer-66892.html
Not sure Id say its common on those mowers. First start with the simple and most common reasons first. Check the spark plugs, check the coils are working. If the spark plug and coils are working. Id next remove the valve cover on the cylinder that is not firing. A push rod could have come loose or fallen. Is so adjust the valve as described. Could be a broken connecting rod also. Remove the spark plug and stick a long extension or rod and see if you can push the piston is still conmected. If its not you will ne able to move it easily.
U should take the quick change oil filter off and put a regular one its only like 25 bucks thats what I did to mine get all the oil out not just a little bit.but mine only has 59 hrs on it kept it lubed up spinde berring already bad.and it smells of burning oil not using it or smoking its at the dealership now.but I had a la 125. 14 years old never had any issues I just wanted to upgrade to a bigger engine wish I would of kept it lol
My John Deere E130 suddenly does not even crank and the hydrostatic will move whether the lever is in or out. I drove it into field came back and turn key and nothing. Any ideas
Yes, very normal. These gas tanks just sit in there on a “weight scale”. The more gas the heavier & the gauge shows full. If you are close to empty, there’s no weight, the tank jossles about & shows it’s close to empty.
On mowers like this, all the brands use engines from Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, or Kawasaki. Surging is usually caused by a vacuum leak, bad carb, or bad/old fuel.
Hello, I checked the oil, smells normal. After it runs for 20 mins or so, it sputters then stops. When I take the gas cap off I can hear a vacuum sound it passes quickly. There is a box with some rubber tubes that run in to the gas tank, the box also has a very small foam filter that I, kind if cleaned. What is this box called? I will next try your suggestion, but Im not a "real mechanic" like you. Thanks John
Sounds like you have a tank ventilation problem. I think the black box you are describing is the fuel pump. There should be a larger line going from the tank to the fuel pump and a smaller line from the tank that is the ventilation hose. Try cleaning out the smaller fuel line making sure it can vent properly. If you tank doesn't have ventilation tube then the gas cap is probably the vented type and not venting properly
@@Mechanical_Mind Hello, The box I'm describing is below the sear, behind the gas tank, on this model the pump is located above the valve cover. Do you happen to know what the :box: I described is called, and do you think that may be the problem with venting the gas tank? I actually have a picture of the box, but I don't see ant upload option. Thank you
I was hanging out on the riding mowers at the Home Depot with my son waiting for my wife. I found 2 brand new husky 6” crescent wrenches in the cup holder of a mower. I guess they were done hooking up the battery and forgot the tools.
I love the information, but all the slinging the camera around makes viewers dizzy. It would be great to keep the camera as still as possible and not flip it around so fast.

Thanks for the helpful video. I have a new S130 and it take a lot of pedal force to set the parking brake. I tried the parking brake on two new S130’s in the store and one was much easier than mine and the other in between mine and the other. Is there an adjustment for this? Thanks
How do you get the bolt off to change belt put back on ! The bolt is not breaking loose
Are the L120s known for snowblower belts just falling off?
Appreciate the level of detail and honestly. Thanks for putting these out there. LH Charlotte NC.
As for the JD Easy Change system, best comment I've read and have stolen, "It's some EZ change for John Deere." 🙂
How do you adjust the valves for this 22 hp engine
Sounds like the 2nd battery they gave you is bad also.

I recently purchased an E170 And took it to a local John Deere dealer and ask them about attaching a snowplow or snowblower. I was advised not to do so due to the lightweight transmission with plastic gears. What are your thoughts on this?
Great Info. Thank You.
Glad it was helpful!
I have an e130 42in deck I was told that the carb solenoid need replaced can you lend any advice on. How to do this
I am looking forward to find out how to adjust the drive belt tension, my belt always seems to be 2 inches long even though its a John Deere OEM drive belt.
The drive belts always seem to be too loose. There is no way to really adjust the tension. They just get tighter when the parking brake is released and loosen when you engage the parking brake.
Thats the way they work. Brake/clutch pedal loosens tension , tension is applied when pedal is released@@Mechanical_Mind
@@Mechanical_Mindmy drive belt is so loose that it barely moves the mower. It will not power the mower up any kind of hill….even one with a very slight incline.
Any suggestions?
Thanking you in advance.
Can you use a John Deere leaf vacuum dual bagger off a E100 on a S220 JD ?
Hi, thanks for the info you share, I'm trying to absorb all your knowledge. Will you give me info on why my S 130's gas gauge stopped working? Everything else is working fine. Thanks
Do you recommend full synthetic oil or semi blend?
I have a S 130 new from Lowes. When lifting the deck to the 4 inch setting, it's sort of tight getting it into that 4 inch slot, evertyhing lower that that seems to work fine. Suggestions?
Had a similar problem first time I removed the deck for maintenance. The linkage and deck hangers were not installed right. I removed and reinstalled the back 2 hangers and it worked just fine. Something wasn't lined up right.
Enjoyed the video, question i have a older jd Lt 160 with a 16hp kohler command are they a good machine what's your opinion on them ,thanks
Can my John Deere S130 tire run on non-turf surfaces? about 150 m from my lawn (interlock cement surfaces)
Awesome video, i own a d130 and love it…. Did u go to john deere mechanic school, ?
just got a d110 ( i dont think its plastic. it hydrostatic, has a gas pedal ) and it wont go up hill after using it twice. it went up hill just long enough for the guy to sell it to me. any idea what it can be? only 200 hrs on it
Great video!
@@Mechanical_Mind Great job on your video's. I'm looking forward to see more video's on the D130 you talked about. Thanks.

