  • Lots to discuss following the match between the Boks and Wales at Twickenham. The first game for the World Champions since lifting that crown and the first game for Warren Gatland's men since getting white-washed in the Six Nations.

As a Wales fan, I watched the first twenty minutes with increasing dread, but overall I was happy with how the team went. We had a few extended stretches of time when we were the better team which I didn’t really expect. We got shown up in areas where we knew we have problems and, sadly, they’re SA's strengths.
But we’re improving there and playing the best in the world, even if they weren’t at their best today. There are still a lot of positives to take from it.

As a neutral I found the TMO interventions were irritating. Especially when a blatant forward pass led to a South African try and nothing was said - I know we can’t expect the officials to be perfect but that kind of miss is, in my opinion, becoming more common. As is the constant need to stop the game every time there is a bump on the head! - at least the ref was consistent in that regard. A plea from me would be an automatic HIA to the ‘victim’ when a player is carded for head contact - it might stop some of the play acting creeping in. Looking back that looks like a lot of negative, but overall, like you I think there was much in the game for both sides.

    • @ruanjordaan2563
      @ruanjordaan2563 15 дней назад +3

@@guypenrose5477 The new rules on forward pass has changed and they did go check it as you could hear the ref asking the TMO, do take that into account. Well its not new but people tend to forget that they brought in moment into the rule and that's exactly what transpired with that pass. If the hands of the person who passes goes backwards, its momentum that takes the ball forward and not the passer.
Honestly not a fan of the rule. Forward means forward the passer is suppose to take that into account which makes it more professional in my opinion.
So many stoppages in this game almost went to sleep.

Sacha was brilliant. How Dobson doesn't play him at flyhalf for the Stormers is mind-blowing. How Manie kicks and not Sacha for the Stormers is insane. Had Sacha kicked against Glasgow the Stormers might have won that game. Sacha is Pollard on steroids. His first kick at goal at internasional level was over 50 meters and he had distance to spare. With a 100% tackling record one has to wonder why the Stormers don't play him at flyhalf. The gap from WC/Autumn intl to summer tests/Rugby Champ is too long. Any test is better than going straight in to vital test series for any team. 6 Nations till summer while shorter is still requiring at least a warm up test.
This is especially important if you still have players in Europe who are in the finals stages of their domestic teams competition as there is still today.

    • @randomlyfactual1943
      @randomlyfactual1943 15 дней назад

@@saints16o5o87 This is true, it does feel a bit long, but bit there are all sorts of other factors that might affect the feasibility of extending the test window:
      - Remember that the European teams are really close together and traveling time is equivalent to the time it takes to make a cup of tea. Your wife and kids can easily make the trip from London to Cardiff. In the SH, this means time away from families, extended stay overseas etc.
      - Players unions. Any decision you make regarding where and when which tests are played have to be taken up with them and they need to sign off on it. This means several countries with their own unions all agree. If one changes something (like the test window) other unions might fight against this.
      - NH teams tour here at June/July because if they come any later (even late winter) they will probably melt
      - SH sides have won 9 out of 10 world cups. Why change the formula if we are this dominant?
Nonetheless, I think there is a simple solution: why can't we field a team like SA "A" play a few games against some nations that struggle to get tests. Play those guys you want to debut etc and see how they do against Japan, Fiji or Samoa. Or if they want the game to be a test, call it a test.

    I have a few thoughts:
    - That double tackle from vd Merwe was downright incredible
    - Factoring in the try, definitely MoM performance from vd Merwe
    - Fassi under the high ball was hella impressive. Keeper.
    - Roos was a bit too exuberant, but some good runs from him. Definitely a worthy addition to the Bok setup
    - Hendrickse had a shocking first half but I felt he came back nicely in the second
    - I'm a huge fan of Esterhuizen but he was very quiet
    - Grant Williams is an enticing prospect but he needs to be AT those rucks and not in the mass of humanity INSIDE it.
    - Dixon, we definitely need to see more of him.
    - Kwagga is much much better off the bench than he is when he starts
    - I expected us to have a tricky first half. We didn't look to good but after Rassie presumably went off at half time, we came right
    - I think the Welsh can be proud of their charges today. They were severely outgunned but fronted up bravely.
    - I hate complaining about the ref, but can someone please explain the scrum penalties to me? I saw us scrumming them away and then getting penalised. Is this something to do with the new rules?
    - The 22 drop out for a held up ball is just dumb
    - Sacha, what can I say? Very good debut

    Thanks Tim. Agree overall.
    - whilst the captaincy in the bok team is a shared one amongst the senior cohort, it lacked energy under PSDT. I say this with deep respect for the man and his skills. I feel he is best left to roam and create advantage over managing the game.
    2. The tryouts for the most part on the Bok side showed immense promise - you say rusty I say lack of cohesion and identity. They need time.
    3. Evan Roos, not for the first time I believe, has been too self absorbed, generally lacking warrior instinct. Cameron H will soon be on his tail. Roos lacks rugby IQ in the moment.
    3. Edwill v/d Merwe is heading for stardom. Humble, open, talented and fearless.
    4. Sacha F-M has talent in spades, needs some space to explore. In 3 months he will be pressurizing Libbok for 10. If Pollard comes in strong and fit, then I think he could do very well under his wing.
As always thanks for the prompt and clear rapportage.

My wife was at the game whilst I was watching it on telly, and I sent her a message before the end of the game, which read something like, "I predict that the Springboks will win the next World Cup." She sent a message back saying, "What a surprise. " Yes, I'm a Springbok fanatic, but I believe that although there were nervous jitters in the first half, especially, there is some phenomenal talent in this team. When Rassie moulds these guys, they'll be brilliant.

The 23 was selected on merit, but they needed to manage the game time of the 'rookies' so some of them started ... De Allende will start v Ireland ... the first half debacle was a lack of teamwork, a new Tony Brown 'quick hands deep' attack, bad decision-making and this was the first game as new combinations except for the tight five .... at the half Rassie reminded them of their mortality and they were a different team when they came out the tunnel for the second half. Marx still a little rusty, PTSD was a little slow, Evan Roos is going to have to play a bit better to compete with Hanekom and Fassi is simply majestic in the air ... all in all I think Rassie has data points for his Ireland Squad. Check.
