HOW TO PLAY MODERN METAL #3 - Melodic Guitar Riffs (With Tabs!)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 4 окт 2020
- Hey guys!
Here's how I go about writing melodic modern metal riffs on guitar. The players and bands that I look up to the most that play in this sort of style are Misha Mansoor, Jake Bowen and Mark Holcomb of Periphery, Tiny Moving Parts, Counterparts, John Browne and Olly Steele of Monuments.

Dude, appreciate these lessons so much. I was trapped in power chord and pentatonic purgatory for years until you started making these videos.
dude i fu@ing hate pentatonic and power chords thats like so 70s 80s whatever and the worst thing is when u watch a guitar related videos and a dude plays the mfking pentatonic . like i wanna buy a guitar watch like thousand videos about it and every mfka plays pentatonic
@@Dobro-gq8iq Because it's a commonly used scale. You can still play pentatonics and still be melodic. Of course you have to use them differently
The starting riff sounds like an anime op hands down
Ok, now I'm inspired to write something like that and I am sure that I will give up after first 15 minutes :/
Same here, man.
Guys, just learn your scales and triads. All these riffs are just numerous permutations and combinations of scales and triads. This style of playing is also done in jazz, known as chord melodies.
THEORY BAD. ME ONLY WANT DUN DUN DUN CHUG CHUG CHUG OOGA BOOGA RIFFS
This most asked question is finally answered. Let me know what you guys think!
Great content!
Where's the link to the other video you mention 5:05?
@Austin Hayman cheers
@Austin Hayman doesn't show on RUclips mobile for some reason
"sounds a little something like this"
*plays impossible riff*
Me: throws guitar in garbage
Lol
These riffs aren't nothing compared to technical death metal lol
@@braxtonfps3580 one band... Archspire. Brutal murder to both hands

Your channel is totally the best iv'e seen in a long time, love your style and way with music!
Absolutely love your work mate. It's so good. I get alot of inspiration from you. Keep it coming 👍🏻👍🏻
This riff was so so wonderful. So catching, so acrobatic, so much fun :) great lesson as always man
ur a talented boy Keyan. Looking forward to hearing more stuff like this.
Your channel is invaluable. So much good information. Also you are an excellent player and I really dig your riffs and compositions. Respect bro.
Thanks bro your chords video and this have helped me a ton. I have been playing guitar for about 17 years but these videos really made something click in my head. I have been trapped in powerchord and pentatonic purgatory, and always have been thinking of scale boxes when i recently started to try and play more lead. i only started really getting into drop tunings last year and always thought there was some stigma to it and was so uptight about making sure every note i play is part of whatever scale. but damn, the best guitar players i have met aren't snobs about theory, and just play what sounds good and in key. after those two videos i can honestly say may melody and chord game have improved and am having a blast making chords/melodies in drop a on my new 7 string.
This was a brilliant lesson! Can't wait to get started with modern metal riffs!
been waiting for a video like this for a while! Thanks!
I watched your chord video and thought “man I really
Hope he does a tutorial for riffs” and here it was. This is awesome. Well constructed and extremely helpful! And such a cool riff!
Man, I been looking for a video like this for a while, very helpful thanks.
Nice work Keyan, always enjoy your videos
Hey Keyan! thanks for making this video! Rock on bro!
Your riffs are such impressive man!
Keep going on!
Greetings from austria :)
Keyan, very nice content.
Thank you so much for your video!
Getting IBTS/Novelist vibes........absolutely love it! This is such a quality video. Seeing step by step how it all links together an how you constructed the riffs is great viewing.

So inspiring content! I was thinking about building a small home-studio.. but now i definitely am. I really want to get such a killer guitar sound. Keep it on, Keyan.! :)🔥🔥
this was really cool. and the riffs are very awesome. Very Hail The Sun sounding. Much dig. Cheers big bro. the chord flick technique really reminds me of that pop punk tone from Knuckle Puck.
Awesome lesson man

Realizing The Fall of Troy created this "modern metal" 15 years ago lol.
Thought the same lol
The Fall of Troy are too underated as a band.

Which songs by them?
Completely different type of music
Big fan man. I'm a fellow guitarist and find your videos just amazing. Ever thought about a video going through writing guitar harmonies

Sounds pretty awesome!! Make Vildhjarta type riff. I learn so many things from you. 💯
great video man
amazing!
Id say Ive almost got the hand of writing this sorta stuff started track something similar the other day.
but then I see your breakdown you throw in chords with the semi-barre with the 2nd figure instead of 1st and Im just like.
Ahhh darrrn thats next on my list.
Sick riff, reminds me of some old school counterparts.
You are incredible
THE BASS!!! 😍😱
Thank you very much for your vedios 🤟🤟🇱🇰

