  • It's time again for the annual Perth Pinup Prom which means despite having plenty of dresses hanging in my closet, I want to sew one. Today I share my process of sewing a 1950s-inspired cupcake prom dress using the Liz Dress Pattern from Charm Pattern by Gertie. It was quite the process with many challenges along the way but I'm in love with the colour

This is probably my favorite video of yours! The realness factor involved...from hitting walls, feeling off, troubleshooting problems, and just showing the ups and downs of the process...it's refreshing to see! And I loved seeing your sense of humor thru it all. The final design is stunning, truly.

Difficulties under time limits is particularly demoralizing and frustrating. You did a great job of persevering!
And I loved the quick ad and movie references.😅

I LOVE that you included parts that didn’t go perfectly and were honest about your thoughts! It makes me feel better about not having perfect projects- not a lot of other creators share their low points which kinda makes me feel like I shouldn’t have low points… 🤔

The dress looks lovely on you, but I do get what you're saying... sometimes the vision we have does not translate exactly in our projects. This pattern scares me, the bodice looks very difficult to make so I applaud your persistence and determination 👏 ❤❤

I just discovered and subscribed to your channel. My goodness, you look like Vivien Leigh in that dress! I understand you weren't completely happy with the result, but it's a very pretty dress and you looked lovely!! I admire your patience; I would have been throwing things and stamping my feet!😂

It looks beautiful and to a casual observer the bodice looks amazing.

Overall, I would say you do more for the dress than it does for you. Having said that, it looks beautiful and it is done well enough that you could tell people it was store-bought. Only the people who know you well and are also sewers would know that you would not have bought it. Sometimes when I feel ambitious, I make myself watch an authentic sewing experience like this one so I can start with my eyes open. Your video was like a walk down memory lane, except I can look back and realize how much I learned from and enjoyed sewing instead of just judging myself about the error part of trial and error. Good on you, and please don't give up. You are a very talented sewer, and I am cheered by the outcome, You have the right stuff for couture and stand up comedy!

The dress turned out really pretty! As a sewist myself, I know that feeling when you have a vision in your mind and it just doesn't quite get there. If you make another and want to use satin, maybe try double sided bridal satin for a bit more structure. Since it's a bit thicker it might prevent the puckering. You're braver than me using the ruffled fabric on the skirt! Overall I love how it turned out..very pretty!

That looks like it was such an undertaking. How many hours do you have in the dress. It’s really quite lovely.

The dress is pretty. I think you'd like it better if you hadn't gathered the ruffle part at the top. Think if it would have been cut in a way like a circle skirt you probably would have loved it. I know you could've because the ruffle direction prevented you to cut it that way.

Honestly, I don't know what happens to the Liz dress when you have a time constraint.. I made my third one in two days just before a Frocktails event and so many things went wrong.. It was wearable and I got tonnes of compliments, but all I could see were the flaws. There is something nice about wearing a freshly made garment to an event, though. Yours truly does look stunning! It reminds me of Elizabeth Taylor's iconic green shelf bust dress. Thank you for being so real in your sewing adventures.
