More FAKE Bob's Burgers DVDs! An Updated Overview - How to Spot Fakes?

  • Since I was recently scammed on eBay by a seller who claimed to have legitimate DVDs of the more recent Bob's Burgers DVD releases, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to do a comparison. In this video, we will be doing a follow-up to some content I published in 2018. This time, the fakes have advanced slightly - but that doesn't mean there aren't any noticeable signs that you can recognise. Comparing DVD releases of season 7, this video aims to show how to spot the difference. Have you experienced problems with fake DVDs? Let me know in the comments! Funnily enough, those initial bootleg sets were what inspired me to create my own Simpsons Blu-rays of Season 21 onwards, slipcovers and all.

    I just got into Bob's Burgers and was looking for dvd seasons in the wild. I found 3 and 4 (the only two I own as of writing this) from a used bookstore and I watched this video to make sure they were real. They are, the barcode I have on the back is the Amazon demand print one for both copies, thanks again for making this video, it's definitely informative and good to watch since I'm trying to find these dvds for my own personal collection. (And so I can watch it whenever we don't have wifi working due to snow...)

    It’s pretty ironic that the bootlegs only look legitimate because the amazon ones are already officially licensed bootlegs, so it’s already extremely easy to replicate the packaging/discs

    Hopefully olive films or shout factory would release the rest officially on dvd and maybe even rerelease earlier seasons too (I am aware that seasons two to ten were officially released through dvdr)

    Something odd about my season 2 dvd, which was shipped and sold by Amazon that I got a little over 2 years ago is that the bottom of the discs are actually silver instead of purple

    • @dvdreviewsstudios

      Huh maybe they changed the manufacturing quality? Silver backs will last a hell of a lot longer than purple. Fingers crossed it's legit!

    So Amazon used to press real silver-back DVDs for some of its MOD titles, usually before Father's Day and Christmas. Pressed silver-back DVDs are actually cheaper per disc than burned purple-back DVD-Rs, but you have to press at least 500 at a time. So when Amazon knew it was going to be running a holiday sale and would likely sell a ton of copies in a short period of time, they would spring for the pressed silver-back discs. There are Fox, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, and Universal sets that I'm aware of Amazon pressing real sets of in this manner, and I wouldn't be surprised if there are more I'm not aware of.
    I have Bob's Burgers season 2 through season 5 as official/legitimate silver-backed DVDs from Amazon US, and besides me knowing I purchased them directly from Amazon US, independent ways of verifying their legitimacy include:
    - "Discs Made In Mexico" printed on the shrinkwrap
    - "IFPI KK##" physically pressed into the clear plastic at the center of each DVD (a tracking mechanism that shows where discs were physically produced, KK## belonging to Technicolor Mexico, a legitimate pressing facility)
    - two rings of barcodes on the bottom of each disc (each ring represents a layer, and these real discs are dual-layered, whereas the bootlegs are always single-layer as a cost-cutting measure)
    - if you scan the discs in a computer DVD-ROM drive, you can verify that they are CSS encrypted, something bootleg DVDs never are
    So for sets like this, you have:
    - authentic burned purple-back DVDs from Amazon or Allied Vaughn
    - authentic pressed dual-layer silver-back DVDs from Amazon when it produced these special batches
    - bootleg pressed single-layer silver-back DVDs from who knows where
    I wouldn't be surprised if there are bootleg burned purple-back DVDs too, but I think these low-quality silver-back ones are more common.
    Unfortunately Amazon doesn't seem to press these special batches anymore - I think Bob's Burgers season 5 was the most recent such release of any series that I found. I tried season 6 of Bob's Burgers and later seasons of a few other shows, and I never received anything besides burned sets.
    It amazes me that Fox (or now Disney I guess) won't release wide/retail DVD sets for a show as popular as Bob's Burgers, given that the bootleg eBay sales show just how much demand there is. They could easily press batches of 500 (or likely much more) and sell them directly from FoxConnect/DisneyMovieClub or through Amazon and other online retailers. I guess they just don't care anymore. Hopefully they'll eventually be open to licensing their titles out to someone who does care (Shout Factory, Kino, whoever).

    • @KeybladeMasterAndy
      @KeybladeMasterAndy Год назад

      Shout Factory gave Gravity Falls a DVD and Blu-ray release. I don't know how much value that show has in relation to Bob's Burgers, but there is already precedent for a licensing deal with Disney.

    I do have a legitimate question in reference to differences between English spoken in various countries;
    At 0:33, is it common in the UK to say "through to" when referencing a number of items between two numbers like you did instead of just saying "1 through 5" or "1 to 5"?
    That's the first time I've heard anyone say that in relation to an item with multiple numberings.
    Like "Harry Potter movies 2 through 6" or "Fast and Furious 1 to 4" or "From the year 1999 to 2006"
    I really do like learning how people from Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, NZ, SA etc speak

    • @dvdreviewsstudios
      @dvdreviewsstudios  Месяц назад

      Good question! Defo not been asked this before hahaha. I think my saying was just more colloquial, but correct English would be "1 to 5" in your example. :D

I did invest in a better GPU but you can just use a laptop ( and add a USB sound card like Creative Omni if needed ). It cost me less than $500 in GPU & Sound Card upgrades plus 2 x 4TB HDDs. I then sell or give away the DVDs but I make sure I have back ups of all my media on secondary HDDs. I can put almost 1000 DVDs onto an 8TB HDD and save so much shelf space.
