PS5 Liquid Metal - What The Heck Is It & How To Replace It - The PS5 uses a cooling solution known as liquid metal. In this video I'll be explaining what liquid metal is, why the PS5 uses it (instead of thermal paste), and what the main difference is between liquid metal and thermal paste. I'll also be showing you how to replace the liquid metal in a PS5.

I know that in Brazil they by law must provide all the parts to replace in case of damaged. Check that information if correct should help u
Do you sell ps5
I just learned how to add the perfect amount of thermal paste. Now I need to learn the perfect amount of liquid metal
Dang it! Keep on learning I guess :)
I think it's too much! it's leaking like this, and it goes right under the safety tape. lay a thin layer on the surface of the APU and radiator, then draw the excess into the syringe! Never leave unnecessary drops!
@@thshit Way too much imo, not that it'll result in a bad heat dissipation, just not worth it regarding the price of a small quantity of kryonaut.
Liquid metal is like culture, the less you have, the more you spread it.
@@thshit Its the perfect amount you silly pay attention.
7:08 you lost a tiny little piece directly on the conductor track (buses)
how did u even see that
IT'S ON THE TRACE! AHHHHH!
Yep I saw it too I hope he got it
Yess It gave me anxiety ffs
I saw it drop when I was watching this on my smart tv so I came here to mention this as well, lets hope he got it off, or sees this and checks it before it does something bad.
Her: "I bet he's thinking about other women"
Me: "I wonder if I could ever apply the perfect amount of liquid metal"
hahahahaha!
Thank you and your teams efforts to produce high quality, informative, and entertaining content. Awesome
There's something about console repair I can watch it all day and you do a awesome work/explaining on how to do it .
The (likely nickel) coating on the copper heatsink is just that, a coating. It protects the heatsink from degradation from the gallium in the TIM, and so when spreading it back to the centre, it's probably not recommended to use a metal pick or screwdriver unless you've very careful. A graze is enough to allow permeability into the copper. Better to use a plastic or Teflon tool, in my opinion.
TronicsFix was clearly very gentle using the dull curve of the pick and dragged at the surface tension of the fluid when he did it, he's not an idiot, but hearing "screwdriver" made me wince a bit. Especially when this channel shows us the kind of chimps that try to fix these things sometimes.
This man was so much happy with the perfect amount of thermal paste now its unimaginable how much he will be happy with perfect amount of liquid metal 😊
Awesome Steve, people are definitely going to need this video
Hope so!
Definitely, havn't done a ps5 myself yet but If i ever do in the future i now will know what and what not to to do.!
I haven't messed with liquid metal yet, but I got to apply the perfect amount of thermal paste today, thanks to you! You would have been proud. haha
Another quality video.Always gets my vote.
Steve, you are an inspiration. I learned all my console cleaning skills from you.
You're one of those few non narcissistic people man. Keep it up.
Glad to help
Same ive became way more confident taking apart stuff
Very nice breakdown. I thought you added too much liquid metal, but when you opened it up again it seemed perfect haha.
I wonder what type of adhesive it is holding the foam border down. Looks rubbery. I don't think I'd be comfortable replacing it without new adhesive personally.
Nice work!
Very Intresting in deed! Thanks - Jass
It would be really interesting to see you tackle things like installing HDMI mods or Terraonion MODE mods into old consoles like the Dreamcast, Saturn and OG Playstation on the channel.
I would love that!
Just found your channel and really love these videos. I can't afford a console, so I kind of live vicariously through you lol.
Another very informative video.
Awesome Video Steve havn't worked on a ps5 myself yet but at least now when I do I will know exactly what to do and what not to do very informal!
10:00 Thats the result of LM reacting with the silicon, you can remove that layer by doing die lapping but it won't make any difference in thermals.
love the content! is there any interest in older consoles? I really enjoy the repair challenges!
I'll probably do some older consoles at some point.
Wow ! The disassemble of the ps5 is really cool compared to the ps4 pro...I'll never forget this power supply connector... great video !
The perfect amount of TronicsFix
That's the t-1000's great-great grandfather that you are handling there, please be careful : )
My primary concern with LM is longevity. I've never used it personally but what I understand it needs to be reapplied every 1-2 years because it dries out quicker than a good thermal paste does. So I do wonder if in 2-3 years time we won't have a bunch of overheating PS5's to worry about.
It should last much longer than that but time will tell.
Great video 👍👍 Just subbed!!!!
Smiling when he says "the perfect amount of Liquid metal" 😂 He knows what the lads want
Lol
@@Tronicsfix hi i have question u said if i removed the peace i cant put it back
Fascinating tech, wonder when it will be mainstream...cheers.
