  • A tourist was surrounded and hit with a stick after climbing the protected Mayan monument known as El Castillo, or the Pyramid of Kukulcan, at the archeological site of Chichen Itza in Yucatan, Mexico, in footage posted on January 29.

    I've climbed Chitzen Itza several times, but it's very steep and smooth, making it especially hard to come back down. There was a chain to hold while backing down. A woman fell to her death in about 2006, so they've since closed it for climbing.

    Considering those stairs were designed for folks to be kicked down them the temptation would indeed be tempting

      You obviously did not read the comments above. It’s strictly prohibited to climb up any archeological sites in México as of 2008. There are no exceptions nor special treatment for anyone. Period. There is also the question about respecting the temples of our ancestors, which aggravates many of the locals if you disrespect the rule in place.
