Years ago, I could not find anyone who would do the scissors-top on my 72 impala, so I learned to do it myself. What a nightmare, but two tops later, I can do it!

Thank you SO very much for sharing this video!!!! I didn't know WHAT the white strings were for on my daughter's replacement top for her 2006 vw beetle!!! All I have to do is string the tension cables through them, and THAT will probably take the pucker out of the bottom sides of the top!!! Still have it under the carport so no rain gets to it.

I helped my neighbor install a top (just the last part) on his Honda S2000. It was ridiculously tight and not fun at all. I guess I figured they were all super tight to begin with. Thanks for the tips!
Im about to have mine replaced and when I spoke with a well experienced dude today, he said that they always stretch it out for a day before installing any tops. I have absolutely no experience with top install, but figured I'd relay after reading your comment.

Hello Eccentric, I think that can depend on who is manufacturing that top. A famous name brand that fits right the first time or a cheap Chinese made Amazon top that never fits right? Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I am uncertain, this is just what was relayed to me from someone who's family has been doing it for some time. But again I have no clue for he didn't elaborate unfortunately but I also didnt ask. Lol. When I get it done I will be sure to do so and try and relay. But I am in no which way shape or form knowledgeable on convertibles

How long would you say on average does it take you to install a top? It’s something I’m still improving on and want to check my times. Thanks for the tips!

When drilling inside of a car, put a moving blanket or towel down. All those shavings can cause troubles down the road like clogging up drip or weep holes.
Hello Orvin, I suppose you can do that, I am a business and keep things going. I use a vacuum. In 43 years, I have never seen clogged drip or weep holes due to drill shavings that make it past the carpet. Just saying', I keep things real. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery I have only been doing tops and upholstery for 11 years. But I do get cars that wont drain rain and I do find shavings, nutz and bolts and fabric. I use a steamer a lot on reviving boat cushion foam, but never thought to use it on tops. So I appreciate that tip...good work man!

Getting ready to buy a new top for my 87 Camaro im thinking of spending the extra money to get a canvas top instead of vinyl in your opinion is it worth it. Love the content has helped me get a few ideas for my car.😊

Ever done a 1994-1998 Ford Mustang Convertible top. I'm kinda learie about trying it myself but nobody within 8 hours of me does it. I have plenty of experience in the automotive industry (about 20 years) but not much upholstery experience 😢. Any advice before me and a few very experienced mechanics attempt it at my works garage over the weekend. Ps I have no garage to do it in but I could put a cover over it in case it would rain.thanks
Hello Jackie, THE MOST important thing is to start by getting your rear bow hight correct. Everything else will fall into place. Extra tip, be sure to get a famous brand top like EZ On or Robbins from topsonline.com Don't buy some no brand name top from Amazon thats made in China. Last tip, read any instructions! My 2003 T-Bird has a plastic window for the soft top. Can I replace the soft top with a Glass/heated window and the convertible top still go up and down?

What brand of tops do you like that are two piece that actually fit the old cars? I see a lot of aftermarket tops that the top does not cover the rubber window gaskets.
I have trusted Robbins and EZ On brands for 40 years. Never buy a top from Amazon, Made in China.

@@dewholdingsllc1050 Both the Robbins and EZ on would be sewn with the UV thread. I have made so many tops myself, mostly in the 1980 and 1990's. I have made tops such as Duesenberg, Auburn, Cord, Packard, and Cadillac. In those days there were no such things as top kits. You can see 43 years of my work on rudolphsupholstery.com

@@oldschoolautoupholstery I honestly think the ambient heat will take care of it though it will take longer,steam heats and loosens, the sun will do the same thing just take more time. That steam tool is a really nice thing to have, makes top look more professionally done. Good job.
@@johnnycee5179 If you have ever seen a wrinkle in a convertible top, that means both ambient air and the sun never removed the wrinkle. It really needs to get hot. I lived in Phoenix for 35 years and even a 120-degree day would not take out a wrinkle. You can try it though, wouldn't hurt.
My chief question is: what's the cost of labor??? Separate from the actual cost of the convertible top assembly???
Hello my friend! The cost of labor depends on what someone wants to charge. One way to find out is to call upholstery shops in your area. They will tell you for sure.