Is there any chance of the liquid metal causing issues during operation if you keep the system vertical? Seems like horizontal would be the ideal way to use the ps5 based on the viscosity of the liquid metal? Maybe I’m being paranoid.
There’s a great ps5 silicone thermal pad video on YT but it’s in German. Would be awesome if you did a video on replacing the stock thermal puddy with proper thickness silicone pads
Thank You 🔥🔥💖
You're welcome 😊
10:40
The residue looks like ghostly E.T. 😂😂 Great video!!
My concern with the liquid metal is its longevity. Specifically the longevity of the materials required to make it not ruin the rest of the system, since as that foam pad and its adhesive ages I don't know if it's going to slowly let the liquid metal leak.
Does the thermal grizzly compound preform better than the stock liquid metal? If so, is it worth replacing the stock with that compound?
Me during the week: ughhhh... why won’t it end!?
Me at 10 AM on Friday: Finally, the end of the week is here.
I don’t even have a ps5...
@TronicsFix, were you using isopropyl alcohol on your q-tip when removing and cleaning off the liquid metal?
I haven't owned a console since the Gamecube, since all of my games come through Steam, but this was fun to watch :3
Totally learned a lot in this video. Are you going to fix more broken PS5s after this?
Of course! I've got a PS5 digital here just waiting to be fixed!
@@Tronicsfix cool can't wait
Good Video 😀👍
Thank you 👍
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
Man I hate using this stuff. Great vid as always!
Ya, not my favorite either.
cool video very interesting to watch
Can you replace the aluminium heat sync on a ps4 slim to a copper/nickel one and add liquid metal
Thank you steve
Awesome tutorial Steve! Would it be beneficial to swap the thermal paste of an Xbox 360 with liquid metal?
Hey there,
I have a question, hopefully I can get a answer from you, I'm planning on taking my ps4 pro apart to clean the heat sink can I leave the old on, or do I need to replace it with new thermal paste?
Very good video
You said you was using liquid metal you had from abother ps5 did you not use the grizzly kind you showed in the video. Do you think we will need to change the liquid metal similar to how we treated thermal paste . ? Maybe a longer window or time befoe it goes bad. How would one even know if the liquid metal was bad and or needed changed... so many questions still about my new console .... thats why i been subbed i want to learn to....
Do I need to change the liquid metal over the time? In the same way as with thermal paste
The material safety data sheet says that Thermal Grizley Konductonaut is an alloy of Gallium, Indium, and Tin. No report on the % of each since that's not required for an MSDS. But that's the metals that are in it.
Thank you
I'd like to see you build a kick ass pc with all the mods etc
I managed to replace a iPhone 5s screen a few days ago it was really cool seeing inside an iPhone
would it be recommended to use the adhesive used to seal smartphones to seal the plastic part and avoid leakages?
Just out of curiousity, can you, by any, chance test Kryonaut vs Liquid Metal, and show the thermal/temperatur differences on PS5 Models?
I swear that while he was working on that, I could hear a voice saying, "Call to John." 😂
What’s the minimum taking apart to clean the heatsinks? Is warranty void after removing fan cable stickers in the United States?
Not even the Master of Thermal paste but now you are the Master of Liquid Metal. Itwas very interesting.
@ TronicsFix Do you think the ps5 would cool any better being flat or using the stand?
I have a dumb question? Can you use liquid metal on a PS4 instead of thermal paste? And which is better? Only asking cause I don't know. Love your channel. Keep up the great work
Where do you get genuine playstation 4 analog sticks? Or what do you use when your doing all these solder vids?
Does liquid metal perish with time and heat like thermal paste does, and needs changing - or being just a metal will last the console lifetime?
I wonder what happens when the foam barrier inevitable disintegrates (unless this foam is special in some way?) What will stop the LM from flowing onto sensitive components?
I'm sure they made sure of it time will tell. Even then that spongey material acts like a second barrier. It's likely extra protection in case it escapes.
Question, do we even need to remove the adhesive? to clean it and apply? I don’t know where I can even get a new one of those
Before watching, I already know it will be the perfect amount.
Lol!
Pfft. It was clearly way too much! 😡
Pfft. It was clearly far too little! 😡
@@andrewgwilliam4831 🤣
Hey Steve, could you make a video about PS5 NAND flash replacement?
I'm wondering if it's repairable when the SSD wears out.
Probably won't be making that video.
Probably not, since it's thousands of tiny solder balls... let alone matching the NAND to the controller and such...
