Can relate to her tbh
You know Nott's DPB.
"Caleb has never done anything wrong." Best line of the campaign.
I love the idea that none of the others get that Caleb needs to transcribe spells, so as far as they know he's just really, really into expensive paper.
I mean, makes sense, given that all the other spellcasters in the party don't have to transcribe spells
And ink don't forget the ink
Like every mage in the history of ever, " it really pays off....at higher levels."
Liam is a little over zealous with it though, there's been times he's bought a huge amount of golds worth of paper and transcribed nothing then claimed he used it all and needed more.
@@0saintclark0 Playing a wizard is really expensive though. By level 13 he's already transcribed 4000 gold's worth of spells. And that's not including spells that consume components as part of casting them. No other class needs to spend that kind of money just to use their class features.
Of course if Caleb has one defining trait, it's his unquenchable thirst for knowledge. So it makes sense that he would go to such extremes.
Mercer’s plan to keep the M9 poor.
Step one: put Laura in charge of the money
Step two: introduce pet merchant
Step three: anti-profit
Happened to us too, we thought it would be a smart idea to put the most charismatic and silver tongued member of the party in charge of the money, since they'd probably be better at the haggling and whatnot, we failed to also take into account said party member was also thick as pig shit and had a terrible memory.
Sounds like my friend when he DMs
@@bonniefazman9065 must be a good DM then. To always keep the party funds on the low while making it feel natural, that's art. If the party has no money and none of it was taken away by force or lost, then they must've spent it on what they thought was worth it.
One of the coolest ideas ever 😂
Caleb: 1000 gold of High quality paper and ink☺️
I love Caduceus’ radical honesty and how it contrast so heavily against Molly’s delightful bullshit.
klaytonrocks
I love it, the panic about how to deal with the illusion cart and he just says honestly, it’s to keep from being robbed of expensive goods.
He’s not even giving an ounce of lies
Especially when compared to Percy as well. I love looking at the contrasts between the characters from c1 and c2 (except vax/caleb they're somewhat similar but still I love caleb so its fine)
I also love the way the stats for the character have been built. INT 9 and WIS 20 I seem to remember, kind of drifting through life, sipping his tea, not necessarily understanding all that is going on but a savant for emotional intuition, he doesn't care to understand everything
“Radical honesty” and ”delightful bullshit” sum them up so amazingly well
I also feel as if Caduceus has much more reason to interact with the other players and the environment around him. Molly was great but he didn't interact with the others this much
Travis is the dad that says no to a dog, then spends more time with the dog than anyone else.
It's not that dad's don't want a dog. They just do not want to be responsible for the dog in the end. But for the most time every bodey else is starting to ignore the dog and the dad is the last one to care. And starts to get the responsibility.
so every dog good owner then?
I don't think you understand Travis.
HE LOVES DOGS! - channeling roy mustang
@@rhythm_ux see Nordvin's reply. I can add that after moving away from home and a childhood/youth of dogs, I had none for years because I could not give it the life it deserves, small apartments and long working hours. I still have no dog, but 11 years ago I adopted a mistreated ferrets and they have held my hearts ever since, but I do struggle with my conscience after I moved to Greenland, for he does not have the life he deserves- he has it better than most other ferrets, but not as he deserves.
It is called being conscious and responsible I believe, and Travis is that a LOT. He was the father of his family from a young age and is generally brought up to be responsible and caring.
@@PalleRasmussen You missed to point of my comment. It was not to add an intellectual argument. It was to make a joke connecting Fjord and Roy Mustang together using Travis's line from FMAB.
Jester: "honestly, i saw Molly's when we were in the bath house"
*Molly's spirit taking over Taliesin's body as he laughs in joy*
I imagine Caduceus is rolling so well with his perception checks because everything is so new to him that he pays attention to everything, taking it all in.
That’s a really good idea
This is so wholesome
It's actually because sometimes the die lands on a high number
@@bignumbers right? It’s so cringeworthy to see people take this so seriously. This community has a bad tendency to put way too much emotional stock in this make-believe
@@jgamer2228 lol whatever you say
Every time Caleb has to roll after he uses fire, he is literally rolling a PTSD saving throw, and I think about that a lot
This is especially realistic because his specialty is so connected to his trauma.
Fallstar i wonder if he does it to punish himself
There's a similar trend in Dimension 20's Fantasy High campaign, where a character named Adaine had to roll for anxiety attacks in intense situations!
That’s basically what having PTSD is like though, saving throw to see if you have a flashback or not! There’s alllwaaaayysss a chance
I think it's good that he only rolls it when he's killing an enemy with fire. It is flavorful and gives a mechanic to his character but if it had to happen every time, even in the middle of combat, Caleb would probably be dead by now.
Friends: get together to play DnD
Really good friends: Make jokes about the recent mother in the group having to give up her newborn son as payment to a devil in exchange for a strange ventriloquist trick while playing DnD
The kid's name is RONIN?
@@Ribula1 yes. This kid will be badass
YEET
That goes beyond strange when even Tal is wigged out enough by it to draw back.
I mean they play dnd anyway so if you ask anyone above 40 they will say they already worship the devil
When Cad used his beetles to attack I just wanna make it clear that Sam whispered "It's the British Invasion". Underapreciated. 2:48:20
Good catch.
Caduceus: *spends 400G to free a stranger*
Beau: That was a lot of money
Nott, who spent more than double that: Am I a joke to you?
Can
It was complete BS in my opinion, it really annoyed me that Nott/Sam was pressured to spend so much on a stanger. Regardless if it was on behalf of Molly or Tal bullying or BSing everyone to do it, I wish Sam/Nott wouldn't have put in so much. And if Beau had 75 left of Molly's money all of it should have gone to Gustav if they felt Molly would have wanted it (and apparently Tal did). Ugh.
@@OmANnIe totally agree. They all should've put money into Notts pocket after he dropped that much and Beau and Fjord didnt add anything.
