@@TheWolffAndTheMelodyIt is the final manifestation of a common European cultural unity, something that has always been a fact (many who went to war in '14 had to travel from their place of work in another country to return and fight there...) but went in oceans of blood twice and decades of suspicion.
And now, just ~30 short years after we slowly started healing at long last, we are arranged into alliances that are fighting a bloody (the bloodiest war in Europe in a long, long time) proxy war once again, this time on the fields of Ukraine and when The Powers are involved it gets really dangerous really fast.
The "Long Peace" is over and we have to realize that once more we live in an age of alliances arranged against one another and this time ~1900 is nuclear tipped.
      Best regards
      Raoul G. Kunz

Sabaton never gloryfies war, they talk about history without taking sides. They also have a separate history channel to talk more about the subject of each song. Btw, the guy who was the first to come out of the trenches was Hannes, Floor's husband. They have a daughter and are expecting a second kid soon 🙂

It was the Pope of that time, that requested a Christmas Truce to all the involved countries. But none of them wanted that. Soldiers at the front had heard about the request and at many places along the trenches, the soldiers themselves stopped fighting and declared a Truce. They did meet in no mans land. And sang together and shared gifts. Command was furious. All soldiers involved where relocated in the next weeks. Because, many could not shoot at the people they had just met. It tells us such a wonderfull story about humanity.

I think it is safe to say that with Sabaton, you will not get glorification of war in any way shape or form. (ofc there will be people who read that into it sadly)
While they do remind us of the horrors of war, the stories they tell are kind of always about the human aspect of things, heroics and respect as well to some degree.
They also do not pick sides, if something was impressive, they will have a song about it. (Bismark comes to mind)
A thing they do so incredibly well is the creation of the videos for their songs, there is always a message being told, and meanwhile they remind/teach us about this history.

Someday maybe we'll learn of the futility and horrible cost of war, and we'll figure a different way to solve our problems. It starts with respect and acceptance of other people, and their culture, but that's and entirely different discussion. Sabaton did a great job representing that ideal. This song gets me every time, it shows what happens when a moment of humanity overtakes war. Christmas Truce does not glorify war, it glorifies the power of peace in a moment during a war (One of the single most terrible wastes of life in history).
This was a real event in 1914 which occered along around 8 miles of the battlefront. Many of the soldiers could not continue, they were replaced a few days after Christmas. General orders went out to both sides that if something like this ever happened again then all involved would be on charges and would face the firing squad for cowardice. Now we are more understanding about PTSD but in both world wars it was seen as cawardice.
The Piano refrain is an inversion of the Christmas Bells. Even without seeing the video I still have the images burned into my mind, one comment How Dare You Stop while Floor Jansen was singing over the credits (Floor is Married to Hannes Van Dahl)

I knew of this from Garth Brook's song "Belleau Wood". I, like many others, cannot listen to it without tearing up. I know that there are many things in this world that I do not understand, but I simply cannot fathom this: Say I was a soldier there and lay my gun down to sing 'Stille Nacht' with the Germans, playing football with them, and then hours later go back to shooting and killing. War is absolute hell, but there is no way in this world I could do something like that. I try to remind myself of a similar fact when I come across some nasty person on the internet (or that I've met in real life) and remember that we are both members of the human race and have hearts, emotions. Thank you for the reaction video! I wrote a novel here, I suppose. I enjoy Sabaton's work. If I can recommend something that sounds interesting: Kamelot's 'Ghost Opera' or 'Nights of Arabia'.

Another commenter put it better than I ever could: Sabaton are anti-war but pro-soldier. At least 80% of their songs are about the best of humanity during war: ingenuity _(Father),_ determination _(Bismarck),_ compassion _(No_ _Bullets_ _Fly),_ bravery _(Night_ _Witches),_ or, like here, just recognising "the other side" as human. I'm not familiar with all their early material, but at least lately even the songs that are about events are about the tragedy and stupidity of war _(Sarajevo,_ _Versailles)._
I generally cry twice during this one: first when Hannes goes out into No Man's Land (sometimes I last until I see the look on Pär's face), then again when Pär is carving the date on the cross. Partly that's because when I first saw this song I had recently learned that my country had sent soldiers to fight abroad every single year since "The War to End All Wars" - that's more than a century. A war that never ends, indeed!
"Lest We Forget" might as well be Sabaton's motto. It's from Rudyard Kipling's poem _Recessional,_ written for Queen Victoria's jubilee. It got him some grief because it was (I believe) the only jubilee poem not glorifying the Empire, instead telling how all empires eventually turn to dust. Ironically, he later used his influence to get his son into the army during WWI after he had been rejected, and the young man died.
The fact that the brass on both sides had to go to extreme lengths to stop more truces in later years is itself a commentary on the humanity of the "common soldier"...

