Bethany Main- It's called a slide (glass slide in this case) for playing slide guitar, like the title implies. But didn't You watch the video? I guess You should've grasped it by then ; )
Thanks so much for the shout out at 5:20 Guthrie! I'm deeply honoured that a musician of your amazing caliber would give a hoot about anything I did so it really means a lot.
Thanks for the great lesson and explanation of what you're doing. Wonderful playing as usual. But there is one thing that bothers me these days about slide instruction: Duane Allman was not the only guy to ever play slide/bottleneck style guitar. He pioneered that style of single- and two-note, dampened melody and was singlehandedly responsible for the popularity of it. Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, Warren Haynes, et al, are all great and disciples of this style. But using the slide on the little finger was the way most of the original bottleneck players from the South did it. They did it from necessity, because they had to play not only slide but also chords and runs. They were, in essence, one man bands. If all you have to do is play slide guitar, then the Duane style is the best. It's just not the only style. Putting the slide on your little finger is not a mistake for many people. It's a choice and they do it for a reason. In general, I say whatever you are most comfortable is the right choice. Some do not want or need to go for the highly technical and advanced styles of the modern day masters but love the old school jangle of open tuned, Elmore James and Muddy Waters styled slide guitar. It worked for them and they became legends of The Blues. They did it from necessity, as did the earlier, folk blues artists typified at the top by Robert Johnson, Son House, and Bukka White. The beauty of all these stylings is, as you mentioned, it's most like the human voice expressing emotion. Also the closest to violin sounding music as you get to the highest octaves. No frets to get in the way of that pure, high violin-like tone, especially on those notes that are off the fretboard!
Two things you said don't do is, Ditch the pick Don't put the slide on the little finger. Watched Dai Pritchard play over a hour of slide Guitar playing last night with Rose Tattoo and he did both of what you said not to. Sounded pretty awesome to me....
Pretty sure he's just giving tips for people beginning to play slide. He says that multiple times: ''if you're new to this, try...'' If you have a ton of experience and you find using a pick works for you, then go for it, but if you are new to slide maybe try experimenting with your approach.
Thanks GG! Yeah the middle finger position is the most versatile IMO if you want to mix it up with conventional phrasing. I'm totally new to slide and been contemplating on which finger to use... Middle finger it is!
Just bought a little half-length slide for my pinky, for very occasional licks in certain songs just to give the audience a flavour of it. I've never really listened to any slide Blues. Trust Guthrie to know exactly what I needed to set me on my way! Thanks.
Good job....So what are you using to raise the string level a little? a make-shift device you made yourself, or something you bought. I saw one device online that looked like a capo but it also did not receive very good reviews. Thanks....
Whether he's using it for weed, hash, tobacco or whatever the hell he wants, who cares? It doesn't remove an inch of class from this intellectual godlike guitar god.
I hate that damping tech. I like over ringing strings. You have chops, you're a great player. It reminds me of arguments I used to hear between David Tannenbaum and David Russell. Russell loved prepping each finger which amounted to damping technique like you do Tannebaum preferred large free motions and over ringing sounds. I gotta say I prefer the latter.
Me too, I prefer the authentic over ringing style. Don't know why this guy doesn't get a synthaxe or something if he doesn't like the guitars inherent natural sounds. He relies far too much on props such as the rizlas, the hairband etc.
@@jasonkeith9317 you are correct. He mainly wore it on his pinky, especially when using open tunings and with a brass slide. However when he does the song "secret agent," which is in standard, most videos I've seen of him play it live he wears it on his ring finger and used a glass slide
literally, in 6 minutes, he gave me more practical advice than I've ever been able to find on how to get started playing slide! SO HELPFUL!
Many people can play.. few can play and communicate what they are doing
So true!
It’s going to take me hours to absorb the information packed in these 6 minutes.

