Janis did not just sing the music. She was the music. I feel blessed to have grown up in the musical world of the 60s and 70s and the likes of it will never be repeated.
Janis had one of the most unique & powerful voices with a lot of grit. Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. She had a lot of great songs in her short life such as "Me & Bobby McGee", "Piece Of My Heart", "Down On Me", "Little Girl Blue", "Summertime", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over", "Mercedes Benz" etc.
Basically the whole "Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits" album with "Mercedes Benz" tacked on. We absolutely wore out that album the summer of 1982 between my junior and senior year of high school (best summer of my life, lol).
I have idolized this woman for over 50 years and she will always be my number one female singer😊😊😊 the only one that can come close to her in my opinion is Beth Hart😊
Janis is one of those rare singers who can make you emotional no matter what they are singing. She poured her soul in every song she sang. I see that someone wrote out a great list for you, Piece of My Heart is one of my all-time favorites of hers, and Summertime. But she was an original and an incredible loss when she passed.
No one like her. First time I saw her- July 5th, very late, after 2 days of 100 degree Georgia heat, she came on stage, immediately the crowd on their feet, energized. Then, later that year, in concert, another amazing performance! I was 18, in love with Janis. Still am. What made Janis so great, apart from her voice and talent, was that she was so Real!
I am so beyond jealous that you were old enough to see her before she died. I was only 6 y/o and when I got really turned onto her, it was 11 years later with her greatest hits album, which we wore out and still never got sick of it.
@sheila1965troubles thanks for your comment, I was lucky enough to see many top Rock & Roll acts back then. Not expensive like it is now. I'm glad you found Janis and enjoyed her unique talents.
The big beautiful smile on Nick's lips says it all. She's just so special and incredibly entertaining. I love artists who are truly unique and you know who it is the second you hear that voice. Thanks, Boys.
There's a doc about the Canadian Festival Express - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival_Express. Excellent doc with tons of great bands from back then with lots of behind the scenes footage of jams going on between train stops and the non-stop partying as well as the hassles the funders of the tour had to go through to get the train rolling, lol.
Loved your reaction! You would be totally blown away if you were to watch her perform Ball & Chain live at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. It too is an experience!
I can only imagine if she had lived longer. She was such a tortured soul, with so much talent. I loved her then, and still do. Drugs are poison, and don't affect just the addict. It affects the whole world - we've been deprived of so many because of it.
She is saying to the man she loves that when he gets done traveling the world trying to find himself, he will someday figure out that he will find himself back in her arms and like a fool she will welcome him back with open arms.
I'm 76 years young, and I saw them twice in the late 60's and both times she was chugging "Southern Comfort" straight out of the fifth. She was AWESOME !! I always considered her the best female singer with the worst band, but I still loved them.
She does best in her live performances because she can improv her songs and use her voice to its fullest potential and emotional grip. Her studio versions are more held back. But most of all she clearly likes performing and singing for people, real people in an audience. She has said this in many of her interviews.
Janis is one of my favorite singers of all time. Great reaction! I also recommend; -'Maybe' and 'Raise Your Hand' (live from Ed Sullivan Show) -'To Love Somebody' (live from Dick Cavett Show) -'Summertime' and 'Work Me, Lord' (live from Stockholm '69). -'Little Girl Blue' (live from Tom Jones Show)
The GREAT Janis, queen of the blooz, still missed so much even today. I will ALWAYS love this woman's singing, always makes me get goose bumps and chills. Guys - PLEASE do her version of "Ball and chain" live at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. It will change your world and make you fall in love with her forever ❤
Would love to hear/see them cover the Live Bullet version of "Travelin' Man/Beautiful Loser" That two song combo absolutely knocks me flat every time I hear them.
This was when she was in Toronto you cut out the part where you can see a Canadian flag behind her😊😊😊 I love this woman to me there's nobody better in the world living or dead that sings like her😊😊😊
She is more multidimensional than your first impression might imply. I think you'll like Ball & Chain more (LIVE). (But don't judge by the guitarists avant garde opening. THAT is not how the song is going to continue. She takes it down two notches form Cry Baby, but it is still full of her ability to deliver intense emotion. These 2 are some of her belting songs. She doesn't always go to this category. Like on "Me and Bobby McGee", the song is a completely different style of song. And happy. And then there are still other performances with more traditional singing for you, from Joplin, where you you would hear that she does sing more "traditionally" really well, too, and then also, she sure can sure pull her load in a duet.
When Janis' death was announced I was 13 at a sleep over with a group of my best friends. We heard it on the radio and cried our eyes out for the rest of the night. We knew in our schoolgirl hearts that we had lost an ally. RIP Janis
The intensity is rather intense, isn't it? I'm familiar with Janis in general, but somehow I think I never heard this one! She kind of reminds me a bit of a female Joe Cocker, just dripping with emotion and completely unique. Thanks guys.
The story is, that what she's singing here is true, and that he was coming home to her. They were to meet in the hotel she was staying at, the morning after she died. From a recent documentary made about her life.
The thing about Janis, aside from the fact that she could sing from low to high and every shade of raspy in between, she was singing every word, every song with everything she had, every time. She tore her chest open, grabed her heart and let it out for you to get every time she took the mike. Why don't we have any artists that come anywhere close to that level of soul and commitment nowadays ?
@@GregoireCoste Not cynical, but simply correct (if I may say so). When listening to Janis I sometimes think she puts too much into it, and I feel like I am a vampire, sucking away her life. Nobody can put that much into a performance for very long. Janis herself said she could sing for only about 35 minutes.

I wasn't sure how she was going to translate to a young audience. She was unique and intense and stoned 🤣. She burned it at both ends with drugs and booze and it took her out. A shame.
When you do Ball and Chain,*please* it HAS to be the Live at Monterey Pop. It HAS to be. It's iconic. And thank you for putting up a reaction to a female. I quit*ever* watching a few previously favored reaction channels (like the A&A channel), since they seem to be so prejudiced against females. When they coined the phrase "left it all on the stage", they must have had Janice in mind. She was always raw, soulful, and authentic, but if you'd like to hear a more commercial-sounding Janis, the extremely popular "Me and Bobby McGee"--with great boogie piano--is a good option.
I love Pearl, every song is pure and uniquely Janis. I think it’s some of her best work. I still have it in my album collection from the 60s and 70s. I hope you will review more of the songs on it. You won’t be disappointed. Ball & Chain and Piece of My Heart with Big Brother & the Holding Co are a couple of my favourite live performances.
I got on a site that was a music critiquing page discussing the Donald Fagen song "The H Gang." One commenter complained that Christians would attack the tune for its inference to heroine. That was the most recent comment, and already 4 years old, so I didn't bother to respond, but I had to wonder. So many musicians from that era died from heroine abuse, you'd think that had they found Jesus, they might still be kickin' and singing today...
‘They’ didn’t ‘let’ her go…Janis did herself whenever she want, however she wanted. And the audience loved her! From the first time she stepped on a stage she blew them all away.
I know I’m almost alone on this, but I greatly prefer the studio versions of Janis to the live ones. Likewise, I would have liked the studio version here.
