Terribly underrated song… this is a great example of Metallica’s amazing songwriting. It took me a moment to realize the lyrics “or are you unforgiven, too?” has a double meaning as “Unforgiven II”.
Underrated? Who isn’t able to recognize that this is one of their best. I am an OG but this one hammers all the classics. And I know which songs to name to be recognised as an OG Metallica fan, but for me I prefer Death Magnetic over 80% of their albums.
James explained in So What: "Unforgiven 2 was recorded with two guitars, the clean parts in the verses was the B-Bender and and the heavy distorted parts was the KL Explorer (the guitar he's using in this performance), so it would have been impossible to keep changing like that in a live setting because you can't stop and start, so I just used the KL live, which sounded good, as the B-Bender I have is stock with no EMGs which are in all my main guitars. I wish I did that in '97 during that show! That and Kirk playing in tune would have helped! But yeah the first time we played UF2 was brutal."
Question I’m not musically knowledgeable but I know for unforgiven he sets up the acoustic on the mic and he has his explorer around his shoulder. Couldn’t he have a similar set up?
@@thedangerdave7167 When he plays the Unforgiven on the regular acoustic, it's on a stand. This wouldn't work for Unforgiven 2 because with a B bender, you need to be wearing it on a strap to use the B bend function
@@kcguitar9307 no you cant, b benders bend chords similar to a steel guitar. Its pretty much impossible to bend the b a whole step while in a chord shape
@@Opticillusion160 no not bending in the chord shape...just making a slightly different arrangement so that you can bend the note..I had done this really long ago and it sounds similar to the original
I find singing with my eyes closed helps me focus on remembering the lyrics. When you get really good at guitar, it becomes a reflex and not a thing you have to think about. For James, it's just a matter of him closing his eyes on multitasking singing and playing.
Lay beside me and tell me what they've done And speak the words I wanna hear to make my demons run The door is locked now but it's open if you're true If you can understand the me then I can understand the you Lay beside me, under wicked sky Through black of day, dark of night, we share this, paralyzed The door cracks open but there's no sun shining through Black heart scarring darker still but there's no sun shining through No there's no sun shining through, no there's no sun shining What I've felt, what I've known Turn the pages, turn the stone Behind the door, should I open it for you? The “She lay beside me
But she’ll be there when I’m gone”
is beautiful
The best part, my demons run
Fact and now I see the sun

Finally , good video and audio quality ... thank you !!!
Love that he almost sings it completely through eyes closed
The unforgiven trilogy connects to James childhood and life
So this is a emotional moment for him everytime
And this is his favourite song, as I heard.
He’s looking down at the lyric monitor my man. They barely learned the song properly.

If I die this will be my funeral song! Most beautiful song ever existed on earth!
That was great. Fantastic performance. They flopped this one at the Billboard awards in 97, but they finally figured the track out. Epic