So Sabaton are great historians- they talk about all the sides. They don’t glorify war but talk about everyone who has had to participate in the tragedy of war. So… the drummer of Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen- so that is her voice during the credits.
War is not a good thing, but sometimes one has to stand up and make the ultimate sacrifice- to quote Metallica- “
To secure peace is to prepare for war. “

    @johncrwarner Год назад +2

I share your feeling about the problem of "glorifying war"
and I am always reluctant to like Sabaton
because of the themes of their songs
War is not a topic I generally choose to listen to
I often cry when I hear and listen to Sabaton songs -
they move me - this song, their cover of 1916
both bring tears to my eyes EVERY TIME.
It is a deep problem with getting the nuances of history
into a song of less than 5 minutes
and that is why they have a lot of credits
which usually includes a lot of extra information.
I have to say that when I listen to a Sabaton song
    triggers my "hermeneutics of suspicion"
(a term coined by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur)
and I am listening closely to all the words
and the music to check for "glorification"
    intentional or accidental.
I also find it interesting that some of their songs
about Swedish kings then appear more problematic
mostly because I learnt about the particular kings

What always gets me? That even in the hellish environment of a warzone, that the light of humanity can still glow, even in the darkest of times.
And the one comment I've read that will always stick with me is one from a gentleman in which he said that if not for this historical event, he would not exist, as his grandfathers met each other on the battlefield that day. How astronomically remote are the odds that someone could connect their existence to something as significant as this?
And Wolff, it isn't about glorifying war. It isn't about glorifying what happened. It's about remembering what happened, so that it isn't forgotten. I mean, how good are Sabaton as storytellers, when I can go from watching the video for Final Solution, to watching your reaction for Christmas Truce? It is that ability to get at your soul and make you consider not just the history itself, but how complicated, terrifying, and wonderful people, both individually and collectively, we really are. How deep and nuanced and faceted our natures really are. To see the fact that no matter what part of history you learn about, our natures, despite our progression and technology and understanding, really have not changed.
Which is why what was carved in the cross really needs to be understood: "Lest We Forget." Because it is all about rememberence. Because those who were there, their lives mattered just as much as ours do now.

War should never be glorified. However, the brave soldiers who served, fought, and especially those who died for their country deserve all the glory. Glorifying war for the sake of war in any sort of way is just sick and twisted in my opinion.

Enjoyed your reaction to this great piece of art. Sad that you did not let the outro continue to the end. Hannes ' wife's, Floor Jansen, gorgeous soaring vocals at the end take this song to a whole new level of beauty and emotion. I tear up during the outro every time. Sabaton has captured not only this moment of history but that special bond that all us veterans share with each other, even across opposing sides (20 year veteran here, luckily never saw up close combat). Sabaton worked long and hard at getting the song and video right to honor this story.
I will push back a little on the concept that war is never the answer. There is true evil in the world and sometimes the only way of dealing with that evil is to destroy it. I am not naïve enough to think all or even most wars are necessary but some are. Those who fight these wars know the true cost and are more reluctant then most to actually want to go to war.

This truce wasn't authorized by the military commands on either side in fact it was a spontaneous act where the German soldiers took the intiative. After the truce many of the soldiers refused go back fighting which is very understandable. However it wasn't popular among their commanders and some acutally got executed due to not obeying orders.

Yours was a good "rant", we need more of those, not less, as far as I am concerned! Also, in the stopped frame you re-winded to, the black piano with the cross born before it always reminds me of a casket. I think it was intentional by the brilliant director!
Last but not least, the wordless outro (by Floor Jansen, no less) belongs in full to the song and crowns it in radiance. Go back to listen to it till the last second. This song is epochal. As we know, it did not prevent war - art hardly ever does, 'cause sadly, people responsible for wars do not heed messages like these - but the world is a better place for it.

I know you didn't mean that Sabaton glorify war, but there are definitly those who have said things like that and i feel t his song and En livstid i krig (especially the swedish version) is the perfect counter arguments, but while En livstid i krig is about the futility of war and how it affects a lone solider that knows he will most likely will die forgotten never to return, this is about celebration of a speck of humanity in one of, if not the worst wars ever (perhaps not in total lives lost, but in how brutal it was for the soldiers and then how futile it all turned out to be as it was only the prelude for WW2). One thing that is pretty interensting is that the begining with Carol of the bells have the scale (i think i'm using the correct word, another reactor I saw mentioned it and im not an expert in music terminology) reversed giving it a slightly "off" sound, so basically saying "it is christmas, but everything is horrible and wrong" and then when it turns to hope instead of despair they change it to the correct scale.

    • @criwall
      @criwall Год назад +1

If you havn't done En livstid i krig yet, definitly do the live version "SABATON - En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg)" (remember to put on the subtitles since it's in swedish and you want to understand the lyrics) Perhaps as a double feature with the english version "A lifetime of War", they are entirely different in theme and lyrics, but with the same instrumentation.

    This song is Powerful.
“Lest We Forget”- is Sabaton’s mantra. They are not political but sing about sacrifices, heroics on mostly military history . Sabaton History is their YT channel and explains the history of a lot of their songs. I do suggest you do the animated STORY videos of Night Witches or my personal favorite No Bullets Fly. These animated story video are a combination of Sabaton music video and Sabaton History. Do make sure you play the entire videos thru especially No Bullets Fly as it is a unbelievable story with a incredible ending. Good luck on your journey with Sabaton but the magic of Sabaton is not how great their music is, learning about the sacrifices of a few so all of us can be free and happy is the greater message!!!!!