@@Rowlurorowf I know and people said it was fair for Nott to spend so much because she had so much and because all her items had been bought for her. But all I remembered being purchased for Nott was the cloak, which Cad and Jester split the cost of. I thought that was really nice but it wasn't anywhere near 1000gp.
@@OmANnIe I agree, but this shows mentality of people in this day. I dont agree with it. Ut should be my choice to share. That is true charity and sacrifice when u give of ur own free will and not pressure or fear of cancellation by the group. I also see that its the choice of the player and Sam isn’t easily swayed by the party politics. Matt wasnt expecting it. He wasn’t prepared with a number. That is the fun in the game. Throw a wrench in the DM’s well oiled Campaign!! :(
I can't tell if Taliesin is really wise and I've never noticed or if he's just really good at making bullshit sound deep, but damn does he play high Wisdom characters well. I'm loving Caduceus
"life needs things to live" -Taliesin Jaffe
Isn't that always the same thing, some way or another?
No printer straight fax
Have you heard Percy speak? It's a mix of both dear 👌
Ethan Peterson in the words of jack sparrow
“It’s astonishing how often those traits coincide”
I just want to hear Caleb say "Big talk for someone within fireball distance" That's all I want..
Has he had a run in with a long necked dragonborn?
The references are awesome. 😂
"What's your point, person within Fireball distance?"
He has embraced the wizard memes, this is a glorious thing. Maybe once he gets more of a taste for fireball,
PhantomFox77 he’s not a Dragonborn, he’s a wiggler.
I only have one question. How on earth does Matt remember what voice he used for every character after such a long time. It's insane.
He's a genius at his job.
Speaking from 40 years of DMing
Chances are he rewatched older episodes once the party decided to head back through an area they had already been to
He keeps audio notes of those voices
I've always guessed he has a note next to each NPC's name with a reference of some kind (sounds like Barney Fife or Yogi Bear or...). Something like that. Or if he makes it up on the fly, he adds that note immediately(ish) after
I mean, he is a professional voice actor. That being said; it takes nothing away from his natural and honed talents that he is a professional; he makes it look easy, but I imagine this is years of work and accrued skills and knowledge coming to bear in what seems like seconds for the viewer.
Guy reveals that he's a pet salesman
Travis, immediately: "Oh God."
Taliesin: "My new Character is a very relaxed naturalistic firbolg. A bit out of touch with society and all about the natural order of things. He brews tea, speaks with animals and heals people. Death doesnt distress him because its all part of nature"
Matt: "Ah, so you made a Druid. Maybe a Sheperd Druid or a druid of the Land?"
Taliesin: "He Is also all about decay and compost and lived on a graveyard for years...."
Matt: "say no more, A Druid of the Spores."
Taliesin: "Nah m8, Cleric of the Grave."
Reminder that spores druid came out like half a year after the campaign started, and a few weeks after Caduceus was introduced.
@@malmasterson3890 did not know that. interesting
@@malmasterson3890 maybe spore druid was inspired by clay?
@@TheSpencermacdougall Nah, it came out with the Ravnica books for a setting where there's an entire guild of fungus and decay based druids. Caduceus would have been a dope spore druid, though.
Spencer MacDougall & revived rogue had to have been inspired a little bit by molly
Caleb: That’s a bingo
Fjord: It’s just bingo, Caleb
I shouldn’t have found that so funny
Hot Guy That’s what I thought!!
@Hot Guy That's a bingo! :-)
That whole side of the table went up in Inglorius Basterds reference. Marisha did the tap on the nose for it too
Next we need a “bing pot”!
@@electricbluetiramisu3713 very different source material lmao
Cad trying to explain to the Mighty Nein why you should confront your issues when half the party is doing the exact opposite is amazing.
The irony is hilarious
I think Clay was uniquely in a position to see past the BS. He has probably seen a lot of people's last wishes, regrets. Also the 27 in Insight check really helps lmfao. IMO that was completely in character for him to call it out as is. Maybe because he hasn't really been part of civilization and doesn't feel the need to sugarcoat it as people in a society tend to do. But I think him being a Grave cleric, being so close to the dead brings a certain perspective that the others in the group simply don't have. It was a great scene overall
I love that Caduceus' assurance that "It'll be your last meal in there" almost sounds more like threat than a promise.
I love Bryce. A soldier/peacekeeper invested in their small town and committed to taking care of the community to their utmost. They may not fight gods or thwart dragons, but they make sure life is safe and comfortable for the 50-100 people who live there and that's such a wonderful thing.
It really is and hes such a good person
the non-binary representation we all need
Ayethe yes *they are
Actually, Alfield's population is in the thousands.
Seriously, Bryce's life isn't constant life or death, but they're trying their best in war time with little resources. That is some high stress.
I just noticed that since Taliesen started playing Caduceus, his drinks appear to all be tea, if the tea bag string is any indication. That's fantastic.
That’s great... This is great... this is nice
It's honestly probably good for getting into character
He's been drinking tea for quite a long time. Maybe not always, but I think I remember him drinking it even in the first campaign.
tea is great for the voice
I like the idea of him cutting the string from a tea bag and just hanging it over the edge of a mug of hardest liquor
As sad as I am to see Molly gone, there's just something delightful about Clay's naivete, bluntness, and sense of childlike wonder at all these things he's experiencing for the first time in his life.
I think he IS experiencing it all for the first time, easily may have spent sheltered from society being a firbolg and all
I love the smile Tal keeps on his face when playing Clay. Delightful.
Much better character for Taliesin. He literally said he didn't enjoy Molly during the second half of the harvest festival. Caduseus allowed him to bring out his own sense of humor.
@@timd4524 I didn't catch that, and since I haven't seen Vox Machina I thought that his role play is at best mediocre. But know... Oh, I was so wrong.
"So it's disadvantage... and then it's stunned so advantage, and it's prone so disadvantage but guiding bolt so advantage... so it's just a regular roll." Idk why but Matt listing that off just sent me 🤣🤣🤣