MARVEL AT HOW IN TUNE IT IS...hopefully.😂😂😂😂 slide guitar jokes

+Burak Ertuğrul Güney I think he use the Bottle slide from Dunlop.
I never liked slid guitar like this day
Man. A Thousand thanks. Clear explanation from a humble master
This is without a doubt the BEST beginner slide lesson in the history of guitar lessons
3:39 that's what my life sounds like
This is actually the best beginner slide lesson I’ve seen. Thank you.
3:39 this is how i play with slider

rolling papers, lol!
hazor777 Haha I caught that too 😂
Knew it! Haha
@@DrBanzaiPhd You know in England they're mostly used just for cigarettes
The man uses rolling papers for his slide, what a hero
Yes, now I need to stop and pick up a pack of papers so I can practice my slide.
its not just any rolling paper, its RIZLA
Guthrie Govan is one of the greatest gifts to guitar, without a doubt. The Master.
I love it when he mentioned Brett Garsed.

3:23 Amazing Grace?
Best tip on raising the string height. I don’t want to set up my guitar different and this helps me get my lips wet
Technique is everything in slide. Vocabulary comes later
Two things you said don't do is,
Ditch the pick

If you tie a string around your finger real tight, you can make it turn purple.
That muting technique blew my mind! Thank you, man!
Gary Rossington does the same thing with Free Bird. He also tunes alittle different. But this here is gold! Thanks.🤟. And just say no to drugs....🤪
Guthrie manages to be so impressive, and simultaneously so informative. I'm better at guitar for watching his videos.
5:52 The first Noel.
Marvelous advices from the master, as always!
This guy is not from earth
“Let then enjoy that note and marvel in how in tune your guitar is”😂
Hopefully 😂😂

You just need a light touch....no need to raise the action....
0:34 sweet😏
good lesson, fantastic player when he gets into it.
Goddamn this is good! Can anyone name the guitarists is mentioning? Cant figure out how their names are spelled
Brilliant Video. Thanks
He has got the perfect slide guitar 😊 LES
Thanks so much for the shout out Guthrie! You're a bloody legend and I really hope we get to enjoy an ale or two soon mate.
Guthrie The Guitar Guru Govan!
He played licks from the Thunderbird Theme, from the Hans Zimmer Tour.
5:43 legendary moment

By far the best tips on slide guitar I've ever watched.

I think they're rolling papers lol
I looked this video up again just to remember what he used to slide under the strings, didn't remember it being a pack of papers, lmao
Best slide guitar tutorial for me so far!
Thank you!
he just had an old lady singing gospel on his guitar!!!! So true how it can imitate human vocals
That vocal technique is pretty rad!
ZigZags and the middle finger...I’m listening
Good tip about the middle finger slide method. Thank you.
How could someone even manage to dislike this video
Excellent instruction for this beginner; thank you.
That was really helpful. Thanks
Great lesson, thank you!
Great. Thanks much, Guthrie.
Guthrie, sir. Hats off to you You are the real McCoy.
Just info,no bullshit.👏
cool
@NTyran932 Sonny Landreth
Thank you :)
No problem!
6:08 -Because of biology & the way your hand is built !!
Very profound for a guy with a pack of Zig Zags stuck under his strings!! Fun to watch tho

yes

Guthrie you're the best, man :)
If you dont mind me asking, what is that thing on his finger called? And what is it for??
thats a slide
He needs a more badass guitar for those sweet riffs, lol
Very Good the Video...
What is the classical melody hes playing at 5:55 to 6:01 ?
Sounds kinda like noel
00:45 Courage The cowardly dog show?
Great...
Never knew he played slide
He can play everything
Legend
I learned slide using the Rory Gallagher method - let it rip using my middle finger - and I still have my other fingers to play bar chords
I don't think Rory wore his slide on his middle finger.

Thanks!
So do i not press so hard?
You want to press as little as possible while still making a tone to avoid noise. The easiest way around this is higher action and/or thicker strings
@@eoghanmyers2330 thank i have a kiesel low action but i kind of figured it out like a pinch harmonic aproach
Who's the guy he's talking about please? Couldn't find him!
At 4:36
Sonny Landreth
