They're two of the most familiar faces in this country: for over 25 years, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry have teamed up on 'Coach's Corner' every Saturday night. As Hockey Night celebrates its 60th season, and a new book - 'Hockey Night In Canada: 60 Seasons' - in stores, there was lots to talk about when Ron & Don sat in the red chair.

hockey night in canada wont be the same without these two, Ron MacLean and Don Cherry have been there for ever ive watched them for as long as i can remember and seen em get older, don cherrys wacky ties and Ron MacLean setting cherry up just a beautiful mix. Thanks for being the intermission entertainment i enjoyed it each time!
These 2 are great - like an old married couple. Grew up watching them in "Notown" Michigan on a TV that got 4 channels, thank God one of them was CBC Channel 9. God bless Hockey Night in Canada!

I also just remembered that awesome show that Don Cherry use to have called "The Grapevine" I think it was called.I wonder if those old shows are available on DVD? I use to watch that show all the time as a young lad with my Mom&Dad & would always watch the Don Cherry "Rock Em Sock Em" VHS tapes before my hockey games to pump myself up & watch Wendel Clark,Jon Kordic,Cam Neely,Marty Mcsorely,Bob Probert,Scott Stevens,Geno Odjick,Dave Manson,Bryan Marchment & that would get my juices flowing lol.

Ron MacLean and Don Cherry, Canada's equivalent of Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. The main difference is that Ron's puns are funny and Grapes has rare bouts of insightful genius.

I can't imagine not having Don Cherry & Ron McLean every Saturday night.Those two are one of a kind together,not even the States has anything close to these two.Terry Bradshaw & John Madden don't even come close to Cherry & McLean.I watched the CBC Don Cherry tribute show that was split up into I think 2-4 shows or something like that,but I forget his name who played Don Cherry but wow what a tremendous job that bloke did of playing Don Cherry.HNIC won't be the same without Grapes & McLean!!

He is no Bob Goldham, Goldham may not have had the comic appeal, or the personality, but he knew hockey better than almost anyone. And Ron actually knew what hockey was about, like Goldam.
What like Nick Kypreos is ? George was put in a spot where he took the brunt of CBC's bumping Ron MacLean out of that spot. Strombo does absolute best interviews which is why high quality people that don't normally do interviews only did interviews on the Strombo show. There is no reason why George couldn't excel on that HNIC show. I felt that group of Announcers didn't help pull at 100% to help ease George into that job as they were caught up with showing loyalties towards Ron Mac and Don .... CBC Screwed up by ousting Ron instead of slowly blending them into it and slowly phasing Ron out (which has to happen sometime) ....
GordieHowl CBC had nothing to do with that. CBC did sports and especially HNIC masterfully and didn't have any part of the restructuring. That all happened after rogers Sportsnet took over. I knew they would screw things up.

People always hate the "new guy". Years ago, people hated MacLean when he took over from Dave Hodge. Now people want MacLean in and Strombo out. And 10 years from now, people will want Strombo and will resent the new guy who comes in. It's always like that.

George should be applauded for addressing Cherry’s penchant for inserting subjects that DO NOT belong on a hockey broadcast.
When the US invaded Iraq, Cherry admonished Jean Chretien for not joining the alliance and not sending Canadian troops.
Cherry, as he often is, was out of his depth on that, as subsequent events in Iraq proved. The US invasion was an unmitigated disaster.
And Ron McLean diminishes himself when he acts as an apologist for Don Cherry.
And Cherry’s speech at Toronto City Hall, when Rob Ford was elected mayor, should have been an embarrassment for Cherry and the CBC. Cherry referred to Ford’s adversaries as ‘Pinkos’. Rob Ford as mayor, as Torontonians well know, was embarrassment to the city. But Cherry was there for his friend and fellow nitwit.
And I’m not entirely sure why Cherry is regarded as the guru of coaching.

In Boston, he had eleven 20 goal scorers on the team when he was provided that honour. Helen Keller could have coached that team.
