According to the law (which was signed back in 2021 to be effective 1/1/24) "(a) Unjustified differences in similar products that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys can be more easily identified by the consumer if similar items are displayed closer to one another in one, undivided area of the retail sales floor.
      (b) Keeping similar items that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys separated makes it more difficult for the consumer to compare the products and incorrectly implies that their use by one gender is inappropriate." In other words, girls can play with 'boy's' toys, and boys can play with 'girl's' toys, don't limit the kid's choices of what they want to play with.

I think that's the point of the law. Big retailers now separate 'boys' aisles from 'girls' aisles to get the kids to choose quicker and sell more. Retailers don't want the boy wasting time looking at the 'girl' toys because they're not likely to choose them anyway. Limit the choices to make the sale. Marketing 101.

Don't have the boys or girls waste time looking at toys they're not as likely to want. Limit choices, it's Marketing 101. According to the text of AB1084 (passed in 2021 to be effective 1/1/24) "(a) Unjustified differences in similar products that are traditionally marketed either for girls or for boys can be more easily identified by the consumer if similar items are displayed closer to one another in one, undivided area of the retail sales floor.

AB 1084 (Britten's Bill) passed in 2021, with a long lead time to comply, effective 1/1/24. Big retailers (over 500 employees in CA) are already in compliance. This law was nothing more than a heads up to big CA retailers to stop sequestering the toys to all separate areas (what they marketed to boys vs what they marketed to girls). Named after Britten Sires, a 9-year-old girl who's been fighting to break down gender roles across the state. The self-proclaimed feminist said she came up with the idea for the bill when she felt awkward about entering the boy's section.
"I was like, wait, why is there a boy's section? I'm a girl, but I want to go in it," Britten said.
She noticed two main differences between the boys' and girls' departments that made her feel uncomfortable.
"Boys is more like knowledge and trying to get them smarter so they can get into a good college and get a good job, and then women's is more like makeup and cooking sets," Britten explained.
She said she now owns lots of toys and clothes from the boy's section because those were the items she liked the most.

It should be intended for any kid that wants it without being pigeon holed into 'approved' choices. I understand marketing enough to recognize the tactic of limiting choices to speed up sales, and clearly prior to 2021 CA legislators saw the sequestering of toy displays by gender. No doubt affected retailers began complying long before today, which is the effective date of the law. But again, it was passed back in 2021.