Definition of a chaotic good DM
So, regular Matt Mercer then? Read you loud and clear.
Caduceus is a great addition because he doesn't panick at the mere sight of althority. Its incredible how the m9 keep jumping the gun and lying and ploting when they did nothing wrong and have very little to hide.
It's the coverup that gets you!
That's because he is the only white 😂
To be fair, their team was formed entirely because they had been put under house arrest and were under threat of being charged for something they didn't do. Most of them were criminals or fugitives even before that (Nott and Caleb met in prison and were being hunted when they met the others, Jester had to flee her hometown, Beau was a juvenile delinquent, Mollymauk admitted to doing shady things with the circus, Yasha was cast out of her tribe). Caduceus was the only one of them who wasn't around for any of that, so he's probably the only one who hasn't made a permanent association between authority and certain doom at this point.
I love how Matt always says "you manage to find your rooms". It makes me imagine the day that they have to roll to find their rooms
One day they'll have a magic mansion, and Caleb will not be merciful with its layout.
I laughed WAY too hard at this comment 😆
depends how much they drink, i guess
maybe he just gets lost in hotels or something
I honestly love how much Taliesin's role-playing of Caduceus excels at the pastel goth aesthetic; because, like.. It's lowkey super metal, but in just a really relaxed, graceful, almost gentle way.

