Sad but true when I was in elementary school they used to teach us this stuff. Of course I was a tomboy so it went in one ear and out the other. Only real proper etiquette that I took away from any of that was how to properly sit in a dress and that’s because my mother taught me that. Then again the only time we would wear a dress was on Sundays to church.

I have seen first hand how society creates an expected being in the form of a woman, expected to live on some set way and never for themselves. Lives designed to always put themselves second to everyone and everything else. Born and raised by powerful women I was, there is more power in these magnificent beings than what meets the eye. For everyone in the comments "A god for the daughters" Isnt to be taken literal. If you listen to the words, Watch your mouth watch your weight, pose like a trophy on a shelf. Its about the standards most of society has for women, its about what a lot of women grew up with, how women have been treated and expected to act. Not literally about god. It's a beautiful, powerful song with a powerful meaning.

Yes, it absolutely is about God but more importantly, to those of us who see the bigger picture, it is about the worldwide denial of the Goddess. When we refuse to honor the Divine Feminine, when we refuse to admit that there even is a Goddess as well as a God, then we, as a culture, see no need to honor women, who are seen as inferior to men. After all, God is a man, right? Wrong. And until we are ready to acknowledge the divinity of the feminine, we will always see women in a lesser light.

The reasons for those old sayings, "life lessons", including the "books on head", were to LIFT YOU UP, not mash you down...
Those old sayings are the behavioral equivalent of going to school to learn how to read and write.
Smile - to meet people AND MAKE FRIENDS AND SUCCEED IN LIFE. Same thing for "minding your manners".
Stand up straight, shoulders back, good posture... Helps to prevent back problems, presents an image of confidence, very useful when interviewing for jobs, for one example... and it's also very good for YOUR sense of self-esteem... and all three of those reasons apply to "watching your weight"... health, both mental and physical, and employment.
I think you'd do well to at least *consider* these things, and then maybe teach them to your daughter, for HER benefit... and above all... EXPLAIN the reasons to her so that SHE doesn't misunderstand or completely miss the point.

You are not better than ANYONE, and you are most certainly not better than anyone else just because some book written by man says so. What a disgusting way to view women. Funny, my boyfriend has always seen me as equal to him, and he comes from a very religious Catholic/Methodist family. His parents see me as his equal as well. In fact, I even got my Masters degree this year and he celebrated my accomplishment! My having one more degree than him didn’t make him feel insecure in the slightest, because we are equals, and he supports me as I do for him. Your way of thinking about women is dying out, get used to it.

Religion has caused more misery to all of mankind in every stage of human history than any other single idea. We are all programmed from the moment we are born. We are born with a name, a religion, a nationality, a race, a gender...... then we have to spend our whole life defending an identity we had nothing to do with! Wake up! Religion was invented by man for control. You think killing in the name of God is just? Because that is what people have been doing for centuries. It's ridiculous! When men will take the time to understand the message of this song, to try to put themselves in a woman's shoes, to treat women exactly how they themselves would want to be treated, and put away the sexism in their hearts (whatever it looks like and whatever form it takes), then they might be able to truly appreciate its message. And yes, as a man, I want to hear this type of music everywhere more often. This song sounds like the preaching I had to hear from my older sister. Stand up straight, balance this book on your head. The memories. My mother was worse then my sister. Like I was being molded for someone else's dream.

Raisa Bruners says: " A tender, unfliching reflection on the superficial standards women are held to, it will speak to many women who have put their own dreams second to the requirements of society, family or both. There's a certain resignation in lead singer Karen Fairchild's lilting voice, but it's also a delicate reminder that we are not alone in our struggle. "

So glad I raised my daughter just like my sons. All equal but all different. My baby girl is 15 right now and shes all girl at times, but shes my hunting buddy and field dresses her own game. She operates our farm machinery as good as anyone, and shes never been to good to roll her sleeves up and get greasy and dirty wrenching when we're brokedown. Make no mistake though on daddy daughter dances she looks like a princess and scares me to death that my baby girl is growing up way too fast.

@@Scripture-Man Dude... That is not what the song is saying. It is saying the complete opposite. " I'm just looking for a god for the daughters" means that how could the one and only god let women be treated like dirt? This song is saying that men need to stop thinking women were created just for them. And women need to stand up for what they want.

I can relate so much. I grew up in a Male dominated home, what my dad said goes, I remember wanting to go to work with my dad (he's a retired engineer) but he'd always take my my older sister and younger brother because "you're a young girl who needs to play with dolls" I'll be 31 this year and all I have is a 2yr degree in early childhood education and I feel like I wasted my life in college. I feel like I never amounted to anything. I wish I had the opportunity my female younger cousins have now. Who knows where I would've ended up.

You’re still very young! School will always be there for you to go back to if you want! Never feel like you waisted time, I think that of myself a lot and it’s not a fun feeling because I start bringing myself down. And you do have the options that your younger cousins do, it just takes a little research to find out the information!

    • @falleneldor

      Sandra N,
I think the older one becomes, one realize they don't "waist time" we just learn to be more efficient and focused on what it is we DO want after having done stuff we had THOUGHT we wanted. (I "waisted" ten+ years trying to be animator/commercial artist and fantasy fiction writer before I realized my art is just for me, my stories mostly entertain my friends and family. Though I may swich focus to making children's books as those have a lot of bad messages in them nowadays...) I have only learned this in the last five years and I'm only 37... plenty of life left to live.
The persuit of happiness is so tied up in what we think we are suppose to be and do...that's as true for men in different ways then it is for women. Case in point, i am shit as far as "providing" when it comes to holding a 9-5 job. But as a man, we are expected to be "providers" in this way. (Thank goodness I like smart woman, as my future wife will have to make more money then I can so we can raise our unborn kids in the house I hope to learn how to build over the next five years!)
Hang in there. Life gets better when we are open to the possibilities we haven't seen yet!