Is it worth buying a John Deere 330 with a 42 inch deck have a 22 Hp V twin briggs & Stratton motor
depends on the hours.
Good video. I do have a question however. I keep hearing that the spindle bearings are sea!ed bearings and that it does no good to pump grease onto that fitting in the housing because it just fills
Up the cavity inside but does not get into those sealed bearings.
Is this true?
Grease them. I was asked this so often that I made a video about it.

Hey this is off topic a little bit but I
Have a John Deere S130 and a John Deere S170, and I love them both they're are great little mowers. Help lol
Send me the PIN number for each mower. Its located on the frame above the left rear tire.
Please talk about greasing the spindles. I understand that the bearings are sealed and the grease fittings only shoot grease into a void and really don't do anything. Please comment.
Hey Arnold, I actually did a video on that very subject and on those very spindles.

TonyV My E130 John Deere suddenly does not even crank. Also I can push it lever in or out. Any ideas why it does not even crank.
Good explained details, this video clip so usedful, thank you much.
Thank you@@Mechanical_Mind
Hey guy! Thanks for the really good information. I have this same E130. I think I have a vapor lock, do you have a fix for that?
Hey John, thanks for watching! Id remove the spark plugs and then crank the engine over a few times. Check your oil to see if it smells like gas. Also check the fuel shut off valve on the carb is operating properly. Let me know and I'll do my best to help
Parking brake on JD S110 will not engage. Any thoughts?
The brake pedal feels the same but the brake is not holding, there is a way to adjust the brake on the left side of the transmission. It takes an Allen wrench (can't remember the size)
If the pedal is loose I would think a retainer pin has fallen out letting the pedals linkage to fall out of position.
Im surprised you didnt talk about testing the hydrostatic transmissions. For all of these lower cost tractors its the weak point. Easy to check for slipping with a quick test ride.
My D110 PTO stays engaged. The blade never stops spinning. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Not familiar with the D110. On my E160 I’d work the plunger up and down quickly several times. Unplug the connection under the hood and clean the contacts. If that doesn’t fix it you need a need plunger switch. Not very expensive.
Do you have any videos on older models? LT 180 comes to mind..
No. I basically do videos on things when I work on them. I try to cover general topics on common issues I see so my viewers can make the repairs themselves and save some time and money. Is there specific issue you are having with your mower?
How many hours should your machine have b4 the first oil change?
The first oil change should be done after 5 hours of run time. I wouldn't go past 10 hours. After that every 50 hours or annually.
Just found a E130 with 29.5 hours so basically new. They asking $1000, is that fair?
In my opinion that is a good deal but only if there is no deck or engine damage. A bent deck would cost about $800 to replace.
Appreciate the input, thank you
@@marccreamer8086 in this video I show how to remove and inspect the deck on those mowers. Its really easy. Good luck

Thanks you Eric. John Deere has stopped using those plastic transmissions altogether. Even the S100 now has a tuff torque metal transmission.
Is the John Deere lawnmower from Home Depot and Lowe’s? Are there the same as the ones that you buy at the John Deere dealership?
If its the same model, for example a John Deere Z335E. They are the same. The difference is that dealers usually do not sell the lower end/ entry level models that Lowes and Home Depot sell.

Why do my john deere tractors new and old smoke at start up sometimes jd said it normal
@@Mechanical_Mind obviously if I don’t find a parasitic drain then the battery must just be failing to charge

Im looking to buy a used JD E130. It has 340 hours on it. I have no idea if thats average or on the high end? Never owned a John Deere before
I heard those machines are built to run to around 500-1000 hours. I would buy it for the right price.
I have d130 only tuning on one cylinder is that common?

I just bought a new S-130. Noticed when looking at the mowers, you can wiggle the gas tank if there is no gas in it. Is that normal? Thanks.
Yes it's normal
Yes, very normal. These gas tanks just sit in there on a “weight scale”. The more gas the heavier & the gauge shows full. If you are close to empty, there’s no weight, the tank jossles about & shows it’s close to empty.
Hi are L120 John deer tractors looking to buy one
Hello , am i the only owner with the Easy Peel paint coming off after 1-2 yrs of ownership.
Thanks China.
i bought a conversion kit for my mower on line
Easy and fast to install too
The Box is located behind the gas tank just under the framing.
My new S130 has no cable tensioner. My belt is real loose. Anyone know how to adjust the tension?
The s130 has the electric pto, the belt should always remain the same tension( fairly taught)
Why do the John Deere's motor surge. every one i have ever had has done this after a very short time
On mowers like this, all the brands use engines from Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, or Kawasaki. Surging is usually caused by a vacuum leak, bad carb, or bad/old fuel.
E100 John Deere belt can’t get bolt loose to change it
Try working it back and forth tightening and loosening the nut. Id recommended using an impact wrench.
Thanks again! 😄
Thank you!
Thank you