Exactly, they were even talking about how to potentially turn the illusion off, but Taliesin rolled a natural 1 on the arcana check to figure it out. It boggles my mind that Marisha would even try the "what if we didn't know how this works?" card. She was involved in the thought process of what to do about the illusion only a few minutes before. Then again, I was surprised how confused they were by it in earlier episodes as well, testing the tarps off of the carts and expecting it to work. It seemed pretty clear to me the way Nott would partially disappear when she stepped through the illusion.
@@sjtez They can be pretty forgetful. What really gets me is when they simply don't pay attention during a conversation and several people ask an NPC the same question. Matt is far more patient than I.
@@sjtez They understood there was A illusion on the cart. They just thought the illusion made the cart look empty when in fact it made it look like there were crates of produce on it.

taliesin did exactly what i would have done. "the cart is empty, but we just have this enchantment on the cart for safety of our goods and people during sometimes uncertain roads and other travelers."
Exactly! It's not like magic is illegal, it's kinda silly the lengths characters will go to avoid being caught with magic
Isaac Stevens oh no, our cart is enchanted, time to lie, bribe or threaten the guards so the word doesn’t get out
I was also thinking this the whole time, but it's kinda part of the fun (even if cringey at times) that they hatch inane schemes for the simplest things (like Jester's traveller schemes :P)
@@isaacstevens1912 It's more that the cart originally had a nefarious purpose and they kind of got stuck in that mindset. I thought that play was genius on Tal's part. Put a totally different spin on it and defused a potentially sticky situation.
@@isaacstevens1912 I think a previous reply is part of it. But I think the main fear of being caught using magic is from Vasselheim, a city on Tal'Dorei that typically punished open arcane magic usage, as it was a city focused on the holy and the strength granted by the gods

2nd time listening to the campaign and the more I hear Gustov talk the more I suspect he knew the Devil Toad was a fiend and feeding off the crowd, but had a secret reason to keep it going. I think the "no elderly, no sick folks" wasn't just to excite the crowd.
First time through the campaign, and you're right on the money. Gustav absolutely knew what the Devil Toad was. The "No Elderly, No sick" rule was there because he was allowing the Devil Toad to passively feed on the crowds' life energies, and the impaired and elderly likely wouldn't have enough to survive the act. In exchange, Gustav got a nice terrifying beast as an attraction for his carnival. It was win-win til one old man slipped through and everyone lost.

As a high school teacher for 10+ years, I really relate to Matt's struggle to keep the group focused amid crude humor and general juvenile hijinks.
Two years late, I know. It literally made me laugh out loud that a high school teacher has similar experiences to the DM of this group of (supposedly?) adult players. 😂
The art at 3:36:26 of Shakaste just made me realize that anytime that Shakaste addresses the Grand Duchess, the way his ability to perceive his surroundings works (given that he's blind without magical aid unless I'm mistaken), he's looking at himself through the Grand Duchess's eyes when he greets the Grand Duchess. *Brain Explodes*
I was thinking along with everyone else what to do about the cart but. Caduceus’s solution made so much sense. Like it was so simple, just tell them the truth they don’t have anything to hide, but even from an outsider’s perspective I hadn’t thought of it LMAO. Love that Low INT high WIS cow man.

While watching Caleb put down a bowl of milk for Frumpkin and I was slightly questioning it. Then I remembered he is clinically unstable so it makes perfect sense.
Nothing better than a multiday journey in a covered wagon soaked through with cat diarrhea.
Well it’s not odd he just sees Frumpkin as a normal pet cat. I think it would be normal for wizards to become attached to familiars and forget they aren’t real animals and don’t need anything.
Also the fey cat doesn’t poop.
@@reedk2402 And it is no longer a covered wagon either.
I question why Matt decided Frumpkin wouldn't want milk. I understand they don't need to drink or eat, but they might just enjoy it, no? Or is there something about Fey hating food I haven't caught?
Matt's RP with Frumpkin is weird, it sometimes seems like it doesn't actually like being Caleb's pet, but doesn't have a choice. Future backstory reveal maybe?
@@dig8634 no dude cats r just like that
@@dig8634 well in older editions (and maybe even in 5e) familiars are not always bound to you out of preference. Who knows, the fey entity inhabiting Caleb's cat might not be perfectly happy with the arrangement.
Caduceus is constantly making quick thinking moves to keep the party on track. The rocks, the wagon etc.. He really is a quick thinker.
2:05:00 Taliesen demonstrates a technique for dealing with NPCs that many players would never think of. Non-confrontational honesty. Sometimes it's really no more complicated than following instructions of the traffic cop, or whatever the mundane situation entails.
I’ve attempted honesty a few times in my campaign and they’ve resulted nothing but a detriment to my party.
One example was that we deciphered some erased information about a secret project and our commanding officer asked us on a status report.
I told him we found out what the info was and showed him the paper i wrote it on. He took it and left.
The dm said that i shouldnt have done that and the party was mad at me. Like how was i supposed to know that we were supposed to keep it to ourselves?

@@dranzikenseriously. during my first campaign, my dm would often voice my character’s consciousness when i made a choice he didn’t like.
