  • In the US, two-thirds of low wage workers report some form of wage theft every week - whether that means being cheated out of hours worked, paid less than the minimum wage, or not being paid at all. Fault Lines investigates wage practices in the restaurant industry, to find out what happens when workers are not paid what they are legally owed.

Minimum wage in Australia is $20.00 an hour and each sector has an award wage , so if your a nurse that sector has an award wage which might be $35.00 an hour so you cannot be paid less than the award

In a democracy, Adrian Gonzalez would be behind bars. So would the operators of 84 percent of the nearly 9000 sit-down restaurants that the US labour department found to have breached wage laws. Unfortunately, we know whose side the law is on. We workers don't have anything to lose but our chains.

Hes driving a Caddilac Escalade, someone should repo that lac, sell it and give the employees the money. This isnt the USA that as a child I was raised in and taught to be proud of. They also cheat gas station clerks of which I am one of. USA get it together, before people rise up and demand what is rightfully ours. The workers.....

This reminds me of my uncle & father who worked in the restaurant industry in NYC in the '50's. They were immigrants (legal) after the War. They were told to work Sunday or not to bother to come in Monday (7 days a wk.) & they were not paid for Sunday's work. When they went on strike, the restaurant hired cops to bust heads. They wound up getting arrested for being on a picket line but charges were dropped. Everything old is new again, SOS.

in my country, if any unscrupulous restaurant owner exploits any worker, words will get out quickly and customers will not patronize the restaurant.
at the same time, the restaurant owner will find it hard to hire workers to replace those who quit. soon that restaurant will run out of business and close shop.

I literally shrieked in laughter when that sleazy Florida state senator tried saying workers in Florida are treated better than workers in Malaysia.
Well, I'm in Kuala Lumpur right now (and lived in Florida for over a decade) and I can tell you that the average worker here is MUCH happier than in Florida. lol

  • @jaelynn7575

Now, I am never going to be going to FL ever again! Not when the state treats their workers this way! The American people need to learn to stand together and boycott when necessary! We ALL need to cancel our ISPs if Net Neutrality is destroyed in a few days. Just temporarily we need to make this sacrifice and we need to do it over Christmas! WE MUST Hurt their bottom line. Wake up! Get a landline and read books for a month or two! It won't kill ya!

So you can't put an "employer" 'in prison for not paying workers under the allegation that the employer cannot pay. How do we know they cannot pay, where is the proof! They should have their business closed liquidated and funds dispersed first to the unpaid workers with interest.
However, here is my reason for commenting! People go to prison for unpaid taxes, but not an employer for not paying his obligations.

If your tips don’t equate to what you would’ve made with the state minimum wage, then they have to pay you by the state minimum for the hours worked. But if your tips are higher then you get the $2-$3 an hour.

It's been this way ever since I joined the American "service workforce" in 1974. If you are an attractive young female, you will also be expected to furnish free sex-on-demand to your employers as well as having your paycheck stolen by them. The exploitation of workers grows WORSE every year in the USA. Thing is, we haven't become more "competitive" in the world economy as a result. Pure greed motivates the moneyed and powerful, here.

    Tipping an employee:
1- Enables employers to keep stealing perpetuating wages theft.
2- Enables employees to stay quiet and allow the behavior.
DONT TIP and push the lazy employee to revolt against the crooks.

That woman can complain all she wants but if what she has to offer isn’t worth more than minimum wage she’s not gonna get it. Raise it more and you will price unskilled workers like her out of the market. If the skills you have aren’t marketable that’s your fault.