MY IDOL
automatically, i subbed :)
Damn you, Plini Lite...!! You rock too....!!!
So a little side note: From the looks of it, when he says the 0-2-4 chords, he is basically saying the chords that have root notes that are all two semitones apart and right by each other. so in a minor scale, it goes whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, half. The three notes fall on after the first half step, after the second whole step, and after the third whole step. I know that may be kinda confusing so basically pick your root note (the starting note of your key) and go up three frets, that is your first root note. From that note, go up two frets, and that is the second root. Last but not least, go up two more frets and that is your third root note. If you are in a drop tuning, you can just play the standard power chord on those frets and those will be your chords. (Side note: each fret on your guitar is a half-step).
Nope. Not a clue. Thanks for trying anyway.
Awesome lesson Keyan!
Amazing series!!! Which band you recommend to covering and learn apart from Napoleon?
love this series man 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Thanks for watching!
Just like making a story when constructing a riff
Intro riff kinda reminds me of Counterparts in their YNYA era
My boy got that LED strip lighting going
aye
keyan idoll
I love your tone so much. I'm actually stuck between using GGD Zilla or ML Sound Labs' MIKKO plugin with Archetype: Plini. Which do you find to be better?
The 0-2-4 system is going to be a game-changer for me.
That's freaking genius, Keyan. Another awesome content! More power to your channel!
Bro I started using it and it HAS been a game changer. Really gives you that Polaris-esque sound.
@@itzGZUSbetch man that's fucking awesome. I gotta try this tomorrow! More power to you dude!
this is sick. do you have more stuff like this on your patreon?
🤘
Do a review on that Jackson Pro please
Amazing style! Did you have a teacher at some point of your guitar learning?
You're the champ.
Wow! stunning!
Can I have the backing track?
Your the best 😎👌
MAKE MORE OF THIS PLSSS.....
Yee boi
Dude, you're an inspiration!
What fantastic intro have you created that you can listen to somewhere?
Dark Sounding Chords for next video....cheers from Indonesia
I second this
I have finally come to the conclusion that I need a 7 string and get it setup in Drop A. I have realized the bands I like use 7 strings and Drop A seems to be the tuning they use most of the time.
Keyan did you start out learning in E standard with pentatonic and major/minor scale using 3nps in 7 position (modes)?
THat riffffff!!!!!
Are you using Archetype: Plini? could you share the preset you're using in this video?
Dude can you make a course? I'd buy it lol
i feel like this should be a new veil of maya riff
at 4:46 he says doo doo
Try this in standard B tune
13:21 what if the broken down riff was rythem?
👋👋👋♥️♥️♥️
About tuning drop?
im a drummer trying to learn guitar. my biggest issue is teaching my middle to pinky fingers to press notes but it just wants to roll up like im holding a stick lol
i think that riff is similar lto
J rock riffs
Nice HT6 pro series! How are you liking it?
It’s awesome!
Full song please
Does anyone have the tabs for this video? Its not available on Patreon anymore...
Hey Keyan, thanks so much for all the work you put in to your page. My question is are you practicing this riff to a metronome? if not, how do you go about playing it time and recording etc. thanks man!
When I record it’s always metronome and drum part in the background. I think my internal BPM clock has just gotten better over time. That part in the video where I play the whole riff just on guitar the the rolling tab, I coped and pasted that rolling tab from the actual song section and it just fit almost perfectly. Practice makes perfect
Keyan Houshmand Live thanks, Keyan. I have been practicing all my riffs in my daw with a click. Been having some trouble finding the right time signature/bpm on some of the more prog riffs. Any advice on that? Thanks again for the reply.
@@bryanbernstein83 try to play just the chords and focus on the down beats until you have a good feel for the outline of the whole riff/progression, and then start dropping in the lead lines and all that but keeping your focus on the down beats and chord changes. bring the tempo up slowly and things should start falling into place.
which guitar is this? doesn't look like the ht6 that you normally use!
It's new! It's a Pro Series Juggernaut upgraded with Bareknuckle Ragnarok Pickups, Hipshot bridge and Gotoh locking tuners
@@KeyanHoushmandLive glad it made it to you safely mate! Still sounds great 😍
What scale that you use ? Sorry for asking this, cuz i just start to learning guitar 🙏
@Ryan Trump2020 may i join the league ? Where should i go to make a requester ? Please tell me 🙏
What chord was that at 04:43?
I don't know if it's my tone (or my brain) but whenever I play a chord followed by single notes I hate the way it sounds.
Though I've been learning Scarlet and that has helped me with learning the notes I usually know in Drop C.
fusion of both my dude tone and the hands. you'd be surprised how much technique contributes to your sound
Just keep at it. I try to come up with a original sounding riff with each song I do. It’s a lot of fun.
Which camera do u use again ?
Sony A6400
@@KeyanHoushmandLive thanks 😏
Keyan houshmond I feel bad watching your videos cause your awesome and i end up being a such a hater cause I wish I could construct riffs like that
