I think the point was that musicals should prioritise casting based on singing ability rather than recognition. I don't think it was anything against Depp, just that he should be cast because he can sing, not because he's famous.

We watched that movie in school and afterwards for OVER TWO YEARS it became a thing that during break time and sometimes when nothing was happening during lessons someone would loudly shout "SING!" and then a random assemble of other people would scream in the highest pitch they could reach. Ah, good times.
Even 13 year olds who didn't even understand the english language could figure out it wasn't good.

so, a few years ago, I saw Phantom live on Broadway, and was blown away by the actor playing the Phantom (I think he was the first black person to play the part?); he had a deep, booming voice that commanded your attention, which extended to his singing! So, first thing I did when I got home was look up the official album for the play, and guess what I heard?
some whiny little pissant that, while a good singer, doesn't portray his character at all.

Who knew Gerard Butler, who sucked so bad at the Phantom, sang the beautiful love song with Cate Blanchett in HTTYD2? Probably because playing a Viking chief suits his singing voice a little better...

I'm a die-hard ALW Phantom phanatic and I pretty much hated the film. the phantom was barely disfigured, Raoul was a joke, Christine was like 16. The re-design was too bright, the stage show was so dark I know that's parts of the theatre look but they totally missed it. I did like the fight in the snow but that was about it. Gerard Butler might work better as a rock singer, but his voice is clearly not suited for the Phantom. he was just too handsome for the phantom.

      totally agreed!
during the fightscene in the snow, i was inwardly raging, like : just kick the greasy haired dude to the curb and take the dark and handsome, with the slight sunburn!
this movie missed the mark so far, it wasnt funny any more.
allthough i have to admit, the sets were amazing and minnie driver was great. but that doesnt save the rest.
my favourite phantom movies are a mini series with charles dance as the phantom, and ( ducks behind a fireproof wall ) the argento-version, not the gore stuff, but asia argento was cool and i love julian sands, whos talent is sadly under used in movies.
just my own humble opinion of course ^^

YES!!!! Best line in the whole review. Daroga needs more love. He's one of the best parts of the book.
This was a fantastic--or should I say phantastic--review. Beth's voice is gorgeous, and I'm so glad you included someone with such knowledge of the book. Like she said, "Phantom" isn't the greatest novel in the world, but it's still a compelling, dark, and (no pun intended) haunting story. For me, I see it less as the sappy love triangle it often gets adapted as and more of a cautionary tale about what happens when an innocent child grows up believing he has no choice but to become the monster he's first assumed to be. In that sense, it reminds me a lot of stories like "Frankenstein" or "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". And as for the musical, while it's not the deepest adaptation, I still love it. The music is great and the combination of the story's melodrama with '80s cheese is just glorious. But "Love Never Dies" can get squashed by a chandelier for all I care.

Oh, about the horse, aaaaand basically EVERYTHING in the scene during the song "Phantom of the Opera"... Christine was drugged. Yeah. I know. That sounds crazy. BUT, it makes sense. First of all, at the very beginning, before the song even starts, there's a strange "fog" that fills the room. It's not just for atmosphere. It's a hallucinogenic gas that the phantom releases before he essentially kidnaps Christine and everything we see in that scene is what Christine sees in her drugged state. The horse, the sconces made of moving, gold, human hands, even the LIT candles that appear out of WATER which also appear in the Broadway play. It would also explain why all throughout that scene, Christine looks, you know, HIGH AS BALLS. Because she is. It ALSO explains why she passes the fuck out after a little while. The shock of seeing an incredibly life-like mannequin of yourself in a wedding dress combined with the effect of a roofie can do that to you, I guess. If you look closely, her makeup also changes. She goes from having a natural-looking eye to an incredibly dark, smokey eye. Sure, this might be to give her a more seductive look for artistic purposes, but it could also symbolize that her vision is clouded... by drugs.

Christine was not 15. That detail came from a mistranslation of a line from the original book. She is closer to 20. Also, I am not sure I buy the drugging thing.

Beth really does have a great voice. When I heard her start singing, I was pleasantly surprised at the voice that came out of her. But Doug's parts, hahaha were what I imagine Gerard Butler's singing would have eventually turned into and it sounds like something he would say. It's funny because it's true, hahaha and I can't stop laughing at this. One of the best reviews/skits channel awesome has done.