If the NAND wears out, you're probably better off buying a new PS5...
Can liquid metal embrittlement cause any damage over time to components on the PS5 board??? Also, does liquid metal last as long as normal thermal paste?? I've read that liquid metal should be changed out every 2 years or so and that a good even application is most important to get good thermals.
Please make more long videos as there is A lot of enjoyment
Would love to. Unfortunately, those sometimes take weeks to make so I can only do them once in a while.
@@Tronicsfix it's ok we still have enjoyed all of your videos and will continue to👍
the liquid metal will be much harder to take off and re-apply later in the future :(
But WHY would I need to replace it? Is it going to evaporate out over time..?
Video request: Can show if there is a motherboard difference between the ps5 controller models?
CNCID/ICID/ICID extra info
@9:25 Can those components be covered with nail polish (I think that's what some techs use) to keep the liquid metal from damaging them if (God forbid) they ever got any on them? Or what's that other liquid you use to cover traces and UV cure them, maybe that could work too?
Yes, but I usually use conformal coating.
Conformal coating on non-potted IP68 rated boards is a pain to work on replacing components... how do you get it off ?
would reapplying liquid metal fix overheating issues on a ps5 ?
can you apply liquid metal to cpu cooler or gpu cooler and is liquid metal better compare to water cooling?
Would have epxected a better gasket for the seal, but if it works it works
does liquid metal prone to leak? if you put your PS5 on vertical stand
Your hair seems to grow super fast 😲
Lol
Lol
Lol
Lol
Lol
And the perfect amount of (as Steve says) “liquid metal”. Love your vids man keep it up
Thanks!
Wouldn't mind seeing a digital ps5 and looking at the difference and seeing if you can attach a disk drive to it
Steve, the FTC disclaimer text in your description refers to "readers". I think that should be "viewers"?
I'm not a fan of liquid metal as a tim, back in the day when I was chasing the 3ghz single core overclock I tried it out and it was bloody fiddly and too much would squirt out and too little and that was another chip fried. I am a fan of peltier's and a decent waterblock which uses electricity to create a super cold side to the cpu and using its thermal pump action channels heat to be dumped by your waterblock, in fact they were so efficient you had to protect the components from condensation and frosting, the hotter the cpu, the more condensation and cooling.
I love liquid metal. My favorite channel on SiriusXM
didn't sony say they engineered their own liquid metal? is the one you applied gonna work as well as theirs?
I ran into problems using Conductonaut, it just turnes into dust after a couple of months. The cooler was made out of copper, so that isn't the problem.
Gotta say about your sponsor, I love my Ridge Wallet. I won't go back to the traditional back pocket wallets.
I love mine too!
Steve make some ReBallling videos, people are gonna need to Replace those SSD Nands, in a year or two. Dunno why just sony went ahead at decided to solder them on the Mobo, Reballing isn't easy.
i love this channel
I just need to learn how to clean my ps5, is alredy getting dirty, also what is the perfect tool to clean my ps5 cause I don't want to use air cans I want something that's sucks in the dust
Do a similar video when u made a hole on the ps4. Lets see if the ps5 runs cooler with a hole on sides or without the panels
Good idea
The Terminator: Not like me, T-1000, advanced prototype. Made of mimetic polyalloy
John Connor: What the hell does that mean?
The Terminator: Liquid metal.
One question Steve, is it unsafe to use IPA to clean the liquid metal?
It's safe to use to clean LM
Absolutely rolling at the sponsor segment, never knew you could grow your hair instantly!
can you make a video transferring ps5 liquid metal on to a xbox series x reusing the barrier
How much time do you have to wait to apply new liquid metal I heard it lasts longer than thermal paste
Yes, it should last a VERY long time.
@@Tronicsfix ok thanks have a good day
Steve the Grandmaster of The Perfect amount of Thermalpaste. Now also got advanced to The Master of the perfect amount of Liquid Metal.
Would liquid metal dry? Would this be an issue in the future?
That looks like a lot of liquid metal :).
Also even if someone screws all the isolation material is not the end of the world as I'm sure there are many products to put all around that will protect it, no idea which products since I see a lot of ppl just using nail polishing :)
Ps: I'm not sure but I think you forgot to say it's also corrosive to some components on the motherboard just like aluminium parts.
11:48 The perfect amount of liquid metal thermal paste.
Please where can I get a PS4 fat board mine fan is way too high and keeps disconnecting pad when playing games please have you had any issues like this
Hello sir I am getting buzzing noise in my ps5 , but the thing is my I remove my game disc the buzzing noise will stop can you please tell me how to fix that 😔
Nice
